WELCOME
Student Vice President Welcome to your college experience! Coming to South Lanarkshire College as a student is an exciting and challenging experience. We know that sometimes you might feel a bit apprehensive, shy or unsure. Don’t worry, there’s a huge amount of support available: Student Services in the Advice Centre, Learning Development staff, fellow students, our IT department, the Library and Learning Centre. Course specific information will be given to you by very supportive teaching staff. The Student Association is a major part of the College’s support system, and anyone can get involved! There are eight volunteer Student Officer positions available each year to allow you to have fair representation across the College Faculties, and be the voice of your fellow students. Be the one to make change and promote a great overall college experience.
The Student President and Vice President are both paid positions within the Student Association, and the elections process takes place in May each year. If you’re looking for any other information just pop down to the Student Association office which is signposted on the Ground Floor Atrium. I hope you choose to study here at South Lanarkshire College, and I’d highly recommend for you to get involved in your Student Association to get even more from your college experience. Throughout my time here I have grown as a person, met lots of new people and gained excellent skills which I’ll take forward in my future roles.

LEARNING DEVELOPMENT
Learning Development Studying at college makes significant demands on all students, but especially those who have not studied for some time or those who, for whatever reason, found previous study challenging. The College is committed to ensuring a quality provision of additional support to all students who require it. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT NEEDS
The lecturers in the Learning Development team are experienced in helping with a wide range of learning needs and physical, sensory or mobility difficulties. For some students a specific learning development need, for example Dyslexia, might mean there’s a need for specialised help. For other students support may involve formal assessment to assist with application, or assessment to determine who may have specific technology needs, for example the provision of specialist computer software or hardware, and for training in the use of these assistive technologies.
Alternatively, students may opt to join the Skills for Life workshops to brush up on study skills or areas of learning that have given problems in the past, for example English and/or Maths. These workshops are also open to members of the local community. ACCESSING SUPPORT
Support is free and open to anyone enrolled on a course at the College. It’s very much for you to determine how much or how little support you feel you need.
Some communication support is available such as Note-takers, Signers, Readers and Scribes.
All students receiving additional support will have an individual learning plan drawn up to reflect personal requirements and this plan will be used for monitoring and evaluation of progress.
LITERACY & NUMERACY SUPPORT
SUPPORTED PROGRAMMES
Additional support may take the form of occasional meetings to discuss progress and to help directly with aspects of study such as managing time, reading and revising effectively or planning and writing assignments.
There are supported programmes available for students with learning development needs.

APPLICATION & FUNDING
Even if you choose to study part time you can still apply for funding to help cover the cost of your course fees.
Limited funds are also available to help students experiencing temporary hardship whilst waiting for a funding application to be assessed. An advanced loan will be targeted at those deemed to be in the most need. Both FE and HE Discretionary/Childcare Funds are cash limited, therefore there’s no guarantee that these costs can be met. If you wish to apply for support from these funds you should do so as soon as you enrol at the College. Application forms for all funds are available in the College Advice Centre. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Most funding is means-tested. This means that you’ll have to submit information on your own income (independent students) or your parents’/guardians’ income (students under 25 who’ve not been self-supporting from income). You’ll be required to submit evidence of income/benefits and status (e.g. original copies of birth/passport/ marriage/divorce certificates etc.) with your funding application. Make sure that you read the checklists carefully and make sure you include everything that’s been requested. Failure to do so can delay your application and any payments. TUITION FEES
Most of our students don’t pay fees. Fees may be paid on their behalf by SAAS, SDS ILA, their employer, or waived. Students need to meet the residence eligibility criteria set out by the different funding bodies.

Whichever way you’re funded, it’s very important to apply early so that your fees are covered. If you don’t apply, you’ll be liable for the payment of the full course fee. PART TIME STUDY
Students on part time courses may apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for a part time fee grant, to Skills Development Scotland (SDS) for an Individual Learning Account (ILA) or to the College for a fee waiver to help cover the cost of part time course fees. To qualify for a SAAS part time fee grant, you must study 30 - 119 SCQF credits per year at SCQF Levels 7 - 11. For eligibility and further information go to www.saas.gov.uk To qualify for SDS ILA funding you must be studying on a SDS ILA approved course. For eligibility and further information go to www.myworldofwork.co.uk To qualify for a fee waiver you must be studying on a vocational part time programme, be unemployed and/or in receipt of certain benefits and be able to satisfy the conditions set out in the College Fee Waiver Policy. Fee waivers will be granted subject to proof of status being presented on enrolment. For further information, contact the College Finance team on 01355 807780.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING
Flexible/ Blended Learning Flexible/blended learning is ideal for students who find it difficult to attend college regularly. With flexible/blended learning, you can learn at your own pace, and choose where and when you’ll study. For most courses, you’ll require computer and Internet access. Normally, there’ll be very little need to attend college and you’ll study at home or at work, although some courses require occasional visits to college for tutorials or assessment purposes. If you don’t have computer and Internet access, you can make use of the College Learning Centre, booking a PC at times to suit you. On enrolment, you’ll receive either a learning pack to take away and study or you’ll be given the access code to an online course. You’ll be a full student of the College with access to the same range of support services as our on-campus students. For further information contact our Admissions Advisors. Warm, friendly support is on hand from the moment you begin the application process until the day you graduate and beyond.
International students can apply for many courses that the College has to offer and students studying Business, Hospitality or Construction Management may have the option of commencing their studies in either August or February. Successful completion of the HND allows students to apply to university and the College’s articulation agreements, in many cases, allow entry to third year of a Bachelor’s degree at one of our partner universities. We’re also proud to offer a Bachelor of Accounting degree at the College in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland. We’re also delighted to offer Pre-Masters and Pre-MBA courses designed specifically for international students. Successful completion of one of these courses allows students direct entry to a taught MSc or MBA programme at one of our partner Scottish or English universities. For more information about these courses look at the website www.slc.ac.uk/international or email us on international@slc.ac.uk During your time at South Lanarkshire College we’re committed to providing you with a positive and enriching experience so that when you return home, you’ll take with you not only your qualifications and graduation certificate, but also very fond memories of your time here. Warm, friendly support is on hand from the moment you begin the application process until the day you graduate and progress to university or employment, either in the UK or overseas.
On arrival students are picked up from the airport and taken to pre-booked accommodation. We show you around the local area, help you to register with a bank and a doctor and make sure you have the essentials you need, including a sim card for your phone so that you can contact home. We want you to really make the most of your time with us so lots of events are organised for students. In the past, trips to Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, Manchester and London and celebrations for events such as Chinese New Year, Eid and Diwali have been organised. There are lots of opportunities to make friends, share experiences, share your culture and learn about others. One of the highlights is the annual graduation ceremony when students celebrate their achievements in the company of their classmates, guests and college staff. Throughout your studies with us the International Office and your course tutors will be on hand to offer support and guidance. We understand that before leaving home you’ll have lots of questions about studying at SLC. We recommend that you have a look at our website for course details and how to apply. WHAT’S WITH WORK PROGRAMME
PROVISION FOR S5 & S6
The programme gives S3 and S4 pupils the opportunity to undertake study at college in place of one National 4 or 5 unit. Programmes in Activity Tourism, Beauty, Care, Construction, Hairdressing, Hospitality and Horticulture are offered through the partnership with South Lanarkshire Council.
In response to the Wood Report on the “Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce” we’ve added options for S5 and S6 students to our College programme. These include a range of SQA Higher National units, Higher National unit clusters and Higher level Group Awards in all areas of the College. There are also qualifications available from other Awarding Bodies e.g. City & Guilds and BIIAB. Often success in these subject areas can guarantee entry to full time South Lanarkshire College courses the following year, giving an alternative route to university. The College has established strong links with universities and has secured guaranteed places from some Higher level courses into second or third years of degree programmes. Programmes can be designed to allow a variety of modes of attendance depending on the individual needs of the student and the school. All courses offer the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications which provide progression pathways from National 4 through to Higher National levels of study.
WINTER LEAVERS PROGRAMME
This programme is open to pupils who wish to leave school at the winter break. To undertake the programme you must be eligible to leave in December and you must be 16 years old before the end of February next year. Pupils on the programme have the option of 3 areas of study: Business, Construction or Care. This programme is offered through the College partnership with South Lanarkshire Council. If you’re interested in these programmes, in the first instance, you should contact your Guidance Teacher.
We have a long tradition of working with schools and offer a range of programmes for and in partnership with schools and local councils.
VISITS
Visits to the College for S4-S6 pupils who are leaving school may be organised by contacting the Marketing team. The Marketing team also attends careers and parents’ evenings for S4-S6 pupils. Please contact our Marketing Department on 01355 807305 or marketing@slc.ac.uk

SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability
ENERGY & CARBON SAVINGS
South Lanarkshire College has “Promoting Sustainable Behaviours” as one of its key priorities. We encourage people to think about engaging with a more “circular economy”, reducing the resources and energy they use, re-using resources where appropriate and recycling as much as possible. The College has been involved in various initiatives in order to reduce its resource use, its energy use and also its carbon footprint. Two of the three buildings on the campus are low-energy, low-carbon buildings. The first to be constructed was the groundbreaking and award-winning low-energy house. The most recent is the College’s new teaching block. Each of these buildings has outstanding levels of insulation, triple glazing, a ground source heat pump as the sole means of heating, rainwater harvesting and photovoltaic panels that produce more electricity each year than the buildings use. In addition, the new teaching block has a revolutionary solar chimney system to assist with ventilation in the summer months. This is the first building in the UK to achieve “Outstanding” under the BREEAM (2014) environmental standards. Amazingly, both of these buildings have an “A” or “A+” energy performance certificate and are designed to produce more electricity every year than they use.
Our main building on the campus is of a more traditional design. However, even it has some very effective systems that help us reduce energy. If you look at the lights in classrooms, the lights closest to windows will often be dimmer than those furthest away. This is an automatic system controlled by a light sensor on the roof. It maintains a constant level of light throughout the rooms but saves around 20% of the electricity that would otherwise be required for lighting. In addition, when the lights are not used for a period of time, they will automatically switch off. To improve our energy performance further the College has installed a ground source heat pump, air source heat pumps and 300 solar panels. These micro-renewable energy sources reduce the amount of fossil fuel the College uses to heat and light the building. Any surplus energy is sold back into the national grid. The College takes waste management very seriously and segregates waste at the point it is generated. Please make sure you’re very careful about which bin you use for different types of waste. All of the above measures have contributed to helping the College to reduce our carbon footprint by around 24% since we moved into our current main building. This easily exceeds the target set by the Scottish Government for the public sector.
The College’s new teaching block is the first building in the UK to achieve ‘Outstanding’ under the BREEAM (2014) environmental standards.

LOW ENERGY HOUSE
One of our high profile initiatives has been the low-energy house that South Lanarkshire College, Dawn Homes and over 50 commercial partners built on the College’s campus. The low-energy house is now used as a practical and innovative education resource for training, skills development and knowledge exchange with industry. It has 18 photovoltaic panels, 2 solar hot-water panels, a ground source heat exchanger and a ground source heat pump. It’s one of the very few buildings in Scotland with an “A” rated energy performance certificate. The energy used to heat the house for a whole year is only about £80 – a fraction of the cost of most houses. Glasgow Caledonian University is actively involved in monitoring the environmental and energy performance. This includes monitoring variables such as the internal and external temperature and humidity. The College has provided hundreds of organisations with guided tours of the facility and shared the knowledge, information and lessons learned with thousands of people. The house features as a case study in the Scottish Government’s energy efficiency action plan, published in October 2010, and also features on the Scottish Government website as a case study by the Scottish Centre for Regeneration. The project has attracted a raft of awards including the UK Green Gown Award for colleges and smaller institutions. The lessons we learned from this project helped us to design the College’s new teaching block. This is the first building in the UK to achieve the highest possible environmental score ‘outstanding’ under the 2014 BREEAM Regulations.
