ROUTES FOR ALL/FOCUS WEST ENTRY ROUTE Routes for All and FOCUS West work with 37 schools in the West of Scotland to widen access to Further and Higher Education, driving higher and greater aspiration for young people and supporting an embedded knowledge of successful application to college and university. All applicants who are participating in the Routes for All or FOCUS West initiatives will be guaranteed an interview for their chosen course, as long as they meet the entry requirements. LEARNING NEED OR DISABILITY Early identification of any learning need or disability enables us to ensure that you receive any support required during the interview process and also to identify any support needs you may have during your course of study. For example: • If you have dyslexia or difficulties with writing, spelling or numeracy • Any learning difficulties or previous learning support at school • Hearing or sight impairment • Mobility problems or physical disability • Mental health problems or social/emotional difficulties • General health problems including any underlying illnesses If you require support at the interview, please complete the Interview Support Request form and return it to the College in advance of your interview. If it appears that you may have some support needs, you may be referred to the College’s Learning Development team so that your support needs can be assessed with a view to identifying (if necessary) a reasonable support package. This assessment will be carried out as soon as possible after your interview. CARERS AND CARE EXPERIENCED STUDENTS We’re committed to supporting students with caring responsibilities, have care experience, are currently in care, or are about to leave care. Our dedicated Student Services team will work closely with you to ensure you have all the support you need to facilitate a smooth transition, and help prepare you for college life. We’ll work in partnership with other support services and agencies, internally and externally, in order to help you access specific support, tailored to your individual needs. Within Student Services you’ll have a named contact, who can help support you before, during, and after college. How we support you: • • • • •
Discuss course options and provide assistance with completing the relevant forms The offer of a visit to see the facilities to help with orientation Provide guidance/advice on funding, childcare, discretionary, accommodation and travel Fast-track your funding application for non-advanced courses Introduce you to the Learning Development team
• • •
Help you access additional support services, such as, the counselling and chaplaincy service, mindfulness classes or health and wellbeing services Meet with you regularly and provide ongoing support Discuss how you’re progressing with your studies and offer support towards your next steps after college
Please note that the purpose of disclosing any personal information is to allow the College to offer you appropriate support, and it won’t prejudice your application in any way. THE INTERVIEW Applicants will normally be interviewed (unless this is impracticable due to distance). The interview allows the Course Leader to decide on the allocation of places and gives the applicant an opportunity to find out more about the College and specific courses. For most courses, there are far more applicants than places available. Therefore, before your interview you should think about any questions you may have regarding your choice of course, the College, or looking further ahead, your choice of career. The following topics will be discussed at interview: • • • • • • • •
Entry qualifications (bring all certificates with you to the interview) Your interest and motivation in choosing the course Content of the course and how you will be assessed Duration of the course The qualification you will receive at the end of the course and any opportunities for further study Career opportunities College links with other universities and colleges How to find out about funding
AFTER THE INTERVIEW You’ll be informed of the outcome of your application as soon as possible after your interview. The possible outcomes are: Conditional Offer This means that a place will be reserved for you on the course and you’ll be able to start your course if you meet the conditions stipulated in your offer letter, providing you return the acceptance slip and also submit evidence of meeting the additional requirements. The conditions you may be required to fulfil can include one or more of the following: •
• • • •
Requirement to obtain qualifications*. Any subject passes required in a conditional offer are in addition to the qualifications which you may already hold The College receiving satisfactory references The College receiving a completed Criminal Convictions Form The College receiving a satisfactory PVG report from Disclosure Scotland Requirement to submit a satisfactory essay
• •
Requirement to undergo practical testing The College receiving a letter of release from your school (under 16s) / Principal approval (under 16s)
Unconditional Offer This means that a place has been reserved for you and you’ll be able to start your study when the course commences without the need to fulfil any conditions, providing you return the acceptance slip. Waiting List This means that the College isn’t in a position to offer you a place. Your application will be reconsidered if places do become available. Unsuccessful This means that you have been unsuccessful in your application. Staff are always willing to advise applicants on how they might improve their qualifications. NOTE: a *If you’ve been awarded the required results, your conditional offer will be converted to an unconditional offer, providing you notify the College of your results as soon as they become available. If you’ve not obtained the precise qualifications requested in your offer you may still be considered for a place on the course or on an alternative course. b Offers of a place on a particular course are made in good faith. All reasonable steps will be taken to deliver courses as outlined in the College prospectus. However, unforeseen matters, including financial constraints and the number of students enrolling on a particular course, may affect the ability of the College to deliver courses in accordance with their descriptions. The College therefore reserves the right to vary the course content or method of delivery, to discontinue courses, to merge or combine courses or to restrict student numbers if such action is considered necessary and reasonable. If you accept an offer of a place on a course which subsequently does not proceed due to lack of numbers, the College will do all it can to find you a place on another course.
MULTIPLE OFFERS If you receive more than one unconditional offer from the College you must decide which one to accept. You can’t accept more than one offer from the College. If you accept an offer from the College and subsequently accept an offer from another institution, you must inform the College immediately. If you accept an unconditional offer of place, you’re unable to accept any other unconditional offer at another college within Lanarkshire. FEEDBACK Feedback on the outcome of the interview or test is not normally provided to either successful or unsuccessful applicants.
