ANNUAL REPORT & STRATEGIC PLAN

We are South Lanarkshire College. Our Board of Management would like to share this review with you. We hope you enjoy reading it. We published our 2014-2020 Strategic Plan, “20/20 Vision” after thorough consultation with students, staff, employers and other stakeholders. This report provides information about how well we’re delivering our 3 Strategic Priorities.

All quotes throughout this review are taken from the feedback provided by our students – look for this icon.

1

STRATEGIC PRIORITY SATISFIED STUDENTS

...Thanks for asking :-)

95% of our students reported satisfaction with their college experience. 36% reported being very satisfied.

98% of our students said they were being encouraged to develop good learning and study skills. A total of 1,500 students responded to our autumn 2016 survey.

East Kilbride is the sixth largest conurbation in . Scotland. During our growth we’ve maintained high student attainment rates with a large proportion of students going straight into employment at the end of their courses.

The lecturers are supportive. They make learning less of a challenge and more of an ambition to do well.

Our annual professional learning development activities ensure we’re as up to date as possible with current and future industry practices.

We’re the first College in the UK to achieve Investors in People at Platinum level.

Our positive culture and ethos help us deliver first class outcomes for students. I’m impressed with how staff do their jobs and the way they treat students.

Recently-released SFC data (Jan 2017) show our Higher Education (HE) full-time student attainment rates are the highest in Scotland.

Our full-time Further Education (FE) student attainment rates are well above the Scottish average. I’m enjoying this course and appreciate all the help and encouragement.

An increasing proportion of our students progress directly to year 2 or 3 at university (articulation with advanced standing). The most popular route has been to the University of the West of Scotland. Students have also been successful in articulating with advanced standing to: Glasgow Caledonian University; University of Glasgow; University of Strathclyde; Edinburgh Napier University; University of Stirling; Robert Gordon University and Heriot-Watt University. ***HIGHLY RECOMMEND!***

3

STRATEGIC PRIORITY WE AIM TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE BEHAVIOURS

By taking positive measures during our period of considerable growth, we’ve reduced our carbon footprint by 36%.2 Mitigating actions include: solar photovoltaic and thermal panels; ground and air source heat pumps to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels; LED lighting and rainwater harvesting. Our two newest buildings are sectorleading, well-insulated low energy, low carbon structures. 2

...the College is excellent.

We received our second prestigious UK Green Gown award in November 2016 for our pioneering, new net-zero carbon building, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. It’s also the first building in the UK to achieve an ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM 2014 certificate.

We sent 804,825 emails in 2016! Each 50 kilobyte email message used around 8 billion electrons.3 Our total weight of email traffic (estimated) came to less than one billionth of an ounce. If we’d sent letters instead, they would’ve: • weighed over 8 tonnes • cost £498,991.50 in postage stamps • required 160 gallons of fluid to seal the envelopes!

Our funded price per credit of £220.26 was significantly below the Scottish average of £231.63 and the Regional average price of £224.55. We provide excellent value for money as a public body through our very high student attainment rates, high proportion of students going directly into jobs at the end of their courses and low unit costs. Our lean, efficient approaches, prudent budgeting and sectorleading IT systems helped us balance our books.
