Welcome from the Principal I’m delighted that you’re considering studying at South Lanarkshire College (SLC) and I hope that this booklet helps you in selecting your course of study. Students from all over the world have chosen to study at South Lanarkshire College. Just like you they benefit from learning from an international perspective, from experiencing new cultures and from becoming more fluent in English. We know that choosing to study overseas is a big decision and I hope that this booklet provides you with the information that you need to help you take that step. The booklet shows in detail the courses and programmes that we offer for international students at South Lanarkshire College and gives you information on the wide range of support that’s there to help you be successful in your chosen career. Scotland is a world class provider of education and training, offering a pathway to students from around the world to enhance their learning, whilst developing their understanding of the Scottish culture and business practices. Scotland has long attracted international students due to the opportunities offered by our fantastic educational establishments and our reputation for warm, friendly hospitality. It’ll come as no surprise, therefore, to tell you that over 48,000 international students studied in Scotland last year, studying a wide range of subjects at colleges and universities and taking advantage of the enjoyable and exciting lifestyle on offer.

Recreational activities are readily available such as fishing, climbing, walking, skiing and golf. For those of you who enjoy shopping, Glasgow boasts the UK’s largest retail centre outside of London. The ‘Style Mile’ in Glasgow city centre is home to malls, high street chains, department stores and independent boutiques. It really is a shopper’s paradise! You’ll never be short of things to do. Scotland is a beautiful country, famous worldwide for its scenery. Mountains, lochs, glens and coastline all steeped in history and tradition surround us. There are castles, palaces and country houses with beautiful gardens; museums and art galleries; theatres, clubs, cinemas and exhibition centres nearby. Every year the world famous Edinburgh International Festival and Military Tattoo take place in Scotland’s capital. The Glasgow Comedy Festival and Celtic Connections Festival are also fantastic annual events.

LIVING IN AND AROUND EAST KILBRIDE

Living in and around East Kilbride South Lanarkshire College is in East Kilbride. East Kilbride is Scotlandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6th largest town and is around twenty minutes drive from Glasgow city centre. East Kilbride offers the best of both worlds - lots of parks and green country fields as well as excellent shopping, recreation and cultural facilities. Excellent transport links to Glasgow and Edinburgh make East Kilbride an ideal location. London is only a one hour flight away from Glasgow. East Kilbride is home to many high tech industries and globally renowned companies such as Coca Cola, Rolls Royce and Burns Stewart Whisky Distillers. There are lots of fun things to do near the College - we have a country park right on our doorstep, a loch where you can take part in water sports and there are a number of gyms and swimming pools. We also have several golf courses, a cinema, an ice rink, a Playsport centre which includes freestyle jumping, a theatre, an arts centre and lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. The town centre is home to a large mall with 180 shops, catering and leisure outlets.

COST OF LIVING

Close to our campus in East Kilbride there are two international airports - one in Glasgow and one in Edinburgh. Scotland’s airports link directly with many major international airports including at least two daily flights to Dubai from Glasgow and numerous flights to London every day.

In addition to your course fees, we would recommend budgeting for around £11,000 for living expenses over a year. Of course, this figure is an indication and will vary for each individual. Everyone knows that one person’s weekly budget might only last another person a couple of days. In this guide we aim to give you a good idea of costs, but much depends on your own personal choices. In addition, there are extensive rail and road links across the country and into Scotland. In and around East Kilbride and Glasgow there’s an extensive bus and train network making it very easy to get around whichever mode of transport you choose. ACCOMMODATION

You choose the type of accommodation that’s right for you. When you first arrive, we’ll arrange a week’s free accommodation for you and during that time we’ll help you to find more permanent accommodation. Some students choose to live in Halls of Residence nearby. Many students like to live in private, rented accommodation with other students. We’re here to help you at every step and will assist you in finding somewhere to live.

PROGRESSION ROUTES When you successfully complete your studies at SLC you may wish to progress to university to complete a Degree. We have excellent university links and we’ll work with you to identify a suitable programme and can help you with your application. ACADEMIC SUPPORT It’s important to us that all learners benefit from a positive experience while studying at SLC. Our high quality of academic support allows you to make the most of your learning environment, helping you to achieve your full potential.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT All SLC staff are approachable and lecturers are available to guide learners through their studies. Many departments operate an open learning environment where learners can speak with lecturers on a one-to-one basis. There are guidance sessions every week, which learners can use to discuss course queries as and when they arise. Help is always on hand when needed! GUIDANCE TUTOR Learners are also assigned a guidance tutor who’ll be available to talk about any aspect of the course and help with course related questions. You’ll find this particularly useful as it provides a consistent and reliable solution to course related issues.

MOODLE Our web-based learning platform Moodle provides access from any location to online course materials. ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUPPORT International students are offered English language support throughout your time at SLC. IELTS preparation and testing is offered at no extra cost to international students. SMALL CLASS SIZES Learners benefit from small class sizes of around 20 people meaning that you receive the support needed to achieve your goals.

THE INTERNATIONAL OFFICE Our International Office team takes a personal interest in the welfare of our international students. We get to know all of our students and are here to help you as best we can. We’ll make arrangements for you to be picked up from the airport when you arrive, we’ll help you to arrange accommodation, we’ll help you to get a mobile phone and Wi-Fi access. We’ll help you to open a bank account and to register with a doctor. If you need assistance with anything, just ask! Throughout your time at the College we’ll arrange outings and cultural activities to help you experience life in Scotland and to make the most of your time here. APPLYING TO STUDY AT SLC

Applying to study at SLC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must demonstrate that you meet the entry requirements for the programme that you wish to study. Normally you should have successfully completed at least your high school leaving certificate. Some courses will have additional entry requirements so please have a look on our website www.slc. ac.uk for details. We recognise that international applicants from around the world have a wide range of relevant qualifications and therefore we consider all applications on their own merit. If you require further advice about subject choice, entry requirements or the application process please contact the International Office: international@slc.ac.uk ENGLISH LANGUAGE All applicants whose first language is a language other than English (including applicants from the EEA and Switzerland) will need to have an IELTS certificate. Applicants to HNC or HND courses must be able to demonstrate an IELTS score of at least 5.0 in all components: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students from outside the EEA or Switzerland also need to make sure that they meet the UK Visas and Immigration (part of the Home Office) requirements for English

language. We recommend that you check their website for the most upto-date requirements: www.gov.uk/tier-4-generalvisa/knowledge-of-english HOW TO APPLY Students from the EEA and Switzerland are able to apply for any course that the College offers. Please check our website for our full list of courses. Students from outside the EEA and Switzerland are able to apply for courses at HNC level and above. You’ll find details of these courses further on in this booklet. You can apply online at www.slc.ac.uk or email international@slc.ac.uk and we’ll send you an application form. We recommend that you submit your application as early as possible and at least by the end of May if you plan to start college in August. When you submit your application form you’ll also be required to upload the following supporting documents: • Copies of all relevant academic documents (transcripts in addition to award certificate) • IELTS test certificate (see English Language section)

• Copy of passport (front cover, photograph page, signature page and visa page if applicable) • Statement of intent Please note that all correspondence from the College in relation to international applications will be conducted via email. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can about your application. Successful applicants will receive a Conditional Offer via email, which will give conditions on academic matters, tuition fees, finance, methods of payment and our refund policy. Your Conditional Offer will contain details of how to make arrangements for an interview with staff from the College. Please note that all international students will be interviewed as part of the application process. Applicants who are successful at interview and who have met all the other conditions set out in their Conditional Offer letter will be invited to pay their course fees. Once full payment of the first year course fee has been received by the College, a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (known as a CAS) and an Unconditional Offer will be issued. If you’re a student from outside of the EEA or Switzerland, you’ll need to apply for a visa to study in with us. COURSES

Courses We have a wide range of programmes on offer which lead to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) awards. The HND is the equivalent to the first two years at university and many learners who complete the HND transfer directly in to the third year of a relevant university Degree programme. Our fees are considerably lower than university fees so SLC is a very attractive option for international learners.

On successful completion of a course at South Lanarkshire College we’ll help with your next step. If you choose to progress on to university we have articulation agreements in place with several well known universities and can help you to make an informed choice about the future. In addition to the courses mentioned in this booklet we also offer Pre-Masters programmes for students who already have a Degree or diploma from their home country, who need an additional qualification in order to go on to a Masters Degree at university. Our reputation for quality is outstanding. Scottish qualifications are recognised and respected worldwide. In 2007 SLC was the first college in Scotland to have learning and teaching graded Very Good (the maximum grade) in every subject area reviewed by Education Scotland (formerly Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education). This achievement was repeated in 2011 in our last full inspection, when the inspector’s review, based on the new review criteria, again resulted in the College having the best review report in the sector. Education Scotland found many examples of excellence and sector-leading practice at SLC.

Faculty of Business The Faculty of Business is a dynamic, diverse Faculty, offering a wide range of courses ranging from very practical courses such as Hospitality and Professional Cookery to largely theoretical courses such as Accounting and Business.
