2015/2016 Event Update

What’s Going

Event Update 2015 Freshers’ Week 2015 Freshers’ week 2015 went off with a bang as we welcomed a wide range of organisations to provide students with guidance and advice on everything from volunteering to fitness and personal finance to travel. There was a hive of activity in the main atrium during the 5 day event with plenty of student freebies and deals up for grabs. Capital FM kept us tuned in with music and laughter which really got the party started! Other fun activities included a balloon modeller, caricaturist, face painter and a photo booth. Feedback received has been brilliant so thanks to all staff and students for participating and making it such a fun event.

Well done to all our 2015 Graduates! Congratulations to all the SLCek students who graduated at the College Graduation Ceremony in Hamilton Town House on Tuesday 17 November. This year a record number of students were eligible to graduate and 278 students registered to attend the Graduation. Celebrations1 for the 278 students and their families began with a warm welcome to the ceremony by the Principal. Stewart addressed the audience, congratulating the students on their achievements and thanking their families for all the support given to the students during their studies. After the presentation to graduands and prizewinners, Jane McCartney, Chair of the Board of Management, congratulated the students and wished them all the very best for the future. Huge congratulations and very well done to all our 2015 graduates!

Graduation Dinner 2015 As part of the celebrations for Graduation 2015, students were invited to a Graduation Dinner on 16th November. Staff from across the College joined the students at the Bruce Hotel to celebrate their success. Students enjoyed a drinks reception, three course meal, photobooth, magicians and entertainment from musicians. A great night of celebration!

Event Update 2016 New ‘BREEAM’ Building Every year South Lanarkshire College invites more and more students to join the SLC experience! To meet growing demand for space, construction of a new building began in 2015. The new building is now complete and is the first of its type in the UK, with 0 carbon emissions. It was built using the latest construction technologies and materials with energy being provided by solar panels installed on the roof. The building will be heated and ventilated using a ground source heating system, which will pump water from a depth of 203m and circulate it to an under floor heating system. The new 2 storey building incorporates a reception area and 8 classrooms fully equipped with pcs, 4 on each floor. A lift is available to provide access to the upper floor. The new classes have now been timetabled and Angela Constance MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, will conduct the official opening ceremony on Wednesday 24th February.

Sustainability Event

Thursday 11th February

The SA Sustainability Event was a great success. Students really engaged with the idea behind the event and participated in the activities. Cycle Friendly Scotland’s smoothie bike was a big hit and so too were the bike health checks . Our staff and students clearly love cycling! The tours of the new building were incredibly popular too. Over 200 students visited the building and took a guided tour with Mr James Jamieson. We would like to say a huge thanks to Mr Jamieson for giving up his time on the day. Our Swap Shop1for dvds and games was also a success and we have decided to run this every fortnight due to popular demand so please check the SA Office for further information.
