By Mark Ribble KINGSVILLE — When Gary Lauzon got the call last Friday from the Hogs for Hospice committee, he couldn’t believe he’d just won $120,170 in the first annual Hogs for Hospice 50/50 draw. The fundraiser was underway for the last three weeks and at press time last week, the prize had just climbed to over $50,000. In the final three days, that prize more than doubled. “I’m still in shock,” said Lauzon. “I just made a donation and thought it was a good thing to do.” On Monday, August 17, members of the Hogs for Hospice committee, along with Erie Shores Health Foundation Executive Director Christine Colautti, converged upon Lauzon’s home in Kingsville to present the cheque.

joked. Lauzon praised the Hogs committee for the work they do in the community. “You guys are phenomenal,” he said. “I realize all the work you put in.” Hogs committee member Joe Oswald commented that it was unique to be giving away all that money. “We are so used to presenting a big cheque to the hospice, but it’s different to be presenting a big cheque to one lucky supporter,” he said. Oswald was quick to thank their sponsors for all their help. “If not for the support of the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers, CIBC Wood Gundy, Seabrook Financial Group and Christine Colautti at the Erie Shores Health Foundation, we wouldn’t be able to do what we did here,” he said. “We are forever grateful to them.” As for Lauzon, he has no immediate plans for the cash, but has fielded some unusual offers. “I’ve had two online offers of marriage and someone Hogs for Hospice 50/50 raffle who has asked to be adopted,” he winner Gary Lauzon. Leamington passes mask bylaw By Mark Ribble LEAMINGTON — At the August 11 Leamington council meeting, council passed a mandatory mask bylaw to help strengthen the already-in-place mask mandate handed down by the Windsor Essex County Health Unit a few weeks ago. After some spirited discussion on the matter, council passed the bylaw by a vote of 3-2. Deputy Mayor Larry Verbeke and Councillor Bill Dunn opposed the motion. John Hammond was not present. This requirement is effective immediately and means that, with some exemptions, all persons, including staff, customers or visitors entering an indoor public space are required to wear a mask or face covering. The mandatory mask by-law applies to the following indoor public spaces: Transit vehicles, commercial establishments where goods and services are sold to customers, including retail stores; convenience stores; malls and plazas. Restaurants, personal service settings, grocery stores and bakeries, gas stations, farmer’s markets, areas of

mechanics shops, garages, repair shops which are open to the public, and car dealerships. Also, any community centres, libraries, museums, art galleries, theatres or performing arts centres, community service offices, banquet halls, convention centres, arenas, stadiums or other event spaces. You are also required to wear a mask in laundromats, common areas, including waiting areas, lobbies, service counters, washrooms, hallways, stairwells and elevators, unless such area is within a residential apartment building or condominium. The bylaw does not apply to schools, daycare centres, day camps, athletic training facilities, churches and other places of worship, hospitals and independent health facilities. “Our community continues to fight against COVID-19, and Council’s decision to mandate masks in indoor public spaces ensures we protect our residents while helping our businesses recover and our economy grow,” said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “This is a small sacrifice we can all make for the greater good of our community.”

LEAMINGTON — Youngsters looking to escape the heat at the Seacliff Park splashpad will have to wait until next summer. The photo above shows the idle water attraction in contrast to the busy playground behind it. Playgrounds within the municipality were opened with the announcement of Stage 3, but council decided last week to keep the splashpad closed for the season, citing difficulty in enforcing social distancing. Meanwhile, the newly named Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Complex has been tabbed to have a soft re-opening, with user groups allowed to book the pool, gym and ice rinks going forward. The complex is not yet open for use by the general public. Sun photo

LEAMINGTON — The Municipality of Leamington has issued a plan to gradually re-open the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Centre. The complex remains closed to the public as Leamington continues to host the COVID-19 Assessment Centre in the gymnasium as well as the emergency isolation pods in the Highbury Canco rink. Limited access is currently available for ice and pool rentals with organizations and groups that have specific COVID-19 guidelines in place. Booking requests can be directed to bookings@

leamington.ca. The introduction of some outdoor fitness classes will also be allowed. In the fall, the municpality will introduce use of the gym, weight room, courts, pool and fitness studio by advance registration only and in adherence with capacity and physical distancing guidelines. Return to regular programming will not occur until 2021, with adherence to capacity and physical distancing guidelines. More information is available on the website at leamington.ca/COVID-19.

Go Fund Me campaign raises over $24,000

Kingsville family thankful for outpouring from community By Mark Ribble KINGSVILLE — The Stevenson family of Kingsville is thankful their daughter is alive, but also thankful to so many in the community who have supported them during their year-long ordeal that started on May 19, 2019. Jill and Todd Stevenson and their children Zoe, who will turn 15 this weekend, and Quinton, now 11, have been the subject of a recent Go Fund Me campaign that raised over $24,000. Their next door neighbours, the Martinho family, have always been close with the Stevensons, and Caroline Martinho and her daughter Meaghan took the initiative to start the Go Fund Me page to help the Stevensons out. “We are so thankful to Caroline, Meaghan and their family,” said Jill. “The whole community has been a blessing.” “The overwhelming support of family, friends, neighbours and the community is something we cannot put into words,” added Todd. The ordeal began on May 19 of last year, when Zoe decided to go for a ride on a mini dirt bike. As usual, she took all the precautions — wore a helmet and was a very careful rider. “She’s not a daredevil or anything,” said Todd. “She’s always careful with stuff like that.” The freak accident that happened next, set in motion a series of events that would Zoe enjoying some d r a s t i c a l l y time at the waterfront. alter the Stevenson family’s everyday life. Zoe and the bike collided with a boat that was parked on a trailer and the point of impact was at Zoe’s throat. Luckily, an off-duty paramedic was visiting that day and lifesaving procedures were started immediately on Zoe. She was conscious, but was helplessly gasping for air. “We’re very fortunate that everything perfectly aligned,” said Todd. The two EMS personnel who arrived by ambulance were both advanced, veteran paramedics and the family counts that as a main factor in saving Zoe’s life. Someone was looking over Zoe on that day, from the paramedic being present, to the firefighters and EMS on scene

without difficulty.” The Stevensons are proud of the way their daughter has responded to life’s curve ball. “She has her down days but they are far outweighed by the up days,” said Jill. “Her attitude is, ‘it is what it is’.” She’s been able to participate in school lessons virtually, but has fallen a little behind because of her ordeal. She completely missed her first year of high school and is on the verge of missing her second year. The waiting game they are playing now revolves around a full throat reconstruction surgery they are hopeful for. They also kept a daily journal to document not only Zoe’s daily progress, but also to document those who have helped along the way. Firefighters and EMS showed up to see how she was progressing. “We’re extremely blessed to have our daughter,” said Todd. “As bad as it is, it could have turned out much worse.” Prior to the accident, Zoe was an avid volleyball player on her school team and had 10 years of dance under her belt. This past year, she was able to keep stats for her teams, but it wasn’t the same as being out there playing. In the year that has transpired since the accident, Todd says his daughter has adapted and transitioned to other interests. “She’s now cooking, playing the piano and reading more,” he said. “She’s an amazing kid and has figured out a way to transition to those things she can do

where the generosity of friends, family and even complete strangers, comes in. Because she has to rely on her tracheostomy to support her breathing, Zoe’s parents are never far from their daughter. If she wants to visit with friends, Todd or Jill have to be close by to keep an eye on her oxygen levels. It’s hoped that the impending surgery will help with that. “The Go Fund Me campaign is such a great idea,” said Jill. “And we are so thankful.” “It’s been amazing to watch,” said Todd. The page has also helped uplift Zoe’s spirits on those down days, as she’s been able to see familiar names on the donation list. But mostly, it helps this close-knit family through one of the toughest ordeals anyone would have to endure. The money raised from the Go Fund Me campaign will help offset costs of trips to Toronto, tutoring programs for school and needs for Zoe’s recovery, such as physiotherapy, language therapy, equipment and medications. Doctors expect the surgery to be performed this fall, but cannot give a definite date yet because of the COVID pandemic. The Stevenson family, meanwhile, goes about their altered daily routine, waiting for the big day when Zoe will get her surgery, and hopefully gain back her independence.

Speed the waters of Lake Erie. And just like magic, the lazy hazy cra-boat rides were available from the Cedar Beach Drug Store for 50 cents a ride for summer visitors renting a cabin or for cottagers not owning a boat. The boats could be taken through the placid canal or out into the rougher waters of Lake Erie. This photograph of an unidentified family, standing outside the Cedar Beach Drug Store, was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

Where has the summer gone? As August moves along, I just want to stop and think of the best of times spent when we were young. Remember when you could just relax and and listen to the music? A simple man could take great pleasure from spinning those old 45s. A hazy shade of winter turns to spring showers and flowers and a little bit of sunshine. April becomes May and then June arrives and schools out for summer. Before you can say see you in September, you realize you’ve been home all summer long with no particular place to go. If I could put time in a bottle, I’d have the secret to my happiness. We’d all be happy to have a place to return to. Public board wants more details on back-to-school plan By Ron Giofu ESSEX COUNTY — Trustees with the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) discussed the public board’s back-to-school plan for almost fourand-a-half hours last week but still wanted more information. Trustees wanted more information on an outbreak plan should students or staff contract COVID-19 symptoms and asked that administration provide more details on what that plan would look like. Trustee Julia Burgess made the request, believing trustees need to obtain that information with parents also very eager to know what that will look like. Trustee Aimee Omstead agreed, saying it is important for parents to have that information before making a choice on whether to send their children back to class. It was one of many motions that were debated at last Tuesday night’s meeting. Public board trustees agreed to send a letter to the Ontario government requesting additional funding to reduce class sizes to 15 at the elementary level though administration warned of challenges. Superintendent Todd Awender cautioned there is not enough space in most schools to accommodate that.

Hospice grateful to Hogs committee, community for 50/50 raffle

Dear Editor: The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County wishes to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Hogs For Hospice on an incredibly successful 50/50 Raffle. Not only was it exciting to watch the momentum of the raffle grow, it was the overwhelming and generous community support that was palpable! Congratulations to Gary Lauzon for winning over $120,000! A special thank you to everyone who purchased tickets, to all the sponsors, as well as to the Hogs for Hospice Board of Directors and Erie Shores Health Foundation for your incredible support of our Hospice of Windsor and Essex County – Erie Shores Campus. Although we are living in challenging times it is such an honour to be serving this community. Sincere thanks for supporting our Hospice and we look forward to a phenomenal Hogs for Hospice event in 2021. Sincerely, Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Board of Directors

“The space would not be there,” he said. Trustee Cathy Cooke said she was still concerned over class sizes and supported the motion that was put forth by trustee Linda Qin. “I don’t think we are doing enough,” said Cooke. “We need to step up and be loud. We need to support this and do it.” “Let’s think outside the box,” added Omstead, suggesting churches, gyms, community centres and outdoor classrooms be used. Safety is paramount here. I don’t think it’s asking too much.” “I personally believe it adds assurance,” added Cooke. “It may not be perfect but it adds assurances.” Cooke also didn’t believe it would cause line-ups to get into buildings, as administration believes. “It doesn’t take forever. It does not hold up lines,” she said. There were also concerns over masks and some trustees had a desire to have all grades wear them. As it stands, masks for students in Grades 4-12 will be mandatory with it being “strongly encouraged” for JK-Grade 3. Burgess and Omstead had particular concerns over Leamington and Kingsville with Omstead saying she has seen churches in that area with 200-300 cars at it and people regularly not wearing masks in stores. “Putting students and staff in school without masks is leading us to danger,” Omstead believed. Burgess and Omstead also floated the concept of having schools in Leamington and Kingsville start later in September due to risks over the virus but Kelly indicated that was not possible. “We are legally bound,” said Kelly. “We have to keep schools open and have to have them open for children who want to attend.”

BABY HAMSTERS

This week’s pet of the week is…… baby hamsters! That’s right, we have multiple pets of the week because the humane society has lots of hamsters! These little guys came from 4 separate litters when their moms were surrendered to the humane society all expecting. After growing up in foster homes, these little ones, (all around 1 month old,) are back and ready to find homes of their own! Think you’d like to adopt one of these sleepy, adorable babies into your family? Visit windsorhumane.org and apply online today!

Kelly noted during her presentation the elementary schools will be open for five days per week with a quadmester system also to be used at the secondary level. The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is also instituting a quadmester concept. Under the public board’s plan, secondary students in cohort “A” would attend school Mondays and Thursdays and alternating Wednesdays while cohort “B” would attend Tuesdays and Fridays and alternating Wednesdays. Superintendent Shelley Armstrong indicated the GECDSB is “adopting multiple levels of safety protocols” including social distancing and hand washing to removing excess furniture and having “grab and go” snacks on nutrition breaks. Cafeterias and lockers will not be used at the secondary level, she added. “There will be no rentals or community use of schools until at least Dec. 31,” said Armstrong. Bus drivers will keep a record of their cleaning protocols, she added, and there will be a maximum of 48 students per bus with students to be assigned seats based on classroom cohorts or they will sit with family members. More details on that plan are at www.buskids.ca, she noted. Cooke did not think assigned seating on a bus is a doable plan. “It will not work. It will never work,” she said. Trustees also discussed topics such as portables, ventilation, and use of PPE among other issues.

Letter to Editor

Writer questions auto insurance

LAKESIDE PARK SEWER CONSTRUCTION KINGSVILLE — Lakeside Park in Kingsville would have been bustling with musicians on the weekend of August 7-9, but due to COVID-19, instead it’s bustling with construction machinery and workers. Henry Heyink Construction is overseeing the installation of a new sanitary sewer line being built through Lakeside Park, connecting the existing town pump station to the west side of Queen Street. Construction began in early June and continues into August. Photo by Carolyn Wolf

Dear Editor: This letter has been sent to Doug Ford, Dave Epp, The Windsor Star and Sean O’Shea, who is a trouble shooter at Global TV in Toronto. I recently received my statement from my insurance company and much to my shock, they have increased my monthly payments to almost $40. I was totally dumbfounded at this outrageous increase and have decided to not sit on my hands and do nothing but to get to the bottom of this. Their reasoning for this substantial increase is to keep pace with rising costs and my policy has been amended to reflect this change. What change? They also state that their committment to me is their number one priority. REALLY? I am a 78 year old retired lady, living on a fixed income, and yes, I do have bills to pay. I very rarely go out with the exception of grocery shopping every other week, and there are many days that my car does not move. So my question to this insurance company (and others as well) is — with my age and lack of car usage, what in God’s earth warrants increasing my car insurance by almost $40? Judging by the way people drive these days, it’s no wonder that there are are many car crashes, thus boosting car insurance rates, but does that reflect on those that are careful drivers? So many time I see drivers speeding, erratic driving methods, not using turn signals (my pet peeve) and tailgaiting (leave earlier!). I have heard from different people that this has happened to them as well, and their elderly parents too — so very unfair! Makes me wonder just whose pockets are being lined so handsomely. Mine are getting emptier too often! Sincerely, Mary J. MacVicar

Jamieson Tour enjoys stop at Beach Grove The Jamieson Golf Tour stopped at Beach Grove on Monday August 10, where players got to enjoy the Stanley Thompson design along with a cool breeze from Lake St. Clair. In the Junior Girls’ Division, Jillian Friyia (London Area) won her fourth event in her fourth start, edging out Kyla Charlebois (Pointe West) and Vanessa Ardovini (Roseland) by one shot. Friya recorded nines of 40-38, while Charlebois was 40-39, and Ardovini was 41-38. In the Collegiate Women’s Division, Brooke MacKinnon (Hartford University) took home her second victory of the season with a three-over par 75. MacKinnon recorded nines of 38-37, with birdies on holes #5 and #17. In second place was Erin Kopinak (Delaware State University) with a score of 89. In the Junior Boys’ Division, there was a two-way tie for first, with both Steven Hill (Essex) and Tyler Hurtubise (Pointe West) firing three-under par 69. You will need to pre-register with the Lakeshore Horse Racing Association by calling 519566-6547. The August 16 race card drew a field of 48 horses across the 10 race event. The handle was $7611.

SOL LEAM CUP WINNERS LEAMINGTON — The Blue Team won the 2020 edition of the Sol Leam Cup, which wrapped up August 12 at Erie Shores Golf Course. The Blues were captained by Cheryl Rutgers, and they narrowly defeated the Reds, which were captained by Jo-Anne Smith. Although this years Sol Leam Cup was played under strict COVID rules, the competition still had the same fun and gamesmanship as always, with credit to sponsors, Lisa Fehr and Lisa Sawatsky, whose generosity made the event a great success. In front are: Mary Wilson, Captain Cheryl Rutgers, Jean Penner, Lisa Fehr, Judy Butler. Erie Shores Thursday Night League continues to attract golfers By Paul Bunnett-Jones We may be well into the dog days of summer but Erie Shores is still packed with record numbers of golfers just about every day from 7:00 am until 8:30 pm and Thursdays are no exception with the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League pulling in its highest numbers ever in the past 30 plus years. Oddly, even with its fine crop of low handicap players, no one has done much damage this season to the former records of low gross scores. This week, no one broke par and one of its finest southpaws, Neil Sawatzky, was the overall low leader for the second time in five weeks by shooting a smooth even par round of 36. Tied for second place with one over par scores of 37 was Joe Schnekenburger, Tim Tiessen and Club Pro Ryan Peltier. Another five players managing to tie for fifth spot with two over par scores of 38’s included Brad Melton, Mitch Amicone,

Matt Dick, Kyle Kudroch and Brian Humphreys. In the handicap division, Phil Cornies and Connor MacKinnon tied for low spot with impressive six under par net rounds of 30 to finish one stroke in front of Tim Tiessen and Ian Munro who both finished with five under par net 31’s. Mitch Amicone, Garth Dennerley, Joe Schnekenburger and Kevin Kantati all tied for fifth place with four under par net 32’s. In Team play, the Cin-

Talbot Trail Seniors field 58 golfers By Bob McLean On August 11, there were 58 seniors who tested their golfing skills. The outside workers have welcomed a hard worker — Cameron Symons, to their crew. Joe Drummond led the under 70s with an excellent 39. Terrific 40s were shot by Nasher and Arkey. Phil Humphries enjoyed shooting his outstanding 41. Fred Michano shot a superb 43. Others who earned satisfying results less than 50 were: Tim Stevenson, Ian Quirk, Gerry van Deven, Herb Reid, Art Regehr and Dave Dibbley. In our 70-79 grouping, Dutchy produced a masterful 38 to best Paul Harrison, who was on fire, by one shot. Outstanding 41s were shot by Bill Ward and Chopper. An inspiring 42 was achieved by Ron McCracken. Both Ray la Pierre and

Al Matthews carved out magnificent 43s. Scores of 49 or less: Bobo, Larry Hyatt, Gary Honey, Eugene Abbruzzese, Richard Humber (welcome

back), Mac Hyatt, Gus Brown, Wayne Humber, Dave Dent. There was a flood of nifty fifty shooters: Bob Lee, Gary Wilson, Ross MacKintosh, Schmidty, Al Zanuttini. A 20 foot long putt drained by Ray on #2 was the winning shot. There was no winner for the Closest to the pin as someone appar-

ently tried to play a practical joke. Please let the best shot win! Vic Reynaert was the leader in the 80-85 section by firing an excellent 45. Excellent results of 46 and 47 were shot by Ed Woelk and Joe Vrtel respectively. Other satisfying results were earned by: Andy Orsini, Bill Edwards, Walter Balsam, Neil Adamson, Terry Bee (Happy Birthday) and Ken Womack. In the Super senior “Silver” division, Tom Hyatt continued his inspiring play by shooting a 44. Steady playing Bob Freure scored a very praiseworthy 48. Everyone In the ‘Gold’ division played well today. Dave la Bonte charged to the front with a masterful 4. Carl Robinson and Gerry Becigneul earned terrific 47s. Very praiseworthy results went to Andy, Scotty, and Erle.

Another 1940 Chevy convertible General Motors built 11,820 Chevrolet convertibles for the 1940 model year. All these cars were built at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan. Here is the story of two of them, likely both sold new in Ontario. John Magill of Midland, Ontario, was 19 in 1954 and living in the west end of Toronto when he bought a 1940 Chevrolet convertible with no engine, no headlights, no dashboard, no steering wheel, and no top. He snapped it up for $25.00 and began working on it. He installed a six cylinder GMC “Jimmy” engine hopped up for more horsepower. He also installed a new convertible top and went to a Pontiac dealership and purchased a brand new 1955 Pontiac turquoise steering

wheel for his old Chevy. With the extra horsepower, he and two friends went to see the stock car races at the CNE grounds. On the way home, they were at a red light when a motorcycle cop challenged them to a drag race. When the light turned green, the cop took off and John and his two friends all ended up in the back seat! John had forgotten to bolt it down. The cop circled back and couldn’t stop laughing! When John went back to school in 1956, he sold the ’40 Chev convertible and never saw it again. But he never forgot about the fun he had when he owned it. Now fast forward to 2017. John and his wife Mary are living in Midland, Ontario, and John heard about a ’40 Chevy

convertible for sale near Omemee, Ontario. It wasn’t the one he owned over 60 years earlier and this one needed a lot of work, but hey! We can only be nineteen twice in a life! He bought it, or rather what was left of it, and brought it home. He then joined the National Chevrolet Owners Club and made contact with a member

living in Arizona who was an expert on the 1940 Chevy convertible. With that person’s help and a lot of new body panels purchased, the old car began to take shape once again. It is now fully restored and John is thrilled whenever he goes for a drive! I’m always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca.
