According to Ashley Rocheleau — one of the orga nizers at the field Saturday — the aim this year is to raise $5,000 for Ronald McDonald House to sponsor one of the rooms. She said they also hope to then raise more funds to make a donation to Mental Health Windsor-Essex, as it is also much needed locally. The sunflower field includes two viewing paths, one for the public and one for private bookings for photographers with props and even a section for a small outdoor wedding venue. In the past two years, Sunflowers 4 Smiles has raised and donated $17,000. For more information and bookings, check out the Sunflowers 4 Smiles Facebook page.

By Mark Ribble Friday August 5 is a day that Jamie Poisson will re member for the rest of her life. That was the day she got the call from the sev en members of the Hogs for Hospice Board, who had gathered through a conference call to give her some good news. “I thought it was a phone scam,” she said. “That was followed by disbelief.” On the other end of the line, the Hogs Board, led by Joe Oswald, was asking Jamie if she knew of any reason that they would be discussing her name. Once it became appar ent that she was the big winner of the 50-50 draw, the group all discussed how it would change things for Jamie and her family.Just before they hung up, she asked one last question. “How much was it again?” she asked. As they repeated the number ($587,125), she couldn’t believe her ears. “The last she checked, it was at $80,000,” said Oswald, as he handed her the cheque this past Mon day at Erie Shores Hos pice.“This truly changes our lives,” said Jamie. “We have five kids at home be tween us and this makes things much easier.” She and her fiancé Jus tin have now been able to set a wedding date, some thing they hadn’t been able to do before the big win. She also bought a brand new Chrysler Pacifica, which she picked up Tues day.She was in the bedroom folding laundry when the call came, and although she stayed somewhat composed during that call, she says she was a bundle of tears when she started calling her family. “I don’t think anyone understood what I was saying,” she said. In the midst of making those calls, she received another call from Joe Os wald, prompting her to answer with, “You’re not calling to say you made a mistake, are you?” Joe laughed and said he just needed to get some more information that had been forgotten in the ex citement of the first call. For now, they are going to use some of the money for the new vehicle and a deposit on their wedding venue, but Jamie says it’s best to sit on the rest and take time to make any life-altering decisions. The $587,125 far eclipses the previous high amount of $120,170 won by Gary Lauzon in the first Hogs draw in Oswald2020.says the whole thing played out like a dream. “We were all watch ing in amazement as the amount just kept grow ing,” he said of the com mittee. Of course, the other big winner is Erie Shores Hos pice, which receives the other $587,125 of the ticket sales proceeds and that’s what it’s all about. “We have the most in credible supporters and followers,” he said. “Over 1,500 strangers all reached out to Jamie on Facebook to congratulate her. That’s special.”“Wealready knew our supporters were spe cial, but this just brings it home,” he added. Jamie — who was on the receiving end of those well wishes — eventually had to turn her phone off. “It was going off every few seconds,” she said. “It was amazing.”

RAISING FUNDS FOR HUMANE SOCIETY

Isaiah Fraser, 8, at his lemonade stand on Main Street in Kingsville Saturday morning, August 13. He is on a mission to raise funds for the Windsor/Essex Humane Society and for surgery for his beloved eight-month-old rabbit “Ellie” to be spayed. He recently presented the Humane Society with a cheque for $214 (half the proceeds) from a previous lemonade and cookie stand and is halfway to his goal of $409 for Ellie’s surgery. According to mom Lorie-Anne Baker, it has sparked “all kinds of goals” for her son, including wanting to help fundraise for other charities and help the homeless in the area too. Those cooler nights are an absolute pleasure. I know I’m probably jinxing our weather, but this past few days have been nice at night forWe’vesleeping.actually been able to turn the A/C off at our place and enjoy the fresh crisp falllikeAsmornings.Igetolder, those hot tem peratures become less tolerable forExceptme. for the week when I had COVID and the chills that came along with it, those hot weeks were very draining and annoying.Itmakes you wonder what people did before air condi tioning.Wait! I was one of those peo ple. That’s right, for the first lucky 13 years of my life, we had no air conditioning. I remember going to my ‘rich aunt’s’ house on Danforth and basking in that new-fangled thing they called central air. Then in 1974, when my par ents made their first home pur chase ever, we moved out of Point Pelee National Park and into the first semi-detached house built in the brand new Cherry Lane subdivision. That house had central air and I was happy for that. Prior to that move, our old place 500 feet south of the Marsh Boardwalk had lots of windows and that was about it. No screens, however, and most of those windows had been painted shut at some point over its previous 60 years of Inexistence.thewinter, the house was heated with an oil powered floor furnace. It really kicked out the heat when you needed it to, but the middle grate — which you could remove to re-light the pi lot light — got very hot so you had to avoid stepping on it. My nephew Jerry did man age to step on it when he was a toddler and burned his foot prettyThatbad.furnace was installed in the mid-to-late ‘60s and I remember when my dad and uncle were cutting the hole in the floor to accommodate it. Prior to that we had an upright oil furnace in the corner of the livingWhenroom.discussing it with my oldest brother the other night, we joked that a highly skilled service technician (our dad) installed that floor furnace in about a day. That was likely long before anything had to be inspected or anyone had to be certified. Back to those summer tem peratures, though. The Point Pelee summers were hot from everything I re call. Our parents possessed an old rickety metal box fan that I spent a lot of time yelling into, long before Darth Vader came along and made that sound fa mous.Itdidn’t really keep the house cool, but once in awhile they would put it into one of the win dows and suck all that hot air into the house. Physics wasn’t my dad’s strong suit. If we wanted to cool down, we always had the lake, al though mom had a 15 minute rule which meant you had 15 minutes from the time you ex ited the front door to the time you came back in or the cav alry would be sent looking for you. That was 15 minutes out the front door, across the busy roadway, up the ¼-mile path through the woods to the beach, get in, get wet, get out and get back. All the while swatting deer flies and horse flies (the park calls them stable flies to not offend the horses) off your wet head and body. After that mini dip, you could find some shade along the back of the yard where the evergreens lined up or go look ing for frogs at the edge of the marsh. That was the routine and you lived with it because that was life before much of the technology and convenience we enjoy today. I can’t imagine any of the younger generation living their lives without any air con ditioning at all. It was sure a unique up bringing and thankfully we had the lake to keep us cool on the really hot days, even if our allotted time for swimming amounted to less than a few short minutes.

In Loving Memory of Judy Harris Who passed away one year ago on August 12, 2021 Sometimes I just sit quietly reflecting for a while, Imagining your voice, your face, your warm and loving smile. For it’s so lovely to recall the happy times we had, When you played such a special role as both wife and mother. At this very special time I only wish you knew, That I’d give the world today for one more hour with you. But I still have my memories and since we’ve been apart, It comforts me so much to know that you’re right here in my heart.

I thought of you with love today but that is nothing new I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name All I have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is my keepsake with which I’ll never part God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart.

By Mark Ribble When Dave and Anna Dyck noticed one of their oak trees had died, Dave decided to cut it down before it fell into their to mato field. The family farm at the corner of County Roads 14 and 31 has become a popular stop along the way for produce and the trees line the roadway there. “Then I thought I’d see if anyone could carve something from what was left,” said Dave. That’s when he reached out and eventually locat ed Rusty Barton of Chain sawed Expressions, who has been work ing on the tree for a couple of weeks now. “I knew I want ed an ear of corn,” said Dave, who’s sweet corn patch is the farm’s signature crop. “We’re happy with what Rusty has been able to do.” Rusty says he’s got about 18 hours into the project already, using a chainsaw to carve it and acryl ics to paint it before finishing it off with a weather-proof coat ing. The carving stands over 10 feet tall and will catch the atten tion of drivingcustomersprospectivewhoarealongCoun ty Road 31. He estimates he’s done 35 other carvings from trees across Essex County. tree Rusty Barton poses with his creation of a giant ear of corn carved from an oak tree. photo

Nettie Friesen, age 94 years, passed from the loving care of her family into the waiting, loving arms of her precious Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, August 11, 2022. She was predeceased by her beloved husband George (1976) and two precious infant grandsons, Nathan James Giesbrecht (1988) and Nicholas Jonathan Giesbrecht (1988). In this life, she was loved and celebrated by her 11 beloved children: Jessie (Ben) Teichroeb, Winkler, MB; Neil Friesen, Lubbock, TX; Tina (John) Driedger, Rosenort, MB; George Friesen, Bowden, AB; Sue (Neil) Wolfe, Kingsville, ON; Abe (Susan) Friesen, Leamington, ON; Pete Friesen, Harrow, ON; John (Alice) Friesen, Ruthven, ON; Helen (Danny) Giesbrecht, Harrow, ON; Jake (Susan) Friesen, Leamington, ON; Dave Friesen, Leamington, ON. She was loved and adored by 48 beloved grandchildren and 44 beloved great-grandchildren. Nettie outlived all of her nine siblings and was recently predeceased by her last living sister, Helena Friesen, on March 3, 2022. She is survived by a very large number of close-knit extended family and friends, including cousins, nieces and nephews who absolutely adored her. Nettie faced death the same way she always faced life, with a deep faith in God and all of His promises and incredible dignity in the midst of pain and hardship. She was born October 12, 1927 in Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, and married George Friesen on December 15, 1946. They celebrated almost 30 years of marriage before George passed away on May 28, 1976. As a young widow of only 48 years of age, she worked tirelessly to love and support her growing family. As the number of in-laws and grandchildren kept increasing, she only increased the labours of love, including baking, cooking, sewing and spending hours of quality time with her grandchildren. But out of all her different interests, she loved embroidering the most. Each of us will cherish every piece she lovingly stitched that we now have as Wekeepsakes.willforever miss the sparkle in her eye, her positive attitude, and the unconditional love that she showered her family with. We are all better because of who she was. Special thanks to Dr. Sheila Horen whose meticulous care and compassion given to Nettie over many years was worth more than words could ever say. Visitation has already taken place at Meadow Brook Church, Leamington. A private family funeral will be held at a later date. As per Nettie’s wishes, cremation has taken place.Ifdesired, memorial donations may be made in Nettie’s memory to Erie Shores Hospice (Hospice Erie Shores Campus).Arrangements entrusted to Cremation First (Leamington) 519-398-9188. It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our mother, Giuseppa “Pina” DiGiorgio, on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the age of 88. Reunited with the love of her life, Onofrio (1992). Much loved and cherished mother of Joe (Rita) and Benny (Lisa). Adored Nonna of Joseph and Jessica, her pride and joy, her “Sanguo Meo”. Dear sister of Marianna (Andrea) and Vitina (Vito) Anselmo, late Nino Pellegrino (late Maria), and sister-inlaw of Antonino DiGiorgio (late Vita) and late Crocifissa Catalano (late Mario). She will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews and extended family. Nothing mattered more in this world to Pina than her family. Her favourite memories in life were cooking everyone’s favourite dish and being surrounded by the ones she loved most. Pina worked at Italia bakery for over 50 years. She was a wonderful baker and people from all over enjoyed her delicious baking. She was a very kind lady and had many friends. Anywhere she went, or if anyone stopped by, always a plate of cookies or something from her garden you’d be sure to receive; basil was her favourite. We want to thank everyone who touched our mom’s life, you all meant the world to her. Visitation will take place at Janisse Funeral Home, 1139 Ouellette Ave. (519-253-5225) on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday, August 18, 2022, from 8:30 a.m. until procession to St. Angela Merici Church (980 Louis Ave) for Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. Entombment to follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery. In kindness, donations in memory of Pina may be made to Erie Shores Hospice. Online condolences and cherished memories may be shared with the family at www.janissefuneralhome.ca

By Greg Coulter The Wheatley Swans and Wheatley Lions Clubs, in partnership with the Wheatley Branch of the Chatham-Kent Pu bic Library, sponsored a very entertaining bub ble show – Bubbleology – on the Wheatley arena floor on August 9. Miss T the Bubble Queen, Canada’s first and may be only “bubbleologist”, put on a dazzling display to a standing room only crowd of over 175 onlook ers for the free show. All guests were treated after the show with freezies supplied by Cayle’s No Frills in Tilbury. Using props designed by Miss T and built with 3-D printers, there was no limit to the size and scope of the bubbles she was able to produce. Jessica Foott, branch head of the library, was extremely grateful for the support of the local ser vice clubs for their assis tance in doing something special for the communi ty after the uncertainty of the Wheatley residents having to deal with last August’s explosion and Covid. The Swans have been very supportive of the community, raising funds by working at the Chanc es Gaming Lounge in Leamington. They an nounced donations in June totaling over $2,200 to the graduation pro grams of East Mersea and Wheatley public schools, Talbot Trail junior golf, Wheatley Fish Fest, Wheatley Food Bank, and The Meadows Social Fund. Bentley Kaiser stands at perfect attention as she is encased in a life-size bubble. Up to five youngsters could be fit into one bubble if they held still long enough and didn’t try to poke it. – SUN photo by Greg Coulter Bubbleology visits Wheatley Arena

David Conklin and his wife, Wilhelmina Fox, date unknown. By C. Scott Holland Like other small Ontario communities during the early 1800s, Leamington was an isolated town until railways began connecting the province and the coun try. Its first railway line has the distinc tion of receiving a federal grant to be built without meeting the required crite ria which was to inter-connect adjoining counties.Oneof the most unique stories sur rounding Sir John A. MacDonald’s railway plan occurred in 1885 when Es sex-South MP Lewis Wigle petitioned the Prime Minister and parliament about funds to build a railway line. At the time, the federal government of fered funds to adjoining counties to build railway lines which it was hoped would lead to the entire country being inter-connected.ThePMwasaware of the long grow ing season in Essex-South, and with such a grant, agricultural commerce from the region would be readily avail able. But Wigle’s proposed line did not go out of Essex County. Nevertheless, a grant of $3,200 per mile was given to the Essex South riding to cover the approxi mate 15-mile railway. The Leamington and Lake St. Clair Railway (later owned by the MCR, New York and Penn Central and CN Railway) had been conceived and was ready for construction in the early 1870s, but did not have the necessary funds to do so. It sat on hold until 1885 when its plans wereStartingrevived.inApril 1887, work began on the new line which would only run as far as Comber and not connect with the neighboring county of Kent, contrary to the government’s guidelines for giving such capital. It became the only railway line to secure federal funds ($50,000) for a venture which cost in $75,000 in total. The foundation for Leamington’s first railway station began in October 1886 and on June 3, 1887 the line’s first iron tracks were laid. The line opened on September 9, 1887 with terminals in place at both Leam ington and 15 miles north at Comber. Surprisingly, both those board and bat ten structures still exist, although today there is no railway line connecting the two.Eventually the railroad would serve the H.J. Heinz Co. and whisk passengers to the splendor of Seacliff Park near the town’s Lake Erie shoreline. During its first 50 year span, the rail road served the region delivering mail, freight and passengers, and formed a connection to the east and west with Grand Trunk Railway. At its peak during WW1, over 100,000 passengers traveled on it yearly. By the late 1930s, its sole purpose was to deliver freight to and from Leaming ton and it remained a primary carrier of materials and products for and by Heinz untilLeamington’s1990. MCR station’s unusu al history, like its current deteriorating condition, is fading. Over 125 years have passed since its opening glory, but its future as a stop ping point along Leamington’s trailway (the former railway line) is in jeopardy. Its history is an important part of our heritage and future generations should take a glimpse at how things were over a century ago. The site has a Heritage Designation and has been owned by the town since 2000 with the Leamington and Mersea Historical Society being its caretakers ‘to oversee any possible renovations.’ Unfortunately the Society has never had the funds to even start such a massive project. During the last decade, the So ciety’s pleas for community support to help save the landmark have drawn little interest. That physical link to the town’s early history and commercial development is living on borrowed time and is now only a memory of its active days.

Following the success ful installation of a con ductor pipe for a pressure relief well, work crews started the same process for the APEC 1 well in the municipal parking lot off Chestnut Street. The conductor pipe is being hammered into the ground and a pressure test of the current well casing was completed, which will guide the en gineers through placing the new pipe around its circumference.Onceinplace, the new pipe will enable the plug ging of APEC 1. The pro cess is estimated to take three weeks. As of August 11, work crews had reached the halfway point in the in stallation of a conductor pipe at the APEC 1 well. Crews also removed the existing well casing, estimated to be between 75 and 100 years old. Once the pipe is fully hammered into position, the new pipe will enable the plugging of APEC 1. As the work continues, an odour of gas may be detected.Ifresidents detect the smell of gas at any time, they are asked to immedi ately call 9-1-1. C-K gives update on Wheatley mitigation efforts

When MacMaster and Leahy married in 2002 — both were already stars in their own right — they could not have predicted their merger would recast what contemporary musical success looks like. All are welcome to attend this free, un-ticketed outdoor event. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and set up on the lawn for the show. Refreshments are available at the Kinsmen Kanteen. The junior golf summer program at Talbot Trail Golf Club in Wheatley has been a great attraction for years. At times, up to 100 golf enthusiasts have participated in the weekly program.OnWednesday, August 10, volunteers were excited to witness a hole-in-one by 12-year-old Brody Brown of Wheatley. The avid golfer, who at times plays up to 27 holes a day, dunked his sand wedge on the seventh hole from 74 yards. Brody, with his first-ever ace, now has more than the combined total of his parents Dale and Tara Brown and his grandpa (lifelong golfer) Jim Omstead. Photo submitted JUNIOR GOLFER GETS HOLE-IN-ONE

By Mark Ribble Wheatley’s Nick Baeini, 17, will be attending St. Clair College this fall where he’ll study electro-mechanical engineering. The Cardinal Carter grad will also be suiting up for the St. Clair College Saints on a football scholarship. Although Nick has been playing both offence and defence for the Essex Ravens, where he just won an Ontario Championship, he’ll concentrate on the corner position with the Saints, who opened their 2022-23 season on Saturday, August 13. The Saints won in a romp over the Quinte Skyhawks by an 82-0 score. Recently, he’s been spending time at Impact Fitness working out with per sonal trainer Andrew George, who is also working with fellow athlete Shan non Harris. Nick is the son of Rod and Kelly Baeini of Wheat ley, and he’s looking for ward to a great season of football. “I put a lot of work into it,” he told the Sun. “It feels good getting noticed.” The Saints — who were known as the Fratmen last season — will be looking to avenge their 15-14 loss to the London Beefeaters last November in the On tario Football Conference championship game.

She’s been com muting to games and practices this season, but doesn’t mind the travel. “It’s been fun playing with differ ent teammates,” she said. The Leamington District Secondary School 2022 grad had put her softball pro file up on a website that allows college coaches to take a look at prospective play ers and she was noticed by the Thomas College coach.“When I took a look at the school, it was perfect because they had the pro gram I was interested in,” sheThatsaid.program is crimi nal justice with a concen tration on forensics. “I went to visit the school in April and my first instinct was that it feels like home,” said Shannon. It’sa 13-hour drive from Wheatley to Water ville, Maine, where the Terriers have their home field. Shannon will leave home on September 1 for a September 3 arrival. “We’re leaving two days early and taking our time,” she said. As for the team she’s joining, it’s a good one. Flyers kick off training camp

By C. Scott Holland The Leamington Flyers kicked off what is hoped to be another successful Jr. B season in the GOJHL as they held their main training camp this past weekend at the Nature Fresh Complex. The camp started out with roughly 60 players and vets who were divided into four teams that played three contests be tween Friday night and all day Saturday. Many of the veteran Flyers includ ing Boe Piroski, Connor McPherson and Ryan McPherson, Gabe Piccolo and Gavin Grundner, were mixed in with a large number of players trying to make the final cut. Six Flyers who are eligible to return did not take part in the weekend’s contests. An extremely high level of talent was evident, with incredible speed, body checking, passing and shooting, while the defensive end reflected solid goal tending plus plenty of digging along the boards and in corners. On Saturday night, the original num ber of players was trimmed down to 46 and split into two squads of 23 players including six goalies. Two games were played on Sunday with a total of 17 six teen-year-olds vying for two spots. The final game was as good as any regular season Jr. B might be and went to over time before it was decided. Anyone who watched that game must have walked away with a sense of Leamington being a stronger contender. Head coach Dale Mitchell said, “It was a great weekend. It was nice to see some competitive hockey again. There were lots of new faces and guys eager to make the team. Many of them played well and got themselves noticed. It will be excit ing to get some practices and exhibition games going.” But as with any season, there is lots of hard work ahead to integrate the rookies with the vets. New routines will be de veloped and learned.

By Mark Ribble After five years of play ing competitive fast-pitch softball, Wheatley’s own Shannon Harris will be donning the uniform of the Thomas College Terri ers come next spring. Shannon, 18, is the daughter of Cindy Harris and the late Robert Harris of Wheatley. She started her baseball career playing slo-pitch and then made the switch to fast-pitch softball (fast ball) when she was 13. She suited up for the Chatham Eagles for four years and spent this past summer playing short stop for the D-1 Nationals out of Woodstock, Ontar io.
