Local Air Cadets place third at marksmanship competition

LEAMINGTON – On Saturday, Feb. 29 the 535 Air Cadet Squadron from Leamington participated in the RSU Cadet Zone 1 Marksmanship Competition in Windsor and earned third place out of 13 teams. Coach CI Goodall and CI Green are very proud of their team as their hard work and determination has paid off. Marksmanship is one of the most popular cadet training activities. Cadet marksmanship had its roots in familiarization training with the Canadian Forces. Its current focus, however, is on teaching cadets the proper use and safe handling of firearms for recreational purposes only. The marksmanship program has been specifically designed for youth and is based on Olympic-style competition. Self-confidence, acceptance of responsibility and sports etiquette are just some of the life skills acquired from the training. A healthy respect for firearms, the development of proficient use of rifles for sport and recreational purposes, and an improvement in self-discipline are additional benefits. Cadets use the Daisy 853C air rifle that fires a .177 calibre pellet and has a round aperture sight. Because of the low muzzle velocity, the Daisy 853C is not classified as a firearm under federal gun legislation. The squadron holds practice once a week at their onsite range.

KINGSVILLE – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged the operator of a farm tractor involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on October 25, 2019 at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Road 7 East in Kingsville. The lone occupant driver of the motor vehicle, a 37-year-old Leamington resident, was transported to an area hospital and pronounced deceased. A 46-year-old Ruthven man is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice Windsor on March 16 to answer to the charge of Careless Driving Causing Death. Road 7 East between North Talbot Road and Graham Side Road was closed for several hours as the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Unit completed the investigation.
