VOLUME TWO | ISSUE TWO
The cover story for our summer edition is the Best of the South Shore Awards (flip to page 42 to see who won in over 205 categories). Congratulations to all of the winners and thank you to the 8,366 people who took the time to vote in our annual reader survey. There could never be a better time to show your support for local businesses in our community. From surfboards and swimwear to music and margaritas, one local business that is filled with the spirit of summer is Levitate in Marshfield. Writer Jennifer McInerney had a chance to chat with owners Dan and Jessica Hassett for the article “Homegrown Stoke,” which showcases the evolution of their laid-back lifestyle brand. This issue also features a profile of actors Chris and Marianne Cooper. The Kingston residents talk about their journey as a couple, and as parents, and reflect on Chris’ recent Hollywood films (catch Chris Cooper’s performance in “Irresistible,” due out later this summer). If you’ve driven through Hull recently, you’ve probably spotted a series of new vibrant murals. Writer Kate Rogan’s article “Bringing Beauty to the Beach” highlights the artists behind this fantastic example of public art that has transformed a neglected section of Nantasket Avenue with vibrant colors.. If you’re spending more time at home these days, it might be a good opportunity to consider redecorating. Writer Noelle Barbosa’s article “Powerfully Petite” reveals how local interior designers haverevamped powder rooms with bold colors and patterns. This issue also features ice cream hot spots (congrats to Dairy Twist, featured on our cover), summer beach reads and profiles of “Hometown Heroes.” If the world seems upside down right now, I hope this issue brings you a renewed sense of positivity, peace and hope. We will get through this together. Enjoy the sunshine!

Now more than ever, we are experiencing so much more comfort, more security and more a sense of refuge than ever before from our homes. Home has never been more important. Essence of New England BY MARIA ALLEN
Living near the base of the Blue Hills in Milton, perfumer Sandy Carr has always had an appreciation for the natural beauty found in New England. After many explorations of the verdant wooded trails near her home, as well as bloomfilled city gardens and sandy beaches on the South Shore, she set out to create a line of scents inspired by the mood and magic of these locales. “A fragrance can whisk you away to other times and places. It can provide a brief escape by calling up a special memory,” says Carr, who launched Bluehill Fragrances last fall. Her debut collection includes three dynamic perfumes: Metrogarden, an homage to Boston’s majestic public garden; Back Bay, a fresh, “green” scent with just a hint of earth and ocean air; and Beach Rose, a honeyed floral scent infused with the essence of wild beach roses, nurtured by sun and salty ocean breezes. From the time she was a child, Carr has been inspired by her natural surroundings and attracted to the sensory

Carr started out by taking several perfume courses in New York City and reading every book she could find on fragrance. HEROES
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused hardship for people around the world, including here on the South Shore, but it is heartwarming to know that there are individuals and organizations working tirelessly to help our community rise and thrive during this difficult time. We recently teamed up with the South Shore Chamber of Commerce to recognize some of these people. We asked our readers to nominate and vote for inspiring South Shore residents making a difference. Here are the top five reader-selected Hometown Heroes, in no particular order. We are continuing our Hometown Heroes coverage on our website. To nominate an inspiring person in your community, visit southshorehomelifeandstyle.com.
Mike and Kellene Falco FOUNDERS OF SANTA’S HELPERS Pembroke residents Mike and Kellene Falco are the founders of Santa’s Helpers, a local nonprofit that collects and distributes funds and gifts to South Shore children and families in need. What started as a holiday season fundraiser, is now a year-round enterprise serving residents of Pembroke, Quincy, Braintree and Weymouth. Working together with local school districts and funded by the generosity of an extensive network of friends and neighbors, Santa’s Helpers organizes toy drives, contributes to local food banks and sends checks and gift cards to people experiencing financial hardship. All of the money raised benefits families in need. Most recently, Santa’s Helpers held a virtual fundraiser and raised $14,000 to benefit healthcare workers, first responders and families impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. South Shore Hospital’s Birthing Unit Despite the many ways COVID-19 has turned life upside down, one of the universal and timeless treasures the virus cannot stop is childbirth. Every mother deserves the best birth experience possible and the steady compassion given by the team in the labor and delivery unit at South Shore Hospital is nothing short of inspirational. The forged bonds between clinicians and families have not wavered during this unprecedented time, while the team continues to ensure a smooth, safe, and beautiful experience for each family to welcome their new baby into the world. “We are all here for families, no matter how protocols have changed,” says Kim Dever, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at South Shore Health. “Having a baby now might be more anxiety-producing than a few months ago, but we always help every one of our patients have the safest and best birth possible.” Southshorehealth.org
Bernadette Ward VP OF CLINICAL OPERATIONS AT NVNA AND HOSPICE A Scituate native and mom of three, Bernadette Ward is helping to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in 27 towns across the South Shore. At NVNA and Hospice, she leads a clinical team of nurses, therapists and aides who practice home care and utilize telehealth to keep vulnerable, elderly patients safe and out of the hospital. She has been working 24/7 to make sure that her team understands the ever-changing CDC and MassDPH guidelines, has access to personal protective equipment, and are encouraged, determined and calm during this unprecedented time. She, NVNA CEO Renee McInnes, and the rest of the team are keeping patients and staff safe and slowing the spread of COVID-19. Rick Doane EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT INTERFAITH SOCIAL SERVICES A beacon of positivity and hope for people in need, Rick Doane is the executive director at Interfaith Social Services, a Quincy-based nonprofit dedicated to serving South Shore residents through food relief, mental health services and emergency assistance programs. During the COVID-19 crisis, the local charity saw a dramatic uptick in the number of people coming for help. Many of these people were underemployed and struggling to pay the bills and some were waiting for Federal aid to come through. Doane and dedicated volunteers spent long hours JACK FOLEY
working to keep up with demand by manning the food pantry, which serves residents of Braintree, Cohasset, Hingham, Holbrook, Hull, Milton, Quincy, Randolph, Scituate and Weymouth. For information, visit Interfaithsocialservices.org.

When the COVID-19 crisis began to escalate on the South Shore, Reed knew that he wanted to find a way to give back. He decided to begin offering “pay-it-forward meal options. Customers purchase home-cooked comfort foods to be donated to homebound neighbors, first responders and healthcare workers. All meals come with a personal note from the donor. So far, Reed and his family have prepared and delivered over 1,500 meals and he plans to continue the program as long as he is able to. To learn more or to donate DERRICK ZELLMANN

A Healthy Perspective 10 tips for living your best life in an upside-down world BY MARIA ALLEN
During times of elevated stress, it is easy for basic elements of wellness—healthy eating, exercise and sleep—to fall through the cracks. This is certainly true during a global pandemic. Whether you spent the last couple months socially isolating, attempting to homeschool your kids while working from home, or serving the community as a healthcare professional or another essential worker, everyone could do with a little self-care right about now. We reached out to Sheryl Melanson, founder of Coastal Coaching and author of the new book, “Perspective: Harness the Power of Your Mind to Reignite Your Spirit” and asked her to share a few tips for promoting resiliency and regaining a sense of balance during challenging times. “We all experience a broad spectrum of stress. This year, however, has felt like a tsunami of upheaval,” says Melanson. “I have watched friends, family, and clients become overpowered by the weight and uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many have allowed healthy choices and routines to become displaced and disrupted. Less healthy coping tools like alcohol and other substances, comfort foods and emotional eating, news cycle distress, and even apathy are resurging because it’s harder to care for ourselves during times of survival. Our primitive instincts kick in, convincing us that we need to indulge to endure. In order to have the capacity to shift into a healthy perspective, we must first meet our basic needs. Without a regular rhythm of well-being and reboot habits, harnessing the power of our minds to survive and thrive is much more challenging.”

The Oyster Bag The ultimate summertime tote has arrived, thanks to the ingenuity of oyster farmer Brooke Lovett, manager of Rocky Nook Oyster Farm in Kingston. Made from durable aquaculture materials, The Oyster Bag is both stylish and sustainable. “Everything that goes into making the bags is used on our farm, from the mesh we use for our baby oyster cages to the hooks and rope,” says Lovett, who has been making handbags off and on for 20 years. “It occurred to me that we grow our oysters in bags and there had to be a way to take a material that can withstand years of New England winters and turn it into an everyday bag.” After a lot of cutting, bending and splicing materials together, Lovett landed on a design. The Oyster Bag was officially launched in February and is available in three sizes: The Petite, The Market and The Jumbo. The bags are designed to appeal to everyone from active moms on the go to young professionals. “I wanted to make a bag that I would use every day,” says Lovett. “I tried to keep it as classic as possible.” Depending on the size, The Oyster Bag can function as a handbag or a durable beach bag, perfect for carrying towels, flip flops and even sand toys (they are 100 percent washable and weight-tested up to 45 pounds). The Oyster Bag can be purchased locally at Strand in Duxbury and Wish Gift Co. in Sandwich, and online at theoysterbag.com. — Maria Allen

PILGRIM TRAIL
It’s funny how it all came full circle. When the Pilgrims made their 1620 voyage aboard the Mayflower, their journey was a pilgrimage to find a new home, a place that would allow them to practice their beliefs in the manner that they chose. Four hundred years later, we are the pilgrims, returning to the same stretch of shoreline to learn more about the people, places and events that significantly Written by JOHN GA LLUZZO Photography by

influenced the founding of America. Here is a list of 20 significant landmarks, historic homes and museums located in Plymouth and further afield (from just south of Boston to the tip of Cape Cod) that help tell the Pilgrim story.
Plimoth Plantation 137 Warren Avenue, Plymouth 508-746-1622, plimoth.org
The story told at Plimoth Plantation is a tale of two distinct cultures—that of the 17th-century English villagers and the native Wampanoag people. Inside the humble cottages in the English Village, costumed role players represent members of the Plymouth colony and converse with visitors as they go about their daily tasks. Nearby, the staff at the Wampanoag Homesite, most of whom are native people, proudly explain how their ancestors once lived, from planting, fishing and cooking to making crafts and mishoons (wooden canoes). With an onsite gift shop, cafe and cinema inside the main visitor center, Plimoth Plantation is easily worth a full day on your Plymouth vacation agenda.

Mayflower II State Pier, Water Street, Plymouth 508-746-1622, plimoth.org
Plimoth Plantation’s full-scale reproduction of the tall ship that brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth in 1620 recently received a full restoration and is scheduled to be back in Plymouth Harbor in 2020. The Mayflower story is told up on deck and in berths and holds. Visitors imagine what the journey would have been like for the Pilgrims, sleeping in cramped quarters on the rolling sea and anticipating their new life. Plymouth Rock can be seen from the ship, and is worth a

visit as well.
The Plimoth Grist Mill 6 Spring Lane, Plymouth 508-830-1124, plimoth.org
A water-powered corn grinding mill was constructed on Town Brook in 1636. Colonist John Jenney oversaw the operation of the mill—an exhibit of Plimoth Plantation— and his pay was a portion of the cornmeal he ground. Today’s reproduction mill is within walking distance of the waterfront and across the street from Burial Hill. On days when the staff is milling corn, guests can watch the water wheel spin and see 200-year-old French Buhr millstones produce delicious, organic cornmeal (available for purchase in the shop).
Harlow Old Fort House 119 Sandwich St., Plymouth 508-746-0012, harlowfamily.com
In 1621, the Pilgrims built a simple defense fort atop a hill that allowed for views of any vessels approaching the harbor. In 1677, after the end of King Philip’s War, Sergeant William Harlow took the timbers from the fort and built this house. Tours and educational programs are offered seasonally.

Pilgrim Hall Museum 75 Court St., Plymouth 508-746-1620, pilgrimhall.org
Opened in 1824, Pilgrim Hall Museum is the nation’s oldest continuously operating public museum. It boasts an amazing collection of Pilgrim-specific artifacts, from Myles Standish’s sword to Peregrine White’s cradle. The museum also tells the story of the Wampanoag, the “People of the Dawn,” who lived in the region
Jabez Howland House 33 Sandwich St., Plymouth 508-746-9590, pilgrimjohnhowlandsociety.org
Jabez, son of Pilgrims John and Elizabeth, lived in this house until 1680. It remained a private residence until 1912, when it became a museum. Extensive refurbishing in the 1940s turned

it into what it is today, a beautiful representation of early colonial American life.
Mayflower House Museum 4 Winslow St., Plymouth 508-746-2590 themayflowersociety.org
The General Society of Mayflower Descendants maintains this lovely Victorian manse built by the great-grandson of Pilgrim Edward Winslow. Visitors learn about the many influential Plymouth families who lived in the home as well as other interesting historical facts. Tours are held seasonally.

National Monument to the Forefathers Allerton St., Plymouth
Believed to be the largest solid granite monument in the world, this monument personifies the ideals of the Pilgrims and was dedicated in 1889. Atop the main pedestal stands the heroic figure of “Faith, with her right hand pointing toward heaven and her left hand clutching the Bible.

Cole’s Hill and Burial Hill Carver Street and School St., Plymouth
Burial Hill is situated at the site of the first fort built by the Pilgrims. Dedicated in 1637, it commands unparalleled views of Plymouth Harbor. Cole’s Hill burying ground is down at the base of the first settlement, on Leyden Street. It is the final resting place of the settlers who

died during the winter of 1620-21.
Built in 1714, Major John Bradford’s house was the site of a fascinating and revealing archaeological dig in the 1970s. The house stands above the Jones River, named for Master
Major John Bradford Homestead 50 Landing Road, Kingston 774-454-4699, jrvhs.org
Christopher Jones, captain of the Mayflower, and is well-known for its Sunday summer breakfast series, expansive garden and docent-led tours.
Howland Homestead Howlands Lane, Kingston
The Pilgrims sent out multiple exploring parties before settling on their primary settlement site. One group, which included John Howland, headed north along the coast and “found a creek and went up three English miles.” The site looked good, grounds, too wild to feel fully safe in the earliest days. Markers tell the story of the Howland family’s residence, located here from 1638 to 1673.

Alden House Historic Site 105 Alden St., Duxbury 781-934-9092, alden.org
The story of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins is one of romance, lauded in both prose and poetry. Passengers on the Mayflower, they married in 1622, and in 1627 moved to what is now Duxbury. The land has never left the Alden family and guests can tour the circa-1680 home.
Myles Standish Homesite Mayflower Lane, Duxbury
Here stood the home of Myles and Barbara Standish, the former of which was the military leader of the Plymouth colony. With magnificent views of Cape Cod Bay, this house site is marked by corner posts and a front doorstep in supposedly accurate positions based on discovery projects from as far back as the 1820s.
Myles Standish Monument Crescent St., Duxbury
Dedicated in 1898, this monument stands in memory of Massachusetts’ citizen soldiers and the military leader of the Plymouth colony (whose burial site on Chestnut Street is also a Duxbury landmark). It’s a somewhat steep walk to the monument site atop Captain’s Hill, but worth the hike.

Pilgrim Spring and Corn Hill Pilgrim Heights Road, and Corn Hill Lane, Truro
It was at Pilgrim Spring, near Head of the Meadow Beach, that the Pilgrims took their first taste of fresh water in New England. A short trail leads to a marker that commemorates the Pilgrim’s initial exploration of this area. Corn Hill tells a slightly more sordid tale. It is said to be the site where the Pilgrims pulled a store of corn from a buried Native American stash before moving on to Plymouth.

President Theodore Roosevelt spoke at the cornerstone laying for the Pilgrim Monument in 1907 and President William Howard Taft led the dedication in 1910. It was in Provincetown that the Pilgrims first came ashore after their arduous journey across the sea. Climb the monument and visit the museum, which expands upon the Pilgrim story.

Winslow House Museum 634 Careswell St., Marshfield 781-837-5753, winslowhouse.org
The land on which the Isaac Winslow House sits was granted to the family in the 1630s and the current house was constructed around 1699. It was named after a governor of Plymouth colony who was a grandson of Mayflower passenger Edward Winslow. It has the separate distinction of also having been owned by Daniel Webster and later his son Fletcher, the other giants of Marshfield history. The house hosts educational programs throughout the year, culminating each fall with a traditional buffet style turkey dinner.

SUMMER 2020 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
Written by DAV E KINDY
Photography by DER R ICK ZELLM A NN Chris Cooper and Marianne Leone are sitting around the kitchen table drinking coffee and eating homemade cranberry bread. The conversation is pleasant and lighthearted as they banter back and forth about acting, writing, and life on the South Shore. The talk turns to Cooper’s latest movie, “Irresistible.” He tells a story about how co-star Steve Carell and director/writer Jon Stewart were trading jabs and one-liners between takes of the political comedy, shot last year in Georgia. The Academy Award-winning actor is asked if he joined in with the comedic repartee. “I know better than that,” he says. “I learned that from being with Marianne and her writer friends early in our relationship. They would be writing sketch comedy and I would try to interject stuff and it would fall so flat. Nope. Not going there!” Leone tries to stifle a laugh. “It’s so true,” she says with a broad smile. There is an easy give-and-take to their relationship. Both are stars in their own right; they might even be called the ultimate Hollywood power couple – if they lived in Hollywood. When they’re not on the road for work, the couple lives in Kingston, on a quiet lane overlooking a serene marsh, which has been their home since 1994.

CHRIS COOPER
Cooper is more reserved and contemplative than his wife. He measures his words and talks softly about his career and his growth as an actor. He is glib as he remembers anecdotes and tells stories about the people he has worked with, though his delivery is soft and gentle – much like his nature. He is the straight man to Leone, who is more effusive and lively. She is the yin to his yang. Opposites attract, they say. Words seem to tumble from her mouth as the thoughts come to her mind. Leone, who is also a recognizable actor as well as an author and playwright, is expressive and energetic – and doesn’t hold back with her feelings. “Chris passes on plenty of scripts,” she states, in no uncertain terms. “I’m the first line. That’s what most people don’t realize. I read them first.” Born of love and steeled by tragedy, the duo makes their marriage work. It hasn’t been easy, though. The traveling for work and demands on time because of their crafts means separation and distance for weeks at a time, but they have managed it successfully for 36 years. The misfortune that cements their relationship is the shared pain of losing a child. Jesse Cooper, who died from an epileptic seizure at age 18 in 2005, was the focal point of their lives. He still is. Inside the house, framed photos of Jesse with his mother and father are everywhere. Standing on an easel next to the dining room table is a striking painting of Jesse as a young child with two angel wings protruding from his back.
70

“Jesse was just a baby when we had that done,” says Leone. “The woman who did this portrait painted him a few years older. She even showed him with his disability.” Jesse was born three months early in 1987 and suffered a brain hemorrhage. He developed cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair because of his restricted mobility. The Coopers’ hearts were filled with compassion for their son. They helped him overcome his boundaries and excel at life and learning. Jesse would eventually thrive at Silver Lake Regional High School, making the honor roll. Love for their son is what brought Cooper and Leone to their modest but comfortable home in Kingston. At the time of Jesse’s birth, they lived in the New York City area but wanted to move to a place that would provide better opportunities for their child. Leone, who grew up in Newton, spent summers in Kingston visiting her aunt and uncle, Ellie and Benny Iannucci, who owned Kingston Block Co. The quiet South Shore town seemed a perfect fit for their family. “We were familiar with this area,” says Cooper. “We’d travel here on car trips, spend time with her aunt and uncle, and we started looking at real estate. My thing was, if I am going to move all the way to Massachusetts from New York, I want to be within walking distance of water. This house came along and I said, ‘this works for me.’”

From surfboards and custom swimwear to music festivals and Mexicali cuisine, Dan and Jessica Hassett have built Levitate into a laid-back lifestyle brand that screams summer. www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

here’s a distinctive flow—much like a crested wave rolling to shore—that connects the Levitate surf and skate shop with SlackTide Coffee Roasters, the Levitate Surf Cantina and the Backyard. And it’s entirely by design. “The flow was intentional for us. We wanted people to be able to walk around the shop, get a taco, and go listen to live music all in one place,” says co-owner Jessica Hassett. In designing their collection of shops on the corner of Ocean and Webster Streets in Marshfield Center, she and her husband, Dan, sought to recreate the quintessential après-surf experience that they’ve enjoyed during their travels. “In Puerto Rico, there’s a place called Jack’s Shack that serves the most amazing fish tacos. And we thought, ‘Why can’t we have something like this in Marshfield?’” The combination of these complementary parts of their business has made Levitate a popular destination—not just for surfers and skaters, but for anyone looking to unwind after a day of work or fun in the sun. Last year, the Hassetts added the Backyard, an open-air live music venue that fulfilled a vital piece of their vision for the Levitate brand. “Music has always been a passion for us,” says Jessica. The annual Levitate Music and Arts Festival (canceled this year due to the COVID-19 virus and rescheduled for July, 2021) attracts thousands of music lovers to the Marshfield Fairgrounds each summer. While the festival helped put the brand’s name fully in the spotlight, the Backyard offers a more intimate atmosphere. Last summer, the Backyard hosted 10 sold-out shows featuring local bands, such as Chadwick Stokes and The Pintos, Citizen Cope, and The Elovaters.

SUMMER 2020 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
Sporting the Levitate Lifestyle Jessica, who studied art at New York City University School of Visual Arts and received a degree from the University of Massachusetts, heads up Levitate’s clothing design team. About five years ago, she taught herself the technical skills to produce designs for garments, beginning with printed sweatshirts and T-shirts, and launching a signature flannel shirt. “Dan and I are both outdoorsy and adventurous and we want to wear clothing that’s durable and fits well, not frumpy,” she says. Each year, under her direction, Levitate releases a new fall collection and a new spring/summer line of sportswear, swimwear, and even surfboards and paddleboards. The colorful and casual Cantina shirts have become a fast favorite among shoppers, inspiring a scaled-down toddler version. All of the made-in-the-USA designs are intended to be comfortable and are now being created from renewable resources and/or recycled materials, such as organic cotton and recycled polyester. “Our customers really care about renewable

two of which are exactly alike. For the summer, a variety of custom swimwear styles will be available, including board shorts for men, and bikinis in solids and prints in a range of styles to accommodate different body types. “Skimpy is really in right now, but not every woman is comfortable in it, so we have styles for curvier women as well,” says Jessica.

Summertime Sensations The original Levitate shop location, owned by the late Bob Pollard and Amelia English, opened across the street, above Haymarket South. Dan Hassett, who worked with Pollard, purchased the shop in 2008 and reopened at its current location next to the “Uncle Bud” skate park in Marshfield. While Levitate is not situated directly on the beach, its central downtown location makes it a convenient stop for water sport enthusiasts looking to rent or purchase surfboards or stand-up paddleboards along the way to many of the town’s beaches, including Rexhame, Fieldston, Ocean Bluff, Brant Rock and Green Harbor. The shop offers surfing camps for kids ages 7 through 15 throughout the summer season at Rexhame Beach, near Beadle’s Rocks, a popular place to catch waves. Levitate also operates a second shop located on Straight Wharf on Nantucket. This summer, Levitate is adding a Creative Camp, for kids ages 5 to 10, with a focus on music and the arts. The fourday sessions will teach kids to incorporate nature and recycled materials into artwork and handmade instruments and will include visits to nearby trails to explore local ecosystems and daily yoga, music jams and sing-alongs. The parents to 3- and 5-year-old daughters (with a third child on the way), Jessica and Dan have grown up along with their brand. Thanks to their trusted team members who help manage retail operations and festival planning, the Hassetts are able to focus more of their time on generating new creative concepts to keep the Levitate brand relevant and refreshing. As Levitate fans are well aware, it’s all about bringing people together, spreading love and creating lasting memories.

Robinson, a 36-year-old artist with a Fine Arts degree, was thrilled to be part of the effort and was eager to dive into a creative project that focused on community building. The “placemaking” project began in February of 2019 when the town of Hull and Paragon Entertainment Ventures released an open call for local artists to paint murals for an outdoor gallery called “Walls on the Water, Hull’s Art Walk.” The goal was to revitalize a neglected pedestrian pathway that connects Nantasket Beach to Steamboat Wharf. The plan included vibrant murals, as well as other public art pieces along the path to encourage foot traffic, boost local business opportunities and harness community spirit. Robinson was one of 12 artists from across Boston’s South Shore worked on the project. While Robinson’s mural adorns the walls of the Dalat building, other artists created murals on square wooden pallets measuring 8 and 16 feet high that were designed to be displayed along the pathway. The project was managed by Amanda Hill and overseen by Constable. “We had the chance to do a market feasibility study at the beginning of the project and it showed that Hull had a very high rate of art and culture,” says Constable. “That’s who we are as a community in so many ways and we knew this project would make the artistic community feel that much more supported.”

The project was finally revealed at a community celebration in September. Artists, students and area residents mingled along the art path while music played and food was served. “I was so thankful for the support the project generated and the foot traffic it brought in,” says Constable, who hopes to expand the project in the future. “Part three,” as she calls it, will include a public skatepark, community area and more art. “It was nice to see this neglected part of town come back to life,” says Robinson, who has fond memories of traveling to Nantasket Beach as a teenager and grabbing a slice at Joseph’s pizza. From ships and sea creatures to mermaids and a magnificent carousel horse, the Hull ArtWalk pays homage to the town’s rich history and coastal identity. It is a fantastic example of the power of public art, amplifying the town’s creative energy by bringing beauty to the beach.

Under the Sea This Cohasset powder room designed by Anne Nelson of Anne Nelson Interior Design is anything but ordinary. Enchanting oceanthemed wallpaper served as a bold alternative to the neutral colors in other parts of the home. “It’s like you’re under the water with the jellyfish,” says Nelson, describing the Thibaut wallcovering, which was also applied to the electric switch plates to create a flush look. The coral and turquoise color scheme is accentuated by elegant antique brass fixtures. “Antique brass matches beautifully with so many colors,” says Nelson, who graduated from Rhode Island School of Design and has

5 Powder Room Design Tips With the powder room being one of the smallest spaces in your home, it’s ideal for experimentation. Throw caution to the wind and create a knockout nook that you and your guests will love. Danielle Jones, vice president of business development at Snow and Jones in Norwell, shares five tips for designing the perfect powder room. SINKS THAT INSPIRE The powder room is a great place to incorporate a decorative sink. Consider different materials, such as glass or stone to provide added texture. COOL COLOR SCHEME Wallpaper can add depth in your powder room. With lower moisture in this room, it’s a perfect opportunity to experiment with beautiful patterns and colors. EXPOSED PIPING Talk to your plumber about any specialty plumbing needs. If you’re doing a decorative finish on exposed pipes, you’ll want to order those early as some items will have an eight-week lead. FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT Consider who will be using the space. A wall-mounted faucet and vessel sink may be beautiful in pictures, but it may not be practical if the bathroom will be used frequently by small children who

can’t reach the faucet. CREATIVE STORAGE If you’re adding a pedestal or console sink, you may need a spot to store extra hand towels or toilet paper. A hotelier shelf, stacked toilet paper holder, baskets under a console or wooden shelving can offer additional storage.
www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com
This powder room was designed by Becky Carbone of Farmhouse Fresh Interiors in Norwell as part of a larger home renovation. “We knew we wanted the Kohler Brockway sink as the statement piece and my client loves buffalo gingham,” says Carbone. “We had done some navy buffalo gingham stools by Caitlin Wilson for her kitchen island and we wanted to mimic the look in the wallpaper above the chair rail.” She found a body shop in Rockland to “powder coat” the sink base navy to match the wallpaper swatch.

favorite local restaurants. Vanessa Moore, owner of Moore Media, Inc., already had experience in book production and graphic design. Louisa Clerici, co-director of the corporate sleep wellness business Clear Mind Systems, was a passionate foodie with a skill for writing. Together, the two women set out to create a cookbook celebrating America’s hometown. Moore and Clerici worked with local restaurant owners and chefs to compile recipes and write restaurant profiles for the cookbook. This was not a simple task, given that few of the chefs used written recipes and many were accustomed to preparing portions to feed a crowd. Seven months later, in October, 2018, the first edition of “The Plymouth Cookbook” was published. Encouraged by the cookbook’s popularity in the local community, the two friends recently set out to create a 2020 edition. The new version of “The Plymouth Cookbook, Recipes from America’s Hometown,” will

readers an inside look at the exciting dishes on their menus,” says Clerici. “We have restaurants in Plymouth that not only create delicious food but have delightful histories. It was a pleasure to write their stories and I feel proud of what Vanessa and I have created.” For Moore, the most enjoyable part of producing the cookbooks has been getting to know all the restaurant owners, chefs, and staff, and being able to provide them with a product that recognizes their hard work. “And, of course, getting to work with Louisa, who has become a very close friend.” says Moore. To learn more about The Plymouth Cookbook and for details purchasing a cookbook, follow Foodie Federation on Facebook. The following is a sampling of recipes from “The Plymouth Cookbook: Recipes from America’s Hometown” with restaurant bios by Louisa Clerici.

CABBYSHACK
Crab Cakes INGREDIENTS 1 pound jumbo lump crab 8 ounces panko bread crumbs 3 cups mayonnaise 1/4 cup capers 1 cup Dijon mustard (French’s® brand, if possible) 1 ounce fresh parsley, chopped 2 eggs 1 tablespoon McCormick’s Old Bay® Seasoning 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
INSTRUCTIONS 1 Preheat the oven to 400°. 2 In a bowl, mix all ingredients except the crab. 3 Add crab to the mixture, and gently mix so as to not break up the crab chunks too much. 4 With a #10-size scooper or a large spoon, scoop out about 1/2 cup each per crab cake, and set aside on a large plate. 5 Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, quickly sear the crab cakes on one side, then flip and sear on the other, in order to achieve a golden brown. Place seared cakes on a cooking sheet and bake at 400° for 9 minutes.

11 Hot Spots to enjoy cool treats on the South Shore BY GABRIELLE MARTIN
B’s Ice Cream, located in the Webster Square Shopping Center in Marshfield, is the brainchild of owner Brooke Costa. B’s was launched in 2019 with the goal of providing premium homemade ice cream to the South Shore. All of their ice cream is made onsite using fresh ingredients and Costa is committed to using local products and produce whenever possible. The menu features a few traditional favorites as well as a rotating list of unique flavors, such as Honey Lavender or Cereal Milk Toffee. Some of the shop’s most popular scoops include Cookie Butter Crunch, made with Speculoos Cookie Butter, or their rich and decadent Chocolate. In addition to offering sundaes, frappes and fun just-for-kids menu items (such as their Unicorn and Dirt Sundae), B’s also offers ice cream pies. 57 Snow Road, Marshfield, 781-922-4062, Bhomemade.com
Cream The Abington-based ice cream shop Cream is the creation of husband-and-wife duo Craig Perry and Lenora Cushing, who pride themselves on providing top-notch ice cream, sauces and toppings for their customers in plentiful portions. Cushing says, “We have tried to make Cream a destination ice cream shop, bringing delicious ice cream combinations from places we have visited and memories from our childhoods.” They make an extra effort to source products and ingredients locally, including Richardson’s Ice Cream, from Middleton, Thatcher Milk Farm, a fifth-generation dairy delivery service in Milton and Mama B’s Tasty Treats in Rockland. They’ve also partnered with a talented pastry chef Phillip Caramello from Plymouth, who provides Cream with their Belgian Dark Couverture Chocolate Cakes that form the basis of their specialty sundae “Peanut Butter After Dark.” Caramello also supplies the shop with frozen cookie dough, which customers can buy to bake at home. 1209 Bedford St., Abington, 781-982-9400, creamabington.com

Farfar’s Danish Ice Cream
Farfar’s Danish Ice Cream Shop Nestled between a gas station and a bakery in downtown Duxbury, the gray-shingled storefront of Farfar’s Danish Ice Cream Shop stands out from beneath a covering of lush green leaves. Named after owner Andra Carleton’s first-generation Danish-American immigrant father, Walter Simonsen (the word “farfar” is actually Danish for “grandfather”), the shop opened its doors on June 16, 1979. Ice cream continues to be made fresh every day using family recipes. You can never go wrong with a scoop (or two) of one of their three most popular flavors: Oreo, chocolate chip cookie dough, or velvety, vanilla Danish Sweet Cream. 272 St. George St., Duxbury, 781-934-5152, farfarsicecream.com
Gelato & Chill
Gelato & Chill NEW! Authentic Italian gelato is hard to find in New England, but the newly opened Gelato & Chill at Derby Street Shops in Hingham is changing all of that. After living and working in Italy for several years, Vincent Turco became obsessed with uncovering the secrets of the country’s artisanal gelato makers. Turco returned to Massachusetts where he set out to turn his passion into a business. After testing out his products at a few Boston kiosks, the Hingham resident opened his first major brick and mortar location in Hingham earlier this year (you can also find Gelato & Chill at Time Out Market in Boston). Specializing in small-batch handmade gelato and sorbet inspired by award-winning Italian recipes, Gelato & Chill uses only the highest quality natural ingredients, including fresh milk and cream from Massachusetts dairies, and prestigious imported ingredients like Valrhona chocolate from France, pistachios from Sicily, hazelnuts from Piemonte, Italy, and vanilla beans from Madagascar. Favorite gelato flavors include stracciatella and tiramisu. An assortment of refreshing sorbets are also served, made from fresh, seasonal fruits. 92 Derby St., Suite 117, Hingham, 617-717-4989, gelatochill.com
JJ’s Dairy Hut
Hornstra Farm Store & Dairy Bar
Since 1956, JJ’s Dairy Hut has been a popular roadside attraction perfect for the on-the-go ice cream lover. JJ’s offers an array of hard-scooped flavors from Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream. However, the real draw at JJ’s, aside from their nostalgic aesthetic, is their signature soft serve. The ice cream is ultra-creamy and best served covered in a layer of their trademark Krunch Kote, a combination of rainbow sprinkles and peanut brittle. Whatever size you get, rest assured, they never skimp on the portions (or toppings). You could also treat yourself to one of their frappes (the New Englander’s milkshake). We also love that JJ’s is dogfriendly, offering a frosty “Doggie Dish” for furry friends. 140 Chief Justice Cushing Highway, Cohasset, 781-383-0020, facebook.com/jjsdairyhut
Hornstra Farms has been family owned and operated for over 100 years, delivering the freshest and finest quality milk, cream, and farm-fresh products to families across the South Shore. The Hornstra Farms seasonal Dairy Bar features a wide selection of handcrafted ice cream made with Grade-A quality milk, with minimal pasteurization.
