Choose Joy

illy Wonka has nothing on the candy-colored wallpaper featured on the cover of our annual home design and decor issue. Captured by architectural photographer Brian Doherty, the image was taken inside the kitchen at The Salty Daughter, a newly renovated beach bungalow in Hull that was lovingly decorated by owner Emily Copeman and her mother, artist Pamela Copeman. Writer Kelly Chase’s story, “Retro Reno,” reveals how this dynamic duo used bold colors and patterns to infuse the home with a fun, family-friendly vibe.

Another fantastic Hull property is showcased in writer Jen McInerney’s story, “Crowning Glory.” The view from the “Eagle’s Nest” of this newly constructed single-family home takes full advantage of the sweeping water views in nearly all directions. Since there are few things more relaxing than gazing out at the ocean, we’ve also included a photo essay, titled “Beautiful Horizons,” which features a selection of tranquil seascapes by fine art photographer Kat Hanafin. Our spring issue also showcases the work of local watercolor artist Dayna Hartford, who recently began turning her paintings of South Shore landmarks and historical buildings into delicate toile patterns, which she prints on wallpaper, fabrics, mugs, pillows and more.

With the arrival of warmer spring temperatures, it’s the perfect time to revamp your wardrobe. Laura DeSisto’s story, “Fashion School,” shines a light on up-and-coming Hingham designer Nina Pimenta, who recently launched a new gorgeous clothing collection at Boston Fashion Week. For our story, Pimenta spent an afternoon styling local fashion influencer Amy Hendy, and provided helpful tips for shopping your closet.

When it comes to fashionable spring events, it’s hard to top the pomp and circumstance of The Kentucky Derby. Photographer Kjeld Mahoney and I recently had the privilege of visiting the workshop of Norwell milliner Jaine Davies, whose gorgeous handmade cocktail hats bring joy to everyone who wears them.

Last, but certainly not least, writer David Kindy penned a fascinating profile of Jesse Cole, owner of the Savannah Bananas baseball team and author of the book “Banana Ball.” A Scituate native, Cole has been bringing joy to the masses by turning baseball into an over-the-top entertainment experience. If you’re looking for something fun to do, check our calendar for great arts and entertainment events for the whole family. We have big plans for summer, so be sure to follow us on Instagram @southshorehls and Facebook @southshorehomelifestyle to stay updated.

Enjoy!

Beyond Botox

A beginner’s guide to non-invasive aesthetics procedures designed to improve your complexion and boost your confidence.

Just as sunny days and warming temperatures inspire people to spruce up their homes and wardrobes, spring is also a great time of year to treat yourself to a rejuvenating skin treatment. While Botox and fillers continue to be popular, they aren’t the only option. In fact, there are numerous nonsurgical procedures currently on the market that can help reduce the signs of aging. We chatted with the knowledgeable staff at Gentle Aesthetics MedSpa in Braintree to learn a little about non-invasive beauty services that are trending right now.

DIAMOND GLOW FACIAL:

Corrective and Preventative Skincare

This is not your run-of-the-mill facial. The Diamond Glow Facial is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that gets its name from the diamond-tipped tool used to exfoliate the top layer of skin. The treatment also infuses nourishing serums deep into the epidermis resulting in brighter and more hydrated skin. The treatment is ideal for men and women who have dull, dry, sun-damaged, or hyperpigmented skin, or for those who want to reduce the appearance of acne scars or stretch marks.

“The Diamond Glow Facial can be done with no downtime, making it possible for clients to come in before special events,” says Nicolle Sargent, Clinic Manager at Gentle Aesthetics.

ULTHERAPY®:

The Lift and Tighten Miraclee

Ultherapy® is a dual-depth treatment that utilizes ultrasound technology to stimulate the growth of new collagen. Unlike Botox, which focuses on muscle relaxation, Ultherapy® targets the deep foundational layer of the skin, resulting in natural-looking improvements. It’s a go-to option for those seeking to smooth and tighten the neck, chin, and brow, while improving fine lines and wrinkles on the neck and décolletage (upper chest).

“Ultherapy® provides a lifting and tightening effect and is a popular treatment with clients ranging in age from their 30s to 70s,” says Sargent.

ULTHERAPY®

CoolSculpting® Elite: Freezing Away Fat

For those struggling with stubborn pockets of fat, CoolSculpting® Elite offers a state-of-the-art nonsurgical solution. An FDA-approved fat contouring method, CoolSculpting Elite works by targeting and freezing fat cells without causing harm to the skin. The dead fat cells are metabolized by the body, resulting in an overall smoother appearance.

IPL PHOTOFACIAL: Sun Damage Eraser

A tool that is often used to target minor skin imperfections like brown spots, small veins, unwanted freckles and even rosacea, is the IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacial. This treatment reverse signs of aging by altering your skin at the cellular level. Pigmentation will rise to the surface layers of the skin, and then it will dry up and shed from the skin’s surface—a painless, minimally visible process that takes about a week.

VIP MEDSPA MEMBERSHIP: Convenient and Cost-Effective

Maintenance

Clients who are committed to achieving and maintaining anti-aging goals might consider opting for a medspa membership. The Gentle Aesthetics Beautiful You VIP Membership offers clients customized treatment plans as well as one free aesthetic maintenance treatment of their choice per month. Members also gain significant savings on popular deluxe treatments. The program is designed to be a comprehensive and affordable aesthetic treatment program for achieving a more youthful, rejuvenated, and toned appearance.

Sweat and Refresh

Saltwater Soul Sauna brings the rejuvenating powers of the Nordic Cycle ritual to the South Shore.

It is not easy to explain why going from a 170-degree sauna into a 60-degree ice bath is a calming experience. Many would argue that the benefits of sauna-to-coldplunge therapy (or hot-to-cold therapy) are best experienced firsthand. Enter Saltwater Soul Sauna, a wood-fired mobile sauna business that brings a spa-like experience right to people’s doorsteps.

Marshfield resident John Walsh established Saltwater Soul Sauna in May of 2023, offering private rentals and frequently collaborating with like minded health and wellness businesses to host Saltwater Soul Sauna events at locations across the South Shore. Packages include delivery of the mobile sauna, orientation and tutorial for safety, kiln-dried wood and essential oils.

Walsh worked with a company to custom design the

mobile sauna. Inside, the 7-by-12 foot space is wrapped in Nordic spruce and features a wood stove and a large scenic window. He typically encourages participants to follow the “Nordic Cycle,” which consists of 10 minutes of hot (sauna) therapy followed by up to three minutes of cold (ice bath, ocean plunge, cold shower, etc.).

“They do this three times, and if they can get through those stages, usually it brings a calmness,” says Walsh. “I do a tutorial at the beginning, but it’s hard to explain the experience to people unless they physically go through it.”

The inspiration for the Nordic Cycle comes from Finland where the tradition of sauna-to-cold-plunge therapy is well known. In fact, in Finland there are about two million saunas—or about one for every two people. Here in the

22 SPRING 2024 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE HERE AND NOW

United States, some medical research has determined a few health benefits of saunas, including reduced stress and chronic pain, improved cardiovascular health, and less joint and muscle tension. Walsh realized the benefits of stress relief firsthand. While vacationing with his wife in Montreal, they visited a hydrotherapy spa where they cycled through saunas and ice baths. “It was probably the most relaxed and calm that I’ve ever been in my life,” says Walsh, who later installed a sauna in his home.

For Walsh, who works full-time in IT and healthcare, Saltwater Soul Sauna is a passion project. “During the pandemic, I was struggling with anxiety, so the sauna was always that calming place,” he says. “I thought to myself: how can I bring this to the South Shore?”

Since establishing the business, Walsh has partnered with several yoga studios and fitness centers as well as the JPH Organization in Marshfield and Island Creek Oysters in Duxbury. Oftentimes, he works with those looking for a new kind of fundraiser. “I wanted to do this so that I could introduce this healing experience to the community and also help local charities and nonprofits raise money,” he says.

The events tend to start with a handful of nervous participants—unsure whether they will be able to do three full cycles. Yet, as Walsh notes, the events often end with not only participants feeling more relaxed, but also a group camaraderie between those who went through the challenging experience together. “There was a group of women at Island Creek Oysters who were laughing and chatting, and I assumed they all knew each other, but later I learned that they had just met,” he says. “That has been something I didn’t expect, but is really cool to see—the community coming together in that way.”

Paintings to Patterns

Textile designer Dayna Hartford’s toile creations capture the essence of the South Shore.

Every community along the South Shore has its own historic landmarks and familiar sites that make it unique and distinctive. Textile designer Dayna Hartford, owner of Dayna’s Textiles, has been capturing these signature settings with her paintbrush, one town at a time, and transforming them into collage-like keepsakes that celebrate the region’s history and beauty.

Hartford paints each series of scenes in a shade of Ecoline watercolor blue and pieces them together to form detailed vignettes, laid out in a monochromatic repeating pattern—a technique known as toile. Using professional scanning and printing technology, she produces flawless, high-quality toile-on-textile products, ranging from wallpaper and shower curtains to tea towels and coffee mugs.

“It’s amazing to be able to print actual watercolors on textiles,”says Hartford. “I can add so much texture, shadowing and white points to the design.”

Originally from Cape Cod, Hartford started off depicting landmarks in the communities from Sandwich to Provincetown, complete with lighthouses, bridges and monuments. She accented her paintings with seagulls, sailboats, fishing boats, lapping waves, surfers, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders. Now a resident of Rockland, Hartford expanded her portfolio of patterns to include several South Shore towns.

Her Plymouth toile design caught the attention of the Plimoth Patuxet Museums where it now adorns one of the exhibits. The museum also commissioned a special historic pattern, which includes images of the Mayflower II, Pilgrim homes from the 17th-century English Village, the Wampanoag homesite, and the Plimoth Grist Mill. This pattern is featured on a collection of tea towels and sherpa blankets that are sold in the museum’s gift shop.

More recently, Hartford painted toile designs for the towns of Hingham, Marshfield, Cohasset, Duxbury and Scituate, highlighting iconic buildings and sights that epitomize each locale. For example, Hingham’s pattern features Wompatuck State Park, the Old Ship Church Meetinghouse, World’s End reservation, the historic Eagle steamboat, and the Memorial Bell Tower. “In Hingham, there were almost too many historic sites to choose from,” she notes.

Designing a Dream

Even before Hartford knew what a textile designer was, she wanted to be one. As a child, she would often draw patterns on graph paper, prompting her art teacher to encourage her to pursue a bachelor of fine arts degree in textile design at UMASS-Dartmouth. For the past 11 years, she has been working as a graphic designer for the trade show industry. Recently, she and her husband, Chris, opened Printivize, a professional printing and graphics company, in Rockland.

Growing up, her dad, Mike Day, also inspired her to follow her dreams—both as a craftsman and as a small business owner. He owns Day Sign Company in Mashpee and creates hand-carved gold leaf signs for businesses. Hartford began working in his shop as a teenager, and he taught her the art of hand-lettering. “Having my dad as a role model has been really helpful. His influence has been huge,” says Hartford.

A mother of two young children, Hartford sits down to paint each night after her kids have gone to bed. “It’s always been a dream of mine to have my own design studio and my own brand,” she says.

While the majority of Hartford’s customers are interior designers, she also sells a variety of home home décor and gifts adorned with her toile patterns on her website and through her Etsy shop. These products include: wallpaper, tea towels, pillow covers, sherpa blankets, shower curtains, mugs and more. In addition to working on her own designs, Hartford accepts private commissions for clients seeking customized toile patterns for their homes.

Empowering Families & Providing Educational Support

Founded in 1970 by Rosemary Wahlberg, South Shore Stars has evolved from a childcare provider to a beacon of educational support and excellence on the South Shore, serving more than 1,300 children. Over the course of five decades, the organization has expanded its services beyond affordable childcare, embracing a wide array of programs aimed at ensuring school readiness, academic success, and healthy development.

South Shore Stars programs now encompass early education, specialized support for middle and high school students, and home visiting programs, reflecting the organization’s commitment to supporting the whole child, from infancy through adolescence. This growth highlights our dedication to empowering families, including those facing economic challenges, by providing opportunities for development and success.

The launch of the Stars School & Learning Center, which is slated to open its doors in Weymouth in the fall of 2024, marks a pivotal milestone. This new school will address a critical need in the South Shore community for specialized support for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences entering grades one through five. South Shore Stars is also exploring opportunities to broaden their educational reach by supporting a wider age range, ensuring continuity and comprehensive care for students. Recognizing the scarcity of resources for these students in our region, the school aims to fill this gap by providing targeted educational interventions, tools and strategies to help dyslexic students thrive. By focusing on individual strengths and learning styles, and fostering developmental growth, South Shore Stars is setting new standards for educational inclusivity, early literacy interventions, and support for families and students throughout the South Shore.

To ensure that financial constraints do not hinder access to specialized programs, South Shore Stars has established a scholarship fund, to ensure educational equity and support for families in need. The nonprofit organization’s mission and values underscore the significance of recognizing the individuality of each child, promoting independence, and celebrating diverse cultures. We are committed to facilitating learning and fostering developmental growth by identifying and enhancing each child’s strengths, skills, interests, and learning styles.

Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Jennifer Curtis and a team of specialists, South Shore Stars is committed to creating an environment where every child can succeed and shine, regardless of their learning differences. As we look to the future, South Shore Stars continues to advocate for children with unique learning needs, embodying our commitment to an inclusive educational environment. Through the Stars School & Learning Center and our suite of comprehensive services, South Shore Stars is dedicated to building a community where every child is nurtured, challenged, and given the opportunity to excel, laying the foundation for a brighter future for all.

New England Village Connecting People, Purpose & Passion

In the late 1960s, while visiting their children at a special needs summer camp, a group of parents discussed the reality facing their children as they approached adulthood. At that time, few acceptable residential options were available for adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. These pioneering families envisioned creating an appropriate and enriching residential community for their children. In 1972, they formed New England Village (NEV), a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit corporation.

Today, New England Village operates three locations on the South Shore of Massachusetts and serves more than 150 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism and Down syndrome, and sensory disabilities such as hearing and vision impairment. New England Village’s mission is to empower these individuals to realize their potential and pursue their dreams through innovative programs and community living

An international designer teaches South Shore residents how to dress.

Nina Pimenta’s earliest memory is watching her maternal grandmother Maria José Santos work at her sewing machine in a sunny corner of her modest home in a small Brazilian town. Before long, Pimenta was sitting at that very same sewing machine, learning the craft of designing and making clothes from her grandmother.

Pimenta began modeling in Brazil as a pre-teen, and at just 16 years old she moved all the way to Portugal where she continued modeling and studied for five years at the Portuguese Fashion Institute. Her classwork included design, styling, fabric technology and the business of fashion. During this time, Pimenta began to develop her own design aesthetic and philosophy.

“I began to notice that when you are dressed well, and for your own personal comfort, people don’t remember your clothes, they remember you,” says Pimenta. She also came to believe that individuals should dress for the person they aspire to become. “Don’t dress for where you are, dress for where you want to be,” she says.

At the conclusion of her studies, Pimenta moved back to Brazil and in 2021, after a 20-year career in the fashion industry, she relocated to the United States to join her new husband in Hingham. “It was sort of like starting all over again,” she says. “Since I did not have a following or a reputation here, I began by simply tailoring clothes.”

Pimenta’s humble start on the South Shore soon led to bigger things as locals began to discover her immense talent. By the summer of 2022, she had acquired enough business to open her own small studio at the rear side of 60 South Street. She was hired to design an original

Based in Hingham, Fashion designer Nina Pimenta helps South Shore residents dress their best, offering everything from tailoring to custom clothing design services. She recently showcased a new spring collection of couture fashions at Boston Fashion Week.

dress for a local bride’s wedding rehearsal. “The bride fell in love with the dress and received many compliments,” says Pimenta. “Because of that dress, I started getting a lot of referrals for custom pieces.”

In addition to tailoring, Pimenta expanded her business to include a variety of styling services. She began offering wardrobe consultations, helping clients pinpoint the clothing styles that fit their body shape best. She teaches people how to “shop their closet,” to find staple pieces that can be mixed and matched in different ways, and also offers color consultations to individuals trying to determine the colors of clothing, accessories and makeup that are the most flattering. For some of her local customers, Pimenta has provided personal shopping services, or customized couture fashions for special occasions.

In the spring of 2023, Pimenta enthusiastically accepted an invitation to create a clothing collection for Boston En Vogue’s Modern Luxury showcase at Boston Fashion Week. After months of hard work and late nights designing and sewing her original pieces for the show, Pimenta’s very first collection was launched on October 14 of last year.

The theme for Pimenta’s collection was inspired by the feeling of awakening and newfound freedom that she felt after leaving her unhappy marriage. “The lightness of the fabrics and the well-structured shoulders demonstrate the power and understanding of myself that I was beginning to feel,” she says. “The voluminous, puffed sleeves represent the fullness of my future.”

As the models strode down the runway at the Newbury Street venue wearing her creations, Pimenta was struck by the significance of the moment. “This was the realization of a childhood dream born many years ago by my grandmother’s side,” she says. “I never really thought that this little girl from Brazil would grow up and present her own designs in the U.S. I truly hope to inspire other women who feel trapped in some way to dig down deep and claim their own power and future.”

When it comes to fashion, Pimenta believes in quality over quantity and that staple pieces can be worn in a multitude of ways to create distinct looks for different occasions and times of day. We challenged the designer to do just that, by styling Hingham resident and fashion influencer Amy Hendy (IG @amylhendy), using a two-piece pantsuit from Hendy’s own closet.

86 FASHION DESIGNER

Pimenta says that suits can be “deconstructed,” with the jacket or pants worn separately and dressed up or down for any purpose. In this image, Hendy enjoys her morning coffee in a casual, but stylish sweater paired with the suit pants. She is ready for the morning carpool or a relaxed breakfast with friends.

87

An untucked white button-down shirt and a sleeveless, hooded sweatshirt worn underneath the jacket creates a more elevated look that might be suited to a meeting at work or school.

“Because the sweatshirt is sleeveless, it does not add bulk underneath the jacket,” says Pimenta.

“If you can’t find a sleeveless hoodie, you can always cut the sleeves off a regular one.”

The jacket sleeves are pushed up slightly, revealing a bit of the white shirt, where Pimenta layers a silver cuff bracelet on each wrist.

“Accessories should not be overlooked and can dramatically alter the overall feel of an outfit,” she says. “The cuffs make the look more distinct and fun and add a bit of shine.”

Here, in the dressiest of the three looks, Pimenta added in a piece from her own collection of original designs, which she presented at Boston Fashion Week. Her short white, Mikado silk dress is fashioned as a shirt. The belt gives Hendy more of a defined shape than the other two outfits. Open-toe silver heels complete the look. Hendy is ready for an afternoon in Boston followed by cocktails in a fancy bar.

A Hull bungalow transformation 360 yards from the sea captures the hearts and attention of many.

92 SPRING 2024 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE RETRO REMODEL

alty” is a frequently used adjective in our region, but it has various meanings. Some days the ocean breeze is so salty, its aroma stretches for miles. Then there are salty characters. Many New Englanders have crossed paths with these individuals. They are salty perhaps because they are tough, weathered, and don’t suffer fools gladly. When Emily Copeman named her cottage in Hull The Salty Daughter, she had all of the definitions of “salty” in mind, especially the latter. “My dad loved that I had strong opinions and that I didn’t hold back,” says Copeman. “He often described me as salty because I had this fire in me, and I think he really got a kick out of it.”

The Salty Daughter is a year-round rental property in Hull that is 360 yards from the beach. Copeman renovated the home in 2022 and 2023, capturing the attention of locals on Instagram as well as producers at the Magnolia Network, who featured the cottage project on the television program Beachfront Bargain Hunt in the fall of 2023. The television show tells the compelling story of a beach bungalow transformation and a mother and daughter duo meeting in the middle on design decisions. Of course, there is more to Copeman’s story.

Copeman grew up in Hingham, and her parents taught her about the world of real estate; her father, Frederick Copeman, worked in real estate investment and her mother, Pamela Copeman, is an interior designer. “I grew up with a lot of exposure to the concept of investing in real estate, and I knew and appreciated the design world because I was always visiting the showrooms in Boston with my mom,” says Copeman.

Today, Copeman lives in Scituate with her two daughters, Ella, 5, and Daisy, 7. She works full time managing a sales team for a telehealth company. Before she saw the listing in Hull, she had bought, renovated, and sold two other properties. “I learned a lot of really hard lessons on those projects, and those experiences filled my toolbox,” she says.

In 2021, Copeman’s father died unexpectedly. “His passing was really difficult and put a lot of things into perspective,” says Copeman, especially as it relates to taking chances and going after her dreams like owning and operating a beach rental. With their father’s passing, Copeman and her brother were beneficiaries of life insurance and she decided to invest in a beach property that she could rent out year-round and ultimately pass on to her daughters to own and manage. “I really knew nothing about generational wealth when I was starting out in the world, and I wish I had,” says Copeman. “Now as a single mom, I’m trying to establish and sustain generational wealth so that I can feel better about the future I’m providing for my kids. I want them to have something to fall back on.”

93 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

As it happens, in 2022, a small bungalow popped up on the market in Hull. “It was this funny little house, and I asked my friend Molly Walker, a realtor for Coldwell Banker in Scituate, to schedule a showing,” says Copeman. “Before we even saw it, I told her, ‘I think this is the house.’”

Located near the Kenberma neighborhood of Hull, the house was painted bright teal and surrounded by overgrown brush. Stairs and siding dripped with rust and paint was chipped and fading. Inside, the home was wrapped in dark brown wood paneling and mismatched flooring. The listing screamed “work.” But, Copeman saw potential.

The location of the property was what Copeman was after. “It is two blocks from the beach, and it’s close to Kenberma, so you can walk to get ice cream, and there’s a grocery store, laundromat, restaurants, and a pharmacy—everything you need is right there,” she says. Copeman knew the neighborhood because she grew up going to Nantasket Beach with her family. Now an adult, she and her daughters spend every chance they get at the beach in Hull.

Copeman bought the funny little house and began renovations. She brought her mom in to help with interior design decisions. “My mom was my fun, needling sidekick,” she says. “She and I are very different. She is very flamboyant, loud, and bold in her color choices. She is pretty much always wearing either fur, sequins or diamonds even if you see her at the dump.”

94 SPRING 2024 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE

Copeman has a tendency to lean towards calming colors, and while most of the home is finished in a palette of neutrals, her mom inspired Copeman to choose bolder choices in some areas, such as the striped retro wallpaper in the kitchen and the light fixture over the dining room table. “She helped me see that if I invested in one really spectacular statement piece in a room, I could go cheaper in another area because that one piece elevated the room enough that you didn’t notice that the chairs were from Ikea, or Home Depot,” she says.

Copeman worked with contractor Scott Knobloch, and as the project evolved, Copeman uncovered more information about the previous owner’s style and began to see the home in a new light. The crew pulled back layers of bold and bright wallpapers and found theater tickets stuffed into the floorboards. “I started with this muted, neutral mood board, but as we learned more about the house and its previous owner, I started to realize that I needed to let it have some more personality,” she says. “I started adding color here and there, and I got bolder as the project went on.”

Major renovations included insulating the home, laying new flooring throughout most of the upstairs and downstairs, extending the patio off the back of the house with a pergola overhead, and installing a new central kitchen, a downstairs kitchenette and updating two bathrooms. Structurally, the footprint of the home remained the same. “I really tried to avoid moving walls or adding bedrooms and bathrooms, and instead thought about the use of the space, and then made the most economical decisions I could,” she says.

I started with this muted, neutral mood board, but as we learned more about the house and its previous owner, I started to realize that I needed to let it have some more personality. I started adding color here and there, and I got bolder as the project went on.

97 www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

Much to Copeman’s delight, only smaller renovations were required in other areas. The dark wood paneling that lined the walls and the wood floors in some bedrooms were in good shape. She painted the paneling white and the bedroom floors different shades of gray and blue. In the children’s room, she used the funky room layout to her advantage by having her contractor install a cozy cubby of custom bunk beds. The nook is finished with a backsplash of whimsical wallpaper.

The project was not without hiccups. A pipe was hit in the process, flooding the flooring that had just been laid down. Other funny situations unfolded, like a cat that would not leave. “You can plan, project, and calculate

until the cows come home, but there are always things that pop up that you don’t expect,” says Copeman.

Copeman began renting out the property in the summer of 2023. There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two kitchens. The separate upstairs and downstairs spaces work well for groups and families who are traveling together. In the upstairs living room, there is a built-in full of games and movies, as well as a record player. “I want people to come away with family memories,” says Copeman.

“For example, there’s a huge record collection. I have never been on vacation at a house with a record player, but I think as a child, I would have loved to dance with my family in

98 SPRING 2024 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE RETRO REMODEL

the living room and maybe put on records that were relevant to my parents when they were my age.”

Copeman hopes to pass the Salty Daughter on to her daughters one day, and while they are still young, they seem to be picking up on their mom’s enterprising spirit. “We are always brainstorming about the house,” says Copeman. “One day, we were driving home from Hull and my daughter Daisy said, ‘Mom, I think the next house should be the Salty Mama, and then the house after that should be the Salty Sisters.” Her younger daughter agreed as Copeman laughed, getting a kick out of her salty daughters in training.

A Hull home maximizes functionality while capitalizing on panoramic views.

In the Green Hill neighborhood of Hull, on the upward slope of aptly named Summit Avenue, a newly constructed single-family home takes full advantage of the sweeping water views in nearly all directions. Boats bob in the shallows below, along the shore of Crescent Beach while, across the water, the vista extends to Gun Rock, Seal Rock, Little Black Rock and beyond to Boston’s skyline.

The new homeowners, who lived in Cohasset for more than 20 years, found themselves drawn over and over again to this particular neighborhood, to this specific one-way street in Green Hill. They concluded: “If we could live in Hull, we’d want to live on this street.”

A few years ago, a property became available in their ideal location—but the existing home’s condition was less than ideal. Built in 1900, the structure had fallen into disrepair; however, inspired by its flawless location, the prospective buyers could see the promise of the property and were able to purchase it as a teardown project.

Once they brought in architect Susan Hoadley, of Hoadley Martinez Architects in Cohasset, the vision came clearly into focus: “Our goal was to put the family in touch with the sky and the nearly 360-degree views,” Hoadley says. Rounding out the team were builder Jacques LeFevre, founder of Denisson Corp. in Hingham; interior designer Nora Speer, owner of Nora Speer Design in Cohasset; and Judith Whalen, designer and co-owner of the Design Studio in Hull.

With their two children poised to leave the nest, the couple sought a contemporary design that would meet their entertaining and relaxation needs—and also entice their son and daughter to return home often.

Topmost on their must-haves list: a cupola atop the second story that would capitalize on the panoramic ocean and Straits Pond views. The squared dome perched at the uppermost point of the house is encircled by 12 windows that fill the space with light.

“My vision for the cupola was to create a comfortable space to entertain or read a book while enjoying the best views the home has to offer,” explains Speer, who oversaw the interior design and décor of the Summit Avenue home. “I selected a green paint to compliment the wood tones, added texture with fabric, and incorporated a nautical light fixture and a large coffee table that resembles a pebble found on the beach outside.”

For ease of entertaining, the cupola includes built-in banquette seating, a wet bar, and an adjoining deck with an infinity railing overlooking the ocean.

“The finished product is spectacular—this is absolutely our favorite room in the house,” the homeowners add.

The property’s prime location enabled the architect to capture both morning and afternoon light to full effect. The eastern façade of the home features expansive windows that extend to the second story, welcoming the sunrise and bathing the kitchen and the daughter’s bedroom in morning light. Mirroring this effect on the western side, floor-to-ceiling windows and a custom slider that opens the entire wall to the outdoors accentuate the afternoon’s

waning light and the setting sun over the water.

In addition to the cupola, the home consists of a main bedroom suite, two bedrooms connected by a jack-and-jill bathroom, second-floor laundry room, a specially designed bunk room with four built-in beds and its own ensuite bathroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, balconies, mudroom, and powder room.

cherished mementos, while maintaining a sense of airiness and openness,” says Nora Speer.

Due to strict zoning constraints, the structure had to be designed with ultimate efficiency, “like a Swiss watch,” Hoadley notes. “Every space needed to consider a strategic view and make best use of every square inch of space on the site.”

With this in mind, much of the furniture—including the beds, armoires and closets, and banquettes in several rooms—has been built into the home’s infrastructure to save space and maximize storage and functionality.

The kitchen continues the theme of enhanced efficiency and functionality with a hidden coffee pantry, a large central island with concealed storage

and deep drawers, and paneled appliances “that help the functional equipment fade into the soft-matte cabinetry,” explains Whalen, who designed the home’s kitchen and bar area. Along the opposite side of the kitchen, a custom-designed hood blends into a framed niche for the eight-burner range that also houses shelving nooks for oft-used ingredients, spices and decorative items, “making it purposeful and functional with a personal touch,” she adds.

From top to bottom, the streamlined home presents an airy impression, thanks to the use of soaring ceilings, interior windows that continue the flow of natural light, minimalist window treatments, and unique hanging light fixtures that balance scope and beauty.

Scituate’s Jesse Cole hits a homer by dreaming up a fun new version of baseball
Photography courtesy of The Savannah Bananas

t first glance, it looked like a traditional baseball game at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton last summer – except the pitcher was on stilts and throwing strikes to the batter, the baserunner did gymnastic flips after scoring a run at home plate, and the players were dancing and leading cheers between innings.

Welcome to Banana Ball, the brainchild of a former Scituate High School baseball player who wanted to make the grand old game more exciting and entertaining.

Jesse Cole and his wife Emily are owners of the Savannah Bananas, who play a variation of baseball where just about anything goes – so long as everyone is having fun, that is.

“This was a game I loved playing, but it was not as fun watching – it’s too long, it’s too slow, it’s too boring,” Cole says. “I thought, ‘How do we make something that is nonstop entertainment and fun?’ I looked at P.T. Barnum, Cirque du Soleil, WWE, ‘Saturday Night Live,’ even the band The Grateful Dead for inspiration.”

Their ideas created a tidal wave of fan interest. Though based in the Georgia city that gives it such a fun name, getting a ticket to see the Savannah Bananas at home is a challenge – there’s a waiting list of around 900,000 people. So the team went on the road, performing to sellout crowds at stadiums across the country. This year, the Bananas will play at several major and minor league ballparks, including Fenway Park June 8.

Sometimes called “circus” baseball, Banana Ball has become an international phenomenon. News media hypes the team whenever it visits their town. Officials from Major League Baseball teams have called the Coles about their success.

Groups as far away as Japan are interested in seeing the Bananas play in their country. The Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., even included an exhibit about the team.

It’s a dream come true for Jesse Cole – though it wasn’t the one he hoped for at first.

Growing up in Scituate, all he wanted to do was become a professional baseball player and pitch for the Boston Red Sox. However, that fantasy ended when he blew out his shoulder playing baseball for Division 1 Wofford College in South Carolina.

“It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” he says, “though I was devastated at the time.”

This was a game I loved playing, but it was not as fun watching – it’s too long, it’s too slow, it’s too boring. I thought, ‘How do we make something that is nonstop entertainment and fun?’ I looked at P.T. Barnum, Cirque du Soleil, WWE, ‘Saturday Night Live,’ even the band The Grateful Dead for inspiration.

The injury led Cole into coaching and then the front office. At 23, he was appointed general manager of the Gastonia Grizzlies, a collegiate baseball summer team in North Carolina.

“The only way you get to be a GM that young is when the team is one of the worst in the country,” he says.

With attendance at rock bottom, Cole started thinking outside the box. He looked at ways to improve the fan experience by experimenting with new ideas. Soon, the Grizzlies were clawing their way back to profitability.

“I read every book on P.T. Barnum, Walt Disney and (baseball innovator) Bill Veeck, and started trying things – dancing players, dunk the GM between innings, grandma beauty pageants, midnight games,” he said. “We started drawing fans. We went from 200 fans a game to 1,000 to 2,000. We were fourth in the country in attendance.”

Cole, who even treated fans by proposing to Emily at one of the games, realized he was on to something. He and his wife decided to go all in by mortgaging everything they owned and buying a club in Savannah in 2016.

Renamed the Bananas and wearing garish yellow uniforms, the team at first played traditional baseball. Even with all the fun activities between innings, fans were still leaving before the end of the game.

That’s when Cole decided it was time for Banana Ball. He began tinkering with the format, adding a two-hour time limit, penalizing pitchers for throwing balls and walking batters, eliminating bunting, awarding a point to the team that won an inning, even allowing fans to challenge a play. And if a fan catches a foul ball in the stands, it’s an out.

Cole also made other changes. He upped the ticket price to $50 and made it all inclusive, so people could eat and drink as much as they liked. He encouraged players to have fun in the field by making trick plays and doing gymnastic flips while catching a baseball. He invited former professional players and other star athletes to play as guests. Cole himself took to wearing a yellow tuxedo and donning stilts to whip up fan excitement.

Before long, Banana Ball became boffo. Demand soared and games were sold out weeks in advance. People were clamoring to see the team, even driving from several states away to take in this brand-new version of the old baseball game.

“We’re not for traditional baseball fans,” Cole says. “We built this game for people who wanted to come out and have fun. Fortunately, we’ve found pretty good demand doing that.”

Comparisons to the Harlem Globetrotters, the traveling basketball team that entertains with trick plays, inevitably spring to mind. Cole says there are similarities, but not with today’s version. His team resembles the Globetrotters of the 1930s and ‘40s, when the games were not scripted and they actually lost on occasion.

“That’s one of the big misconceptions,” he says. “We actually had a losing record last season. Every game is competitive. It’s completely fun and crazy, but you never know who is going to win. That’s what makes it great.”

114 SAVANNAH BANANAS

Ever the showman, Cole began branching out by writing books and creating a website that encourages people to “find their yellow tux.” In fact, one of his inspirational books is titled “Find Your Yellow Tux: How to Be Successful by Standing Out.”

What’s the future of Banana Ball? Cole says the sky’s the limit. He is considering adding more teams and perhaps even starting a league. The fan response is so positive and enthusiastic that he sees unlimited potential for his new take on baseball.

“I get kids wearing Bananas’ gear coming up and hugging me,” he says. “They play under Banana Ball rules and they have favorite players. It’s amazing how much this has taken off. The Bananas have over 12 million social media followers. It’s crazy.”

Crazy fun, that is. Go Bananas!

esigned to attract attention and make a bold statement, decorative cocktail hats have long been a popular fashion accessory worn by British royals and aristocrats. Here in the United States, over-the-top widebrimmed hats and dainty fascinators are often showcased on the heads of celebrities and socialites attending elite horse racing events like the Kentucky Derby. Norwell milliner Jaine Davies is one person who is helping to preserve the traditional craft of hat making, while striving to make her fanciful designs accessible to an even larger audience.

“Growing up in England, hats were part of the culture,” says Davies, who smiles when recalling how she and her husband decided to move across the pond and settle down in Norwell 25 years ago. “We came for fun, for an adventure,” she says. “Our initial plan was to spend one year living in New England, but we ended up falling in love with the South Shore and we never left.”

Always interested in the arts, Davies was first a painter and later a jewelry maker before eventually deciding she wanted to learn how to make hats six years ago. She studied millinery at MassArt in Boston and honed her skills by taking a series of online courses. “I have always loved clothes and fashion, and making costumes and getting dressed up,” says Davies. “I grew up not far from where the Grand National horse race is held in England and when I started making hats the memories all came back to me.”

While Davies didn’t set out to establish a hat business, her designs soon attracted the attention of friends and neighbors. “One year I made hats for my daughter and I to wear to a preChristmas event and I was surprised by how many people came up to me to ask if I could make hats for them too.”

Fast forward to today and Davies is an expert at transforming colorful fabrics and delicate ribbons and feathers into fanciful hats and headbands. Her business, Indigo Hats Millinery, specializes in handmade hats for special occasions. A pair of sunlit rooms at the back of Davies’ home function as a cheerful workshop and studio space where customers can come to try on her custom-made designs.

Each hat is a one-of-a-kind work of art, made using the same techniques and tools that milliners have employed for generations. To begin, a sheet of colorful straw fabric is steamed and shaped around a wooden hat block (Davies has a wide assortment of hat block sizes to choose from.). Once shaped, the fabric is pinned in place and a stiffener is applied and allowed to dry. After the base of the hat is complete, Davies is able to really get creative with the colorful adornments on the hat. Silk flowers, feathers and birdcage veils give the hats dimension and personality.

Davies finds inspiration for her hat designs wherever she goes. “When I visited New Orleans, I came back and made hats that were brighter, poofier and with more pizazz,” she says. Conversely, a recent visit to the John Singer Sargent exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston inspired her to make elegant light pink and black hats with a more historical vibe. Customers can choose from a colorful collection of her most recent creations or have a hat custom made to flatter and fit their specific needs. “Some buyers will send me a photo of their dress and I will design a hat to coordinate with it,” Davies says. Her customers hail from all over the world, from California to England.

The weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby are a particularly busy time of year for Davies and she works to fulfill last-minute orders. “Smaller hat styles are very flattering with different hairstyles and they are easier to ship,” she says. Davies also makes decorative bridal hats and headbands, and is working on a series of wide-brimmed hats for summer. “I think they’re going to have embroidery and have a posh, bohemian vibe.”

Each hat is glamorous and distinctive in its own way and is perfect to wear to festive spring luncheons, weddings and fundraisers. “I’ve had customers purchase hats for watching the polo matches in Newport and others to wear to England’s Royal Ascot,” says Davies, who is a big believer in the power of a beautiful hat. “Some people are nervous at first because they aren’t accustomed to wearing hats,” she says, “but if you find something you really love, it gives you a boost of confidence.”
