Making Waves utumn is one of my favorite seasons to explore the South Shore. The air is crisp, the sunshine is golden, and nearly every weekend is brimming with food fests and pumpkin picking. While northern New England is renowned for its vibrant foliage, the South Shore also showcases vibrant colors–you just need to know where to look. Be sure to check out our photo essay, which features beautiful fall images by Marshfield photographer Heather Tradd, as well as our “Viewfinder” story, which features a stunning autumn image by photographer Mark Grandmont. If you’re interested in spicing up your fall cooking, you need look no further than Plympton’s Hippy Pilgrim farm stand. Check out writer Judy Fosdick’s feature, “For the Love of Garlic,” to learn how business owner Susannah Locketti turned her passion for garlic salt into a popular artisanal seasonings brand. While you’re at it, you can whet your palate looking over some of Locketti’s favorite fall recipes. Beer lovers will appreciate writer Ann Luongo’s “Brewery News” feature, which spotlights some of the region’s recent beer happenings and newest (or soon-to-open) taprooms worth visiting. Every year, we dedicate a large portion of our fall issue to stories that highlight inspirational women on the South Shore. Writer Juliette Pennington’s story, “Movie Studio Maven,” shines a light on the life of Hingham resident Marina Cappi, a single mother of two young children who has single-handedly transformed New England’s film industry by opening Marina Studios (one of the country’s only woman-owned film studios) at Marina Bay in Quincy. Similarly, our “Empowering Women in Business” section is filled with inspiring career stories of local women who have turned their dreams into reality. In addition, writer David Kindy interviewed Nancy Rubin Stuart, the executive director of the Cape Cod Writers Center and author of numerous books that document the lives of notable women in American history. Read Judy Fosdick’s feature, “Rediscovering The Art Complex Museum,” to see a different type of local color. Celebrating its 50+1 anniversary, the museum recently reopened following a long closure for renovations. If you’ve never been before (or if it’s been a while since your last visit) now would be a great time to experience the beauty inside and on the grounds of this fantastic arts institution. Don’t forget to check our calendar for a listing of great community events happening in the coming months. Lastly, if you subscribe to South Shore Home, Life & Style, we recently sent you a free copy of our newest annual publication, Hingham Life. We’re so excited to finally be sharing it with our readers! Be sure to follow us on Instagram @hinghamlifemag, as well @southshorehls, and Facebook @southshorehomelifestyle. - Enjoy

HOLIDAY SHOWHOUSE PHOTO ESSAY Scenic fall photography by Heather Tradd
Marshfield resident Heather Tradd has a passion for landscape and nature photography. Living close to the beach, she heads out to take pictures nearly every morning at sunrise, and often again at sunset when the landscape is bathed in golden light. Fall is one of her favorite seasons to explore the South Shore in search of scenic photo opportunities. Her photo collection features numerous seaside sunsets and surprising autumn pops of color at places like Jacob’s Pond in Norwell, Bay Farm in Duxbury and Norris Reservation in Norwell. Tradd recently began taking photos using a drone, which has allowed her to capture even more unique perspectives of the South Shore. “Photography is my creative outlet,” says Tradd. “The community of photographers on the South Shore is great. I’ve met a lot of talented and really nice people.” To view more examples of her work, follow Heather Tradd on Instagram @heather.tradd. REFRESH YOUR SPACE FOR THE NEW YEAR 5 Tips to create a calm and peaceful home environment. Following the abundant cheer and chaos of the holiday season, we could all use a place to rest and recharge our batteries for the new year ahead. Clearing the clutter and making mindful changes to your home’s decor can have a surprisingly powerful and positive impact on your overall mood. Stephanie Greenstein, the owner of the store Thacher & Spring in Hingham, is somewhat of an expert when it comes to capturing the simple elegance of a casually coastal home. In addition to selling attractive home accents and accessories in her store, she offers home decor refresh services, which are designed to take the stress out of decorating and help clients fall in love with their home again. Here are a few of Stephanie Greenstein’s top tips for turning a home into a relaxing retreat.
LESS IS MORE Embrace a minimalist look. You’ll feel a sense of calm when you have less clutter around you. When it comes to styling bookshelves, for example, choosing the right scale and size of your decor is key. Consider swapping out a few smaller items for a single larger, more proportionate piece.
SOOTHING HUES I love decorating with neutrals all year round, but especially after the holiday season. Swap bright colors for a more neutral or subtle color palette (there’s nothing better than winter whites) or use subtle colors, such as gray-blue.
www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com
27
HERE AND NOW
NATURAL TOUCHES Swap your holiday greens for real or faux light-colored or white florals. I like decorating with dried bunny tail bundles or our Melbourne branches. Textured pieces can bring a sense of warmth to a space while keeping a neutral color palette.
SMALL WONDERS Pick a spot in your home that you pass by every day (your foyer or bedside table are perfect) and add a little something new that sparks joy in your heart as soon as you see it. This could be a new piece of art, a small vase of flowers, or a candle –anything that is new, and something you love.

Having traveled all over the world for her previous jobs, Jarvis was excited to return to her hometown of Marshfield to start her very own boutique catering business. She launched H COLE in the summer of 2021 with the help of her longtime friend, Erik Morrill. Offering more than just delicious meals, the company hosts intimate culinary experiences that celebrate local heritage and foodways. “We truly believe that the South Shore of Massachusetts is a magical place and should be enjoyed and celebrated by all,” says Jarvis, whose business name and logo was inspired by a buoy branding tool she came across that had once been owned by her great uncle, Howard “Mecca” Cole, who was a fireman, lobsterman and cranberry farmer. HERE AND NOW: Q+A
Questions with Renee McInnes,
CEO of NVNA and Hospice cross the United States, home health and hospice agencies are facing more challenges than ever. South Shore Home, Life & Style sat down with the leader of the region’s largest independent home care and hospice agency, Renee McInnes, MBA, RN, CEO of NVNA and Hospice, to discuss her strategy for changing the narrative for home care and hospice.
What has changed for home health and hospice care following the pandemic? I think the pandemic has heightened our visibility. Home care clinicians never stopped seeing patients during the pandemic. NVNA and Hospice nurses were involved in comprehensive conversations with our physician partners. We were assessing and had eyes on these patients, who really should have been in a doctor’s office and in some cases the hospital. Physicians relied on our expertise, since patients were not leaving their homes. The public saw how critical we were to their families and communities. This was happening in every corner of the country.
You recently expanded your hospice services by signing a preferred provider agreement with the largest health care system on the South Shore. Will NVNA and Hospice continue to grow? Our friends at South Shore Health decided to discontinue delivering hospice care. I was honored they asked us to care for those patients, as I have great respect for their team. Hospice care is vital, and yes, we see an opportunity to expand our footprint in the region. We are serving a daily census of 750 patients in 27 communities, and the truth is, we are being asked to do more every day. Our organization has been serving our community for over 100 years and every decision has been based on what is best for our patients. Our Pat Roche Hospice Home is a perfect example. Not every patient can die in their home, so we saw that gap in services and opened our hospice home.
32
WINTER 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
In your role as a health care CEO, you are dealing with a labor shortage. Is that your greatest challenge? Every health care organization is dealing with the staffing question. We have begun an RN residency program to encourage new nurses to join this important field. And I remain focused on my current team, who are excellent. Today, we are on solid ground for nurse recruitment and retention. Our greatest challenge is the pending cuts to Medicare. We anticipate a cut between four and seven percent next year. This is a devastating cut, as we already operate at a loss. As a nonprofit, we remain committed to our mission of serving our community but this eventually is an issue of accessing care. Where is the breaking point for all home care and hospice agencies? It’s a complex equation that requires us to be focused on treating all our patients safely and responsibly working within a budget.
NVNA and Hospice is known for its outstanding ability to harness the power of philanthropy in the South Shore community. What is the impact of these donations? I am consistently motivated and inspired by our donors. Our recent Grace Campaign raised a record-breaking $6.4 million. Our boards and our campaign committee led that effort with focus and clarity. In short, the home care and hospice platform will only succeed with the investment of thoughtful donors. Our future is tied directly to the generosity of our community, and we have proven that donors are inspired to support our mission.
What concerns you most about the direction health care is taking right now? While a national health crisis put a spotlight on the importance of home health care, it also shed light on a deeply flawed system. It is imperative that lawmakers realize that home care is no longer just an assist, but a solution for the American healthcare system. The Medicare investment must be adjusted. Our team is moving ahead. This is a community that needs our services and values our work. I remain positive that our high-level care, strategic discipline, and philanthropic investment will meet these challenges.

2 cups firmly packed basil leaves ¾ cup olive oil Zest and juice from small lemon ½ cup toasted pine nuts ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan 3 cloves garlic 2 teaspoons Hippy Pilgrim Basil Garlic Salt . . . . . . . . . . . . . Add all of the ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Makes about 1 1/3 cups of pesto.

Voted Best Farmstand on the South Shore!
Toss with pasta, drizzle on pizza, mix with mayo or butter to make flavored condiments, add to cream to make a basil cream sauce for lasagna, garnish a caprese salad with it, toss with fresh zucchini and grill…pesto is so versatile it can be used on everything from chicken to seafood! If you cannot find pine nuts or find them too costly, substitute walnuts or pistachios for an equally delicious result. If you do not consume dairy substitute vegan parmesan, a TB of nutritional yeast, cashews or just omit the cheese altogether. It will still be delicious. Resourceful Tip: After pouring the pesto into a storage container a lot of pesto sticks to the inside of the blender container. I hate to see things go to waste so I add milk or cream to the blender and process it. The result is pesto cream which I like to use as a base for cream sauces to add extra flavor with zero work.

AUTHOR TALK - REBELS AT SEA: PRIVATEERING IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The James Library presents author Eric Jay Dolin for a talk about his book “Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution.” This heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. Dolin corrects that significant omission and contends that privateers, though often seen as profiteers at best and pirates at worst, were in fact critical to the revolution’s outcome. 7 p.m. Tickets: $20/$10 Seniors. 24 West St., Norwell, 781-659-7100, jameslibrary.org.

WINTER 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
n Monday nights, after preparing a quick dinner for her three children (age 10, 7 and 1), Colleen Marie Schilpp passes the parental baton to her husband for the evening before hopping into her car and heading across town to the Scituate Salt Cave. Located in the heart of Scituate Harbor, this unique wellness center features a pair of Himalayan salt caves that offer a therapeutic spa-like experience called halotherapy. It is here, surrounded by walls of glowing salt and beneath a ceiling designed to look like the night sky, that Schilpp hosts weekly “Salt and Stars” reiki and astrology events. The founder of Colleen Marie Healing, Schilpp likes to arrive 10-15 minutes before her classes begin to soak up the stillness of the cave, breathe in the salty air, and set her intentions for the evening. “As soon as I step through the doors of the cave I feel more relaxed,” says Schilpp, who built her small business around a blend of spiritual healing practices, including reiki, astrology and intuitive tarot readings. “I’ve come to recognize the importance of self care and filling my own cup so I can better help others.” During the Salt and Stars sessions, participants relax on zero gravity chairs inside the salt cave and each individual is given a blanket and an eye pillow for added comfort. Schilpp leads a group meditation followed by individual reiki sessions and also discusses astrological readings for the week. “Astrology has given me the gift to know I am exactly who I am meant to be and also how inextricably linked we are to the greater order of things,” says Schilpp. A Scituate native, Schilpp studied early education at Boston College before moving to San Francisco, California, where she fell in love with yoga and all things spiritual. She ended up getting a job at a crystals shop where she learned the art of tarot and aura reading. Schilpp moved back to the South Shore when she was 23 and put her career

pursuits on hold to focus on being a mom to her young kids. In 2020, while the rest of the world was turned upside down by the pandemic, Schilpp’s life was also in a state of transition. Newly married to her second husband, she began taking steps to achieve her dream of becoming a healer. She enrolled in an intensive year-long astrology course that would later serve as the backbone of her business, she studied reiki in 2020 and 2021, and she took part in a mediumship immersion program. She officially launched her own business earlier this year. “The biggest thing that I’ve learned is this deep sense of connection to the cosmos,” says Schilpp. “I think going through a global pandemic forced many people to realize that the hamster wheel isn’t what life is truly all about. I’m encountering increasingly more people who are asking these big questions about the nature of the soul, and how to find healing in their lives.”

AstroForecast Overview for 2023 We asked Colleen Marie Schilpp to share a few of her astrological predictions for the year ahead.
No matter your astrological sign, the most significant celestial event of 2023 is when Pluto leaves Capricorn – where it has been since 2008 – and enters the sign of Aquarius. Pluto may have been demoted to a dwarf planet, but it still packs an enormous astrological punch. It is the planet of transformation, repressed emotion, the taboo, and bringing darkness to light. In its movement through Capricorn, we saw massive shifts in our awareness of society’s pitfalls, forcing us to face our own unsavory shadow. On March 23, 2023, Pluto will enter the sign of Aquarius and some astrologers (myself included) believe this transit to be part of the famed “Age of Aquarius,” which we’ve all been singing about since the late ‘60s. While we aren’t likely to have quite as shocking or sudden a shift in societal and cultural norms as that generation (with its hippies, experimentation and protests), the same undercurrent is likely to be activated and experienced for several years as Pluto moves through the sign, until March 2043. Expect massive transformation in the realm of personal expression and freedom, futuristic technology, and sustainability. The needs of the collective will hold precedence over those of the individual. Aquarius is an air sign but called the Water Bearer. The question of how resources can be more equitably shared globally will undoubtedly be a focus. The next 20 years are likely to be a wild, free, flower-power ride!

YOUR 2023 HOROSCOPE Discover how your astrological sign will show its influence during the first quarter of 2023. ARIES (March 21–April 19) This is a lucky time for you, Aries! When you are true to yourself and go your own way, you’ll shine. February is always a month of release for you, so if you’re prepared to let go of what isn’t serving you, it will be smooth. The Aries New Moon on March 21st is a potent time to set intentions and launch something new, which will influence your entire year ahead! TAURUS (April 20–May 20) A lot changed for you in 2022, Taurus, which isn’t exactly your comfort zone. While this year is set to be less intense, the first quarter may still hold some of that volatility from last year. You’re looking at the deeper side of things these days, and you want life to be more meaningful and exciting than ever. Maintaining an open mind will serve you tremendously. GEMINI (May 21–June 21) You’ve been feeling a fire in your actions since late 2022, and the first three months of 2023 will be no different. You’ll likely face some bold decisions and feel a thrust of forward momentum, especially between January 19th and March 8th. Pluto will be moving into Aquarius at the end of March, so this is likely a time you will feel invigorating. CANCER (June 22–July 22 ) The first month of 2023 may challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, dear Cancer. Mercury retrograde in your opposite sign until January 19th could bring issues at work to a head, potentially causing delays and miscommunication. Things will ease up in February, though, and you’ll be feeling a new surge of energy come the end of March. It will be all systems go after that! LEO (July 23–Aug. 22 ) Saturn has been raining on your parade for a while now, Leo, challenging your usual happy-go-lucky vibe. Thankfully, come early March you’ll be feeling like yourself again. You’ve been able to focus more than usual, though, and now you have a new surge of creative energy. Jupiter is winking at you from Aries, a fellow fire sign, helping you to feel a little luckier than normal these first few months of 2023. Embrace that luck and take some inspired action! VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22) Your ruling planet Mercury launches 2023 in retrograde, so until January 19th you’ll be feeling rather introspective. After that, things will lighten up and you’ll be able to embrace change. Venus will be in Pisces, your opposite sign, in February, which could bring some lovey-dovey vibes, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The realm of spirituality has been intriguing you for years. Don’t be afraid to let go of control and surrender to your higher self. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 23) The first month of 2023 could feel a little constraining to you, Libra, but that can create the friction needed to make some much-needed changes, especially in your career. Learning to be more
www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com
independent is a key theme for the year ahead and you’ll receive support to do just that when Pluto moves into Aquarius come late March. You’ll feel empowered to take some bold action and to release whatever has been challenging you this spring. In the meantime, stay centered. SCORPIO (Oct. 24–Nov. 21) For Scorpios, 2022 was a powerful time of transformation. You’ll launch into the new year feeling energized–at least, once Mercury goes direct on January 19th. February brings some lovely Venusian vibes from Pisces, a fellow water sign, helping you to connect with your inner muse. March will have you looking at big-picture goals and asserting your inner integrity. The first quarter of 2023 is a dynamic time for you, so lean into your natural capacity for metamorphosis! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22–Dec. 21) The latter half of 2022 had you feeling more competitive and assertive than ever, and that is continuing into the first quarter of 2023. You may come up against other people’s tempers, so remember to maintain your center and respond rather than react. Your ruling planet Jupiter will be in Aries, which means you’ll feel confident and lucky, so that certainly helps! You’ll be back to your optimistic self before you know it, but it’s important to assert yourself this quarter as it will set the tone for the rest of the year. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22–Jan. 19) This is a busy quarter for you, dear Capricorn! In January, both Mercury and Venus will be moving through your sign, so you’ll be focused on communicating and connecting with others - potentially in a more lighthearted and playful way than you’re used to. March is a time of transformation for you, where you may feel like you can embrace more selfcompassion and take energized action in the direction of your dreams. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 18) You’ve been feeling under pressure ever since Saturn entered your sign way back in April of 2020. Good news is that it finally lets up in early March! Use these last few weeks of Saturn in your sign to set clear and practical goals for the year ahead. Of course, then Pluto enters your sign on March 23rd, so while you will continue to feel a sense of intensity, it will come with a breath of fresh, invigorating, transformative air. PISCES (Feb.19–March 20) With your ruling planet, Neptune, hanging out in the Pisces sign, you’ll benefit from its dreamy, spiritual, far-seeing vibes all year. Expect a lovely, lucky February as Venus moves through Pisces, heightening cooperation and peace in your personal life. Be wary not to get too caught in the clouds, and know it will be easier to take determined forward action come the end of March.

Move over, New York and Neapolitan pizza lovers: South Shore bar pizza is spreading across the nation. Written by DAVE KINDY

P TIZ TZ LA E
This is not your Noni’s pizza. At a distance, it might look Italian, but the hot, steamy delicacy served at the local pub is actually a hybrid. Cooked up locally some 70 years ago, South Shore bar pizza is a fan favorite in the towns below Boston—and is now spreading across the country. “It’s been crazy over the last couple of years,” says aficionado Martin Davis of Whitman, who grew up eating the tasty pie in Randolph. “Despite Covid, South Shore bar pizza has gotten even more popular. What was once unique to southern Massachusetts can be found as far away as Florida, Colorado and Texas.” To the uninitiated, South Shore bar pizza is a different dish than the Neapolitan, New York, New Haven, Chicago or even Hawaiian pies many people bite into. Served in a 10-inch pan at scores of bars and lounges across the region, it features a thin, buttery crust with a simple tomato sauce and shredded cheddar cheese spread right to the edge. “It’s a pizza that was crafted here on the South Shore,” says Kerry Byrne, a former food critic for the Boston Herald who
82
WINTER 2022 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
frequently writes about the tasty pie on social media. “It was designed to be simple so a bartender could grab a pan and pop it in the oven while still serving beer.” The history of South Shore bar pizza is murky. Some say it started in Brockton in the 1940s as a quick meal for factory workers after a long shift making shoes, pointing to Cape Cod Cafe as ground zero. Others say it originated near the shipyards of Quincy at the original Alumni Cafe, which closed several years ago but has reopened in Quincy and Pembroke. Then there are those that swear it sprang forth at AmVets Post Number 51, which now has a restaurant called Hoey’s Pizza, or Lynwood Cafe, both in Randolph, or even Town Spa Pizza in Stoughton. Though not a founding site, Poopsie’s in Pembroke is considered to have one of the best pies. The lounge on Route 53 is the reigning South Shore Bar Pizza Champion, capturing the 2021 title in a competition among all comers. Wherever it began, South Shore bar pizza is here to stay. The popular pie is served at eating and drinking establishments across Southeastern Massachusetts in growing numbers. In fact, it even has its own Facebook following through the South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club. Launched by Byrne in 2020, the Facebook page was intended as a vehicle to help local bars make it through restaurant shutdowns brought on by the Covid pandemic. Most places needed to offer curbside or pickup food to stay open, so he hoped to stimulate interest in these mom-and-pop places serving his favorite pizza.

“Originally, I thought I would be writing reviews for 10 people,” a bemused Byrne recalled. “We now have 45,000 members. I didn’t realize that so many people had a favorite bar pizza spot on the South Shore.” In addition to reviews, the Facebook page features fans galore offering recommendations, suggestions, rankings, rants, even recipes for homemade bar pizza—though that’s considered an oxymoron by true devotees. A number of posts are from out-of-state readers who want to know more about the celebrated cuisine or expats reminiscing about their favorite bar-pizza places. One former South Shore resident wanted ideas on where to find a bar pizza that could be shipped to Colorado. His post reads in part: “Do any of you have a recommendation for good pizza to get sent to Denver??? Nothing crazy, just a mushroom and onion, or a linguica and banana pepper..... a simple hamburger would be nice......” His references to toppings show just how South Shore bar pizza has grown over the years. Originally served with just cheese and sauce, many places have expanded beyond the norm to offer large selections of pizza garnishes, including pepperoni, sausage, onion, bacon, buffalo chicken, even ghost peppers. One place even serves a variety topped with pastrami and pickle. The Denver fan should take heart. Raynham native Todd Mead is now offering South Shore bar pizza in Boulder, Colorado. Served from a food truck known as Toddzilla, it is advertised on the Massively Wholehearted Pizza website as the Real McCoy “based on a blue-collar pizza tradition from one small region of Massachusetts, where I grew up.” No matter where you get it or what you have on it, South Shore bar pizza is a winner. There’s nothing like biting into hot pie fresh from the oven, burning the roof of your mouth with molten cheese and then soothing the sting with ice cold beer. For Davis, who is also an administrator for the South Shore Bar Pizza Social Club page, that’s the only way to eat it. “I remember having South Shore bar pizza as a toddler,” he recalls. “We grew up in Randolph halfway between the AmVets post and Lynwood Pizza. My folks were always bringing it home for us to eat. Later, when I came of age, I would go to the bars for the pizza. You have to wash it down with cold beer. That’s the way it was meant to be.”

Bardo’s Breaks into Bar Pizza The newest version of South Shore bar pizza can be found in South Boston. Opened last year at Castle Island Brewery, Bardo’s Bar Pizza has that distinctive South Shore look and feel—but with a secret taste ingredient. “When we make the dough, we mix in some Castle Island beer,” says Dave Lombardo, who co-owns the pizza place with his sister Jessica Bigge and cousin Francesca Lombardo. “We add Keeper India Pale Ale to the mixture. It gives the crust added aroma and flavor.” Before bar-pizza purists start their tongues a-wagging, they should know that Bardo’s pizza is definitely South Shore: it was invented at Lombardo’s Kitchen in Norwood by the family that runs the famed Lombardo’s function facility in Randolph. “We’re the fourth generation to own and operate the family business,”says Lombardo. “We’re taking the next step in continuing the tradition.” Lombardo and his clan decided to take on South Shore bar pizza when the folks at Castle Island Brewing, which is brewed in Norwood, said they were looking for a food partner to pair with at its newest location in Southie. “We tried dozens of bar pizzas from legendary places around the South Shore,” says Lombardo. “A few stood out and tahey’re the ones we based our recipe on. We think it’s a winner.” Many people agree. Bardo’s was recognized as Best Bar Pie in the 2022 Best of Boston readers poll. Boston Magazine even cited the Pickle Pie as “genius.” “I know it doesn’t sound good, but it’s great,” says Lombardo. “You’ve got to try it.” Bardo’s is planning to make its presence known on the South Shore in the future. Lombardo said he and his co-owners are planning to open a second pizza bar in Norwood in 2023. “It will be a stand-alone restaurant,” he says. “We’re excited.”

Handcrafted in small batches and infused with local spirits, Rockland-based Crème de Liqueur is taking ice cream to new heights. By M AR I A ALLEN

hether you’re serving dessert at a chic holiday soirée or simply craving an indulgent treat to enjoy while watching a movie at home on the couch, you can’t go wrong with a couple scoops of Crème de Liqueur This South Shore brand of liquor-infused ice cream custard is the brainchild of Nisreen Galloway and Elizabeth Nash, two friends who met while taking an entrepreneurial studies class at Emerson College. Among other things, the self-proclaimed foodies bonded over a shared love of ice cream and their memories of the interesting ways their family members liked to jazz up desserts. Galloway, who grew up outside Boston and now lives in Stoughton, remembers her dad pouring a shot of brandy over his Sunday ice cream sundaes. Nash, who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, recalls vodka over their lemon sorbet at the end of elegant dinner parties. Inspired by these experiences, the two friends decided to try their hand at making

the way family friends would often pour a shot of
handcrafted boozy ice cream. Elizabeth started playing around with recipes for frozen custard (a Wisconsin favorite that is similar to ice cream, but made with eggs in addition to cream, sugar, and flavoring). Incorporating local spirits into the mix, she crafted a rich and creamy frozen delicacy unlike anything else on the market. “We knew that we had to bring this delicious dessert to the masses,” says Galloway, who partnered with Nash to launch Crème de Liqueur in both of their home states. After spending some time figuring out the permits and other things they needed, they sold their first batch of liquor-infused frozen custard in Wisconsin in July of 2021, followed by a Massachusetts launch just a few months later, in October.

“While we’re based in two different states, we work together to run the business as if we’re in the same place,” says Galloway. “Beyond the stuff that keeps us geographically separated, like actually making the ice cream and delivering products, etc, we split the business responsibilities pretty equally. We are often both in the kitchen at the same time in separate states and checking in on what flavors we are having the most fun making that day.” Nash and Galloway use the same basic recipe but customize their products for their regional markets by adding spirits from local distillers into the mix. For example, one of their flagship flavors, Chocolate Brownie Bourbon, features Nor’Easter bourbon from Triple Eight Distillery out of Nantucket. “Their bourbon has a more caramel finish than typical New England bourbon whiskey and pairs well with the fudgy brownies we get fresh from Mama B’s Tasty Treats in Rockland, Massachusetts,” says Galloway. “However, if you were to get a pint of the same flavor in Wisconsin, you’d taste a bit more rich and sweet notes from Central Standard Distilleries Bourbon (Milwaukee, WI). This summer, Crème de Liqueur launched an Espresso Martini flavor that contained Taza Chocolate (Somerville) Chocolate Covered Espresso Beans for extra crunch. “Our Twisted Apple Pie was created to put the emphasis on the Demon Seed Whiskey coming out of Boston Harbor Distillery,” says Galloway, “The surprising spice of the scorpion pepper in their whiskey paired expertly with the crisp apple pie from Petsi Pies in Somerville.”

Favorites include: French Vanilla Cognac, Rum-Soaked Maple Walnut, Rye Whiskey S’mores, Vanilla Bean Bourbon, Pistachio Amaretto and Vanilla Bean Horchata. While Nash has made Crème de Liqueur her full-time gig, the business is still technically a side hustle for Galloway, who burns the midnight oil crafting batches by hand in a commercial kitchen in Rockland. On days she’s not working at her day job, she can often be found peddling ice cream custard at local farmers markets. Seeing her customers’ eyes light up after they taste a new flavor has been one of the biggest rewards. “Our liquor-infused frozen custard isn’t just about getting a buzz,” explains Galloway. “It’s a handcrafted dessert that focuses on sophisticated flavors and unique pairings. We designed Crème de Liqueur to be a celebration of local flavor in each pint.”

TEA ROOM
Landing in Plymouth After vacationing in America for two decades, the couple entertained dreams of someday moving their family across the pond and opening their own business. “You reach a point in life when you have to take the chance or you’ll never do it,” says Sean. Of all the places they’d visited in the United States, Massachusetts really spoke to them. “Maybe it’s the weather,” Michelle jokes, glancing outside at the rain pelting the shop’s storefront. “We came here and found that there wasn’t already a tea shop in the area. The penny dropped. This seemed like the perfect place for Shelly’s Tea Rooms.” Steeped in their own history of running two tea rooms in Kent, England, since 2007, the Sinclairs felt confident in their ability to deliver an authentic English tea shop experience. In late 2019, they explored Plymouth, Massachusetts, searching for an ideal location to open Shelly’s Tea Rooms in America. They found the perfect spot at 51 Court Street, located in good company beside a variety of restaurants, bars, retail shops and offices, and which enjoys a steady stream of foot traffic. The couple signed the lease, took photos and videos of what was then an office space, and then returned home to England to draft their renovation plans. Little did they know that only a few months later, a global pandemic would descend and force them to manage the renovation of their restaurant remotely. They had to rely on photos and videos to direct contractors, while they waited patiently for their U.S. visas to come through. Finally, in February of this year, Shelly’s Tea Rooms opened its doors in Plymouth. “The welcome we’ve had has been phenomenal,” Sean says. “Everyone has been so supportive—the business community, our new customers and returning customers,” Michelle adds.

TEA ROOM
The Authentic Afternoon Tea Experience To help guide visitors at Shelly’s Tea Rooms, each table is set with a copy of “The Complete How To Guide for an English Tea Rooms,” which outlines the afternoon tea tradition, from the history and etiquette to explanations of what is served. However, the Sinclairs are quick to point out that customers are encouraged to enjoy their tea experience in their own way. “Some people are initially intimidated, but there’s no right or wrong way to do it,” says Sean. “It’s nice to be able to share the experience of an authentic afternoon tea with people who might not be familiar, and show them how to enjoy it,” Michelle adds. In England, afternoon tea is typically served between two and five o’clock, but at Shelly’s Tea Rooms, bookings are made from 11 a.m. and later. For “the ultimate indulgence,” Shelly’s Tea Rooms presents The Windsor, which encompasses “three tiers of decadence.” This option begins with a glass of chilled hibiscus iced tea in warmer months or hot mulled wine tea in colder months. Next, a pot of loose-leaf tea is accompanied by a selection of delicate crustless finger sandwiches, followed by two scones, which are served with clotted cream and strawberry preserves, and finally, petite cakes and desserts.

The Cream Tea is considered the “everyday indulgence,” which is what Shelly’s Tea Rooms became famous for in England. This option features two freshly baked scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserves and a pot of loose-leaf tea. For the younger set (under age 10), the Prince & Princess High Tea includes two crustless finger sandwiches, a classic or fruit scone with clotted cream and strawberry preserves, and a petite cake, along with a drink of choice. The extensive menu offers 103 varieties of loose-leaf tea, including black, green, white, Oolong, herbal, fruit, organic and decaffeinated. In addition, the Sinclairs serve specialty teas, such as Champagne Tea, remedy teas (to help relieve various ailments, including hypertension, perimenopause and high cholesterol), Quirky Teas (such as Apple Pie Tea, Birthday Cake Tea, Pina Colada, and Pumpkin Spice), high caffeine tea, tea lattes and iced tea. For the non-tea-drinker, they serve coffee prepared in a French press and homemade hot chocolate made with dark Belgian chocolate buttons. The menu also includes lunch options, “lite bites,” and vegan, dairy- and gluten-free offerings. Before leaving Shelly’s Tea Rooms, be sure to visit the well-stocked gift shop bearing tea-inspired merchandise, chocolates, English souvenirs, homemade take-and-bake scones and, of course, tea.
Shelly’s Tea Rooms is open seven days a week, and reservations are recommended. Bridal and baby showers are also available. For additional information, visit shellystearooms.com.

Local Color Photograph by
Mark Grandmont of MPathImagery Mark Grandmont has been passionate about photography for as long as he can remember. “I have a memory of my parents giving me a Polaroid SX-70 camera for Christmas when I was a young boy,” says Grandmont. “Although it hasn’t been used in decades, I still own that camera to this day.” Once a side hobby, photography is now Grandmont’s fulltime gig. He specializes in capturing dynamic images of coastal landscapes across New England (one of his favorite subjects to shoot are lighthouses), as well as real estate, architecture, automotive, marine photography and occasionally weddings. When shooting landscapes, Grandmont often spends a good deal of time planning out his images, sometimes picking out a particular lighthouse or nautical spot months or even years in advance. Some of his images, however, are more serendipitous in nature. Such was the case with his photo of vibrant fall foliage by the railroad tracks, which he captured in his hometown of historic Taunton in early November of last year. “I try to go for walks as often as I can anxd on this particular day I noticed that the color was really hanging on,” says Grandmont. “I didn’t have my camera at the time, so I forced myself to head back out after I got home and grabbed my camera.” To view more examples of Grandmont’s scenic landscape photography, check out his Instagram @mpathimagery_photography or website mpathimagery.net.
