ummer has arrived, the world is slowly getting back to normal and our Best of the South Shore (BOSS) issue is finally here! We spent months tallying votes and putting this magazine together, and we are so excited to recognize and celebrate the lucky winners of over 225 categories. We received an astonishing response to our online BOSS poll, with more than 149,000 votes cast for local businesses. After the many challenges of the past year, we encourage you to support all of the amazing restaurants, shops and services in your community. One of my favorite summertime traditions is taking my son for a sweet treat at a local general store. We sent writer Brendan Martin Coyne to visit three standout South Shore establishments for his article, “Convenience Meets Community.” His story showcases how these hometown general stores continue to thrive and bring people together. Summertime is also the perfect season to host a festive gathering for friends and family. Our feature “Entertaining with Elegance” takes a look inside the beautiful home of Duxbury interior designer Jessica Rogan. The article includes Rogan’s simple tablescape tips and advice for designing an unforgettable summertime brunch. Writer Kate Sheehan’s article, “Getting Back to Nature,” profiles a local firemanturned-craftsman who adds pizzazz to the landscapes at local homes by building elaborate treehouses and beehives. While most people go to the beach to enjoy the sun, sea and sand, Hull artist Jackie Ranney goes to collect materials for her artwork. Writer Jen McInerney’s article, “Turning the Tide on Trash,” reveals how the artist transforms piles of marine rope, plastic flip flops and bottle caps into magnificent pieces of fine art. Speaking of beaches, a big thank you goes out to the Kane family of Pembroke for being a part of our Best of the South Shore cover shoot at Duxbury Beach (winner of Best Beach), and the team at Yup Sup in Marshfield for lending us a board. Photographer Kjeld Mahoney did a magnificent job capturing the magic of the day. We can’t wait to get out and soak up summer. Our calendar is filled with exciting events to check out! Quincy author Wendy Francis talks about her new novel, “Summertime Guests” (Graydon House; April 6, 2021)—the perfect beach read.
How does “Summertime Guests” compare with your previous books?
Summertime Guests falls firmly into the summer escape category. The novel takes place over one long weekend in June, at a swank hotel in Boston. Cocktails are flowing poolside, and there’s plenty of bad behavior at the hotel—and beyond—to keep everyone guessing about the woman who meets her untimely death at the book’s start. Unlike my previous novels, this one is also a bit of a mystery.

Who are the main characters of the story?
Cape Cod 5 is here to support your banking needs today and every day.
The narrative follows four different people in various stages of love. There’s Riley, who’s newly engaged and is at the hotel to plan her wedding with Tom. There’s Jean-Paul, the hotel’s general manager, who must manage the latest crisis at work while his wife tends to their new baby at home. Jason’s girlfriend, Gwen, has treated him to a birthday getaway at the hotel, but their relationship threatens to implode, if he’s not careful. And then there’s Claire, a recent widow, who is treating herself

to a mini-vacation at the Seafarer and hopes to run into an old flame of hers in Boston.
Did the pandemic influence your writing?
I wrote the bones of the book starting in the fall of 2019 and finished in spring 2020. There

were many revisions and rewrites over the course of the summer and fall of last year while my 12-year-old son was home-schooling. As anyone who worked at home with kids (and dogs) during the past year knows, your work gets done during those “in-between” moments. So, writing during the pandemic was more of a disjointed process than it usually is, without long stretches of time to myself. On the other hand, writing about the Seafarer Hotel and its guests was a terrific escape from the isolating walls of my home during Covid.
What do you love most about writing?
I’ve always loved to read and write. There’s something irresistible about being transported to other worlds and other people’s lives in the pages of a book. I suppose the thing I love most about writing is being able to imagine an entire world that’s filled with characters I don’t yet know. My characters always surprise me with the things they say and do.

Plymouth artist Jaimee Cooke creates sustainable products inspired by nature. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATE ROGAN Jaimee Cooke is what you would call a local “maker.” An elementary school art teacher who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and a master’s degree in studio art education, she fills her free time by creating everything from macrame plant hangers to digital drawings for art prints, apparel and tarot card stickers. She named her creative business Jaimee Makes, alluding to the diversity of her artistic mediums. The Plymouth resident took up macrame during the pandemic and absolutely fell in love with the craft. “I never would have considered myself a fiber artist, but now it makes up 50 percent of my work,” says Cooke, who frequently combs local beaches for driftwood to include in her art, including her recently launched boho beach-themed macrame designs.

“All of my work is inspired by nature,” says Cooke, who makes an effort to be as environmentally conscious as possible. She makes macrame fish tail keychains, for example, using cord from recycled textiles, and her products are packaged in compostable clear bags made from corn. If asked to choose one product that best represents her as an artist, Cooke would tell you it was her tarot card line. After falling in love with houseplants two years ago, she began dreaming up new illustrations for the cards that integrated her passion for plants with the original meaning of the tarot card. “It’s been such a unique and stimulating challenge,” says Cooke, who says the cards are now one of her bestselling products. From the days when she was a student selling handwoven bracelets out of her high school locker room, and now being an artist and entrepreneur with a growing list of local boutiques selling her products, Cooke has always followed her heart. “There is a song that has been on repeat in my studio lately, called ‘Praise the Morning’ by Twan Ray, and he sums it up perfectly,” she says. “The song says, ‘As long as we keep dreaming, we won’t ever hit the ceiling’ and that really resonates with me and my brand.” To purchase items from Jaimee Makes, visit jaimeemakes.com.

Expert tips and trends to breathe new life into your home’s interior design. BY MARIA ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACK FOLEY Few materials have the power to transform the look of a room the way that tile does, especially in a kitchen or bathroom. In addition to being a durable surface—resistant to scratches, stains and water damage—tile comes in an astounding array of shapes, colors and patterns that can be incorporated in different ways to add beauty and personality to your home. From ceramic and glass tiles to cement and natural stone, the abundance of choices available can seem overwhelming if you’re visiting a showroom for the first time. We recently sat down with the owners of Classic Tile & Stone in Hingham,Julie Ryan and Kristin Henaghan, to learn how they guide homeowners and interior decorators through the process of choosing the perfect tile. Here are a few of their top tips and favorite trends to inspire your next project.
THINK BIG Large-format tiles are becoming increasingly popular. Each tile covers more space, so there are fewer grout lines to clean. Large tiles also make small rooms appear more open and spacious.
RETRO CEMENT For added charm and character, consider using cement tiles with playful patterns. There are lots of designs to choose from. Cement tiles have a beautiful matte finish and feel soft underfoot. Once sealed properly, they are very lowmaintenance..
SHAPE SHIFTING Square and rectangular tiles are extremely functional (you can’t go wrong with a subway or herringbone pattern), but there are other tile shapes to consider if you want to make a big impact. Hexagon tiles are particularly hot right now. Waterjet tiles are available in many intricate shapes and feature clean edges and a polished look.
30
SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
GLAMOROUS GLASS Tiny wrinkles, waves and bubbles inside handmade glass tiles make them shimmer and shine. Lunada Bay agate glass tiles, an exclusive line carried at Classic Tile & Stone, have beautiful banding through the stone that gives them the look of flowing water. Similarly, tiles made from recycled windshield glass add sparkle and are environmentally friendly.
TRUE GRIT Grout has come a long way in recent years. It’s stain resistant and available in many colors. Choosing the right grout for your project can make or break a tile installation. Keeping your grout color subtle can create a cohesive look, while a high-contrast color will make your tiles pop.
ADD DIMENSION Not all tiles lay perfectly flat. Smooth pebble tiles can help transform a shower or tub surround into a relaxing indoor sanctuary. They also promise to give your feet a little massage as you walk over them.
NATURAL STONE The secret to success when using a natural stone surface like marble and limestone is to ensure the tiles are installed by a professional. To avoid risk of staining, be sure these tiles are sealed properly before grouting.
GET CREATIVE No longer a purely functional product, the look of the tile you choose can play a prominent role in the overall design of a space. Don’t be afraid to think beyond the floor and kitchen backsplash either. Since tiles are super easy to care for, they make a durable alternative to wallpaper and can add personality to fireplace surrounds and other areas of the home.

One of the showiest and ubiquitous of summertime blooms, hydrangeas are a popular choice for South Shore residents looking to add a pop of color to their yard. Here are a few tips from local master gardeners for keeping hydrangeas happy and cultivating bountiful blooms.
CONSIDER COLOR “Hydrangeas have the widest range of colors of any plant, from pure white to lime green, purple and of course the classic blue. The color of Big-leaf (mophead) and Mountain (lacecap) hydrangeas can be controlled by adding aluminum sulfate to the soil. Always apply in a circle around the plant and rake it into the top 3-4 inches of soil. Be careful not to apply too much as the aluminum sulfate can become toxic to the plant.”
- BRYCE WHITE, SEOANE LANDSCAPE DESIGN
TRY NEW VARIETIES “There are some great new varieties of hydrangea. Some we particularly like are: Lime Rickey, a reblooming variety with a flower that turns from lime to white; Little Quick Fire, a panicle (cone shaped) hydrangea that blooms summer to fall and will naturally change from white to pink; and Tuff Stuff, a mountain (lacecap) reblooming variety that lasts from summer to fall.”

SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
Dreamy ocean views inspire the design of a custom home at The Pinehills. Gazing through the floor-to-ceiling windows at Anne and Gordon O’Donnell’s custom home, it’s hard not to hold your breath for a moment as you take in the spectacular scenery. Situated atop one of the highest coastal points between Maine and North Carolina, there are unobstructed views from nearly every room in the house. For the O’Donnells, being able to relax with their morning coffee while beholding at a spectacular expanse of Cape Cod Bay is a dream come true. Originally from Canada, the O’Donnells moved to Massachusetts in 2008 and tried living in a few different parts of the state before discovering The Pinehills in Plymouth. Enchanted by the thoughtfully planned-out neighborhoods and the idea of living in close proximity to the ocean, the couple purchased a home in the Hitching Post neighborhood in 2014. The O’Donnells fell in love with the natural beauty of the woodland landscape at The Pinehills and enjoyed the laid-back lifestyle and many amenities in the village. The location of their home was also ideal. It was close enough to Boston for Gordon, a client director for a global IT company, to commute a few days a week, and just a few miles from the ocean, making their house feel like a vacation getaway. The only thing better, they thought, would be if their home had a water view. The couple lived happily in their home for several years before eventually deciding to explore the possibility of finding a plot of land where they could build a custom home and make their dreams of a water view a reality.

“We knew that we loved living at The Pinehills so we started looking at land in the different neighborhoods,” says Anne O’Donnell. She and her husband also joined a workshop with a few other couples who were considering custom homes at The Pinehills. “One day I heard someone talking about the design home with sweeping views being built in the new Dawn’s Light neighborhood,” says O’Donnell. “We came up here and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is what we were looking for!” The O’Donnells selected a plot of land and worked closely with the Cape-based architecture and design firm Polhemus Savery DaSilva to design a custom home to suit their personal preferences. Beginning with a base plan created by the architect, the team walked the couple through the process of making various design decisions. “We increased the size of the windows because we wanted to maximize the view, but we also wanted to downsize the scale of the home a bit, since there would only be two of us living there,” says O’Donnell. Working in this way, the O’Donnells were able to achieve exactly the sort of home they had always envisioned having. The home, which was finished in 2017, features an open floor plan, three bedrooms (one that is used as an office), and a beautiful chef’s kitchen. Anne O’Donnell did the interior decorating herself, keeping with a neutral color palette to achieve a feeling of beachy elegance and avoid distracting from the view outside their windows.

Custom home building is thriving at The Pinehills, where highly skilled home designers take great care to listen to their clients’ hopes and dreams while paying close attention to the landscape. “The land has a voice,” explains Glenn MacKenzie of MacKenzie Brothers Corp. “If the client has land already picked out, we help determine what style of house would best fit with the landscape. Alternatively, some clients come to us with a wish list for their dream home and we help them find a lot that suits their needs.” Homeowners have a say in everything from how many bedrooms and bathrooms their home will have, to what type of shingles will be used on the home’s exterior. “Some clients might know that they like to entertain 25 to 30 people around the holidays and we can modify the layout to accommodate specific needs like that,” says MacKenzie. The MacKenzie Brothers are currently working on a new custom home project in the Dawn’s Light neighborhood. “We are designing this home for single-level living, which is very popular right now,” says MacKenzie. Before breaking ground, he and his team scouted the land to determine the best orientation for the new home. “We went so far as to set up scaffolding at the site and we figured out that if we added a rooftop deck it would give the homeowners a great view,” says MacKenzie. From beautiful floor plans and amenities to cutting-edge green technology, each custom home project is unique. “We tell people to trust themselves and trust the process,” says MacKenzie. Whether built beside a golf course, nestled within a quiet forest grove, or overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, these custom homes are a showcase of quality craftsmanship and beauty inside and out. www.southshorehomelifeandstyle.com

East Coast classics meet West Coast bohemian styles at this Duxbury clothing store. Text and Photography by BY K ATE ROGA N
Caroline Widman aspired to create a peaceful, happy escape for women—a luxury boutique where shoppers could find special pieces that made them feel beautiful. Her dream came to fruition in the fall 2020 with the launch of her Duxbury clothing store, Strand, The Boutique. The word “Strand” means “beach” in German, and the boutique’s effortless fashions have a relaxed summertime vibe, from coastal blues to bright resort pinks. The boutique offers a curated collection of unique and versatile clothing (you can’t find these looks at any big-box store). Outfits can be dressed up or down, and are suitable for both relaxing barefoot at home and enjoying a night on the town. Earlier in her career, Widman lived in New York City and worked for Hearst Magazines. The New England native found herself immersed in style, interior design and fashion,

She prides herself on sourcing amazing brands for her shop, such as Velvet, RAILS, and Faherty. She also loves supporting local makers, with products like The Oyster Bag, which is designed by a Kingston oyster farmer. Made from durable aquaculture materials, these bags are the perfect beach tote. Helping woman feel beautiful and seeing them take time for themselves keeps Widman motivated every day and inspires her to search for the next unique piece. A LOCAL CLOTHING BRAND STEEPED IN SUMMER VIBES PUTS DOWN ROOTS IN HINGHAM. By M AR I A ALLEN
Photography by JACK FOLEY When clothing designer Becky Voelkel was growing up, she spent many summers on Cape Cod, visiting her grandparents at their home in Chatham and filling her days with sun, sea and sand. It was there that she launched her clothing line, Mahi Gold, in July of 2008, and hosted her first trunk show out of a tool shed (painted white for the occasion) in her grandparent’s backyard. Her debut collection of cotton dresses adorned with nautical flag prints was an instant hit. “Cars lined the street and women were trying on dresses in every room of my grandparent’s small Cape house,” says Voelkel, who enjoys reminiscing about the early days of her business. In the years since, the Mahi Gold brand has steadily grown. It now offers stylish attire for women, men and children and sells to customers all across the country, including locally at Mahi Gold Outfitters locations in Chatham, Edgartown, and their most recent addition—Hingham Square. Becky and her husband Brian Voelkel, a Hanover native who was previously the general manager of the Brockton Rox minor league baseball team, moved to Hingham three years ago to be closer to family. The couple fell in love with the community and soon realized how much the Mahi Gold brand aligned with the South Shore lifestyle. “We are best known for our dresses, which are designed to work for whatever the warm weather brings your way, whether you’re heading to the office or the beach, a bridal shower or even a casual summer wedding,” says Voelkel. “One of the key features of our dresses is that they wash and wear so well and they pack

Convenience M eets Community OFFERING A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, HOMETOWN GENERAL STORES CONTINUE TO THRIVE ON THE SOUTH SHORE. Written by BR ENDA N M ARTIN COY NE Photography by JACK FOLEY
For centuries, general stores have been at the heart of many small New England towns, including here on the South Shore. These businesses provided whatever staples and provisions the locals needed, as well as a homey atmosphere where customers could meet and mingle with friends and neighbors. In today’s world, which is dominated by e-commerce and big-box chain retailers, hometown general stores have found creative ways to adapt and diversify their offerings to serve their customers. More than just destinations for fresh baked goods, craft beers and hostess gifts, these stores inspire a nostalgic experience reminiscent of life in days gone by and create a strong sense of community that keeps people coming back. Here are three standout general stores to visit this summer.

further than the historic Marshfield Hills General Store. Visitors are greeted by friendly staff and the aroma of delicious coffee and pastries. The shelves are stocked with local products from around the region, including: SlackTide coffee (Marshfield), lip balms, salves and honey from Queen Bee Honey Products (Pembroke), savory chocolate milk from Hornstra Farms (Norwell), and an ever-rotating selection of craft beer from Untold Brewing Company (Scituate). The Marshfield Hills General Store has something for everyone: onesies for your beach baby, craft soda and candy for the “youngsters,” and a premiere wine and charcuterie board selection for the perfect date night or last-minute gift. You can find plenty of convenience items too, such as flour and eggs for making homemade cookies, grab-and-go-prepared foods, and one of the best greeting card selections on the South Shore—which comes in especially handy since there is a post office located next door.

SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
Situated at the intersection of Prospect Street and Old Main Street, the structure was built in 1853 by Elisha Hall. It once served as a civic center for the area and during the Civil War, government uniforms were sewn upstairs. The building has housed a post office since the 1920s, was home to a Civil Defense Center during the 1940s, and has seen a variety of other uses over the years. There has been a general store on the site ever since 1979. In 2008, actor Steve Carell stepped up to purchase the store to help preserve its legacy. His sister-in-law, Tish Vivado, manages the business and has worked hard with her team to ensure the store provides everything customers could need in a pinch, along with an enchanting shopping experience. “General Stores connect us to a simpler time,” says Carell. “They bring neighbors together and create a

help but notice the flags waving outside the Anchor & Sail General Store. Once the site of “The Bakery” at the historic Red Lion Inn, the site is now home to a bustling new business. Opening up a general store has been a dream come true for proprietor Megan Fales, who moved to Cohasset with her family a few years ago. With a background in interior design and television production, Fales completely transformed the historic space, giving it a classic-meets-modern look. The vibe at Anchor & Sail is inviting, with an outdoor patio and wicker chairs that are perfect for relaxing and enjoying a casual lunch with friends. The store is known for its gourmet sandwiches and prepared foods. If you’re hungry, order a Nor-Easter, a take on the classic Pilgrim sandwich (turkey, cranberry mayo, cheddar cheese) or a McGillicutty (grilled chicken, prosciutto, mozzarella, avocado), presumably an ode to the Irish Riviera, while relaxing on the patio

If you can’t stay for lunch, then try the prepared foods: chicken salad, coleslaw, meatballs, mac and cheese— even an entire turkey for your holiday feast. Half of the store is dedicated to showcasing small specialty gift and gourmet food items, such as olive oil, authentic Italian pasta, artisanal cheeses and jams, as well as stylized cards, stuffed animals and artwork. If you’re looking for some local flair, you will find products sourced from around the South Shore, including Speedwell Coffee (Plymouth), Duxbury Saltworks (Duxbury), Stellwagen Brewing (Marshfield) and Untold Brewing (Scituate). Planning for the perfect beach picnic or backyard summer soiree? A stop at the Anchor is a must. Pick up freshly baked bread, craft deli meats, delectable pastries, and even some ice cream if you have a cooler. Or, if you happen to be staying at the Red Lion Inn, ease into the day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee and watch the world pass by.

1837 as “The Cracker Barrel” (unaffiliated with the chain restaurant of the same name), and known as the E. Wilder and Son Grocery Store in the 1900s, this popular neighborhood haunt is now known simply as The Barrel. Owners Maryellen and Hugh McLaughlin purchased the business in 2015 and have since made significant structural improvements to the rustic building, while retaining its historic charm (original floorboards were repurposed on the store’s ceiling). Aiming to serve as a community hub, the shop hosts a seasonal walking and running program and keeps a charitable tip jar on the counter to make donations to local causes. The Barrel’s wooden shelves brim with an assortment of local products, from Boston’s Meat Grease BBQ Sauce (Pembroke) and cookies from Ginger Betty’s Bakery (Quincy) to travel mugs in Hingham Harbormen red, and candles with an “Entering Hingham” emblem and the zip code 02043.

Kids will appreciate the “Candy Shoppe” section of the store as well as the walk-up ice cream window located on the side of the building. Order a soft serve with sprinkles or a Richie’s Italian Ice and relax at an umbrellacovered table (don’t forget to visit Ray, The Barrel’s resident bunny, in his hutch across the lawn).

BEACHCOMBING WITH PURPOSE
Written by JENNIFER H. MCINER NEY Photography by KJELD M AHONEY
Gazing out the windows of her contemporary hillside home in Hull, artist and activist Jackie Ranney can’t help but be moved by the brilliant expanse of blue stretching infinitely toward the horizon. In this, she’s not unique: for centuries, artists have drawn inspiration from the dazzling beauty of the South Shore’s coastal landscapes. But for Ranney, the impetus for her work also comes from beneath the ocean’s surface—where the unseen but nevertheless harmful force of pollution threatens the elaborate and delicate ecosystem. Ranney knows first-hand that the pristine-looking Atlantic churns with untold litter and debris, which eventually wash ashore or continue to float freely, disrupting the marine life inhabiting the ocean’s depths. Last fall, Ranney was inspired to combine her artistic pursuits with another lifelong passion: cleaning up beaches. Nearly every day, she ventures to the nearby rocky shoreline with large trash bags to collect litter. Whenever possible, she incorporates this trash into her artwork—mixing these found items with plaster, wall paint, cement and other leftover construction materials. After each beachcombing trip, Ranney dumps overflowing bags out onto the floor of her home studio to sort through the items. She has amassed an astounding collection of castoffs—from sections of rope and fragments of battered lobster traps to flip-flops and bottle caps.

BEACHCOMBING WITH PURPOSE
“From the start, working with these materials felt right,” says Ranney, who has completed several large-scale mixed-media compositions that illustrate the need for diligence in the protection and preservation of the ocean and its resources. She calls her collection TART: Trash Art by Jackie Ranney. In one 4-by-4-foot painting, titled “Land and Sea,” Ranney portrays the ebb and flow of coastal life through a compilation of day-to-day detritus, including: fishing rope, bungee cord, bits of plastic cup, traffic cone, bubble wrap, rubber hose, Styrofoam tray, flip-flop, plastic bottle, dock foam and rosary beads. Similarly, the piece, “Cap it,” features an assortment of 93 discarded bottlecaps of various colors and sizes, all of which she recovered from a 10-square-foot section of Hull Bay Beach. “My hope is that more people will start to realize how they can make a positive difference through their everyday choices,” says Ranney. “We can have an impact not only by cleaning our beaches, but in how we dispose of our trash in the first place.” In addition to raising awareness about the prevention of ocean pollution, Ranney has made a commitment to the ongoing preservation of the ocean’s resources. A portion of the proceeds from her TART collection goes to support the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ocean research, exploration and education. “Public awareness is so important for driving change,” she says. “The ocean gives us so much; we need to take care of and nurture the ocean.”
72
SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
Taking On a Life of Its Own Unlike her previous artwork, which took the form of landscapes and wildlife paintings, Ranney’s new collection allows for spontaneity in her artistic process. While she pursued a more planned approach to her traditional paintings, her mixed-media pieces are less predictable and more “reactive,” she explains. “When I begin, I don’t have a set image in my mind of what I’m going to create—I let the materials dictate the outcome, which means that I’m fully engaged in the creative process the entire time,” says Ranney. The creation of “Prickly” took shape after a cleanup excursion to Hull Gut following the season’s most violent Nor’easter. The painting’s centerpiece, a shard of pale green weathered plastic, called to mind the abundant cacti of San Antonio, where Ranney lived before moving to Hull in 2017. Other beach debris incorporated into “Prickly” includes: lobster trap remnants, lobster trap tags, buoy, flip-flop, beach ball, fishing rope, fishing net, treated plywood, bait bag, and boat seat upholstery and foam. “Even trash has a beauty to it, especially because I’m always looking at it through an artist’s eye,” says Ranney. “Once it ceases to be pollution, there’s an aesthetic value to it from being softened, frayed and shaped by the ocean.”

73
BEACHCOMBING WITH PURPOSE
Purpose Through the Process For Ranney, transforming trash into art has been both an eye-opening and rewarding experience. “Many artists struggle with the question of ‘What’s the point?’ in reference to their art, but this collection has given me a purpose and enabled me to answer that question with satisfaction,” she says. Merging her activism with her art gives Ranney the opportunity to express her creativity while raising awareness about the ocean’s plight. “There’s only so much one person cleaning a beach can do,” she continues. “It’s important to me to let people know there is a problem, that the ocean is in critical peril.” About five years ago, while living in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, Ranney and her family took part in a local initiative to protect the nesting grounds of endangered sea turtles. During that time, she learned how sea turtles unwittingly ingested plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. Rescuers would find turtles floating aimlessly and starving to death, unable to dive for food, due to the buoyancy created by the plastic bags in their digestive systems. Ranney then worked on the campaign to ban single-use plastic bags in her community, a measure which passed. When she moved to Hull, she was pleased to discover that a similar ban on single-use plastic bags had already been spearheaded by a group of forwardthinking Hull High School students. On South Shore beaches, she frequently finds what are known as ghost nets, massive snarls of fishing net, ropes, buoys and other gear that has become entangled along its waterborne way. These abandoned nets pose a particular danger to marine life, including seals and turtles, who can become ensnared and die. By removing these nets from the tideline, Ranney ends their circulation in the sea—and sometimes, the contents of these ghost nets wind up on her canvas. With her TART collection well under way, Ranney is seeking gallery representation in New England. Her work has appeared in prominent galleries worldwide, including the National Gallery of Ireland, Atelier in Charleston, South Carolina, and the Fredericksburg Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas. onging to live near the ocean and be closer to family, Jessica Rogan and her husband James made the decision to move to Duxbury in the fall of 2019. After a bit of searching, the couple purchased a stately three-story colonial (built in 2005 by the late Shawn Dalen) and Rogan set to work putting creative touches on its interior. “The bones of the house were just so good,” says Rogan, owner of Jessica Rogan Design. She was drawn to the home’s beautiful millwork, high ceilings and abundance of windows. “The natural light gives off a bright warm vibe, even on the cloudiest New England days,” says Rogan. She also appreciated the home’s functional layout (an important feature for a family with three young children), and its versatility for entertaining guests. Prior to moving to the South Shore, Rogan left her full-time corporate job to be able to stay home with her children, but quickly developed what she calls a “creative itch.” “I would immerse myself in various sewing projects,” she says, “spending hours searching through fabrics online and interior design scheming.” She redecorated rooms in her home (multiple times) and began helping friends and family with design projects in her spare time. Moving to the South Shore presented the perfect opportunity for Rogan to flex her design muscles.

When the world turned upside down in 2020, due to a global pandemic, Rogan resolved to honor her passion and pursue a career that brought joy to her life and those around her. After settling in Duxbury, she officially launched her interior design business. “I’ve always preached to my children the importance of following their passion, and I finally took my own advice,” says Rogan. While building her business, Rogan was making her new house feel like a home. She refreshed the home’s interior with light-colored hardwood floors, neutral wall paint colors and sleek white kitchen cabinetry, creating an elegant, refined coastal look while keeping the design timeless. She utilized a combination of high and low furnishings and accessories to keep things interesting and affordable. Her favorite room in the house is a coastalinspired blue and white living room with unexpected pops of Kelly green and beautiful seascapes on the wall. “Never underestimate the impact a pop of color can have on a space,” she says. Rogan was intentional about every décor element she chose, asking herself questions like: Did she love it? Did it serve a purpose? And did it have meaning and significance? “Your home should be full of curated items that are reflective of you and your family,” she says. “Surround yourself with things and people that make you happy and inspire you.”

SUMMER ENTERTAINING
2. Creative Containers When designing a centerpiece for your table, start with a vessel that you love and that has meaning to you. While this could be a vase, it could be another unique container, like a decorative bowl. Bring the container to your local florist to have it filled with bountiful blooms. Here are a few of Jessica Rogan’s expert tips for creating a stunning summer brunch experience at home.
1. Pick a Theme Choose a theme and color palette and let it lead your design. A pink and orange citrus theme is perfect for a summer brunch and can be easily achieved by incorporating lemons, limes, grapefruit or other citrus fruit into your tabletop design. Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with a Nantucket-inspired tabletop theme. Shades of blue, green and white provide a feminine, summery look and hydrangeas are easily accessible.
Assorted glassware, candlesticks and candles from Darilynn’s in Cohasset. Florals from Consider the Lilies in Duxbury.
3. Carefree Linens It is worth investing in a classic hotel white tablecloth as they are extremely versatile and create a beautiful backdrop. Add a pop of color to your place settings and save time on laundry by using pretty Papersoft Napkins from Vietri. These disposable napkins, which are soft to the touch and highly absorbent, come in a range of patterns and look just like cloth napkins.
106
SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
4. High-Low Design Don’t be afraid to mix and match new accessories with family heirlooms and combine items with different dollar values. This is especially true when picking plates. In Rogan’s citrus tablescape, the Tiffany’s blue and white salad plates were received as a wedding gift, but the bottom plates were an inexpensive department store find. In the Nantucketinspired dining room, heirloom Wedgewood china with a Nantucket basket weave was layered atop Spode plates.
5. Mix & Match Layering your glassware, plates and placemats and using different colors, materials, and textures will add visual interest to your place settings. Don’t be afraid to mix different patterned plates and napkins to add dimension and visual interest to your table.

SUMMER ENTERTAINING
6. Colorful Candles Even when they are unlit, candles elevate the elegance of a table. Use simple glass candlestick holders or hurricane vases and get some fun colored candles that coordinate with your color theme (Rogan loves Caspari Candlesticks).
108
SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
7. Flower Power Accent your home and table with flowers that match the colors of your theme. If you choose to enlist a florist’s help, bring them some inspiration pictures so they have an idea of the look you desire. We love the pops of citrus-colored blooms in these arrangements created by Consider the Lilies in Duxbury.
8. DIY Beverage Bar A summer gathering isn’t complete without refreshing drinks and cocktails. A selfserve beverage station is a simple solution that will keep your guests happy and hydrated. Create a lovely presentation with a decorative tray and canned or bottled beverages that coordinate with your overall color scheme. Fill a pitcher with a signature cocktail and be sure ice is easily accessible.

SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
A PASSION FOR BEEKEEPING AND BEING OUTDOORS INSPIRES A NEW BUSINESS TO TAKE FLIGHT. Written by K ATE SHEEH A N Photography by KJELD M AHONEY A Boston firefighter with two decades of service behind him, Colin Doherty is one of those people who embodies the phrase “everything worth doing, is worth doing well.” This unwavering work ethic helped the Cohasset resident launch a flourishing business that combines two of his favorite pastimes: woodworking and beekeeping. Last spring, before the pandemic hit, Doherty and his wife Allison launched Treespoke Treehouses, a business specializing in the construction of custom treehouses, beehives and other landscape features (the business name is a play on the term “bespoke,” which means custom-made). The journey to launching the business happened rather organically. “I have always had an interest in gardening and being outdoors,” says Doherty. “My wife and I even had a garden when we lived in the South End of Boston.” About five years ago, he decided to give beekeeping a try and soon found himself hooked on his new hobby. Doherty joined the Plymouth County Beekeepers Association and started doing everything he could to learn how to successfully care for bees. He put his carpentry skills to good use by constructing a special hive stand for his property and before long, friends and neighbors began asking if he could install beehives on their properties. “Colin is such a pleasure to spend time with and work with,” says Kevin Leary, whose family commissioned an apiary for their Scituate property last spring. “He’s friendly, caring and handy. He’s just got a great way about him.” Drawn to the significant environmental and ecological benefits of honeybees, Leary and his wife Jenna learned about the Dohertys’ own beehives and were intrigued by the impact the pollinators have on the local community as well as the opportunity for their family. “The kids can peek in the window and see the bees building their combs,” says Leary.
111
B ETEI ST LAEN D TREEHOUSES
Working two days a week as a firefighter not only allowed Doherty to start taking on beekeeping clients—it also made it possible for him to spend quality time with his three daughters, now age 11, 10 and 7. He and his wife have enjoyed teaching their children about bees and nurturing their appreciation for nature. “Beekeeping is fun,” says Doherty. “But the main reason we do it is for our kids.” In addition to building apiaries and installing hives, Doherty is eager to share his knowledge about these fascinating and complex insects. “Honeybees are docile and they are really under assault,” says Doherty. “Some people are terrified of them. Others are curious and want to learn.” For those who are interested in having bees on their property but don’t have much time to commit to the process, Doherty offers annual beehive management plans that include regular hive inspections as well as honey harvesting. He is equally happy to mentor budding beekeepers who want to learn the ropes and oversee their own hives and honey production. A year into their backyard beekeeping experiment, the Leary family is doubling down. “This year Jenna decided we needed more bees,” Kevin Leary says with a laugh. “Now we have twice as many. The hives look amazing and they’re a great focal point in our yard.” The actual process of harvesting the honey can be quite time consuming and requires a bit of skill, as each of the frames are placed in a centrifuge to extract the nectar. With that in mind, Doherty provides his apiary clients with a handcrafted countertop “honey luge,” which is an attractive and accessible way for them to enjoy fresh honey straight out of the honeycomb. The Doherty family likes to incorporate the fruits of their (or rather the bees’) labor into gifts of honey, soaps and candles for friends, and they have concocted delicious honey recipes. “We make a honey syrup for cocktails using equal parts honey and water and mix it with gin and lemon,” says Doherty. “It’s delicious.”

The Buzz on Beekeeping If you’re thinking about trying your hand at beekeeping, correct timing is important. Delicate packages containing thousands of honeybees are delivered each spring so plan to make your decision by December at the latest. This allows Doherty time to build and hand-paint the apiary in advance of installing the bees. Throughout the summer months, the bees gather pollen and, by fall, you can expect their hard work to result in a delicious harvest.

BEES AND TREEHOUSES
114
SUMMER 2021 | SOUTH SHORE - HOME, LIFE & STYLE
When he’s not busy tending to bees, Doherty enjoys building elaborate treehouse structures for local children to enjoy. These aren’t the basic plywood or prefab structures many people think of when they imagine a treehouse. His creations are multi-level structures with decks, windows and cedar shingles that often have the neighbors coming over to ask for a tour. Doherty works with a sawmill in Hanover to source roughcut heavy timber for his treehouse projects and can cater the designs to be simple or luxurious, depending on the client’s vision. The design of the treehouse is also dictated by the tree’s natural shape. “The tree tells you what you can build,” Doherty explains. “One of the most important elements is to build a platform that accounts for the dynamic movement of the trees. There are very few right angles working with trees!” Kimberly Welby of Hingham recently hired Doherty to build a two-level, cedar-shingled playhouse for her children. The treehouse features wide-plank, rough-sawn pine and was assembled using hand-cut square nails. The treehouse, which took nearly a year to complete, even has a swing set and tunnel slide. “Our favorite thing [about the treehouse] is all of the memories it will create,” says Welby. “It’s a magical place for my kids to just be kids and let their creative minds run free. I’m over the moon that I can give them this place to use their imagination.” Doherty’s enthusiasm spills over when he talks about the process behind his work. “This is so fulfilling,” he says. Whether it’s beekeeping or building treehouses, everybody is happy when they see me. It just makes you feel good and it’s almost impossible not to smile.”

When the temperatures start to climb, nothing beats kicking back with a delicious meal or refreshing cocktail on a picturesque patio or waterfront deck. Here are a few of our favorite outdoor dining spots on the South Shore. BY K ELLIE SPEED
Bay Pointe Waterfront Restaurant
Alma Nove
Crossing 9s Patio & Bar at Granite Links
There are heat lamps and fire pits on the outdoor patio at Paul Wahlberg’s hot spot on Hingham Harbor to keep you warm on brisk summer nights. We recommend trying the a Tropical Rum Punch or Fountain of Youth martini and sharing an order of his famous pork meatballs set atop creamy parmesan polenta or potato crusted calamari.
There’s nothing quite like taking in one of the best golf course views on the South Shore while sharing a meal with friends. The quarry-turned-golf course boasts some of the most spectacular views of Boston south of the city. The patio here is lined with multiple TVs to take in a Red Sox game while noshing on a grilled chicken sandwich, sirloin burger or tuna salad roll. At night, just look for the lighted driving range and order up a craft beer or cocktail to enjoy under the tent or on the open-air deck and pergola patio while taking in the breathtaking sunsets over the Boston skyline.

Bay Pointe Waterfront Restaurant When the Bay Pointe Waterfront Restaurant opened years ago, you really had to know about this little treasure to find it, but this waterfront eatery is no longer a secret. The Hynes Restaurant Group’s restaurant features an outdoor deck and bar on the docks of Bay Pointe Marina serving up picture perfect oceanfront views. Try the jawdropping two-pound baked lobster stuffed with scallops, shrimp, lobster meat and seafood stuffing or the broiled North Atlantic salmon with toasted walnut crust. 64 Washington Court, Quincy baypointewaterfrontrestaurant.com

East Bay Grille It’s all about the chill factor at East Bay Grille on Plymouth’s Town Wharf. Belly up to the massive outdoor bar, relax in one of the comfortable chairs facing the ocean or grab a table on the spacious patio and order up one of their creative cocktails (a sparkling sangria or a hot and dirty martini made with jalapeño infused vodka perhaps). Be sure to arrive early as the spots fill up quickly. What to order? The crab cakes and fish tacos are must-try starters while entrée standouts include seafood risotto, charbroiled filet mignon topped with a cognac cream au poivre, and oven-roasted halibut with lobster ceviche. 178 Water St., Plymouth eastbaygrille.com

Greenside Grille The South Shore Country Club’s alfresco gem offers spectacular views of the first and 10th fairways from its outdoor patio. Get started with an order of Key West shrimp tacos or their house special wings before moving onto an order of lobster gnocchi, tavern steak tips, short rib ramen noodles or limoncello shrimp. Relax among views of the rolling green hills of this golf course setting and linger a little longer with a local craft beer or glass of imported wine. 274 South St., Hingham greensidegrille.com
Haddad’s Ocean Cafe Be sure to arrive extra early at this always-crowded hot spot, especially if you come to Haddad’s on the weekends because as soon as the outdoor upper deck opens, it fills up and stays bustling until last call. Sip on an Ocean Breeze or High Tide cocktail just steps from the ocean and share a deluxe seafood platter (filled with everything from fried haddock and clams to scallops, lobster and shrimp). The meaty crab cake plate is also one of the best on the South Shore. 293 Ocean St., Marshfield haddads.restaurant
Lenny’s Hideaway The roof deck at this local restaurant is one of the most coveted spots in town as soon as the warm weather arrives. Authentic Mexican fare is created in the scratch kitchen. Enjoy such dishes as a Baja fish burrito, braised pork carnitas, wood grilled chicken thighs or poblano and grilled corn tacos. 8 Stagecoach Way, Cohasset lennyshideaway.com

It’s no wonder this hot spot has been a South Shore favorite for nearly 70 years. 50 George Washington Boulevard, Hull jakesseafoods.com

Paintings by ALDOUS COLLINS Hanover resident Aldous Collins was an artist long before he became known as a singer-songwriter and front man of the Aldous Collins Band. A New Hampshire native, he got his degree in studio art from the University of New Hampshire, where he learned drawing, sculpture and woodworking. After graduating, he took a 15-year hiatus from art to pursue music. It wasn’t until four and a half years ago, when his wife gave him some art supplies as a gift, that Collins picked up a paintbrush and began experimenting. “Painting is much like writing a song to me,” says Collins, who is known for creating large-scale contemporary pieces. “I don’t really plan out my paintings in advance. They’re more a reflection of my mood, what’s going on in my life, and what’s speaking to me. I let my canvas be my sketchbook.” Most recently, Collins has been working on a collection of abstract landscape paintings, featuring colorful ocean waves, mountains and cityscapes. “I love the ocean and I love the mountains,” says Collins. “My latest painting is

called City Vibes and I also wrote a song with that title. The painting depicts playful buildings on the water.” He creates his art using a combination of acrylic and oil paints, layered with spray paint and house paint. “I was a house painter for a while and I liked how that paint felt when I used it,” explains Collins. During the pandemic, Collins wasn’t able to perform live gigs, so he spent extra time working on his art and launched an online musical fundraiser, called the Spiritual Gangster Tour, to help raise money for local restaurants that were struggling to survive. “I just sat in my living room and played music on Facebook Live and raised about $45,000,” says Collins. Most recently, he did a collaboration with Springdale Beer Co to launch a limited-edition Spiritual Gangster Beer that features his artwork on the cans. Whether he’s making music or painting, Collins strives to put out an energy of gratitude and positivity. “If I can capture the joy of life, that’s good enough for me,” he says.
