The Lord Mayor’s Office A message from the Lord Mayor of Birmingham I would like to wish a very Happy New Year to the Chinese community here in Birmingham and to Chinese people around the world. Birmingham has a longstanding friendship with China encouraged by our Sister City relationships with Changchun, Guangzhou and Nanjing, which goes well beyond our important and growing business links. People born in the year of the rat, will be instinctive, acute and alert in nature which should ensure that they will be brilliant in business. All of this bodes very well for the future of our City. As Lord Mayor, it gives me great pleasure to be able to promote community relations and cross-cultural understanding with our Chinese communities, and to welcome the many visitors who enjoy all the arts, shopping, visitor attractions and fine dining that we have to offer. With over 5000 Chinese students in our universities, the Chinese Community adds significantly to the prosperity and diversity of Birmingham. So, to all our Chinese friends, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous Year of the Rat. Enjoy the celebrations!

With every year, the Chinese New Year celebrations have grown in popularity, with the 2019 festival attracting over 30,000 to Southside Chinatown.
2019 had been a phenomenal year for me personally with my restaurant picking up a trio of awards and having been recognised by the Nachural Signature awards for my community work. The icing on the cake was the birth of our beautiful daughter, Josephine.
For the last couple of years, we are able to extend the celebrations to other parts of city, including the Bullring and Colmore Row.
I’d like to take a moment to thank members of the Chinese Festival Committee, our partners Southside BID, The Arcadian and also to all those who have donated in some form. Without your continued support we would not be able to host such a fantastic event, free to the public. Birmingham Hippodrome have now been our co-producers for the last couple of years, their professionalism and knowledge have enable this festival to push into the next level.
We are hugely thankful to our sponsors and partners to be able to deliver a world class programme to our city. This year we are delighted to be working with Galliard Apsley partnership and Birmingham International Airport and having them as our headline sponsors. This is my fifth year as the chair, with each year being more ambitious than the last. Our celebrations now extends to quite a few days, when including our associates. Our Chinese Festival Committee members all have their own programme of activities, as well as our great universities, community groups and Birmingham City FC, all embracing the culture in welcoming the new year.

It really has been a fantastic year for the West MidlandsChina Relationship. There have been so many causes for celebration over the last 12 months that I can hardly name them all, but I’ll mention just a few. Not too long ago I was travelling around China on a trade mission, promoting investment opportunities between our two countries, including lobbying for a direct flight between Birmingham and China. Chinese major infrastructure is a constant source of admiration for me and I am determined that we see that same progress here in the West Midlands. I have also spoken at several West MidlandsChina conferences, at Aston University and
from Liam Byrne
And what a year for the West Midlands more generally. Latest economic figures show that our economy grew by 4.6%, compared to the UK regional average of 3.5%. We had the largest increase in employment of any region

in the UK, creating over 26,000 jobs in the last year alone. We’re getting on with fixing the housing crisis, with just under 17,000 new homes built last year, up 15% up on the previous year. And to top it all off, the Metro extension to Centenary Square is now open to the public. So, it is with great pleasure and pride that I wish you all a very Happy New Year of the Rat. May you all have a prosperous and joyous year in our great region, and I hope you enjoy the festivities.

Why don’t the Chinese just celebrate the New Year on 1st January? Why does it change every year? The Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals and is based on the time the moon takes to orbit the Earth. (Western calendar is based on the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun.) The first day of each Chinese year will always fall sometime between 21st January and 21st February.
How long does the Chinese New Year celebration lasts? The festivities last for 15 days and end on the full moon (also known as the lantern festival). Chinese New Year celebration, also known as the “Spring Festival” or the “Lunar New Year” is the most important festival within the Chinese culture.
Why is it called the Spring Festival? Chinese New Year usually falls within 15 days from the ‘Start of Spring’ (4th February in the Western Calendar). To distinguish from “international” New Year (1st January), that’s why the Chinese call it the ‘Spring Festival’.
Why is there an animal associated with each different year? Similar to the western star signs, the Chinese have their own Chinese Zodiac. Each lunar year is related to a zodiac animal and recurs on a 12 year cycle.
Why do the Chinese set off firecrackers and have lion/dragon dances? It was believed that the explosive sound and the pungent smell of firecrackers together with lion/dragon dance will scared away evil spirits, who attributes to bad luck.

Fish 魚 “Fish” sounds like ‘surplus’ in Chinese, hence Chinese people always like to have more than you need at the end of the year, hopefully meaning you will save something for the following year. Fish should never be finished - This auspicious meanings for having more than you need every year. The head should be placed toward distinguished guests or elders, representing respect. He/she will then should eat first before others.

In Chinese, Rice cakes (Nian Gao) sounds like “getting higher year on year” The cake is made of glutinous rice powder and can be cooked by frying, steaming, stir-frying or boiling.

Overseas Chinese Association School established in 1965, is a non-profit Charity registered school, offering high quality Chinese Lessons to students in Birmingham. We teach both Chinese Mandarin and Chinese Cantonese. We currently have 480 students and we proudly hold lessons every Sunday during normal academic term time at Queensbridge School located in Moseley Birmingham. Our aim is to teach Chinese language and increase Chinese cultural awareness for the new generation of UK. Teaching them not only Chinese , but also showing them the great Chinese heritage from which they come from, instilling in them our values, traditions and beliefs.
The Birmingham Chinatown Lions Club was formed in 1987. We help good causes we have helped raise a £500,000+ so far. Our aims for this year is £50,000 to go to good causes. We meet at Chung Ying Central, Colmore Row, Birmingham, on the second Wednesday and fourth Monday of each month.
By planting the seeds of our heritage in the next generation, we can ensure that our traditions will survive as the torch is passed on to the future.
Lions club members have volunteered their time and talents to meet needs wherever they exist. Lions are especially dedicated to serving the blind and visually impaired, a commitment made after Helen Keller challenged our members to become her “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” during the 1925 convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. Our motto, “We Serve” perfectly exemplifies the dedication to helping those in need felt by Lions worldwide.

We will be building a national advice and advocacy online service for people whose opportunities are limited due to language barriers, poor health or having to care for those who are ill or disabled. We also aim to become a centre of excellence in the research and development of public policies to meet the health, mental health and social care needs of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

This international collaboration celebrates and welcomes Chinese New Year as part of the Chinese New Year festivities in Birmingham coproduced by The Chinese Festival Committee Birmingham and Birmingham Hippodrome. Following the live premiere performance there will be the world premiere of Corey Baker’s latest dance film, Lying Together, shot on location in Hong Kong featuring acclaimed dancers from Hong Kong Ballet. This 4-minute film, with music by renowned band FKJ, shares breath-taking scenes of choreography performed on some of the highest skyscrapers in Hong Kong. A Q&A with choreographer Corey Baker and dancers will take place after each performance.
