NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Chinese New Year is the largest event in the Chinese calendar and this year will be our biggest event to date. Now in its 15th year the Birmingham celebrations have grown in popularity, with the 2016 festival attracting over 25,000 to Chinatown and Southside. As well as traditional lion dancers, singers and martial artists, this year’s festival will also see the introduction of a new street food market, which will be serving up a range of Far Eastern delicacies, as well as a fun fair. These new additions wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Southside community and those further afield. Last year Birmingham City Council announced that it would be unable to fund the festival due to ongoing budget cuts. This news hasn’t dampened spirits though and the entire community has come together to support and raise the funds needed to put on this spectacular festival. I’d like to take a moment to thank members of the Chinese Festival Committee who have gone beyond the call of duty to raise funds, our partners Southside BID and The Arcadian and all those who have donated in some form. Without your continued support we would not be able to host such a fantastic event. On behalf of the Chinese Festival Committee we hope that you enjoy the festivities. Happy Chinese New Year, Kung Hei Fat Choy 春节快乐,恭喜发财 James Wong 黃展邦 Chair of the Chinese Festival Committee – Birmingham

Common questions asked about Chinese New Year Why don’t the Chinese just celebrate the New Year on 1st January? Why does it change every year? The Chinese use the Lunar calendar for their festivals and is based on the time the moon takes to orbit the Earth. (Western calendar is based on the time it takes for the Earth to orbit the Sun.) The first day of each Chinese year will always fall sometime between 21st January and 21st February.
How long does the Chinese New Year celebration last? The festivities last for 15 days and end on the full moon (also known as the lantern festival). Chinese New Year celebration, also known as the “Spring Festival” or the “Lunar New Year” is the most important festival within the Chinese culture.
Why is it called the Spring Festival? Chinese New Year usually falls within 15 days from the ‘Start of Spring’ (4th February in the Western Calendar) to distinguish from it “international” New Year (1st January), that’s why the Chinese call it the ‘Spring Festival’.
Why is there an animal associated with each different year? Similar to the western star signs, the Chinese have their own Chinese Zodiac. Each lunar year is related to a zodiac animal and recurs on a 12 year cycle.
Why do the Chinese set off firecrackers and have lion/dragon dances? it was believed that the explosive sounds and the pungent smell of firecrackers together with lion/dragon dance will scare away evil spirits, who cause bad luck.

Chinese New Year Zodiac Origin Once upon a time, the Jade Emperor ordered all the animals to have a race to determine who shall be the guards to the heavenly gate. On his birthday, he told the animals there will a race across the river and the order they finish will determine the order they have in the Zodiac. All the animals were very excited and lined up on the river bank early. The rat was worried because of the strong current in the river and ask the ox if he would carry him across the river. The kind-hearted ox did not mind at all. He was strong and soon took the lead in the race. After crossing it, the ox ran towards the Jade Emperor. Suddenly, the rat jumped off the ox’s head and rushed to the feet of the Jade Emperor. He won the race. The poor ox was tricked into second place followed by the exhausted tiger. Next to finish was the rabbit. He didn’t swim at all! Instead he hopped across some stepping stones and floating logs which carried him on to the shore. The dragon finished next. He could have won the race easily as he can fly. Instead, he stopped on the way to make some rain for the crops and the local people. He also helped the rabbit by blowing the logs across the river. Next to cross the river was the horse. As he was about to reach the finishing line, the sneaky snake, who was wrapped around the horse’s hooves, jumped out and finish before him. The sheep, monkey and the rooster worked together as they found a raft and finished shortly after the horse. The dog also made it. He was a good swimmer but decided to have a bath as the water was so clean and refreshing. The pig was last to arrive. He was then named the final member of the zodiac.

Roosters are hard workers, shrewd and definite in decision making, often speaking their minds. Because of this, you tend to seem boastful to others. You are a dreamer, flashy dresser and extravagant to an extreme. Born under this sign you should be happy as a restaurant owner, publicist, soldier or world traveller. The Dog will never let you down. Born under this sign you are honest, and faithful to those you love. You are plagued by constant worry, a sharp tongue and a tendency to be a fault finder. You would make an excellent businessman, activist, teacher or secret agent. You are a splendid companion, an intellectual with a very strong need to set difficult goals. You are sincere, tolerant, and honest. By expecting the same from others, you are also incredibly naive. Your quest for material goods could be your downfall. You would be best in the arts as an entertainer or possibly a lawyer. You are imaginative, charming and truly generous to the person you love. However, you have a tendency to be quick-tempered and overly critical. You are also inclined to be somewhat of an opportunist. Born under this sign, you should be happy in sales or as a writer, critic or publicist.
A born leader, you inspire confidence from all around you. You are conservative, methodical and good with your hands. Guard against being chauvinistic and always demanding your own way. The Ox would be successful as a skilled surgeon, general or hairdresser You are sensitive, emotional and capable of great love. However, you have a tendency to get carried away and be stubborn about what you think is right; often seen as a "hothead" or rebel. Your sign shows you would be excellent as a boss, explorer, race car driver or matador.

Rabbits are selfless, neat, tidy and get along well with their brothers and sisters. Rabbits lead the good life and are the most fortunate of all animals. Rabbits live by the Golden Rule and wouldn't think of breaking it. You are well suited as a banker, lawyer, interior designer or video-game player. Full of vitality and enthusiasm, the Dragon is a popular individual even with the reputation of being foolhardy and a "big mouth" at times. You are intelligent, gifted and a perfectionist but these qualities make you unduly demanding on others. You would be well-suited to be an artist, priest or politician

Put aside your pessimism and worry and try to be less dependent on material comforts. You would be best as an actor, gardener or beachcomber.
You are very intelligent and have a very clever wit. Because of your extraordinary nature and magnetic personality, you are always well-liked. The Monkey however, must guard against begin an opportunist and distrustful of other people. Your sign promises success in any field you try. 17
