Chinese New Year is the largest event in the Chinese calendar and this year will be our biggest event to date. 春节是华人一年中最大的节日，而今年的华人新春庆典也将是我们举 办的规模最大的一次活动。 Now in its 14th year the Birmingham celebrations have grown in popularity, with the 2015 festival attracting over 20,000 to Chinatown and Southside. Last year Birmingham City Council announced that it would be unable to fund the festival due to ongoing budget cuts. Chinatown Foo Dogs 中国城石狮 Using money raised by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee and the Institute of Oriental Business (IOB), two Foo Dogs will be soon erected in Chinatown. Traditionally known in Chinese as Shi, the Foo Dog is actually a guardian lion which can often be found in front of Chinese Imperial palaces, tombs, temples and government offices and were believed to have powerful and mythic protective benefits. The History of Chinese New Year 春节的来历 Chinese New Year is the most important of the holidays for the Chinese. 春节对于华人来说是最重要的节日 Although its exact beginnings are unclear, the celebrations are said to have been first held during the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC – 1122 BC). Whereas many countries base their year on the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar which takes into consideration the phases of the moon. A lunar month is around two days shorter than a solar month. Every few years an extra month is added which is the reason why Chinese New Year is celebrated on a different date each year. 虽然春节确切的开端已经无从考究，但传说第一次春节是在商朝（公元 前1766-1122年）时期开始庆祝的。虽然许多国家的新年都是根据阳历 来确定的，春节却是根据观测月亮相位的农历来确定的新年的日期。 农历的每个月要比阳历月份大约少两天，所以每隔几年，就会加进一 个额外的月份，这也就是为什么每年春节会在不同阳历日期的原因。 Celebrations usually last for around 15 days. During this time people will often travel across the globe to spend time with their families and loved ones and have a special meal on New Year’s Eve. This dinner will often consist of dumplings and fish, which signify prosperity. Money in red envelopes is often given to young children as a symbol of a lucky and long life. Red is the lucky colour of the Chinese The date of the CNY is dependant on the Lunar calendar 3. It’s tradition for elders/married couples to give money in lucky red packets called “Lai See” 4. Chinese families will “Spring clean” before CNY 5. The Chinese would not cut their hair during CNY 6. CNY is also known as the “Spring festival” and this last 15 days 7. The burning of the firecracker is believed to scare away evil spirits that’s associated with bad fortune 8. The correct name for CNY is “Lunar New Year”. Many Asian countries outside China also celebrate this day 9. There are lots of greetings to say during CNY. The most common is “Kung Hei Fat Choy” which means “Wishing you prosperity” 10. One of the most popular dishes of Chinese New Year is Lobster - the literal Chinese translation of lobster is “Dragon Prawn” 11. The Chinese avoid getting angry over CNY as they fear that would bring bad luck for the forthcoming year 12. another 30 seconds (or when crisp). Drain oil and set aside on a plate. Heat 1 tablespoon oil over a high heat. Add chicken pieces and pan fry until very light golden brown but not yet cooked through. Drain and set aside. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil, pan fry garlic for a few seconds then add chicken, peppers, onion, spring onion and chilli and stir fry for 30 seconds. Add 1 teaspoon rice wine, chicken stock and 1 tablespoon black bean sauce. Bring this to the boil. Add ½ teaspoon of sugar, ½ teaspoon of salt, ½ tablespoon of oyster sauce and ½ teaspoon of ground pepper. Mix cornflour with ¼ cup of cold water, add to sauce to thicken (you won’t need the whole amount). To finish add 1 teaspoon of dark soy sauce. Place stir fry over crispy noodles and serve.
