Over 75,000 spectators turned out to support the parade through the city centre and tens of thousands of party revellers enjoyed the festival in Southside throughout the two days.

Pride festival that followed.

The event this year featured its biggest ever line-up, including headliners Erasure’s Andy Bell, Lisa Stansfield, Katy B, Lawson, Fleur East, DJ Fresh and MNEK, together with over 100 performers and DJs. Lawrence Barton, Birmingham Pride Festival Director, commented: “This year’s festival has been undoubtedly our most successful in its 20-year history. We were amazed by the tens of thousands of spectators who turned out to support our ‘Generation of Pride’ themed parade, in addition to all the visitors to the two-day

“We are indebted to Southside BID, West Midlands Police and the security teams deployed, who collectively ensured it was such a safe and happy Pride for everyone to enjoy. “Everyone who got involved worked tirelessly to ensure that this year’s festival went without a hitch. We’re all immensely proud of everyone who took part.”

“Our aim was to ensure a peaceful, enjoyable event for everyone at the festival and we believe that this was achieved.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that, despite large crowds partying into the early hours on both nights, there were only a handful of drug and alcohol related incidents. West Midlands Police Inspector Gareth Morris, from Birmingham city centre, commented: “It’s fantastic to have

been able to police and take part in an event that is so positive for the LGBT community and for the city of Birmingham.

“With the volume of people attending over the weekend with tens of thousands of people watching the parade this was a very successful, trouble free event with a relatively low level of arrests; which were led by our proactive plain clothed officers.”

Originally from Northamptonshire having not always lived in a City, I first discovered independence in vibrant and busy Birmingham. My hospitality career started in an 800 bedroom hotel, and gaining experience in various other roles in branded hotels over the last 9 years. Serviced apartments are becoming a more competitive and attractive offer within the industry.

How has your business contributed to the area? We have built relationships with some local businesses within Southside and encourage working together, we assist with accommodation needs making things really easy so no more hotel headaches that others often experience. In return we have a leaflet stand in which we can help advertise events running in Southside, venues and restaurants who wish to work promote their businesses with us. What do you think of the continuing efforts to regenerate Southside? I believe all efforts are very positive. The location of Southside is really popular as it is with popular attractions on our doorstep such as Birmingham Hippodrome, The Glee Club, The Old Rep Theatre, and BOM. However more and more visitors will hear about improvement plans and new events which we are sure will prove demand, and to become an even better place to stay or even relocate to. What is the best thing about Southside? The location of Southside and the large selection of restaurants and entertainment venues definitely help put Southside on the map! The support teams of Southside really play a big part in helping businesses to work together, promoting events to outsiders helping bring in visitors, and not forgetting the friendly street wardens who are always helpful and genuinely interested in the area and its businesses. What advice would you give someone wishing to start a business in the area? Southside is a popular and vibrant area to be, with lots of reasons for visitors. With the regeneration plans ongoing, this can only be more positive to any business looking to locate to this area. How do you spend your spare time? Socialising meeting up with friends and family. I enjoy nights at the cinema, or out for dinner in Southside especially with the great choice of many restaurants to choose from! Also, I like to arrange weekend trips away on occasion.
