BID 2!
Yes it’s almost here! We have had an amazing four years here in BID Southside and our list of achievements is more than we ever dreamed we could achieve in such a short time, which is largely due to the support we have had from our amazing Southside businesses, big and small. NOw this is the final year of the first ever Southside BID and now you get the chance to shape the plans for BID 2 and in October vote on whether you want the BID to continue. Remember you decide. If the majority of businesses vote yes to a second BID, then in 2016, Southside will start again with a fresh mandate from businesses to continue to deliver services which benefit our businesses and customers. If the majority of Southside businesses say no to a second BID, then Southside BID will wind up in March 2016 and all the extra services and benefits you get as part of the BID will cease. It’s up to you now.

Birmingham’s most vibrant and diverse district: embracing Hurst Street, The Arcadian, Chinatown and the Gay Village
Because you as a business are at the heart of everything we do here in Southside, we want you to be involved in developing the strategy for the second BID term. We want you to contribute and tell us what is important and with that in mind we are launching our BID 2 Consultation document on the 27th APril 2015. The new document will detail as briefly as possible, what we have achieved in the first five years, what we want to achieve in the next term and how much that will cost you and we want you to read it and feedback your views on whether this is what is important for Southside 2016-2021.
Part of the changes include the Big Papas Soulfood who have taken over the kitchens & are now serving delicious soul-food 7 days a week, lunchtime to evenings. If blackened shrimp, buttermilk chicken and mac n cheese are your thing, get yourself down there.

SOUTHSIDE STREET WARDENS A NEW FOCUS FOR 2015 Our super successful Street Warden team has had a makeover for 2015 with brand new hours of operation and a new jacket which sets them apart. The wardens are now working seven days a week, starting a 7am - 6pm on MondaysWednesdays, 11am - 11pm on Thursdays Saturdays and 9am to 1pm on Sundays. This change of uniform and working hours is a direct result of feedback from our businesses who requested more warden presence during office hours and a distinct look so that they could easily distinguish between our friendly Southside Street Wardens and the less popular Traffic Wardens! Don’t forget Wardens can help if you have, a problem on street, trip hazard, faulty street lights, fly tipping, graffiti, hazardous waste, antisocial behaviour, aggressive begging, street drinkers, road closures, emergency evacuations, first aid, visitor way finding and information. Plus they are a jolly nice bunch and always ready for a chat! We hope you like their new look? If you would like a warden to visit your business or would like a copy of the rota which includes mobile phone contacts for all three dedicated Southside Street Wardens, email us on information@southsidebid.co.uk and request a business visit/copy to be sent to you.

BOM is a creative, collaborative workspace for art, technology and science. We have ten resident Fellows who have a mixture of backgrounds, artists, computer security experts, even a biochemist. We have a gallery hosting free exhibitions and events and we’re proud to have the amazing Urban Coffee Company on site as well as Fotofilia, an independent photography studio in our basement.
How did it all start?
BOM developed through a period of R&D supported by Arts Council England, the GRAIN Photography Hub Network and Coventry University. Lots of consultation with regional artists and stakeholders, partnership development, and of course the wrangling of a building renovation project.
What is your background?
I’m a curator, and have worked for galleries like Open Eye Gallery and FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) the UK’s leading centre for art and technology, and contributed to various festivals including Liverpool Biennial and Liverpool’s Capital of Culture year.
How has your business contributed to the area?
I think we’re helping to bring new life to a really interesting corner of Southside which has been somewhat neglected for the last ten years (or more). We’re playing an important role in cultural regeneration, in creating a space for experimentation and creativity in a very diverse and dynamic part of town.
What do you think of the continuing efforts to regenerate Southside? Awesome.
What is the best thing about Southside?
The eclectic cultural offer. Being a stone’s throw from the markets, the Electric Cinema, the Hippodrome, Gay Quarter and China Town to name a few. And festivals and pop up activity happening around the place.
The restaurant is believed to be the only one of its kind in Southside and the first for an import/export company which also has a shop selling live seafood to restaurants and home cooks in Manchester.
What advice would you give someone wishing to start a business in the area? Do it.
How do you spend your spare time?
Fighting superheros and going to the park with my two little boys.
