Gerald A. Smith Gerald A. Smith, age 73, of Eden, New York, died in his residence on Sunday, August 3, 2014. He was the son of the late Frederick and Vera (Sugg) Smith.

He was born in Alden, New York on July 3, 1941. He married his loving wife Anna E. Niedermeyr-Smith on June 30, 1989 in Eden, NY. Mr. Smith will be remembered for his love and knowledge of restoring classic cars. He enjoyed boating and fishing.

He loved to build and remodel houses.

He was the devoted husband of Anna E. (Nee: Niedermeyr); the loving brother of Donald (Vivian) Smith, Gloria (late Stanley) Giza, Richard (Mildred) Smith, Vera (late Richard) Maines, Eugene (late Catherine) Smith, Claudette (late Harvey) Girard, Gail (late Norman) Yost, Linda (Toby) Myers and late Shirley (late Norman) Riedel. Brother in law of John Niedermeyr, and Paul (Jane) Niedermeyr.

Uncle to many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday at Immaculate Conception Church.

Marie Rose Wuest (nee Rinaldo) Marie Rose Wuest (nee Rinaldo), formerly of North Collins, New York, age 93, died Wednesday, August 6, 2014 in Buffalo, New York. She was born July 24, 1921 in Brant New York; the daughter of the late Joseph (Antonina) Rinaldo.

She met and married her husband, the late Norbert Wuest.

Mrs. Wuest is survived by a sister Nancy Harkins. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Burial services were private and held in the Holy Spirit Cemetery, North Collins, NY. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

Jacobs Celebrates the “Season of Corn” in Eden County Clerk Jacobs Greets Parade-Goers Attending the 51st Eden Corn Festival and Parade. The annual festival is always held the first weekend in August on the American Legion Post 880 grounds in Eden.

There were plenty of “corny” things to do at the fairlike festival including a corn husking contest, corn chowder contest and the ever popular corn eating contest. The festival is non-profit in nature and directed at helping community groups raise funds for the coming year. Community groups such as the Boys and Girls Club of Eden, Eden Baseball Club, Eden PTA, Volunteer Fire Departments, and churches raise money by taking care of the parking lots and food stands within the festival. __________

Vacation Bible School at Immaculate Conception Church Immaculate Conception Church in Eden recently held its 9th Vacation Bible School. This year’s theme was Avalanche Ranch. It was a great success with over 60 children attending each day along with 30 high school volunteers and 24 adult staff members. As service projects, the campers created birthday cards for a six year old in Massachusetts with cancer, get well cards for a local boy undergoing brain surgery and, “Thinking of You” cards for the residents of local nursing homes. The week ended with a program put on by all the cowboys and cowgirls for their families and a luncheon. Father Walter Grabowski is the Pastor. __________

EDEN STAMPEDE HORSE SHOWS HELD AT STAGECOACH WEST What a busy summer for the Eden Stampede! We held two 4-H horse shows at Stagecoach West, one in June and another in July. The club members ran the shows by announcing, ribbon running, selling food and setting up and taking down patterns. We were really busy at the shows, but we had a lot of fun!

Congratulations to all of the riders! It was neat to see all of their hard work and practice pay off! All the horses and riders were amazing and so much fun to watch.

Orchard Park 11U Repeats as Section 1 Champs For the second year in a row, the Orchard Park 11U team won both the New York State Little League District 1 and Section 1 Championships. With the wins this week in Rochester, the team moves on to play in its second consecutive New York State Little League Championship Tournament. Only 6 teams across the entire state qualify for this honor.

After winning the District 1 Championship at Duerr Road several weeks ago, the 11U team took to the road to PenďŹ eld, New York to play in the semi-ďŹ nals against Auburn on Wednesday, July 16th. Not unfamiliar foes, the Orchard Park 10U team defeated the Auburn 10U team to advance towards the State Championship last year. This year’s Auburn 11U team had 9 players returning from last year’s team, while Orchard Park had 11 players returning.

For the second year in a row, Orchard Park knocked out Auburn, by a ďŹ nal score of 12-1. Carson SenďŹ eld earned the win on the mound pitching 3 innings, only giving up 1 run and striking out ďŹ ve. In the 4th inning, with the score 7-0, Auburn lead o with an HR and got the next two batters on base. With no outs and two men on base, Jake Janus entered the game as a relief pitcher and struck out the next three batters (batters 4, 5 and 6) to snu out any Auburn hopes.

Connor Phalon closed out the game, pitching the 5th inning and striking out 2. With the last strikeout, the 10-run mercy rule ended the game and sent the Orchard Park team to their second consecutive District 1 Championship game. Having a huge game for Orchard Park was James Velasquez, who, on his birthday, made a diving catch in the 2nd inning and then hit a 3 run HR in the 3rd inning to put the team up for good. Kyle Kuszewski iced the game by hitting an opposite ďŹ eld grand slam in the top of the 5th inning. Blake Breidenstein had two hits in the game, as well.

After defeating Auburn on Wednesday, Orchard Park moved on to the Section 1 ďŹ nals on Thursday against the host team, PenďŹ eld. In a tight game, Orchard Park edged PenďŹ eld 9-7, ensuring a repeat Section 1 Championship (10U last year and 11U this year). Eleven of the 14 boys on the team played on both championship teams.

Starting pitcher Kyle Kuszewski got the win on the mound as he pitched 3 innings and only allowed 2 runs. Helping his own cause, Kuszewski hit his 2nd home run in as many days, drilling a 3 run HR in the ďŹ rst inning. Orchard Park scored 8

Eligible Women Invited to Free Health Screenings at Gowanda Urgent Care in August To help Erie County women without health insurance obtain necessary breast care services, TLC Health Network and the Erie County Cancer Services program are sponsoring a Free Breast Cancer Screening on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center, 34 Commercial St. The event, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will include free clinical breast exams, mammograms and health information for participants. Registration is currently under way.

The Free Breast Cancer Screening is open to all women, age 40 or older, who do not have health insurance and have not had a mammogram in the past year. Through the Erie County Cancer Services Program, eligible participants may also qualify for free follow-up testing and treatment, if needed. “We are so proud to be long time partners with the Cancer Services program and to be able to oer these invaluable screenings to women of our community free of charge. Both breast and cervical cancer are very treatable if detected early,â€? said Lauralee Sprague, Nurse Practitioner at the Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center. “Everyone has the right to access high quality health care regardless of their ďŹ nancial situation or insurance status. This is one way we can improve access to those services.â€? In addition, on Friday, Aug. 22, individuals who qualify can also obtain free pap/pelvic screenings.

A lack of health insurance should not prevent women from getting this vital care.� Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 40-55. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight American women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
