After you scoop out and carve your pumpkin, dip it in a container of bleach and water (use a 1 tsp; 1 gal. mix). The bleach will kill bacteria and help your pumpkin stay fresh longer. Once completely dry, (drain upside down), add 2 tbsp of vinegar and 1 tsp. of lemon juice to a quart of water. Brush this solution onto your pumpkin to keep it looking fresh for weeks!

APPLE HARVEST, THEN & NOW

Apples are renowned for their nutritional value, a right of passage into the Fall of the year and just plain good to taste. The Town of Brant, NY has long been known as one of the top agricultural production farmlands. Put them together and you will find one of the nicest little apple farms in the area. Brant Apple Farm, located just east of the center of Brant on Route 249 has been in fruit production for decades. Several U- Pick apple customers return annually for their favorite apples. With 20 varieties to choose from there is surely one to please your palate. Senior customers remember the owners over the years: Fred Winters, Charlie Rider, Phil Bence and currently Jack and Evie Mann. The current owners lovingly care for over 200 trees on their seven acre farm. In addition to fruit, the Manns, retired educators, have expanded the farm into a working classroom. Students from surrounding areas experience hands on learning about fruit production, farm animals, caring for the land and the environment. Learn more about this little gem by visiting www. brantapplefarm.com. Whether you are here on a school tour with a hayride and petting zoo or come to pick mouth watering apples you will leave with a smile on your face and a tasty snack in your tummy . You can even pick a pumpkin or two while you visit. Pictured are scenes from yesteryear and now. __________

NORTH COLLINS SPIRIT WEEK AND HOMECOMING FESTIVITIES

The students at the North Collins Jr.-Sr. High School participated in a variety of events leading up to their Annual Homecoming Day on Saturday, September 28. During the week of September 23-September 27, the students and staff members celebrated ‘Merica Day, Green and Gold Day, Character Day, Retro Day, and Color War Day. A Pep Rally held on Friday culminated the Spirit Week festivities and included different grade levels (dressed in their assigned colors) competing against each other

The eighth grade class of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Hamburg recently went on a field trip to the Burchfield Penny Museum. The students are reading, The Diary of Anne Frank and the museum featured an exhibit called “Anne Frank – A History for Today.” At the exhibit, the students had the chance to walk through a timeline with the events of Frank’s life, along with a timeline of the history of World War II. Frank spent the last three years of her life hiding in an attic constantly in fear, but she never gave up hope. The eighth grade furthered their experience and understanding of the novel by going on a website called, “The Islands of Enlightenment.” They were able to virtually see where Frank had lived and the places she would have visited by using an avatar in a unique and creative virtual world. Pictured above are students Maura Casey (right) and Abby Anderson (left) walking through the Anne Frank exhibit at Burchfield Penny Museum. Article Written By Abby Anderson, 8th Grader

in activities such as a Tug of War, Egg Splash, Turkey Bowling, and Scooter Races. The High School band directed by Mrs. Ruth Davis entertained the crowd with some energetic musical selections as the cheerleading squad cheered them along. As part of the Pep Rally, student artists Carly Richardson and Beth Kibler created a ‘performance piece’. A 6’x6’ canvas was mounted on a stand, allowing the two artists to rotate the painting as they worked. The result was a truly fantastic eagle which they completed in just 7 minutes in front of the student body at the Pep Rally. The bright sunny skies on Saturday, September 28 drew a large crowd to the high school turf where both the Girls Varsity and Boys Varsity Soccer teams competed against visiting Cassadaga Valley. Both teams came away with wins. The high school victories were followed by the Annual Alumni Soccer Game organized by the Varsity Club. Twenty-five alumni players came out to play on the turf playing facility. It was even graduation years (Black Shirt Team) against odd graduation years (White Shirt Team) with the Black Team winning in a shoot-out after the actual game ended in a 2-2 tie. The Under the Stars Homecoming Dance for students in grades 9-12 culminated the week’s festivities. At the dance, the royal court was crowned. Selected by their peers were King Vincenzo Giancaspro, Queen Taren Mancuso, Prince Austin Winter, and Princess Morgan Parnitzke. Other students nominated for the royal court were Christian Gottschalk, Ben Schubert, Julia Seege, Destiny Kennedy, Chris Pulinski, Randy Brinkman, Arrika Bley, and Ashlynn Laukhuff. __________

EDEN-NORTH COLLINS PENNYSAVER

NOTICE TO THE RESIDENTS OF THE TOWN OF NORTH COLLINS PLEASE BE ADVISED that David Winter, North Collins Highway Superintendent, intends to improve the portion of Rocky Mountain Road extending 500 feet south from its intersection with New Oregon Road. That portion is currently a seasonal dead-end dirt road that serves only two properties, one owned by me, Susan Lankenau, and the other owned by Suzanne Pulk. Neither Suzanne Pulk nor I have requested that this portion of Rocky Mountain Road be improved; to the contrary, we have advised the Town of North Collins that we object to any such “improvements.” Why is this being done? Suzanne Pulk and I are in litigation with the Town and County seeking damages for tons of fill deposited by the Town and County on our respective properties, an abandoned portion of Rocky Mountain Road. You may remember this – the deposit occurred in the fall of 2010 as part of the repair of New Oregon Road. Mr. Berkowitz, an attorney who represents the Town of North Collins in the lawsuit, stated that the paving would occur unless Suzanne Pulk and I dropped our lawsuit. Do the residents of North Collins want a road paved for this reason? What is the cost? I don’t know the cost, but I bet it is not cheap. Sincerely, Susan Lankenau (716) 913-9838
