Dear Friends of Mackenzie Walsh, We are writing today seeking help for a family that is encountering mounting medical bills.

On Nov. 20, 2012, Mackenzie Walsh arrived in this world 13 weeks early. Just 12 inches long and weighing 1 lb. 4 oz., she spent six months in the NICU. Of that, 60 days was spent on a ventilator, which has lead to chronic lung disease.

Today she is on oxygen full time.

Mackenzie was also born with bilateral congenital glaucoma, a very rare birth defect. She had four surgeries while in the NICU; three eye surgeries and an inguinal hernia surgery. She does not have vision in her left eye. Her right eye has remained stable due to the eye drop medication she is on three times a day. She needs two more eye surgeries soon, only to be followed by a lifetime of more.

On Nov. 23, just days after her first birthday, friends and family will host a benefit at the American Legion Post 880 (2912 Legion Drive, Eden, behind Tim Horton’s) from 4-10 p.m.

The benefit will include a Chinese auction, raffles and more. Tickets are $25 per person, children 10 and under are free. Your ticket includes music, draft beer, pop and food from 6-8 p.m.

We are also seeking donations to help raise money for Mackenzie and her family.

Gift certificates/cards and gift baskets for the Chinese auction or a monetary donation are welcome.

All donations, big and small are greatly accepted and can be mailed or dropped off to 94 North Lane, Angola or can be picked up by calling Josh at 549-0060 or Kim at 392-8072. Donations can also be made at any Key Bank branch. Checks can be made payable to “Benefit for Mackenzie Walsh.” A communication is being made to all the Key Bank branches. We would be honored for any help you can give.

The son of late Gilbert F. and Bernice (Bragg) Brockman.

He married his loving wife Sharon A. (nee: Romano) on July 20, 1963 in Immaculate Conception Church, Eden.

He will be remembered as an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed the great outdoors. He had a special love for his garden.

Growing many vegetables, but was known for his tomatoes and his peppers.

Butch enjoyed playing sports, especially football and baseball. At one time he played semi pro baseball. He followed the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabers, and the Cincinnati Reds.

He had three special companions; three dogsEdie, Ace and Annabelle.

His favorite color was green. From the color of his home to the cloths he enjoyed wearing; all had to be green.

He worked as a mason with the Brockman Brother’s and retired from the West Seneca Developmental Center.

Butch was the devoted husband of Sharon A. (nee: Romano); the loving father of Brenda A. Atkinson and brother of Donald (late Marlene), late Gordon (Margaret), Clifford (Barbara) and Timothy Brockman, Sr. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass was celebrated Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church.

SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, located in the Village of Hamburg, recently concluded Red Ribbon Week.

The week began with students taking an oath to remain drug free. The week featured many fun festivities, which included visits from various law enforcement agencies.

Students learned about each responsibility the local police, DEA, CIA and FBI have. The school also received a visit from the Erie County Sheriff, where students learned how the agency uses the helicopter for search and rescue missions. SCS had a special visitor on Oct. 22nd. Mrs. Sharen Trembath came in and spoke in Miss Erica Aikin's grades 5 & 6 Science classes. Mrs. Trembath is the Coordinator for the Great Lakes Beach Sweep. She came in and spoke about water pollution / debri and how it finds it's way into our drinking water. The kids were asked the difference between organic and non-organic trash. She had brochures, books and they watched a short video on the plastic islands in our oceans. Mrs. Trembath's visit also fell on Pajama Day. This year for Halloween, Southtowns Catholic School students in Miss Lori McIntyre's Grade 3 class did something a little different. They were invited to Trick or Treat at South Pointe Senior Apartments in Hamburg. The students went trick or treating throughout the building and when they were finished, they met the residents in the community room where the kids read Halloween books.

LAWTONS PROGRESSORS 4-H CLUB BUSINESS MEETING

593” of hair was collected as students, faculty and staff at Immaculata Academy joined together to donate 10 inches or more of their hair to Locks of Love on October 17th. The non-profit organization collects hair donations to create and provide hairpieces for young people with medical hair loss.

Character Club, a campus group associated with The Character Club of Western New York, sponsored the event. Hamburg hair stylists Laura Carestio from Design Salon and Spa, Jennifer Mottola and Alesia Crawford from Donovan & Co., and Jill Green from Jill’s New Beginning Hair set-up shop in the Academy lobby, where the girls donated their hair as their supportive peers encouraged them. There was so much encouragement going on in fact, that in the end 26 students, 1 faculty, and 1 staff member ended up getting cuts, with only 16 students originally signed up. A male teacher also collected donations as he had his entire head shaved.

To complete the event, the school body gathered in the auditorium for a donation ceremony, where before pictures were shown and new hairdo reveals were made.

Junior Ally Dybala made and sold bracelets to help raise money towards the cause and students, faculty, and staff donated $1 to dress down and wear pink or purple (cancer awareness colors). In the end over $400 was raised along with the hair donations, which goes toward defraying the cost of producing the hairpieces.

“It’s such a warm feeling to see everyone come together and participate in so many different ways to help others.

It’s on days like these that we know our Franciscan mission is alive and well in the halls of Immaculata Academy,” commented Principal Jill Monaco.

Form rounded spoonfuls of dough around each peanut butter cup.

Enclose entirely. Place 2 inches apart on baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until cookies are browned. Remove immediately to cooling rack. Com­ bine shortening, chocolate chips and peanut butter in microwave-safe measuring cup. Microwave 1 minute, stir, and repeat until smooth. Dip cookie tops in choc­ olate and let stand until chocolate is set.

This was our retirement home. Now it will lay empty. Our home is not livable due to a sewer problem caused by an inept contractor hired by the village government to do a water line installation on Vermont St. This contractor cut our sewer lateral leading to the main sewer line. The contractor refuses to repair his shotty work, and the village government stands with him and against us. When will the Mayor stand up to the plate and rectify this matter? We need resolution now!!
