BLUEBIRD NESTING BOXES MADE

On Saturday, November 16th, 17 people, 9 kids, including 3 Boy Scouts and 8 adults, made 38 bluebird nesting boxes at the 8th annual workshop. A profound “thank you” to Ken Foltyniak for cutting out the pieces and donating the wood. Thanks also to Mike Bolo for his guidance in constructing them, Sue Pratt and Gordon Robinson.

Below is a typical blubird nesting timetable for this area: March 15th March 30th April 22nd April 29th May 18th May 21st June 6th June 20th

- Bluebirds sighted in the area. - Female accepts box - bits of straw in box. - Female building next. - 5 blue eggs (usually one a day for 5 days). - Young hatching, female carries away shells and fecal sacs. - Female continues brooding the young both adults feed young from dawn to dusk. - Young bluebirds have left the nest - clean out the box. - Female begins building new nest and process is repeated.

JACK M. SMITH Jack M. Smith passed November 14, 2013 at his home on Jekyll Island, GA. Jack also maintained a residence in Eden, NY, which he considered his hometown. He was 81. Jack Smith lived a life of many dimensions. First and foremost, from the day he married on August 28, 1954 Jack was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary Ellen Brindley. Growing up as a foster child with the Leo Brockman Family of North Collins , Jack treasured his role as father to his five children, James “Brad” Smith, Mary Elise “Mimi” Smith, John (Kathleen Schreiber) Smith, Anita “Winkie” Smith and Jaclyn “Jackie” Smith and grandfather to his two granddaughters, Jena and Elizabeth “Lizzie”. Yet while Jack’s sense of dedication began with his family, it continued far beyond, encompassing a successful career and a legacy of community service in his hometown of Eden. Jack obtained his New York State Casualty and Life Insurance License in 1954. In January of the following year he opened an office in Eden, working as a Nationwide Insurance Agent. From that point Jack built a broad client base of satisfied customers, providing a down-home, personal style of service. He regularly met with his clients in their homes, discussing not only their insurance needs, but their life issues and concerns as well. His professional expertise combined with his caring nature made Jack more like a family friend than an insurance agent. In 1975, Jack opened his own insurance company, proudly naming it, Eden Agency. In time, Jack acquired five other agencies and opened a second loca-

tion in Springville. Yet he never lost sight of the personal touch that made him so successful. During these busy years, Jack also dedicated himself to his community and to many worthy causes. As a local businessman Jack joined the Eden Chamber of Commerce in 1958, remaining a member for 42 years. Many of those years Jack took a leadership role including four terms as chamber president. He was particularly proud of the fact that his daughter, Jackie also served as a President of the Eden Chamber, making them the only father and daughter to so serve. Through Jack’s involvement with the Eden Chamber he became an integral part of the organizing committee of the Eden Corn Festival. From those early corn fest days in 1962 through to this year’s 50th anniversary celebration, Jack Smith became a symbol for the WNY summer tradition as he served as general chairman, parade chairman and all-around “go-to” corn master. Yet it was in his role as softball chairman that Jack left an ever-lasting mark on the corn fest and the WNY softball community as well. As he would proudly proclaim, the corn festival softball tournament became a premiere event for teams far beyond the WNY Region---a fact that was evidenced by Jack’s 1994 induction into the WNY Softball Hall of Fame. In between family, business and community, Jack always made time for organizations close to his heart. He was a lifetime trustee of Eden’s Immaculate Conception Church, he served 13 years on the Lakeshore Community Hospital Board of Trustees—one as President, and he undertook chairmanships of the building fund for the Eden Library and renovation fund drive for Immaculate Conception Church. When their daughter was diagnosed with kidney problems, Jack and Mary Ellen joined the WNY Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation. To no one’s surprise Jack volunteered to serve on the

EDEN-NORTH COLLINS PENNYSAVER

foundation board and was elected President several times. In his spare time, Jack served as Chair of the Eden High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was honored as an inductee in 1995. He also coached boys and girls softball teams and served as treasurer of a boy’s hockey league In 1997, Jack Smith announced that he was retiring from the insurance business. He said he always thought that he would rather, “wear out than rust out”, but finally realized that “both happen at once”, so he deemed it time. In Jack’s world, retirement meant continued involvement with his church, the corn fest, the chamber and any other worthy causes that might need his help. It also meant spending more time with Mary Ellen and his five children. They began dividing their time between Eden and a retirement home in Jekyll Island, Georgia. In 2011, Jack lost his bride of 57 years when Mary Ellen passed on April 28. From that point Jack made his children and grandchildren the focus of his life, while still leaving time for his beloved Eden Community and the people who had come to know and love him. Jack’s passing leaves an unfillable void in the Eden Community that he so proudly called home. Viewing will take place at Wentland Funeral Home 10634 Main St, North Collins, NY 14111 Sunday 1-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10am at Immaculate Conception Church, 8791 South Main St. Eden. _______

COLUMN BY CHRISTINA M. ABT In 1995 I bought a house in Eden. At the time I didn’t know anyone in the town, but it really didn’t matter. What mattered was that I knew and loved the house, as I had tried to buy it once before in 1979 and had dreamed of living there ever since. When I met with the bank to secure a mortgage I asked them about finding an insurance agent for my valued home. They suggested Jack Smith, owner of the Eden Agency. I called Jack and inquired about setting up an insurance policy. He assured me he’d be happy to come up to the house and meet so that we could talk. “Talk?” I thought to myself. “What do we have to talk about? I just need to make sure that my house is properly insured.” As I soon learned, Jack Smith was not simply an insurance agent. He was a kindly neighbor, an involved citizen and a great booster of all things “Eden”. However, most essentially Jack Smith was a people person who loved to visit with friends, old and new--- and everyone he met became his friend. From that first meeting our friendship flourished, based on our shared sense of community service. Actually as I look back on our beginnings, Jack would seek me out and casually begin a conversation about some cause or event that he was supporting. The next thing I knew I was working on it, or writing about it. Jack was good that way. He could entice you to become involved while making you believe that it was your own dedication motivating your interest Over the years Jack and I collaborated on a number of special projects for the Eden Chamber, the Eden Boys and Girls Club and his most favored town event, the Eden Corn Festival. I will never forget the summer that Jack asked me to, “…write a little something about the Corn Festival’s 40th anniversary.” We agreed to meet at a local restaurant so that I could interview him and get the story just as he wanted it told. When I arrived, Jack was there with all 40 programs from the past Corn Festivals laid out for my inspection. And believe me when I tell you, we reviewed every single page. Jack and I furthered our friendship through Sunday dinners at my home. One Sunday each month family and friends gather together and connect around my dining room table. Everyone brings a dish to pass and stories to share. Jack attended only once a year, always in October before he headed south to Jekyll Island for the winter. Yet once every twelve months was enough as, in his inimitable style, Jack made the gathering extra special by bringing the nucleus of an early Thanksgiving dinner, He cooked turkey and stuffing while I made mashed potatoes and gravy. The rest of my guests filled in with side dishes and desserts. It became the highlight of our monthly dinners and a valued tradition for all who looked forward to “Jack’s Thanksgiving”. With Jack’s recent passing, I found myself thinking back on these shared memories and so much more that defined this special man in my life. And then it came to me, the moment when Jack touched my heart in the most unforgettable way. It was 1997. Jack declared that it was time to retire from the insurance business. Yet true to his nature, on his final day of business Jack was out on the road, calling on clients who had come to value him as an insurance agent and a friend. I was the last one of those clients on Jack’s list that day. As in that very first time we met, I wondered why he was coming to my home. We reviewed my insurance policy each year at renewal time. What more needed to be done? As Jack sat down at my kitchen table and opened my client file he paused, looked at me with gentle tears welling in his eyes and told me that I was the last client that he would ever call on. He continued that he had scheduled it that way because he wanted to be sure that I would be ok in my house that I loved so much. As always, a wonderful insurance agent ….and a forever friend. __________

This past weekend at the Glens Falls, New York Civic Center Arena, the Eden Girls Volleyball team capped another stellar season by winning its 11th State Championship, this time in Class C with a 3-0 win over Millbrook from Section 9. After a successful regular season, during which the team defeated area big school powers Lancaster, Orchard Park, Sweet Home, and Frontier, and won the Frontier Invitational Tournament, the Lady Raiders stormed through 10 separate playoff matches without dropping a single set on their way to a record 5th consecutive title, dating back to 2009 when the Raiders defeated powerhouse Hendrick Hudson in the Class B title match. Many of the players on that undefeated 2009 team now star for NCAA Division I programs like Georgia, Penn State, Kent State, Stony Brook, and Gardner-Webb University. The present team is driven by its three senior captains (Heather Holscher, Taylor Mitchell, and Lainy Pierce), two of whom received scholarships to play NCAA volleyball next year--Holscher will play at Daemen College and Pierce will join her sister at Penn State. Both were named to the State Championships All Tourney team with Pierce named Tournament MVP. Eden has many talented players returning next year, however, including junior outside hitter Kailey Ballou and her sophomore sister, middle blocker Meghan Ballou. Megan was also named to the State Tourney All Tourney team. Junior middle Brianna Tutuska is another returning starter, as are a trio of talented freshmen: OH Sam Burgio, libero Molly Breier, and OH/ Setter Alyssa Durski. Other members of the team include juniors Claire Czjaka, Carly Nasca, and Lindsay Gearhart. __________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC STUDIES THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Students in Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 5 Science class got the opportunity to see real organs. Grade 5 student Eric Bowman brought in a heart, liver, and small intestines of a calf and Zack Barney brought in a heart (and legs) from a deer. The kids just finished a chapter on circulatory system and it was a perfect ending. They used gloves to touch the organs and talked about what they could see, feel, smell. Then discussed about what the organs do (functions) etc. The kids then drew diagrams of what they were looking at. Pictured: Zack Barney, Delaney Campbell, Miss Aikin & TJ Aikin __________

NYSEG AND RG&E WARN PUBLIC TO BEWARE OF 'GREEN DOT MONEYPAK CARD' SCAM

NYSEG and RG&E, subsidiaries of Iberdrola USA, are warning customers about callers who say they represent NYSEG or RG&E and are calling about billing matters. Some customers have been contacted and warned that to avoid having their service shutoff they should purchase a “Green Dot MoneyPak Card” and contact the caller with the card information. NYSEG and RG&E offer these tips to keep account information secure: NYSEG and RG&E will not call customers for payment if an account is in good standing. Customers who need to make an urgent pay- ment should do so by calling NYSEG directly at 1-800-600-2275 to ensure that their account is properly credited. RG&E customers should call 1-800-743-2110. Customers who have any questions about a call they have received for an overdue payment are like wise urged to contact NYSEG at 1-800-572-1111; RG&E at 1-800-743-2110. __________
