As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide

Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse, at gift giving time, that nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes, there is!

It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut and their dogs need one too! How about

gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It’s appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn’t appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

AUTHOR DIANE SMITH VISITS SCS

Southtowns Catholic School seventh and eighth grade students were a captivated audience when author Diane Smith came to visit our classroom. It was enlightening for them to hear about how much time, effort and love goes into the writing of a book. Her book is called "The Window to Earth". It is a children's book about the love that shines through the heavens into your heart as you sleep. In the spring, the students will read her novel, The Catacombs. Mrs. Smith grew up in Angola. Now she lives in Mountain Lakes, NJ with her husband and two boys.

ROBERT WILLIAM LOFTUS, SR. Services to be announced for Robert William Loftus, Sr., of Eden, NY, who passed away on November 7, 2012. He was the loving companion, partner, friend and soulmate to Joyce Schreiber for over 24 years; father of Robert William Jr., Kathleen Ann (John) Greeley, and Susan Marie; “Papa” of Kristin Lea (Marty) Horan, Daniel Edward Gwitt, and Jessica Anding; great-grandfather of Austin William Horan; preceded in death by his sister Irene V. (Gordon) Rieppel, and his parents, Marie (Murdock) and William Loftus; cherished “Poppa Bob” of 5 step-children and 10 step-grandchildren.

Robert was Staff Sergeant US Air Force from 19501954 and played on the Special Services Baseball Team in Lackland, TX. He was also a letter carrier for the US Post Office for 24 years, past member of Amherst Gaelic League, past member of Gowanda Country Club, and a participant in the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. Bob was known as an avid golfer and he loved the NY Yankees since his childhood. _______ LUCIA EGNER A Funeral was held at Loomis Chapel, Hamburg for Lucia Egner, resident of Eden Heights, formerly of Hamburg and Buffalo, who died November 23, 2012. NORTH COLLINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTA HOSTED FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

Friday November 9th, North Collins Elementary School PTA hosted its’ first Family Movie Night of the Year. Over 90 children and their parents or grandparents joined us in the cafetorium for a showing of The Lorax.

Children were encouraged to wear pajamas, bring pillows and blankets so they could enjoy the movie in a “slumber party” atmosphere. Students watched the movie and were treated to popcorn, juice pouches and bottles of water. At the conclusion of the event, PTA raffled off two copies of the movie. The lucky winners were: Kayla Dechow and Isabelle Wroblewski.

In keeping with the Lorax’s “green” theme, our PTA sponsored a one-time shoe recycling event. Families donated old shoes and sneakers to be recycled into plastic decking and furniture through Terracycle.

Jen Hanley was our super helper at the snack table! Everyone had a great time! The children were incredibly well behaved. _________
