PAUL L. SCHAEFER Paul L. Schaefer, age 66, of Eden, New York died Sunday, December 1, 2013 unexpectedly in his home. He was born December 12, 1946. He was the son of the late Leonard and Catherine Schaefer. Paul married his loving wife Carolynn S. Filipiak on July 4, 1969 at St. Vincent de Paul in Springbrook, NY. That same year Paul started his teaching career at Lakeshore Central School in the Industrial Arts Department. He also taught Driver Education for many years. After 32 years of service and touching many students, Paul retired from teaching in 2001. Also in 1969 Paul started his own photo company; Hilltop Photo. Until his retirement from the photo industry in 2008, Paul took many wedding photos in addition to family portraits. He was a master at his trade. He loved people and had a unique ability to bring out a smile in everyone he photographed. After many years of his wife Carolynn working from their family home as a seamstress, they decided it was time to expand and move into a bigger and more accessible location. In 1998 the Eden Creative Sewing Center was opened on North Main Street in Eden, New York. They worked side by side growing the business into what it is today- a haven for women to learn, and share common interests with others while momentarily escaping the many challenges of life as well as experience fun and God’s healing touch. Paul will be remembered for his love of children, his positive outlook on everything, his genuine compassion for others and his ability to always be joking around. His family will remember his enjoyment of starting new projects.

Paul is predeceased by his parents Leonard and Catherine Schaefer. He is survived by his wife, Carolynn, three sons; Todd (Kathryn), Scott (Colleen) and Michael (Jescie) Schaefer. He is also survived by one brother, Neil (JoAnn) Schaefer, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial followed at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Eden, NY. Memorials may be made in Paul’s memory to the Dominican Nuns of Perpetual Rosary. 335 Doat St. Buffalo, NY 14211,his go to place for prayers for anyone whom he felt was in need. Words of sympathy may be left on www.LaingFuneralHome.com ___________ JOSEPHINE MARDINO (nee Noto) Josephine Mardino (nee Noto) of North Collins, passed November 29, 2013 at the age of 85. NYSEG AND RG&E OFFER SAFETY AND ENERGY-SAVING TIPS FOR HOLIDAY LIGHTING

Safety: • Use only those lights and extension cords approved by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) or another recognized testing organization. • Carefully inspect light cords, plugs and receptacles for worn or frayed insulation and loose connections. Throw away damaged items. • Don’t overload electrical circuits. Follow the directions on cord labels regarding connecting strings of lights and extension cords. • Make sure the cords are out of the way so that nobody trips over them. Keep wires away from toddlers. • Extension cords and lights used outdoors should be rated for outdoor use. Use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) on outdoor outlets. • Look Up … Look Out! While decorating outside, never raise ladders, poles or other extended objects into or near power lines. If you are decorating an outside tree, check to make sure that its limbs aren’t near power lines or service wires. Remember that no power line is safe to touch, ever. • If you use candles, keep them within your sight and away from children, pets and anything that could catch fire. • Push wires toward the center of the tree, and clip them securely to the branches. • Never use electric lights on metallic trees. • Avoid using plastic trees unless they’re flame resistant. • Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. • If you have a real tree, keep it fresh. Before you put the tree in its stand, cut its base at a 45-degree angle so it can absorb water. (The average tree can consume between a quart and a gallon of water a day.) Decorate the tree with miniature lights – they produce much less heat and reduce the drying effect on the tree. Remove the tree promptly after the holidays or when it becomes dry. Energy Efficiency: • Purchase new, energy-efficient lights. Miniature bulbs use less energy than larger bulbs. • Use light emitting diodes (LEDs), small light sources that are illuminated by the movement of electrons through a semiconductor material. LEDs are exceptionally energy efficient when producing individual colors, many using up to 90% less energy than an incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light. For example, the amount of electricity consumed by just one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs (two 24-foot strings). • Use a programmable timer to turn lighting displays on and off; unplug lights when you leave home or go to bed. • Turn decorations on only after dark. • Don’t throw away your old strings of lights. They may be recyclable. Check with your municipality or recycling collector. __________

LOCAL CHURCHES HOST AUTHOR

This past November, The Evans Chapel of Angola and the Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden hosted author and magazine editor Francie Taylor from Rosemount, Minnesota. Almost 300 women from New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio came to hear Francie and her husband Norman speak on relationships, trials, and hurt. Other sessions were taught on ways wives can help their husbands, and various lies that single women believe. Francie also maintains the website: www.keeptheheart.com. __________

OLD TIME BAPTIST CHURCH TRIP

Young people from the Old Time Baptist Church of Hamburg and Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden travelled to Conneaut, Ohio recently to for a youth conference on Teen Suicide. Speaker Jake D’Andreau stated that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among ages 15-24 in America. Armed with a myriad of statistics and Biblical examples, Jake warned of three catalysts to suicide attempts: pride, rejection, and guilt. Mr. D’Andreau has spoken to over ten thousand teens in this past dozen years on this and other subjects. Many of the 150 young people present committed to choose life, and seek counsel if confronted by suicidal thoughts.

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL CELEBRATES PRINCIPALS DAY

Every year on "Principals Day", the teachers at SCS get together and come up with a special way to celebrate our Principal, Mrs. Judy MacDonald. This is her 12th year as Principal at Southtowns Catholic School and so our theme was 12 months of the year. The kids were asked to bring in non-perishable food for each season. They collected soup & hot chocolate for winter, cereal for spring, apple & grape juice for summer and canned fruits & vegetables for fall. All the food was donated to the WNY Food Bank.
