TOWN OF BRANT SUPERVISOR CORNER

I, and the Town Board, would like to wish everyone a very Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year. I am happy to announce that our 2013 budget shows a decrease in the tax rate for the 6th consecutive year and we have been awarded two new grants totaling $74,015 that will create a climate controlled records room in our new Town Hall and enhance our Town Park by creating rest rooms with handicap access for everyone at all times. 2012 was our first complete year in our New Town Hall and it has been given rave reviews by all that have visited our facility. 2012 also saw the building of a Municipal Police Garage and the purchase of a New Highway Truck and Police car. We had a very successful Recreation program serving 153 campers for 6 weeks. The Town pool was an oasis this last summer and the 9th annual Summer Fest was a success. The Town received $132,350.71 in Grant money for 2012. Also with the help of volunteers, field lights were installed on the Football field mostly donated by Lake Shore Junior Football League who is our town’s youth team. They honored our community this past fall by going undefeated and winning the Oataka league of WNY championship, then going to Orlando Florida representing WNY and beating teams from Missouri and Illinois to become undefeated Champions of the East. Also for your information, Lake Shore Youth also built and donated to the town a concession stand and a storage facility. Looking to 2013 will be very exciting as we improve our park by extending the walking path and create a nature walk. We will be adding another Parking lot & Horseshoe Pits for your convenience and pleasure. Funding has been increased for our Free Summer Concerts in the Park series that begin in July. Our Senior Citizen & Silver Sneakers group has a lot to offer. We are planning a larger Summerfest with rides and attractions in June and the use of our Football field for night time events. During the summer come out and enjoy the 3 free shelters that are available as a first come basis and play some tennis & basketball on our outdoor courts.

The Town of Brant signed a new Waste Contract with Best Way Disposal and they will be picking up garbage earlier than Casella waste did, so put your waste out the night before. The day of pickup has remained the same. For everyone that qualifies, there is a Traveling Food Pantry every 3rd Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Senior Recreation Center. Also every 4th Saturday there is an E-Waste (electronic) drop off behind the Highway garage from 9 am to Noon. Here is to you, for another successful year, Supervisor, Leonard K. Pero And the Town Board

GERHARD E. KURPIELA Gerhard E. Kurpiela, 83, of Lawtons, N.Y., husband of 56 years to Helga “Annie” Kurpiela, father of Richard (Gail) and Robert (Dot) Kurpiela, brother of Marlies Reuer, the late Erwin Kurpiela and the late Helmut Kurpiela, died January 6, 2013 in his winter home in Venice, Fla. Gerhard grew up in Hildesheim, Germany and in 1956 moved to Buffalo, NY to work as a tool and die maker at the Ford Motor Company, where he worked for 30 years. He was a life member of the Dunkirk Yacht Club and a charter member of Club Lorelei, where he and his wife loved to dance to “Oom-pah-pah” music and spend time with good friends. A skilled craftsman, Gerhard spent much of his life tinkering in his workshop. In the early 1970s, he built a 30-foot steel sailboat, which he sailed for 20 years on Lake Erie. He was an avid motorcyclist, fisherman and aviator. For 23 years he buzzed over Western New York in his two-seater Cessna. He loved his wife’s cooking, dark German beer, beating his grandchildren at Uno and sharing his one-of-a-kind observations on life. He was an animated storyteller, a devoted father, a loving husband and a beloved Opa to five granddaughters (Heidi, Holly, Pam, Vanessa and Lou Ann Kurpiela) and two great-grandchildren (Madelyn and Henry). He is survived by many nieces and nephews in Germany. A private service was held in Florida. Fly high Opa. _______

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL RESEARCHES IMMIGRATION

Miss Erica Aikin's Grade 8 class each did research on an immigrant coming over to the USA via Ellis Island and then pretended to be them. They presented facts on the country, heritage, foods, and customs. Some dressed the part, some brought foods in to taste. All brought a recipe to share. They all filled a "suitcase" and described the items they brought and why they brought them. They also needed to talk about their experience of coming over, the inspections at Ellis Island. Pictured: Bradley Darvill, Hunter Skoczylas, Elliott DiChristopher, Evan Herman, Nicholas Ralph, Eli Trembley, Evan Mangan, Molly Skalski, Matthew Argy & Claire Koessler. _________

OUR NEIGHBORS-FERAL CATS

Cold weather illuminates the plight of feral cats in our community. Feral cats are descendents of family pets that were abandoned or strayed from home. They live in groups called colonies and can be found anywhere there is food. They survive virtually everywhere and are found worldwide. Feral cat’s temperaments range from sweet to unsocial. However, feral cats in managed colonies can be excellent neighbors and have been shown to regulate rodent populations. A managed colony is a group of cats that have been sterilized, vaccinated and have food/shelter. A managed colony is healthy and stable, with no new kittens being born. Feral Cat Focus, founded in 2003, is a volunteer organization that provides fundamental services for feral cats in Western New York. They assist individuals to implement Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Return program to manage colonies. The T/N/V/R approach is a non-lethal method to promote healthy colonies and prevent the vacuum effect (the phenomena where cats are removed from an area and new, non-sterilized/non-vaccinated cats repopulate the same area). Feral Cat Focus partners with Operation Pets: The Spay/Neuter Clinic of WNY. To assist with the expense of spaying/neutering of feral cats for residents of Erie County is Maddie’s Fund, The Maddie’s Project is dedicated to end the feral cat overpopulation problem through low cost spay/neuter surgeries for feral cats. For assistance or simply to answer questions, Feral Cat Focus can be reached toll free at 1-888-902-9717. The website, www.feralcatfocus.org., has a wealth of information regarding feral cats and their management. The T/N/V/R program is effective and human. As quoted on the website, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” (Mahatma Ghandi). This information provided by the Eden Conservation Board. __________
