In Memory of our Beloved Chris Bosilkovski We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone for your kindness, generosity and respect you paid our beloved son, brother, nephew and co-worker, Christopher Bosilkovski. All of you said prayers, some had masses - even your local churches scheduled a mass. We know your hearts were also heavy, and at the same time, you found the energy to try and help us repair our broken hearts! Words can never express how much we appreciate all that you have done for us. May God Bless you all, The Bosilkovski Family, The Popjanevski Family, and the Three Star Restaurant Staff

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

Leonard K. Pero announces that he would like to seek his 3rd term as Supervisor of the Town of Brant. In the past 8 years I am proud to say that my accomplishments are many, but my most important has been that I have worked hard to balance the budget and bring your taxes down every single year. The renovation of the Brant School into our new Town Hall saved you, the taxpayers, over a million dollars, and the expansion of the Town & renovation of the Memorial Parks were accomplished with grant monies. In 2005 I stated that I care about you, and I hope that I have proven that I do, working for a part time salary of $19,000, but as a full time supervisor working 50-60 hours a week. I would like everyone’s support so that I can continue to bring improvements to all of our town. Town of Brant Supervisor, Leonard K. Pero

MIKEY’S WAY FOUNDATION WILL REACH OVER 240 CHILDREN IN WNY ALONE FOR 2013

Nonprofit uses technology to help children cope with separation associated with life threatening illnesses Mikey’s Way Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) charity that strives to help children cope with the separation from family and friends during, life-threatening illnesses. They help to alleviate the emotional and physical strains of long-term treatments. This is accomplished by their monthly “Mikey’s Way Days”, which locally serve Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Buffalo Women & Children’s Hospital. On these Mikey’s Way Days, the foundation circles the floor of the pediatric units distributing laptop computers and other handheld, portable, interactive and educational electronics to pediatric oncology patients. All of the electronics come with Wifi and Skype capabilities to be able to connect the children to family, friends and school. In 2012, six Mikey’s Way Days were held here in the Buffalo area. This equaled roughly 155 children who became Mikey’s Way recipients. The amazing efforts of the foundation have already kicked off the New Year. For 2013, over 200 children in the Buffalo area will be recipients at both Roswell Park and Buffalo Women & Children’s Hospital. On January 9th, 21 patients were served at Maria Ferari Children’s Hospital- Westchester Medical Center, in Valhalla, New York. A second Mikey’s Way Day was held this month on January 16th at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, where 22 patients were served. On January 11th, Joel Barlow High School, in Redding CT. held a Mikey’s Way Basketball Event in Redding, CT. Over 700 people were in attendance at this event and after splitting the proceeds with the JBHS Basketball Booster Club, a total of $3,000 was raised for the foundation. February is looking to be another exciting month for the foundation. A Mikey’s Way Day will be held on February 6th at Buffalo Women & Children’s Hospital, followed by one at Roswell Park Cancer Institute on February 20th. For more information on the Mikey’s Way Foundation, visit www.mikeysway.org. __________

WASHINGTON INSPIRED PRESIDENTS’ DAY President’s Day is an American holiday that is celebrated each year on the third Monday in February. School children typically get the day off from school, and many professionals also get the day off from work. Established in 1800, President’s Day once went by a different name. Known as Washington’s Birthday, which is still the legal name of the holiday, this day was meant to celebrate the first President of the United States, George Washington, whose birthday was February 22. Congress declared that day a federal holiday more than 200 years ago, and eventually the holiday grew to become a celebration of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12, as well. The holiday is now a celebration of the lives and accomplishments of every U.S. president. Few Americans would be hard pressed to identify George Washington’s visage, which is depicted on some American currency, including the $1 bill. Born in 1732 to Virginia planters, Washington’s interests included western expansion, which he was able to take

part as a teenager, helping to survey the Shenandoah lands at the age of 16. Washington was also interested in military arts, and he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in 1754, eventually playing a role in what became the French and Indian War. In 1759, Washington was serving in the Virginia House of Burgesses, an assembly of elected representatives of the English colonies in North America. Growing frustrated with and feeling exploited by British regulations, Washington voiced his resistance to restrictions placed on colonists, who were moving toward what would become the American Revolution. At the Second Continental Congress, which assembled in 1775, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, taking command of troops at Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 3, 1775. Under Washington’s command, the Continental Army would ultimately succeed, winning the colonists their independence from British rule. In 1787, Washington presided over the Constitutional

Convention in Philadelphia, where the new Constitution was ratified. Within two years Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. Though the current twoterm limit was not law at the end of Washington’s second term, he chose to retire from the Presidency anyway, leaving office in 1797. He would retire to his Virginia home at Mount Vernon, where he still engaged in various business dealings. Within three years of his retirement, however, Washington would fall ill of a throat infection that ultimately took his life on December 14, 1799. In addition to providing the inspiration for President’s Day, Washington’s legacy is that of a hero who led an army of colonists to a victory over a dominant empire. The Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore are two of the more notable monuments honoring the first President of the United States. In addition, the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. is so named in honor of George Washington.

TIMBERBUILT VISITS SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Mr. James Rath recently visited the Southtowns Catholic 5th grade to share his occupation with them. Mr. Rath works for Timberbuilt, a company who builds structures without the use of nails. He shared how important math skills are to construction. Students were able to use their knowledge of fractions to measure using a tape measure and a square. They marked off pieces of wood, which will be cut and assembled into the frame of a doghouse at a later date. Pictured: Mr. Rath, Josh Wright, Madeline Rybczynski, Taylor Jones, Walt Rybczynski, Claire Kruszka, William Argy, Selena Czora, Jackie Kauzala, Charlie Rath, Ethan Bevilacqua, Kyle English, Camryn Klawon, Sally Berry, Nick Giglio & Mia Mahar __________

SOUTHTOWNS CATHOLIC GRADE 2 USES POWERPOINT

Mrs. Kathy Walters Grade 2 class recently made habitat diorama's with their favorite animal. Each student had to pick an animal and then do research. They had to answer questions like; Where do they live, what do they eat, do they give birth, do they hibernate & what are their predators. The follow up to that project was to make a PowerPoint presentation and then present their animal to the class. Pictured is Max Barney with his PowerPoint on bobcats while Mrs. Walters looks on. __________

SCS GRADE 4 LONGHOUSE PROJECT

The fourth graders in Mrs. Jennifer Hill's class at Southtowns Catholic School ended National Native American Heritage month by creating longhouses. Longhouses are homes that were used by the Haudenosaunee people. They were made with pole frames and elm bark covering. Longhouses could be 200 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet high. Inside the longhouse, raised platforms created a second story, which was used for storage and sleeping space. Mats and wood screens divided the longhouse into separate rooms. Each longhouse housed an entire clan-- as many as 60 people! The project had to have a smoke hole, a storage shelf with food, a sleeping shelf with sleeping bags, a door, a place to dry meat and could show any other detail that the students could think of. They were amazing! Pictured: Quinn Griffin, Christian Kehoe, Eric Bowman & Emma Katra. __________

CHARITY BASKETBALL GAME HELD

On Saturday, February 2nd, the North Collins Volunteer Fire Company squared off versus the Brant Volunteer Fire Company in a charity basketball game, with all proceeds going to the West Webster Fallen Firefighters Fund. North Collins defeated Brant, but an enjoyable evening was had by all. With the game, 50/50s throughout, a Chinese auction at the NCFC training center, and equal donations from each department, we raised $2,000! It was a great way to commemorate the fallen firefighters and show that the brotherhood of firefighters is strong all over! ________
