SCHOOL HISTORY AT MUSEUM

On Monday evening, July 22, at 7:30 p.m. the Evans Historical Society will host a program on the history of schools in Evans. The Power Point presentation will include an intergenerational approach where young school children interact with senior citizens from our area. Ms. Patti Seibold, a teacher at Lake Shore Central, created the program with fifth grade ‘Alpha’ students. The students and their teacher invited the older folks to the school where questions were asked regarding schools during a particular decade. The guests shared their school experiences as well as the events that occurred during that time. Ms. Seibold will also share the joys and rewards she experienced while producing the program with the students. Mrs. MaryJayne Ginnitti, co-secretary of the society, indicated the program will trace the history of the schools from the earliest days of the one room school house to the present Lake Shore Central District. She mentioned it is a delightful way to look back at local history and remember old school days. The presentation will be held at the Town of Evans Historical Society Museum (1857 brick school) on Route 5 in Evans Center. __________

The Angola Library Board of Trustees has been awarded $118,572 in funding assistance through the New York State Library Construction Grant for Phase II of the Library Expansion Project, bringing the total amount of grant funding for the expansion to $218,572. The Village of Angola previously secured $100,000 in Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG) funding to construct the shell of a 33’ X 32.5’ (1,073 SF) expansion on the back end of the existing library facility located at 34 North Main Street. The expansion, which was completed earlier this year, has enhanced the Angola Library’s ability to offer expanded educational and cultural opportunities, which the library had been unable to accommodate in the past due to limited space. Recently, the library hosted a performance by Charlie and Checkers in the new program room with approximately 35 children and adults in attendance. “The Library is essential to our community, said Jack Kuebler, President of the Angola Library Board. “As a rural community we have some challenging differences from more metropolitan areas. The libraries of today are working to bridge the gap by providing numerous opportunities for cultural and educational enrichment, he said. The Library Expansion will improve the quality of life for the residents of the communities of Angola, Evans, Brant, and Farnham. For further information, please contact Lori Szewczyk at 716-549-3915. __________

THE CITY OF GOOD NEIGHBORS HELPS FUNDRAISE FOR LOCAL CHARITY

On Friday May 3, Jay’s Power Spark and World Hollywood Entertainment at the McKinley Mall held a special autograph signing to support Mikey’s Way. Tyler Chase from AMC’s The Walking Dead generously donated his time and autographed merchandise for fans with all proceeds benefiting the foundation. With the help of Jay’s Power Spark, three days of fundraising at the McKinely Mall and Rapids Theatre Carnival of Parahorror was able to raise $380 for the foundation. On Sunday May 19, Affival, a company that specializes in the treatment of liquid steel, partnered with Mikey’s Way to hold a Mikey Bowl at Transit Lanes in Buffalo. The event raised $5,000 to helped children with life-threatening illnesses strike back! Lastly, a 12-year-old boy from Western New York held a comedy night fundraiser for the foundation that totaled $619. We are pleased to announce these fundraising efforts that have graciously benefited the lives of pediatric patients with life threatening illnesses. Mikey’s Way Foundation is a nonprofit charity founded by Michael “Mikey Friedman in 2005. The foundation’s mission is to enrich the lives of children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. It is the goal of the foundation to be able to connect each and every child with their family and friends during the long hours, days and weeks of separation they must endure. The foundation strives to help children face the emotional and physical hardships of long-term debilitating treatment. In creating a connection, we are in turn presenting the child with a form of diversion. “These gifts provided endless hours of mental stimulation and respite in the unfortunate and frightening world of treatment said Les Freidman, CEO & President of Mikey’s Way Foundation. With the use of today’s technology, keeping children connected is paramount to their recovery. Mikey’s Way has helped over 3,000 children get connected since 2005, locally serving patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Buffalo Women and Children’s Hospital. WATER BILL STICKER SHOCK

Shock & awe, a military term, describes the reaction as Evans residents opened their first Erie County Water Authority water bills. Residents, especially those paying the minimum Evans water bill of $33.30 based on a 6,000 gallon minimum usage, were in shock to see the new ECWA water bills with a minimum charge of $61.65 bas ed on a 9,000 gallon minimum. The “awe” part of the equation was town officials telling residents what a great job they did managing the water project including the turn over of the water system to the ECWA. A brief history. While surrounding towns were asking residents what water system improvements were needed and if their town could afford those improvements, without any prior public discussion, Evans held a meeting to “announce” a $12,300,000 water project that would include an additional $6,000,000 in road improvements. Residents were told there would be no water rate increases for 20 years! Many, including the Rambler and taxpayers group, warned residents that the rotten smell wasn’t coming from Denmark. Ramblings questioned why the town wasn’t applying for grants and zero interest loans. There was speculation that outside funding would include outside oversight of spending practices. This warning became fact when the 2012 State Comptroller’s audit showed that $2,100,000 in water project funds were “unaccounted for”. The current town board decided not to look for the missing money. The State rec-

ommended and town officials agreed to better water project accounting and financial reporting. Open Meetings Law protects the public’s right to know how decisions are made. Residents are being left in the dark as “three men in a room” are making decisions. Farnham’s water tower was paid for with grants. The Evans water tower will be paid for by water customers via the surcharge. Town officials refuse to explain why they selected a site with an elevation that’s 50 feet lower than nearby sites. This significantly adds to the cost of building the water tower. Since water tower construction hasn’t started, there’s still time to ask questions. Residents have a right to know why the most cost effective site wasn’t selected. Why is water customer money being wasted? Residents have a right to know why there was no post turnover cost cutting in the water department and the clerks office since water bill payments are no longer being processed. The town bought water from the ECWA and sold it to Evans water customers. The 2012 budget shows $1,100,000 in water purchases and $2,000,000 water sales. That’s a $900,000 profit! Residents should be demanding an explanation of the “math” behind the water project and the turnover to the ECWA. Seniors and many on fixed incomes could have received lower water bills. For example, my tenant (a senior), used 4,000 gallons last quarter. She’ll pay $14.80 for water she didn’t use and $14.45 in surcharges based on water she didn’t use. If you go down to the store and by 4 bottles of water, the cashier doesn’t charge you for 9 bottles! My tenant’s water bill would be $32.40 if she were billed on actual usage. While ECWA water rates are set by law, the Water District Surcharge, which is set by the town and used to pay the town’s debt on the water project, could have been calculated based on actual usage and not the 9,000 gallon minimum. The town board declined to implement my suggestion which would have lowered all water bills under the 9,000 gallon minimum. My tenant’s water bill could have been lowered to $47.20. Human nature has many looking for someone to blame. Residents need only look in a mirror to find someone responsible. Few have questioned why the entire water department was kept intact to service 114 customers. Few have questioned why the town didn’t hire a water project engineer instead of paying millions for outside services. In fact, town officials refuse to disclose total engineering costs for the water project. If you didn’t like your higher water bill, you’ll have 30 years of higher bills to acclimate. More bad news. Call the supervisor’s office and ask for a copy of Appendix C of the contract with the ECWA. The appendix lists 31 roads scheduled for paving and new waterlines in 2014, 2017 and 2021. How will the town pay for these improvements? Higher Taxes? Higher water bills? Turn on your TV and find a major league baseball game. You’ll see a New Era Cap ad likely behind home plate. Why doesn’t a town board with little business management or administration experience ask local businessmen for advice? Google “NYS WQIP”. The state has funding for water projects. How about asking state officials for help? Evans water bills may increase three more times over the next eight years. If residents don’t start paying more attention to decisions being made in town hall, they’ll be paying higher taxes and water bills. ___________

Southtowns Catholic School Preschool 3 took a field trip to Chiavetta's Greenhouse in Angola. Mrs. Kelly Chiavetta explained about seeds, read them a book about what flowers need to grow and had a diagram of a flower so that the children could label it. The kids each got a marigold to plant and then had to water it. After the snack, Mrs. Chiavetta sent them on a scavenger hunt to look for flowers. The students were handed a picture of a flower and had to go and find it. ST. MARY OF THE LAKE STUDENTS JOIN COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB

During the month of May, the Kindergarten, First grade, and Second grade students at St. Mary of the Lake School were invited to join the community service club. The focus of the club was teach the students the value of doing things for others without expecting something in return. Throughout the month of May the students in the community service club participated in many service projects to learn the good that can come from serving others. The students picked up trash in the neighborhood around our school, we planted flowers and made cards for our parish neighbors, we made sun catchers for the Sisters at the Mother House, as we also baked cookies for the elderly at a nursing home. The students had a great time learning the value of serving others!! In photo: Students painted sun catchers for the Sisters. NEW BENCH MARKS PERMANENT MEMORY FOR COWORKERS OF PHARMACIST AT IRVING HOSPITAL

For coworkers of the late staff pharmacist at Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving, NY, a new addition to the front lobby is a warm remembrance of her sunny smile and happy personality. For visitors and patients, the new bench is a stopping place for resting, reflection and waiting for rides away from the wind and rain. The new bench, located just inside the main doors of the hospital, was purchased through a generous donation made in memory of Kathleen Fearman, RPh, Staff Pharmacist at Lake Shore Health Care Center, who passed away unexpectedly in July 2011. The funds were contributed by her niece, an employee of the hospital’s Surgical Department, Caroline Fearman, RN, CNOR, RNFA. “Now we’ll just walk in the hospital and think of her,” Ms. Fearman said. The bench features a plaque that commemorates Ms. Fearman’s “Aunt Kathy” and a butterfly etching, a significant symbol for the late pharmacy staffer. Hospital officials chose the prominent location for the new furnishing as a testament to the late employee’s outgoing personality. “I think it’s a wonderful tribute to Kathy,” explained Chuck Spicola, a fellow staff pharmacist who worked with Kathleen. “She was a very dedicated employee who always put a smile on everyone’s face with her quick wit,” he said. “She’s sadly missed.” Kathleen had been a member of the hospital staff since 1995. __________

The Evans Eagles 11u baseball team won the Southtowns Travel League Championship on Sunday July 7 with a thrilling 5-4 win over the Eden Raiders in the bottom of the sixth inning. After falling in the 2012 title game, the 2013 Eagles (90) entered this season with one goal in mind, win. Nate Styles started the game on the mound and threw just 15 pitches in his two innings of work, including just four in the first inning. The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out and held that lead until the third inning when the Raiders tied the game at 1-1. Evans then took the lead once again with another RBI ground out, this one by Dominic Jamison to take a 2-1 lead. They then added another run on a sacrifice fly by Trey Gehen to take a 3-1 lead entering the fourth inning. The Raiders then scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead 4-3 entering the bottom of the fourth. Evans then played fundamental baseball and tied the game up by advancing runners and scoring the tying run on a squeeze play after a Nate Langdon laid down a perfect bunt. Nate Lockwood then entered the game on the hill and struck out the first two batters he faced before walks put runners at second and third in the top of the fifth. After the Eden batter was able to work the count to 3-2, Lockwood was able to entice a ground ball to second base to end the threat. The game entered the sixth and last inning tied at four. Evans, as the home seed by virtue of the top seed, was the home team. Lockwood again came out throwing smoke and struck out an Eden batter after a bloop single put a runner on base. With runners on second and third and one out, the key play of the game occurred when Eden hit a hard ground ball to first base which was then scooped up by first baseman Patrick Majkut. Majkut then stepped on the base to record the out and fired home to catcher Sam Bogdan who blocked the plate and tagged out the runner attempting to score and record the double play. The stage was then sent as Evans came to bat in the bottom of the last inning. Nate Langdon led off the inning with a walk and Connor Strade then hit a seeing-eye infield single to put runners on first and third. Evans then loaded the bases on a misplayed ground ball with no outs. Bryan Rechin then battled the pitcher to a 3-2 count and finally succumbed after fouling off several pitches. With the infield drawn in, Spencer Kwilos hit a hot smash that was fielded by the third baseman who was unable to force out Langdon at home, scoring the winning run. The members of the Evans Eagles team this year are: Tommy Barber, Sam Bogdan, Alex Martin, Jason Martin, Patrick Majkut, Trey Gehen, Nate Styles, Spencer Kwilos, Nate Lockwood, Nate Langdon, Dominic Jamison, Connor Strade, and Bryan Rechin. The team is coached by Tom Kwilos who is assisted by Rich Bogdan, Bob Langdon, and Don Lockwood. _________

ST. MARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE FIELD DAY

Mr. Anthony George, a teacher at Lake Shore Central Schools in Angola, NY, started Bald for Bucks to honor his sister, Cathleen, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30 in 2002. Cathleen underwent chemo and radiation treatments. It was during this time Bald for Bucks was born. On March 13, 2004, Cathleen George lost her battle with cancer. Her spirit now lives through this annual fundraiser. On May 6, 2013, 154 students at West Elementary participated: 59 students shaved their heads; 9 Locks of Love, 49 manicures, and 37 hair extensions through Roswell Park’s Goin’ Bald for Bucks Fundraiser. All funds raised will directly benefit research and patient care programs at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Before the event started, the students at West Elementary raised $21,089.69! This is West Elementary’s second year to sponsor Bald for Bucks. Mrs. Kathie Barreca, a Teacher Aide, has organized the event with the help of many staff members, the PTO, parents, family, and friends. In 2012, the event was in honor of Mrs. Becky Holmes, a kindergarten teacher from West Elementary, and in memory of Mrs. Barreca’s late husband, Larry. The school raised $15,80. This year, the event was in honor of Mrs. Elaine Wegelin and in memory of Mrs. Barreca’s late husband, Larry, who lost his battle with cancer on February 28, 1990. Haircuts were provided by Kim’s Shear Expressions from Angola, NY and Diva Studios from Buffalo, NY. Mrs. Barreca is so proud of the students and their parents for their unending love and support! She would love to see us live in a cancer-free world so our children don’t have to face this terrible disease that takes the lives of many loved ones. Many of our students know or have a family member who has lost the battle or are still fighting cancer. They are the heroes in our world! Schools in the West Seneca School District have held Bald for Bucks this year and raised over $115,745!
