Obituaries OBITUARIES

MARY L. NORMAN (nee Hughes) A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Laing Funeral Home, Inc., Eden NY for Mary L. Norman of Derby, NY who was born December 13, 1945 and died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at age 66.

She is the daughter of Ermil and Mary Hughes.

She was the devoted wife of Richard J. Norman, Jr.; the loving mother of Michael D. (Cathy), Jeffery S. (Brenna), Theresa M. Norman and Cynthia D. (Bill) Wick; the grandmother of Jessica, Courtney, Zach, Paul and Colton; sister of Ermil (Michaela), late Dennis A. (Anita) Hughes.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mary will be remembered for being her family’s matriarch as she had a special love for her family. She was a lover of life who enjoyed watching the Yankees play baseball, camping on Chautauqua Lake and loved to cook and bake.

BETH MARIE HEMPHILL A Memorial Service will be held on July 14, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, NY for Beth Marie Hemphill who was born January 12, 1925 and died June 26, 2012.

Miss Hemphill was a teacher for Lake Shore Central Schools for 34 years.

She began her teaching career in 1947 as a fifth grade teacher at the Angola School on High Street, which at that time housed students in grades K-12. After spending several years in this assignment, she moved on to become a fifth grade teacher at the William T. Hoag School.

In 1975, she again returned to the Angola School, now known as the John T. Waugh Intermediate School.

It was so named after a former principal and teacher, John T. Waugh, who was a high school history teacher when Miss Hemphill began her career.

Miss Hemphill has always tried to provide students with a variety of classroom experiences. One of her favorite activities was playing the piano and singing with her students. When Miss Hemphill transferred to the John T. Waugh Intermediate School in 1975, the piano in her classroom, so familiar and so much a part of her teaching technique, followed her there.

Outside of school, Miss Hemphill occupied herself with her favorite hobby, gardening. The Hemphill residence reflected this with its array of summer flowers and neatly kept gardens. In addition to gardening, Miss Hemphill was interested in oil painting, playing the organ and piano and raising African violets. ________

Community News WHAT’S NEW AT THE ANGOLA PUBLIC LIBRARY?

CARIBBEAN EXTRAVAGANZA AT ANGOLA GAZEBO On Wednesday, July 11th at 7:00 P.M. the Caribbean Extravaganza group will make their first stop at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park. The park is one block in back of the Angola Post Office.

The evening is sponsored by the Friends Of The Village and Shultz & Co., Hardware and Appliances, Angola’s oldest business, having started in 1861!

The band has played at the lake for several years and put on a fine, fast moving show. They list island, reggae, Latin, steel drum, calypso and more as the type of music they play. Limbo is also featured.

Handicapped parking is off Center and High Streets if you arrive early. Refreshments are sold at the park by the Brant-Evans Girl Scouts. The Ice Cream man makes a stop at the park each week.

Next week, on Wednesday, July 18th the Buffalo Swing Band, as featured in the movie “The Natural” will be at the park. They are sponsored by Goya Foods Great Lakes and the American Musician’s Union.

In case of rain the concerts will be held in the New Angola Theater. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the evening. ________

GARDEN WALK AND CLUB PICNIC

The July 10 meeting will feature a Garden walk and Club Picnic. The walk will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the garden of Donna Nagel and then move to the gardens of Linda McFarland and end with a picnic.

The Officers will supply the sides and drinks, roasted chicken and BBQ pork will be provided by the club. There’s no rain date, in case of heavy rain we will have an indoor picnic at Linda’s home. Evelyn Bruce and Mary Ellen Hanna will provide the Library arrangement. For more information please call 947-4571. ________

BOATER’S SAFETY GUIDE AVAILABLE

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announces that the 2012 New York State Boater’s Guide is now available through his office. The guidebook is made possible by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.

The guide provides a summary of the more important laws, registration and training requirements, as well as suggested safety information governing recreational boating within New York State.

“Just like there are “rules of the road” for vehicles, there are “rules of the waterways” that govern the safe maneuvering of boats”, said Jacobs. “I encourage all recreational boaters to know the risks, learn the rules and be prepared before taking the helm this season.”

YMCA WRAP-AROUND PERFORMS

On Wednesday, June 13th the YMCA Wrap-Around class sang songs, played the hand bells, and visited with the residents at the Holly Apartments in Angola. The Holly Apartments provided refreshments and a goody bag for each child.

The Wrap-Around Program is for children who are enrolled in the afternoon Universal Pre-K class located in the W.T. Hoag Educational Building. For more information call 674-9622.

COUNTY ISSUES DISCUSSED AT BOARD MEETINGS Erie County Legislature Minority Leader John J. Mills will continue to meet with residents, in cooperation with town and village boards, during scheduled meetings. At each of the meetings, Minority Leader Mills will discuss County issues and share information on terms concerning residents.

Beginning one half hour before the scheduled meeting, Minority Leader Mills will be available to meet with residents and answer any questions they may have, he will also stay for the duration of the meeting to talk with residents after adjournment. Among the topics Minority Leader Mills plans to discuss are infrastructure repairs and County finances.

Legislator Mills next two outreach meetings are scheduled on the following days: 6;30 p.m. Monday, July 9 at the Village of Angola Board Meeting; 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 at the Town of Eden Board Meeting.

Minority Leader Mills, along with his colleagues on the Minority Caucus, closed District Offices in 2010, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars annually. Through outreach programs, the Legislators are much more accessible, meeting at times and locations that are convenient for constituents.

In addition to being the largest district in square mileage, Minority Leader Mills’ also represents the most residents and his district includes 15 municipalities, which makes it all the more important that Outreach Programs are scheduled, giving residents an opportunity to discuss county issues without traveling great distances.

Throughout the year, Minority Leader Mills will be available to meet with residents at Town and Village Board meetings. He is also available to meet individually with residents at a time and location convenient for them.
