OPEN YEAR ROUND

Most 32-year-old women are not asked for their dying wish. Unfortunately, the circumstances surrounding Olivia Coia led Laura Coia, Olivia’s mother, to ask her daughter to make one. Olivia battled triple-negative breast cancer. Diagnosed with stage IIIC at age 31, her cancer spread rapidly. She lost her battle on March 4, 2010, less than a year after her diagnosis. “Olivia stayed positive through everything she had to deal with,” her father, David Coia explained. Prior to Olivia's death, Olivia’s mother Laura watched her daughter’s health deteriorate and asked her daughter what her wish would be if she passed on. “Dad could start a run in my name. The money could be used for triple-negative breast cancer research and for scholarships for kids." Olivia told her mother. “She was a teacher and she lived and breathed everything about the kids,” David explained. At the time of her diagnosis Olivia worked as a special education teacher at Silver Creek High School. She was an avid runner, who participated in the Buffalo Marathon just before her diagnosis. Her passion for athletics became apparent during her childhood, running track and crosscountry at Silver Creek High School and swimming for both Silver Creek and Niagara University. “Picture her being eight or nine years old and running around the park with her brothers. One day she came up to me and said ‘Can you time me around the course we are running?’” David recalled. “ Sports were just something she enjoyed doing.” Olivia’s 5k Wish Run is held annually at Evangola State Park, on a course Olivia ran as a child. Sunday will mark the third run in Olivia’s honor. The money raised helps fund triple-negative breast cancer research at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute. It also funds scholarships, awarded to civic-minded high school students attending several partnering schools in the Buffalo area. Before Olivia died she told her mother, “Mom I don’t know what dying feels like but I don’t feel like I'm dying.” Triple-negative breast cancer caused Olivia’s corporeal presence to no longer be seen but it failed to stop her positive and good-natured spirit from being felt. Thanks to her wish, granted by those that loved her, Olivia’s kind heart still beats on the run. Article Written By Lauren Brill, WIVB, Ch. 4 Contributed By David Coia

EVANS HIGHWAY DEPTARTMENT COMPLETES PAVING PROJECTS

The Town of Evans Highway Department recently completed paving projects on Herr Road and Madison Ave. Because of budget constraints, only the bad sections of the road were milled and repaved. Highway employees involved in the project were assisted by a rented paver and operator. According to Highway Superintendent Ed Michalski, renting the equipment is a practical and more economical process because the town paves a limited amount of roads. He adds that it is more cost effective to rent a machine from rates bid from the County of Erie Division of Purchase rather than purchase a very expensive paver to set idle for 51 weeks of the year. The paver rental includes the machine, operator, maintenance and fuel. "The renting of a paver is a policy or practice used by many of the 25 towns in Erie County," he added. The highway department has future plans on paving a section of Beach Road between Route 5 and Brennen Road should any additional funding become available at the end of the construction season. CHILDREN’S SUMMER READING CONTEST

“MICKEY D” CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY

Dominic DeMariano ("Mickey D") of Argyle Ave. Angola Celebrated his 100th birthday at a party held for him at Dan's Restaurant. Over 100 friends and relatives enjoyed cake and ice cream for the local golfing legend who winters in Florida. His daughter, Joan, from Tonawanda was also a special guest. "Mickey" was recently honored with a story on WIVBTV and CNN for his contributions to the golfing world. He is related to the Galfo family and has been an Angola resident for most of his 100 years. He still has his original Baptismal Certificate from Most Precious Blood Catholic Church from 1913- the year he was born in Angola. "Mickey" still plays golf at Rosebrook Golf Course and hits 100 golf balls a day at Wendt Park to keep in practice. Contributed by Neno LaRusso, Photo by Dave Rubeck __________

OPEN UNTIL 10/31

Summer vacation is the perfect occasion to spend some time with a good book. To encourage a love of books and reading, the Angola Public Library sponsored a contest for children. Colorful bookmarks were given to the children to be brought with them each time they visited the library. If they checked out a book they received a sticker; after four stickers were accumulated on the bookmark each child won a small prize. The bookmark was then collected to be placed in a drawing for one of two big bags of prizes. Over the course of the summer the more bookmarks a child filled up, the more chances they had to win the big prize. The contest ended when school resumed and two winners were drawn. The winners are Catherine Hughes and Elizabeth Atler. Pictured: Catherine Hughes Contributed By the Angola Public Library __________

FROM TEACHER TO AUTHOR

As an author Ted Malinowski has published a new book, which was released October 1, 2013 called True Stories American Corn. This book will take you back in time when the Greatest Generation reigned. His true stories about growing up in the Town of Evans will bring renewal to your memory of days gone by. American Corn is a colorful reminder of how valuable family togetherness is in American homes. Mr. Malinowski taught Industrial Technology in the Lake Shore Schools for twenty three years. After retiring from there, he went to teach in other local schools, as well as out of state and Buffalo City schools. Now retired, he resides in Evans. Contributed By Ted Malinowski __________

STOP HOME FIRES BEFORE THEY START

OCTOBER 6-12, 2103

A fire at home can occur in just about any room of the house and even outdoors. While one can’t account for natural disasters or other unforseen problems, there are many steps homeowners can take to prevent fires. • Check the cords on all appliances and elec tronics. Replace any frayed or damaged cords or wires. • Do not overload outlets or rely heavily on multi-plug power strips. • Keep cords out of the reach of children and pets. • When cooking in the kitchen, always be pres ent while food is on the stove or in the oven. Flare-ups can occur at a moment’s notice. • Don’t store items over the stove. They can fall and ignite. • Turn pot handles so that children can’t reach them and pull them over, risking burns. • Be sure appliance vents have room to “breathe.” • Have the chimney checked and cleaned regularly. • Use a metal or glass fireplace screen to block embers. • Limit the use of portable space heaters around the home. • Use extreme caution with cigarettes and ashtrays. Empty them frequently when signs of heat and burning are gone. • Use light bulbs that are at the recommended wattage for a fixture. • Don’t place any electrical items by water in the bathroom. • Store flammable materials in a locked metal container in the basement or garage. • Service the furnace and hot water heater on a regular basis. • Do not store items too close to the furnace. • Be sure the home is equipped with working smoke detectors on every level. • Keep one or two fire extinguishers charged and at the ready.

SS. PETER & PAUL EIGHTH GRADE FIELD TRIP

The eighth grade class of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School in Hamburg recently went on a field trip to the Burchfield Penny Museum. The students are reading, The Diary of Anne Frank and the museum featured an exhibit called “Anne Frank – A History for Today.” At the exhibit, the students had the chance to walk through a timeline with the events of Frank’s life, along with a timeline of the history of World War II. Frank spent the last three years of her life hiding in an attic constantly in fear, but she never gave up hope. The eighth grade furthered their experience and understanding of the novel by going on a website called, “The Islands of Enlightenment.” They were able to virtually see where Frank had lived and the places she would have visited by using an avatar in a unique and creative virtual world. Pictured above are students Maura Casey (right) and Abby Anderson (left) walking through the Anne Frank exhibit at Burchfield Penny Museum. Senior captain Wade Bergum also played well and created many close scoring chances. Andrew McDonagh, Jerry Yeates, Max Eastman, and Max Matthews also all defended particularly well throughout the match. AJ Bergum also worked hard up top and pressured East Aurora's back line. PINWHEELS FOR PEACE

In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. On September 20 students at Lake Shore Middle School and JT Waugh Elementary School celebrated the International Day of Peace with its Pinwheels for Peace project. Students in 1st grade through 8th grade created pinwheels as part of the international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, and wrote their thoughts about “war and peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others. The sixth-grade students “planted” all of the pinwheels outside the Middle school as a public statement and art exhibit/installation. This is the 5th year that Lake Shore has participated in the Pinwheels for Peace project which is led by art teachers Janel Wade and Jennifer Neumann. The official date for International Day of Peace was Saturday, Sept. 21. Contributed By Jennifer Neumann __________

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer team won at Springville by a score of 4-1 on Thursday, October 3rd. Senior captain Wade Bergum scored a hat trick and Chad Wilkie scored the other Eagle goal. Lake Shore next plays host to Pioneer on Monday, October 7th in it's Breast Cancer Awareness match. Contributed By P;. Taylor, Lake Shore CSD __________
