Local Boys And Girls Clubs To Receive Grant

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Eden and Lake Shore participated in a challenge put on by The Rite Aid Foundation to help KidCents charities. The local Clubs encouraged community members to enroll in KidCents, a program that allows Rite Aid shoppers to round up their purchase total to the nearest dollar, with the extra change being donated to a charity of their choice. The Clubs will be presented with a shared $12,500 grant on Monday, February 22nd at Rite Aid in Derby. __________

Miss Emily Olivieri's Grade 5 Social Studies class had a project on natural disasters. The kids had to break into groups and pick a natural disaster from history. Members of the Eden Garden Study Club were busy creating Valentines in the Eden Jr./Sr. High School on Feb. 9th. Club member Sue Eye (R) guided the group in creating seasonal greeting cards using pressed flowers from their summer gardens. __________

Southtowns Catholic School Snowball Dance

Snowball 2016 was held Friday, January 29th, 2016. This was the fifth annual Snowball dance for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders within the WNY Catholic Schools. It was a great honor that Southtowns Catholic School was chosen as the host school for this years Snowball Dance. The students had a great time meeting new friends, dancing and taking "selfies" in the corner "selfie" station. Funds raised at Snowball 2016 go towards needs-based tuition assistance, to support families in the pursuit of a Catholic education.

Ellen R. Castle

Estelle R. Castle, age 84, of Pendleton, died Thursday, February 4, 2016. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Elizabeth (nee Oehler) Castle. A resident of East Eden for the greater part of her life, she was a supervising teller for M&T Bank before retiring. She was the sister of Gerri (Tom) Sessanna and the late Frances Depew, Carol (Kenneth) Wittmeyer, Jack Castle, and Nancy Castle; aunt of many nieces and nephews, including the late Debbie Depew. Also survived by many friends, including her special friends Pauline, Mary, Irene, and Ginny. There is no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday, May 7, at St. Mary’s Oratory, 8175 East Eden Road, East Eden.

Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Eden. If desired, memorials to the OLV Homes of Charity, 780 Ridge Road, Lackawanna, NY 14218, or a charity of your choice are preferred.

Isabelle (nee Loretto) Welker, of North Collins, NY, passed February 6, 2016 at age 86. Wife of the late Lester E. “Abe” Welker; loving mother of Rebecca (David) Manning and Patricia (Larry) Hawkins; grandmother of Kelly (Jason) Warner and Emily Hawkins (Greg Genco); sister of the late Vincent “Jim”, Carmella, Jacob, Anna Marie and Peter Loretto. Wanda H. Hatfield (nee Steeves)

Wanda H. Hatfield (nee Steeves), of Eden, NY, died Saturday, February 6, 2016 at age 85. She was born July 22, 1930 in Buffalo, New York. She was a daughter of the Late Claude and Florence (nee: Rasinski) Steeves. Wanda was a graduate of Lafayette High School, E.C.C. Technical Institute and Buffalo State College. She married her college sweetheart James M. Hatfield, Sr. in 1950; they were happily married for 65 years. She was the beloved mother of Dr. James M. (Dr. Patricia) Hatfield, Deborah A. Yancey and Cynthia H. Koener. She had 9 grandchildren, including the late Racheal Poole and two great-grandchildren.

She loved spending time with her beloved grandson Ollie Keefe. She had a very close bond with her granddaughter Emily Koener, who lovingly took care of her grandmother until her passing. She worked as a dental hygienist and educator for Erie County BOCES. Later in her professional life Wanda was employed by the Erie County Health Department and developed a system of using mobile health testing units that screened for diabetes and high blood pressure in thousands of Erie County residents. Her program for Senior Healthcare was awarded the best senior healthcare program in New York State by Mario Cuomo; former Governor of New York State.

After retirement, Wanda was an active volunteer teaching literacy to the incarcerated. Wanda was an active member of the Erie County Republican Party and was a New York State delegate to the Republican National Convention of 1968. Wanda was

also an active member of the Eden United Methodist Church and the Alice Hines Circle. A Memorial service was held at the Eden United Methodist Church, 2820 East Church Street, Eden.

Beloved father of Patrick, Michael, John (Annette) Kirwan; grandfather of nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother of John (Susan) Kirwan and the late Thomas Kirwan; brother-in-law of Barbara Kirwan; also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. Joyce H. Schwippert

Joyce H. Schwippert died on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, NY following a brief illness. A long-time resident of Eden, NY, she was 88. Born Joyce H. Duff in Hamburg, NY, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Irene Duff. She grew up in Lakeview, NY and was a graduate of Angola High School. She went on to earn a degree in Business Administration from Bryant & Stratton Institute. Mrs. Schwippert was married for 42 years to the late Dr. Harry Schwippert who was a prominent area surgeon and former Plant Medical Director at Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna. The couple had two children, Mark T. Schwippert and Pamela J. Beiring. Mrs. Schwippert is also survived by a granddaughter, Kelly Schwippert and five grandsons, Matthew Schwippert, Shawn Christopher, Troy Christopher, Ryan Christopher and Jay Schwippert. Mrs. Schwippert was an avid gardener and was a long-time member of the Eden Garden Club. She was very artistic, enjoyed painting with oil and water colors, and volunteered with the American Red Cross. No prior visitation. Arrangements at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross.
