St. Mary of the Lake Parish Celebrates Mass at Hamburg Beach

The sun shined brightly down on parishioners from St. Mary of the Lake Church, who gathered at the Hamburg Beach to celebrate mass on August 23, 2014. The Lake Erie shore line was the setting for a celebration Mass said by Fr. Gary Kibler, pastor of St. Mary of the Lake Parish and assisted by Deacon Bill Walkowiak. As the sun set on the altar, over 350 people in lawn chairs, or on beach blankets enjoyed the first annual beach mass. The evening started with Mass, at which, Fr. Gary engaged the adults and children with an interactive homily which included a hand puppet monkey. He spoke of a wonderful little book “The Hundredth Monkey”, written by Ken Keys. The book is the result of some amazing scientific research about “the hundredth monkey”. “She showed them the way. In the Gospel, Jesus gives Peter and the disciples and all of us a better way...a way of forgiveness, rooted in mercy. It needs to begin with each of us in our own world, our own families.” Fr. Gary continued “but the consequence of this study makes clear that Jesus’ dream is real”. We gathered around to celebrate the Eucharist, the parishioners, who stood around the makeshift altar, said they appreciated the chance to gather at the beach in prayer. It was peaceful.

Afterwards we shared a pot luck supper among friends and ended with a camp fire and sing a-long, helped by our scout troop 411. It was a memorable evening for all. We are looking forward to next year! St. Mary of the Lake Parish is moving forward after the unexpected closing of the school with innovative programs that will keep the parish as vibrant as ever! A new Preschool program will open in September, Community education classes will be offered during the year, and the Parish Faith Formation which encompasses all of our parishioners, will grow in faith and friendships with many new activities, classes, and retreats this year. Thanks to the Town of Hamburg Recreation Department who made the Mass a reality, and the staff that went out of their way to make the Mass a great success!

Town Recognizes Woman Who Went on 4,000 Mile Long Bike Ride

Heather Willard was recently honored during a ceremony held at Evans Town Hall in recognition of her participation with 4K for Cancer, in which she biked more than 4,000 miles from Baltimore to San Diego this past summer. She raised $4,500 for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. Presenting proclamations and certificates were, from left, Lake Shore Central School District Superintendent James Przepasniak, Pamela Miles representing Senator Mark Grisanti’s office, Heather Willard, Evans Town Supervisor Keith Dash and Erie County Legislator John Mills.

The Citizen Forums, part of the 2015-16 Consolidated Plan process, are intended to provide an opportunity for citizens to express community development and housing needs and to discuss possible projects which would benefit low- and moderateincome persons, the elderly and disabled in Erie County.

Citizens are urged to attend this Forum as well as scheduled local municipal Community Development hearings to make known their views and/or written proposals on potential projects to be submitted for possible funding through the Federal Community Development grant, HOME Investment Partnership and Emergency Solutions grant programs.

The Forums will also present a review of prior Community Development projects and expenditures and a discussion of eligible activities. Each meeting room is wheelchair accessible.
