Boy Scout Troop 578 travel to Philmont Scout Ranch

“Philmont is one of the biggest challenges a person can do in their lifetime, but it’s also the most rewarding one. After hiking up mountains, crossing streams and hills, you are rewarded with the fact that you did it. You saw the wild life, the mountains, and experienced what it’s like to really be in nature. If you have the chance to go to Philmont, do it. Even if it’s only just once you can say that you did it.” The preceding was written by Aidan North, a member of local Boy Scout Troop 578. Aidan, along with nine other scouts and four adults, attended Philmont Scout Ranch from July 19th – August 2nd. Philmont is a BSAsponsored high adventure camp located in Cimarron, New Mexico. Here, the crew embarked on a 90+ mile hike traversing mountainous terrain, ultimately ascending Mount Baldy and the infamous, Tooth of Time. The program also included black powder rifle shooting, skeet shooting, and hilarious burro racing. The photo shows Crew 4 upon their return to basecamp at Philmont Scout Ranch. Community School Begins First Day of Classes with Change

An opening prayer service began the first day of school for students at Saints Peter and Paul: A Community School. At the service, Parochial Vicar Rev. John Adams created a presentation for the students about change. SS Peter and Paul has welcomed 137 new students. To ease this transition for families who are coming from closed schools, SS Peter and Paul created a transition committee. There have been many events throughout the summer, to help families, students, faculty and staff get to know one another. In August there was a family barbecue where a school unity vase was created to welcome and join all of the students and their school traditions. This vase is made up of different colored sands, representing the blending of schools and students who now make up SS Peter and Paul’s new community school. Pictured above is Rev. Lake Shore Boys Varsity Soccer Loses Hard Fought Battle

The Lake Shore Boys Varsity soccer team lost a hard fought game at Sweet Home on Tuesday night by a score of 1-0. The Eagles defended well but were unable to capitalize on their offensive chances. Goalkeeper Mike Braeuner turned in a strong game, as did defenders Andrew McDonagh, TJ Kmitch, Chris Jakiel, Evan Bonczar, and Zak Utley. Lake Shore's league record now stands at 0-2 and 1-2 overall. The Eagles next play Friday September 12th at West Seneca East. Also, the boys soccer program will again be participating in and raising money for the annual Connors' 5K Wiener Run to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Angola, which will be held this Saturday. ANGOLA IN THE 1870’s AND 80’s

Life in the Village of Angola during the 1870’s and 1880’s will be presented at the monthly meeting of the Evans Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 22 at 7 pm. Mrs. Mary Jennings, a descendant of the Carrier family will share many stories about her family as well as other early families including the Tifft’s and the Martin’s. The impact these early residents had on the growth of Angola and also their role in the “Angola Horror” will be presented. The everyday routines, job skills, and struggles they endured during the 19th century will also be discussed. Mrs. Jennings will also provide photos of early buildings in the village, some of which are still standing. Mr. Joseph Pisarski, President of the Historical Society, indicated the program will be very interesting regarding the earliest years in Angola. He mentioned the public is invited to the meeting at 7 pm in the Historical Society Museum on Route 5 in Evans Center. Refreshments will be served.
