Eden author and media personality, Christina M. Abt, will launch her first novel, “Crown Hill: A Novel of Love, Life and The Afterlife”, on September 16, at a sold-out book signing at her Crown Hill home.

The launch will also be livestreamed through Abt’s website (www.christinaabt.com).

Abt, an accomplished author, newspaper columnist and radio broadcaster, has written for national publications including an array of Chicken Soup Books and national equine magazines, as well as The Buffalo News, Artvoice, Buffalo Spree, Traffic East and EVE Magazines. Chris Granica, formerly of Brant, NY, lost his battle with cancer on August 18, 2014. Husband of Barbara Reinhardt; stepfather of Justin and Robert; son of Justin and Patricia (Holmwood) Granica; brother of Andrea Mosher; uncle of Christina, Samantha and Catherine Mosher; grandson of Wanda and the kate Wakter Granica. Walenty “Val” Debicki passed September 10, 2014, of North Collins, NY, age 74. Domenic F. Renzi

Domenic F. Renzi of Springville, NY passed away of September 8, 2014 at the age of 68. Beloved husband of Bonnie (Provin) Renzi; loving father of Adam (Kellie) Zeitler; grandfather of Mia Elizabeth; brother of Florence Dunn; also survived by nieces, nephews and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday September 11, 2014 at Epiphany of Our Lord Church, Langford. No prior visitation. If desired, memorial may be made to the American Lung Association. H. Phillip Smith

H. Phillip Smith, a bank branch manager in Gowanda for more than 30 years, died August 29 in his Blasdell home. He was 76.

Born in Olean, he was a graduate of Alleghany High School and attended Bryant and Stratton Business institute and Bladwin-Wallace College.

He served in the Marine Corps.

An assistant treasurer of Niagara Permanent Savings and Loan Association, Mr. Smith in 1973 was named to head the Gowanda office after a merger with the Gowanda Co-operative Savings and Loan Association.

He continued as branch manager when Goldome acquired Niagara Permanent and after Goldome was acquired by Key Bank.

He retired in 1996.

In retirement, Mr. Smith moved from Eden to Blasdell and worked in temporary jobs as a machinist, a lab technician and as a Hamburg school bus aide. He was a member of the Gowanda Chamber of Commerce and served as treasurer.

He was a member of the Marine Corps League; the Loyal Order of Moose; Phoenix Lodge 262, Free and Accepted Masons; and the Gowanda Shrine Club, where he was active with the circus.

A longtime parishoner at Trinity Episcopal Church in Hamburg, he served as a Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Smith had a passionate interest in Section VI high school sports and followed teams from Hamburg, Orchard Park and Frontier.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Bergman; a son, Jeffrey; a brother Gerard; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, September 6 at the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home, 21 Pierce Avenue, Hamburg. __________

Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is the inflammation and/or infection of the pancreas.

Pancreatitis is a very common disease in dogs that ingest people food occasionally or routinely. The condition occurs regardless of the amount of people food given to the patient, and can be triggered at any time, even if they have had it before without a problem. When a dog ingests people food, or a food that is too rich in nutrients, the intestines realize that the food is different than the routine food it gets. Once the intestines realize that it has too many nutrients, it requests that the pancreas sends more enzymes to digest those nutrients. As the food is digested, it is overstimulated, and it sends a request to the pancreas, once again.

This cycle continues again and again, and the pancreas becomes overwhelmed. Unfortunately, these active enzymes start digesting the pancreas itself and this leads to inflammation and possibly infection of the pancreas. If the patient is not treated in a timely fashion, the pancreas could necrotize (break down), and lead to irreversible damage. The clinical signs of pancreatitis are vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, a dog that continues to do the "prayer position", decreased appetite, and lethargy. While the clinical signs are not specific, they are always displayed after feeding people food. To properly diagnose pancreatitis, several tests can be performed. There is a test called "Canine Specific Pancreatic Lipase," where the blood is separated from the serum. and testing. The test is an ELISA (Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) test, and is very specific. This sounds complicated and high tech, but it's actually the same type of technology used in home pregnancy test kits. The treatment depends of the severity of the case, but consists of supportive care to allow the pancreas heal by itself. Supportive care in these cases consists of anti-vomiting medication, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, pain medication and a low fat, highly digestible food (sometimes referred to as a "bland" diet). The best way to avoid pancreatitis is to avoid people food, but sometimes we want to reward our four legged family members with some of the food we eat. So what is ok to give to our four-legged friends? A quick rule of thumb is if you won't eat it don't feed it to your pet; this includes fat or bones from meat, or their drippings. A short list of things you can feed include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, bananas, peanut butter, home cooked jerky and rice. While you can continue to spoil your friend, let's do it responsibly to keep them healthy by giving them treats that will help keep them lean and avoid a hospital stay.

The cool, crisp days of autumn have arrived. As fall foliage creates a colorful display and kids frolic in leaf piles on the lawn, you may want to pay some mind to a few lesser known facts about this beloved time of year. Autumn may call to mind Halloween and the return of school, but there are other factors that make this season unique.

• The first day of autumn is known as the autumnal equinox. On this day, the number of hours of daylight and darkness are equal. This is because the sun is aligned with the center of the Earth between the north and south of the planet. The other equinox occurs in the spring, which arrives in the third week of March in the Northern hemisphere.

• In Greek mythology, autumn was a time when Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades, the god-king of the underworld. During this time, Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, was distraught and the ground grew sparse and cold. When Persephone returned in the springtime, plants and life bloomed anew because of Demeter's happiness.

• Those who live closest to the equator, which is the center of the planet, never experience the season of autumn. Around the equator, the temperature remains consistently warm.

• Yellow, orange and variations thereof always reside in the pigmentation of tree leaves, but they are just overpowered by the abundance of green from the chlorophyll in the leaves. Come autumn, however, when the sun weakens and days grow shorter, the amount of chlorophyll in leaves diminishes, allowing the other pigments in the leaves to show through.

• Red and purple leaves are actually caused by the presence of sugars from sap that is trapped inside of the leaves.

• Fall is a peak migration time for many species of birds. During autumn, birds will fly to other areas as they seek more hospitable climates. The Arctic tern journeys about 11,000 miles each way for its annual migration. That is like going all the way across the United States about three and a half times
