Lindsey Kaye (Nephew) Castillo of the Cattaragus Indian Reservation, passed April 19, 2014, at the age of 31 years. Beloved wife of Benjamin Castillo; treasured daughter of Denise and Murray Williams, I and Kelly Nephew, Sr.; cherished sister of Brandon, Leslie, Kelly Jr., Sarah, Emily Nephew, Charisse Jimerson, Tahlia, Damon Williams, Chase Stockman and the late Murray Williams, II; also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Richard T. Szal Sr.

Richard passed peacefully after a brief illness.

He is remembered as a great family man, businessman, and proud veteran.

Richard was a WWII veteran. He served in the Army’s 32nd Infantry, Red Arrow Division. He fought in New Guinea, Buna, and Leyte. While serving, he attained the rank of sergeant, earning the Bronze Star, Victory Medal/World War II, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.

After his discharge, he married Florence Kotwicki and raised 5 children in the town of Eden. They were inseparable business partners until her death in 1992.

Richard was a very successful businessman.

He owned Szal’s IGA with his father, built and owned the Bell’s IGA in 1962, opened the Pub restaurant and tavern in 1962, opened the Eden Mini Mart in 1975, while being very active in various real estate purchases.

Richard was also very active in many civic organizations. He was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church, a 70 year member of American Legion Post 880, the VFW Post 8625, the Eden 39ers Social Club, an Eden Volunteer Firefighter, and a past Commander of the DAV, Chapter 177, Angola, NY. Richard is survived his children, Richard Jr., Dennis (Judy), Kenneth (Molly), Jeffrey (Kathleen), and Melissa (Donald) Weidner, 9 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his “Honeygirl”, Elaine Vidal.

The Boys & Girls Club held its 7th annual Game Night

The Boys & Girls Club held its 7th annual Game Night on Friday, April 4th at the American Legion in Eden. The event was attended by approximately 150 people and hosted by “The Quizmaster,” Dennis George.

The night kicked off with Dennis quizzing the audience about a variety of topics including television theme songs, common phrases, sports, and movies.

Audience members were also called up to the buzzer to participate in a men vs women Family Feud-style competition.

Of course, despite its name, this event is not all fun and games. The 18 registered teams who participated in the evening’s team competition were hungry for a win, including last year’s returning champions, the Eden Elementary Teachers! After several rounds of play, those 18 teams were winnowed down to the final four: The Ambulance Chasers (sponsored by Campbell & Shelton), the Quizzards, the Clinicians (sponsored by Mobile Primary Partners), and Keep Calm, Quiz On. The lightning quick buzzer round sadly eliminated the Ambulance Chasers and Keep Calm, Quiz On, leaving Game Night veterans the Quizzards to duke it out with Game Night rookies, the Clinicians. After a final round of intense buzzing and fierce competition, the Clinicians were victorious, taking home the coveted Game Night trophy!

The Club would like to thank all the volunteers, teams, and spectators who helped make this event a success. We look forward to running this fun event next year! __________

Katherine LaVerdi's first grade class from Eden GNazareth College is pleased to honor students with the President’s Community Service Awards.

The award recognizes students who have demonstrated a commitment to service, either to our own Nazareth College community or the greater community at large. Recipients of the award were honored at the 2014 President’s Civic Engagement Awards Ceremony on April 22 where Nazareth College President Daan Braveman awarded each student.
