Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Fort Niagara SCS Students in Grade 6 & 7 took an end of the year field trip to Old Fort Niagara. The tour included a guide that gave a history of the Fort of an era when great empires struggled for control of North America. They visited the original 18th century buildings, enjoyed incredible views, took part in the living history programs that included a black smith and a loyalist and watched artillery firing demonstrations. The kids went into the Visitor Center and saw original artifacts and the Fort's original War of 1812 Flag.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County Master Gardener Program Announce Inaugural College Scholarship Winners

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County Master Gardener Program Scholarship Committee announce the winners of their inaugural college scholarship.

Receiving the scholarships for 2016 are Leila Richmond of Eden, NY, and August Cudeck of Kenmore, NY. Ms. Richmond will graduate from Eden Junior Senior High School this month and plans to study Agricultural Sciences/Agricultural Business. Mr. Cudeck graduated from St. Josephâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Collegiate Institute in May and will pursue studies in Environmental Engineering. Both students have been accepted into Cornell University where they will begin their studies this fall.

Through this inaugural scholarship opportunity, the CCE Erie County Master Gardener Program made up to two college scholarships available to graduating high school seniors who reside in and attend Erie County high schools planning to study horticulture, botany or a closely related field at a NYS accredited college or university.

Horticulturalists can work in industry, government or educational institutions or private nurseries or gardens.

Other disciplines that relate and complement horticulture include agriculture, biology, botany, chemistry, entomology, environmental sciences, genetics, landscape design, physiology, statistics, sustainable agriculture, urban geography and urban planning.

The Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener program is a volunteer educational program conducted in each county of New York State. Master Gardeners have special training in horticulture and then contribute time as volunteers to provide horticultural related education to their communities. The CCE Master Gardener (MG) Program in Erie County was founded in 1979. ___________

Pennysaver Deadline: Wednesday at 2:00 pm Southtowns Catholic School Saves the Tadpoles SCS was invited to Cradle Beach Camp for "Save the Tadpole Day". This happens every year right before Cradle Beach drains their swimming pool for the new season. The kids took buckets and nets on their adventure. For 2 hours, the students and adults collected tadpoles, pollywogs, small toads and 1 baby snapping turtle and relocated them to Little Sister Creek. They never know how many will make it to adulthood but it's better than going down the drain.
