WALTER “WALLY” LEE DARLING JR. Walter "Wally" Lee Darling Jr., age 45, formerly of Gowanda, moved on to new challenges with his maker on Dec. 21, 2013.

Wally was born on Christmas eve in 1967. Walter never stopped fighting his battle and never gave up hope in the short time he had after he was diagnosed with metastatic esophageal cancer on Sept. 19, 2013. Wally leaves behind his wife Shari of 7 years, his son Mark, twin granddaughters Sierra and Serena, two step-daughters, Malarie and Krystan, his sister Tina, Niece, Makayla, nephew Nate, his father Walt Sr., his step-mother Lorissa, numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. He is preceeded in death by his mother Carol, and his beloved Uncle Owen, whom he always talked about.

He gained a lot of strength from his Uncle Owen over the last few months. Services were held on Jan. 4, 2013 at Wentland Funeral Home, 10634 Main St. North Collins, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations or memorials may be made to his wife at 6480 S Xanadu Way, Centennial CO 80111. __________ VIRGIL “BOUGE” SENECA Virgil "Bouge" Seneca of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, age 75, passed December 28, 2013. Former husband of Wanda John; loving father of Valarie, Daniel, Christine, Barbara, Michelle, Carlin, Tyler, Cameron, Staci "Dolly" Seneca and the late Harlan Seneca; also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother of Rita Snyder, Leslie "Jo" Snyder and Deborah John; son of the late Alwood and Frances Seneca.

North Collins Social Studies Department Chairman Tom Bittner was the recently honored by the Goethe-Institut as the 2013 Tranatlantic Outreach Program (TOP) Fellow of the Year. The award was presented to Mr. Bittner at a reception held in his honor during the National Council for the Social Studies Conference in St. Louis, Missouri on November 22, 2013.

Since 2002, TOP has sought to find the best and most qualified Social Studies educators from the United States and Canada and give them the opportunity to experience Modern Germany in the most dramatic way possible: in person. In 2008, and again in 2012, Mr. Bittner was selected to participate in two-week study tours to Germany.

Those Social Studies educators who have traveled to Germany with TOP as study tour participants are referred to as “TOP Fellows.” From 2005 onward, the Transatlantic Outreach Program has awarded the title “TOP Fellow of the Year” to the one educator from the entire TOP Fellow network who displays the requisite personal qualities, such as enthusiasm for teaching about Modern Germany, leadership displayed during the study tour, and a desire to collaborate with other educators to strengthen GermanAmerican relations in the Social Studies classroom and beyond.

Of the nearly 1,100 teachers from the United States and Canada who have benefitted from TOP Study Tours to Germany, Mr. Bittner is only the ninth person to have been selected for this prestigious award. In addition to the award, Mr. Bittner was also notified that he has been selected to lead a Study Tour to Germany in July 2014. __________

The North Collins Annual Senior Citizen Luncheon was held at the Elementary School on December 5, 2013 in conjunction with the North Collins Recreation Department. Seventy-five guests were served a delicious holiday turkey dinner in the gymnasium, decorated by our young students with wreath wall-hangings, cards, and favors.

The Senior Citizens were entertained with songs by our Pre-K and Kindergarteners. The event was enjoyed by both students and guests alike. The community members were very impressed by the polite and attentive servers, and the students gained valuable experience while serving their community. __________
