THE EDITOR’S LETTER
Everyone knows that Summer is the season of love and passion. It is the time when we all feel a bit more romantic and this lust for sweetness shines through our appearance. The mini-dresses are adorned with owers and bows, makeup becomes lighter and more delicate, but, above all, we are all happier, and a smile is the best accessory a person can wear. For this reason this issue is all dedicated to romance. You will find all the tips and tricks to always be fabulous this summer, starting from fashion, going through makeup and arriving to menswear. From the seaside to the city, from day to night, always expressing that bon ton and sweet part that is within us. I truly hope that this issue will inspire you and help you showing who you really are.

Everyone is talking about it or thinking that they have good taste and good manners, but the truth is that bon ton is not just about well chosen clothes and accessories. I think that this kind of style is more like a natural vocation, based primarily on education and on details that show and enhance one’s being.
B
H&M
eing bon ton is a way to get away from today’s aesthetic canons, in order to make natural beauty shine through. To make this possible we have to go back to the 50s60s,with icons such as Audrey Hepburn, when being bon ton was a synonymous for sobriety, refinement, elegance and femininity. It was a way to be considered a real first lady, like Jackie Kennedy, but with a mischievous look, like Holly Golightly’s from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1960). That doesn’t mean that you have to be in you’re mother’s or in your grandmother’s shoes, because that would mean losing contemporaneousness.

Choose a neutral look: from black to white, passing by cream, night blue or powdery colours (pink, grey or dust light blue). Avoid flu colours, even though the block color is fashionable. The bon ton woman is simple and sophisticated with details and that’s why she has a preference for textures in the chosen fabrics:
no printings, just plain colors, no washed out dresses but ecological and appealing ones instead, because the bon ton woman is sensitive to the world surrounding her. What about shapes? Simple, hiding defects: overcoats and trapezoidal dresses, Capri style trousers to combine with refined tops (in lace or tulle) or with without revers.

Accessories
When you walk by you’ll have to be noticed for your gait, not for the noise of your heels. That’s the reason why you should choose comfortable flat shoes for the free time and elegant sandals without wedges. The only exception is for the pumps with the plateau hidden in the shoe: a bit of glam without renouncing to a bon ton style. The only rule from which you cannot get away is to wear everything gracefully: that’s why high heels and uncomfortable heights are to be avoided. Bags are accessories that need to match up with the rest of your outfit. A shopping bag with a floppy hat for the day and a tiny clutch with a pair of gloves for the evening. You can’t renounce to some diva glasses: black, round and over sized.

ROMANTIC STAR STYLE By S.G.
How they’ve worn the pearls Store your last season’s looks with leather leggings, ripped skinny jeans and biker boots! The new season wants to “change” us and make us more romantic, bon ton with a touch of retro. Pastel colours, large skirts, bows in the hair and to be absolutely trendy you can’t miss the accessory par excellence: pearls! Whether they are coming straight from your Grandma’s trunk, or they are coloured or again they come from a river, it’s not important ... This is a must have for spring/summer 2012! Of course who are the ones, besides the fashion gurus, that set the trends each year? Our favourite It girls, always in step with the new trends and very chic; let’s take a look at their interpretation of this new mood and let’s discover from them how to use pearls in 2012!
Style icon par excellence in life as on set, Sarah Jessica Parker alias Carrie Bradshaw gives a very glamourous touch of her own to pearls, where the cascade becomes the real protagonist of the look. Together with a simple coloured tank top and a royal chignon (learn how to do it in our beauty section, with a very helpful tutorial), they become a perfect look for the day and easily adaptable for anyone!
A very strong look for the rebel Rihanna, who does not abandon her aggressive side. Here she shows us that pearls can have the connotation that we like and that is more suitable to our own style. She also wears them in a cascade and in different sizes to enhance a basic total black look, in which the contrast with the long lace gloves and pearls is fabulous! 10 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012
S0 VAIN FASHION The beautiful Nicole Richie doesn’t deny her love for the bon ton and Audrey Hepburn and proves it with this perfect breakfast-at-Tiffany ‘s-revisited look. Backcombed hair with a scarf, big sunglasses and magnificent maxi pearls as earrings to brighten the look. Also the polka dots are very fashionable and Nicole surely is very attentive to details. A sophisticated and very classy mood, just with a simple white shirt!
The trend of pearls certainly could not escape our favourite Gossip Girl Blake Lively who wears them in a double twist that accentuates the romanticism of her printed dress. An accessory that creates a truly elegant touch of charm. But Blake loves pearls and in the second look we see her wearing them with a total white (also a big trend) almost like a Greek goddess, and as the only accessories to capture the attention, a maxi rigid bracelet studded with pearls (very chic) and a Ribbon in her hair with a multitude of small silver pearls. That she was one of the queen of style, we had no doubts, and here we have another proof of it! SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

big news in small doses
He has come! I could not open this column without the biggest news right now. We left with the last episode of the series “Who will come at the head of Dior” and now we have the answer: Raf Simons has officially become the new creative director of the French fashion house. We just have to wait and see how the designer will combine his clean lines to the glitz of Dior.

Here we are, Carine It seemed very strange that Carine Roitfiled, after having moved away from Vogue, would have only done collaborations, in fact, this week in WWD she has finally revealed her plan: her own fashion magazine called CR. It will be available from September in America, Europe and Asia, it will have 288 pages (of which only 100 of advertising) and will cost around $10
Fairytale meets fairytale Who has not desired at least once a pair of wonderful Christian Louboutin? Now also Cinderella will. Disney has, in fact, asked the magician of the red sole to put his signature on the most famous pair of shoes in the world: the Cinderella’s glass slippers. big news in small doses
It’s all so British. The London Olympics are approaching, so we should really get in the mood and buy something very British, not that this is particularly difficult since the Union Jack is an everlasting trend. Jimmy Choo, however, helps us by creating a mini collection totally coverd by the British flag: sunglasses, bags, coin holders, loafers, and much more .. all dedicated to the Olympic Games
I left it for last… because I knew it would be the icing on the cake. The queen of minimalist clothing, Anna dello Russo, will sign an accessories collection for H & M which will be available from October 4th in 140 selected stores worldwide. The predominant colours? Gold and turquoise.
They don’t know what to invent anymore. We are not even talking about a random name, but about Chanel. It seems that the new ambassador of the famous fragrance of the Maison, # 5, will be a man. Obviously not a simple model, but Brad Pitt. If you’re wondering why, well done. We are wondering the same thing.

Is lace the new black? By Alessandra Pepe

e saw it first in our grandma’s wardrobe and then it started returning more and more on the catwalks in the last seasons. Lace is officially the new black. Both women and young girls are crazy about lace because it has a sophisticated attitude that suits femininity and sensuality. The true king of lace garments is definitely the dress: according to the chosen colour and to the outfit you can obtain a different look every day. Elegant for a night party, fun for a summer picnic with friends, trendy for a happy hour with your boyfriend: there are lace dresses for every occasions and now we can try to find them in the most famous low-cost shops.

What kind of lace dress is indispensable in your closet this summer? I think that, according

UNDERNEATH THE CLOTHES
In the 2012 spring collection by Etam. We can still find the unfailing floral printings, proposed both in bright colors like pink, great protagonist not only in the lingerie, and in darker tones, where flowers stand out thanks to an elegant bright-dark contrast.

Underwear. Spring’s absolute protagonist. Let’s see how. Romantic: this spring fashion rediscovers seductive and refined underwear. Lots of collections that wrap women’s bodies in a soft hug, made of delicate colors and soft fabrics, floral printings and sensual laces for a woman who loves to seduce, and first of all to make the most of herself. Following some suggestions about 2012 spring’s underwear. For those who love the classics but don’t want to renounce to the color, Etam also offers, realized in lace, the most appreciated fabric for lingerie, but illuminated by pastel colors, delicate and elegant. For those who have a real passion for underwear and who spare no expense, here some images from the spring collection by La Perla and Agent Provocateur. Color and sensuality, in addition to the evergreen laces and the purity of the white. Pure femininity.
Let’s go on with what Tezenis offers: in addition to the classic collection “basic”, Tezenis give us some colorful ideas with outfits made out of a delicate lace that goes from an light old pink to the brightest salmon pink. This collection pays homage to the spring by putting flowers on bras and panties.
Yamamay pays homage to floral and not only with suits but also
with slips, giving it a hint of sensuality and combining it with the everlasting black. 24 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

The “Ti per te” collections created by Cristina Tardito, the creator of the brand Kristin T, made for Oviesse is all pink and a waterfall of small flowers is the absolute protagonists.
In conclusion, we cannot forget to mention the two big news by intimissimi: The “shaping” line which evokes the Sicilian landscapes, in the tones of orange and green. Always soft lines to wrap and underline the curves.
A present for our friends that are about to say the fatidical “yes”. Yes, because intimissimi reconfirms the “bridal” collection, a capsule collection in soft silk and luxury details. A gem: the garter with the blue detail as a lucky charm. SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

A DOLL’S WAY OF LIFE
T
he concept of Dolly style is much more varied and colourful than you would think. Japan is pushing the world towards this philosophy of fashion, which is a real culture, with specific dictates, shops and “thoughts” without taking away the fact that, here in Italy and in other parts of the world, the Lolita Style is very well followed and partly reinterpreted. It would be simplistic to bring everything to the simple definition of “doll”. In fact, the philosophy behind it is made of clear rules. To remember is that the classic elements of the Lolita’s style are full skirts of different lengths, petticoats, wide choice of accessories and very elaborate outfits, but there are many possible Lolitas! The classic sweet Lolita, very colourful and “dolly-like”, wearing tiaras and dresses with a childish silhouette, has several variants named according to the predominant colours, such as pastel colours, black, or blue. So let’s see to the Gothic Lolita, whose favourite colour is black, and the Classic Lolita, more mature in the use of colours. The punk Lolita uses punk clichés such as safety pins, zippers, ties, chains, skulls, tartan. Very interestiting is the Kimono Lolita, which incorporates all the things mentioned above but in a “housewife” mood, that is with characteristic kimonos and dresses. 26 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

S0 VAIN FASHION How to get ideas and be inspired?
The Lolita style is very difficult and with such particular clichés that here in Europe it’s not as popular as in Japan. We could define these looks extremes, but we can also take some ideas to wear in our everyday outfits. The skirts are very 50’s and are less dramatic when combined with a leather jacket and heels, rather than pink ballet shoes with straps. The tiaras are beautiful, if worn with a whole jeans-and-rock look. The Lolita’s makeup can be worn either with really formal clothes for particular events or for our everyday life to enhance eyes and lips. The use of colour is up to us! S0 VAIN FASHION Let’s start with the basics: you can’t imitate the style of Taylor Swift if you do not have dresses and skirts in your wardrobe. Keep this in mind: the look of this singer is ultra-feminine, so forget all the items with squared shapes, but go for softer shapes, who embrace the silhouette with floaty fabrics. Lace is perfect to enrich a seemingly obvious outfit. For an everyday look, choose jeans worn with boots or brogues. For special occasions, go for full or calf-length dresses, loose hair and bare shoulders. If it is cold, opt for sweaters with buttons at the front and style your hair in a bun at the nape of your neck. The must-have item? A lumberjack shirt, worn with a pair of skinny jeans or knotted on a white lace skirt. The must-have accessory? All the hair accessories, from headbands to hats in which to encapsulate all the hair and leave out only the fringe. Where to find it in the city? The big chains will help you. For skirts and dresses look at H&M and Zara, for shirts and leggings go to Terranova, Pimkie and Abercrombie. You can find the accessories at Bijoux Brigitte, Stella Z, Colours & Beauty and Accessorize. Where to find it online? The choice range widens, look at Forever21, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins and Boohoo.

i everyone. I am a pair-shaped girl and I always have troubles in finding clothes that suit me. What kind of dresses would look good on me!? Thanks Sarah Hi Dear. The best solution are the imperial-cut dresses, those that are tight on the waist and then float down softly on the hips, hitting just above the knees. Try not to draw the attention on your bottom-half, but enhance your top-half, with low necklines, necklaces and bright colours.
D
ear Stephanie, I’m a curvy girl. Can I wear a pair of shorts anyhow without looking like a whale!? Thanks, Amalia Yes! You don’t have to be super-skinny to wear a pair of shorts. You obviously can’t wear hot-pants, but you need to find the right length! If you are very curvy, it would be better to go for trousers reaching the knee, but the best thing to do is to try them on and look at yourself in the mirror. If you feel comfortable in them and you think they don’t make you look fatter or ugly… Bingo!
H
i Stephanie, I have some doubts! I am tall, 1m 76, and I love high heels, but I’m always quite hesitant in wearing them because sometimes I feel out of place and everyone watches me, so much so that my height seems to me almost a flaw. Do you think that a girl looks good with high heels or just ridiculous? Elisa There are many sayings in Italy regarding height, the most famous says that “height is half of the beauty”. And that is true! A tall girl often looks more beautiful than a short one, even if she hasn’t got the sweetest face or the hottest body. I think your biggest problem is that you feel insecure and you don’t want to stand out because you think that everyone will watch you and judge you. That is absolutely not true! You have to be proud of your height and wear whatever you like. The only think I will say to you is: how lucky!

H&M Intimissimi 48 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012
Hi Giulia. For a Summer formal ceremony I suggest you wear a nice simple strapless dress, reaching the knees, with a black, blue or grey blazer on top (it depends on what colour is the dress). As for shoes, go either for ballet flats or simple pumps (but remember, don’t exaggerate!). So, you can have a sophisticated and professional look during the ceremony, and you are ready for the after- party!

ear So Vain, I am a boy and I’m 27 years old. I would like to have your advice on how I can wear pink (i.e. a pink shirt) and still look masculine!? Thank you Marco This is a really interesting subject as pink it’s usually associated with girl clothes and Barbie. Anybody, even men can wear pink, it’s just another colour that you can add to your wardrobe, so well done for being willing to wear it. There are no rules really about wearing pink but I can give you just a couple of guidelines. Choose a shade of pink that’s not too strong or flashy and style the pink item (shirt, t-shirt, etc…) as you normally would do with another colour. Have a look at Brad Pitt and David Beckham below. They still look very handsome and masculine while wearing pink.
H
i So Vain, I have a question that may sound stupid, but what is a business suit? I am starting a new job and they have asked me to wear it at work, but I don’t know what I am meant to wear exactly. Can you help me!? Andrea A business suit is, in its most basic form, a jacket and trousers t made from matching material and colour. Then depending on the job and the degree of formality of have to wear a tie as well. On that case the colour of the tie should be darker than the shirt and be in the same colour range of the suit.
H
i Dario. I have a question for you: can men wear capris and what is the average length? Thank you Nicola Hello Nicola. Of course men can wear Capri pants as there’s no law against it. Even so they do not look flattering for any body shape/height as they visually cut you leg off. The average length can go from mid-calf to the ankle. If you can avoid it don’t wear them. It is much better to wear a decent pair of shorts instead.
D
ear Dario. I have just bought a new dark blue suit and would like to start wearing it a work. What shirt and tie could go best with it to look cool and sophisticated? Thanks Giorgio
A dark blue suit it’s quite a classic and conservative choice so going for a sophisticated look it’s a good idea so that you can balance things out. A great white shirt it’s always a great option but if you want to look cool you can wear a shirt in a pale shade of grey (oyster grey), cream, sky blue or even try stripes as long as they’re really small. The same concept applies to the tie. Go for a slim tie either in a solid colour, darker then the shirt or if you choose a pattern ( geometric or abstract) the background colour of the tie should not be the same as that of the shirt, while the foreground of the tie should contain the colour of the shirt. Ideally, the tie should also integrate the colour of the suit in the same way. IntimissimiSO VAIN magazine jun 2012

ello everyone. What make ups should we always carry in our beauty case? Or rather, what would be best to carry with us in case of “emergency”!? Elena Dear Elena, For an “emergency” make-up you can count on mascara and lipstick as you can apply them quickly and they give character to the look, plus they are light to carry in your purse. If you have created a particular make-up at home and you would like to keep it that way all through the evening, apart from observing a few precautions when you apply it, bring the products that tend to disappear more, that is lipsticks, eye-pencils or other cream products, it can can be useful to bring a powder to reapply when the base begins to crumble. See you soon!
H
i Simona! Is there a way to make your nose look smaller with make-up? Jennifer
Yes Jennifer! This is a trick that is often used in the world of make-up, and, if done so as to be imperceptible to the eye, it can give a new look to your face. It all depends on your nose! If the problem is the width, then you have to enhance the profile illuminating it with a vertical line and darken slightly the sides of the nose: use a little darker powder than your complexion starting from the eyebrows and going down to the base of the nose. If your nose has a bump, the darker tone has to be applied to the center. It is important be very light with the makeup. Good luck!

ear Simona, with the arrival of summer I would like some change. I want to do something to my hair, but don’t know what. Honestly, with the curves you have I find it difficult that people think you are a little girl, so do not worry! To add a few more years to your appearance, I suggest you cut your hair up to the level of the chin or to keep them curvy. Your color is perfect. I’m sorry I could not be more precise, but you described very little of your face. I hope these tips will come in handy! a kiss
ear So Vain , I would like an advice. I heard about permanent make up, but I don’t understand what it actually consists in. Furthermore, is it harmful or dangerous to do? Thanks in advance Valentina Valentina, unless you have a particular problems, I would not recommend this practice! The permanent make up consists in small tattoos in an area as sensitive as the face. At the time you should not feel pain, but you find yourself in the following days with little wounds on your face (lips, eyebrows, brows) which could create you some problems in terms of pain, practicality and aesthetics. The pigments used are designed to be reabsorbed by the body, although they sometimes leave some ugly shadows around the area. The make up can withstand 2 to 5 years and I do not really cosider it an advantage, especially for the eyebrows as your hair color will surely be affected by it! If you still want to follow this path, make sure you go to a specialized and professional centre, where the equipment is sterilized and the staff is qualified. I suggest you think about it very well, are you sure you want to give up one of the little pleasures of being a woman? 50 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

THE HAIR FOR THE SUMMER
The hairstyles for summer 2012 are young and easy to do. The most classic buns of the last century are reinterpreted in a modern key, going for a casual and shabby-chic look: thus highly suitable for the seaside! The braid: this is the real news of the summer 2012. We’ve seen them everywhere and on anyone. Moving from being the easiest hairstyle to real works of art. Almost all soft and ruffled, the most common are the “Tyrolean” and the “crown” ones, but also the simple braid dropped on the side.
The bun is still in vogue but it is preferred to do it low, perhaps with a few strands out of place, or carried slightly lateral and embellished with braids and accessories.
The herringbone braid 1. The hair after being combed is divided into 2 equal parts. 2. Take a strand from the right and join it to the left one. 3. On the left side now take a strand to be joined to the right.
The ponytail is an evergreeen: either if it is low and casual, with a lot of volume at the roots for the day, or high and rigorous for the evening.
The result will vary depending on the size of the locks taken (if they are smaller than the braid will be thicker) and the rigidity (if the strands are tighter, the result will be more orderly). 52 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012
SOS SUMMER: HAIR AND SKIN By Laura Portomeo
S
ummer is approaching and you should get ready to expose yourself to the sunlight, either if you are at the seaside, in the mountains or in the city. Assuming that to protect hair and skin against the Summer wind, salt water and high temperatures involves a higher level of care. So here’s a little vademecum to be ready for the summer and make it with healthy skin and hair. Before exposure It’s good to start protecting before exposure, to give the products we use the chance to act deeply.Let’s have then an extended and intensive beauty treatment: do face and body scrubs, nourish them deeply and have a haircut, avoiding dyeing them if not strictly necessary. Let’s throw away last year’s products and let’s buy the new ones. It is recommended to use solar oils for the hair, possibly with spf, and a good moisturizer for the skin, possibly with protection so that they will serve as a protective barrier and they will help with skin hydration and will keep the hair from being fizzy. Don’t forget to reach the ears, the neck, the feet and delicate areas such as the inguinal zone, arm pits, around the eyes, lips and areas with scars and inflammation. To help the cream’s or the oil action and to facilitate the absorption it’s helpful to wrap your hair in a wet tissue for a few minutes. During the exposure Unfortunately a single application of product won’t be enough, even if our products are waterproof, the water from the sea and from the swimming
pool will compromise their properties. It is good to reapply them several times during the exposure period, washing with water first. It’s recommended to wear hats, headscarves or bandanas, not only at the beach but also during walks or during sports, possibly in light colours, which let the radiation reflect giving your hair the chance to breathe. Also it would be better yo keep your hair tied, so that the wind and the sea breeze won’t tangle it, making it hard to untangle it. Let’s not forget sunglasses, to protect the eyes from sunlight. Beware of wind and clouds, take care of your skin the same. Avoid peak times, such as before and after lunch. It’s better to choose morning hours or the afternoon and remember to always keep your products in the shade. After the exposure Both skin and hair need particular care and attention after the exposure to the sunlight, since the wind, the saltiness and the sun rays tend to dry them, stress them and make them weak. It will be good to refresh the skin and regenerate it with a good shower gel and aftersun cream.
S0 VAIN BEAUTY
Speaking of hair, it will be good to use delicate shampoos, considering the frequent washing, and to dilute with water. Better to avoid styling products and to reduce the use of the dryer, preferring natural drying . It’s essential to apply several nutritious masks, especially if you have treated hair and the use of tonics and nutritious water that will restore the acid balance of the scalp, giving brightness to the hair. In addition to all these little tricks, it would be good to supplement our diet with healthy food and rich in vitamins( especially antioxidant like vitamin c and e), fat acid, minerals and trace elements, which will give to the skin and the hair a healthy look. Don’t forget to load up with fruit, vegetables and tons of water, to fight dehydration due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. At the end of the holiday it would be a good idea to schedule an appointment with the beautician and your hairstylist, for a haircut and a reinvigorating treatment for hair and skin. If you follow all these easy steps, you’ll surely have a wonderful and long lasting tan, healthy and bright hair, and as a consequence, a wonderful summer.

THE LOOK OF THE SUMMER By Laura Portomeo
The trend for summer 2012 sees the great return of metallic colours, golden and bronze tones for a bright and absolutely glam makeup. But the real news is the “mirror effect” make up, or wet look.
We have already seen it on the catwalks in many variants, all characterized by light, reflexes, metallic colors and an ethereal look that makes the natural beauty stand out. Let’s say yes then to bright make up, shiny lips and magnetic eyes. Let’s see how to accomplish this look.
STEP 1: THE BASE
Let’s start with a good enlightening base, a serum or a cream rich in alternative will do. Create the base with attention and use an illuminating powder or cream to prominence the face, applying them on the cheeks, the chin, and on the breast, using a warm shade with golden reflexes for contouring.

STEP 4: THE HAIR Also hair have its wet look, and to create it it’s enough to use a wet effect gel. You can apply it on wavy or straight hair, better if combed back with tousled effect or collected in a refined chignon or with an unkempt bohemian look, brightened with colored accessories.

THE MAKEUP FOR THE SUMMER By Laura Portomeo

ith the arrival of hot weather, a big part of us tend to prefer really light makeup, almost inexistent. For those who can’t do without it, or simply don’t want to renounce to it, heat causes considerable troubles to the lasting of the makeup. Lipstick smear, crayons melt, mascara drips and because of the sweat, the base layer has low resistance. Do not worry though, because it’s possible to have a perfect make up even during summer, following a few little steps. Let’s start from the base: to make it last long it takes good hydration. That means abandoning winter products and choose lighter textures that are quick to absorb and that will be easy on the skin, letting it breathe. It would be better to avoid a too dense and opaque base, so let’s use mineral products, colored cream or solar foundation. Currently, bb creams are very popular ann they are also a good alternative. The basic rule for everyone is protection. If you choose liquid or creamy funds, it is possible to make them lighter by mixing them with a bit of face cream, with a clear powder or with rice 64 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

res, it’s better to use mattes, to be fixed on the eyelid with primer The mascara needs to be waterproof and used with spare. When we’re talking about lips, sparkling gloss and balms, to reapply frequently, and possibly with nutrients. If you can’t give up your lipstick, fix it with a powder veil and don’t forget to create a good lip sideline with a crayon, to make it last longer. During summer nails are to be colored with flashy and bright tones, but usually prolonged contact with water and cosmetic products don’t help with the enamel lasting. More than that, nails tend to exfoliate, to get weaker and to get yellow. it is good then to protect them with a nutritious base before the color, and to protect them with a uv top coat that will prevent the yellowing. A general advice is to keep the cosmetic product in the lower shelf of the fridge, to protect them from heat, and so that when they are applied, they will help the circulation, helping the absorbing and the then durance. On your way there
We start from the moment you arrive. It is good to wear comfortable clothes, a pair of shorts, a t-shirt or a shirt - it depends if you go to a public beach, equipped or a really chic one - a pair of shoes. The flip flops are fine once you’re at the beach, not before.
All these items are from H&M
On the beach
The moment you arrive on the beach you have to change your outfit, from what you were wearing to costume and flip flops. If you already have the costume worn under the shorts you will just have to strip them off, but if you are not you must identify a cabin, a dressing room or a toilet for the change - the strip-tease in public are not bon ton, even at seaside. Go from shoes to flip flops, but not slippers! Those are fine at home, in the gym or at the swimming pool.

hroughout the year we went shopping and we were always up-to-date with the trends of the season and have cared for each outfit and occasion. With the arrival of summer and especially with the weekend and entire days spent on the beach, however, it often happens to see many ‘horrors’ of deckchairs and umbrellas, even by men who are usually the perfect gentleman when dressed from head to foot. In general there are few but clear rules of style and good taste, rather than of fashion, to keep in mind about what to wear or not for a day at seaside. 68 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012

Choosing the right costume The focus of your beachwear obviously depends on the costume you have. Once your look is in place, remember that it is polite to stay in costume and bare-chested only on the beach: if you go to the bar, restaurant or boutique, put on your t-shirt or shirt which you came with. Same goes to your departure from the seaside. No matter how hot, sweaty and tired you are, make an effort and wear proper clothes from head to toe, including shoes. Men’s underwear: DOs & DON’Ts By Alessandro Masetti
The underwear is one of the most insidious theme regarding the menswear and it is composed by a series of clothes so risky that seem to be a taboo. The outerwear responds to the gentlemen’s rules, fixed more than 50 years ago, while anarchy seems to be the only answer for the underwear. In any office of the world, whether in a city or a town, it’s easy to see several men wearing the same formal clothes: suit; Oxford or white shirt; laced shoes; tie. But under the clothes? Actually each man expresses his personality through their underwear and celebrities like David Beckham or the actor Mario Lopez seem to have realised that. They are both successful and handsome men and recently they became men’s underwear designers. David Beckham has a long lasting collaboration with the Swedish low-cost brand H&M for a basic underwear line, while Mario Lopez has his own line called M-RATED, characterized by a sexy-sporty appeal, and it’s having a great success in America.
The underpants are definitely the most important item of the male underwear and they are mainly divided into 3 types:
1 - BRIEFS The briefs are one of the most dangerous item because they don’t fit all types of body, in fact they are recommended for Michelangelo-like sculpted bodies or at least slender men. Concerning the color of the briefs, instead of the classic black, white or grey, it would be better to choose a different classic tone such as navy blue, hunter green or burgundy. The striped patterns would be good too, but ranging in more vivid colors, while there’s an absolute DON’T for animal prints, just to avoid embarrassing Freudian comparisons with beasts and birds. 70 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012
S0 VAIN MAN 2 . TRUNKS The trunks are certainly the most popular item because they fit any kind of silhouette. For the trunks are discouraged solid colors, so it’s better to DO two-tones with finishes and details in contrast, or patterns, not just striped, but also drawings or stylized motifs. DON’T go for cartoon characters or comic book heroes, it would be a great humiliation and suffering, not so much for the wearer, but for those who has to see them.
3 - BOXERS Woven cotton boxers, the least of all and primarily made for those who have lost muscle tone. Absolute prohibition of solid white, preferring vertical striped or checkered patterns. Very risky item because of the terrible “grandfather’s underwear effect”.
The tank top and the t-shirt are the other two men’s underwear main pieces. DON’T wear a tank top unless you practice a sport, but in that case, they loose their function of underwear item becoming real uniforms. DO choose the Tshirt, the only way of salvation from the cold of the winter, but it must be one colour and preferably in basic colours. It could be even better if you match it with the tone of the trousers. ça va sans dir...An absolute DON’T in wearing them under the shirts
Concerning the materials and fabrics, DO choose cotton or silk underwear, DON’T go for synthetic fabrics. The only exception can be the hightech fabrics such as Lycra, which in addition to sliding more easily on the materials, they avoid the proliferation of germs and bacteria thanks to the perspiration.

ELEGANCE DOESN’T GO ON HOLIDAY. By Dario Bentinvegna Summer months and heat get along pretty badly with style and elegance: it’s enough to take a look around to see how many horrid things surround us. It only takes a few tricks to always be fresh and elegant even under the sunlight. The image to the left is obviously a paradox but gentlemen from the old days are going to be helpful as a point of reference for this short “holiday elegance” guide. The secret to fight high temperatures without losing style lies in the fabrics and the colors. Start with cotton and linen, light colors and ad hoc accessories, hats and shoes, to be comfortable from head to foot.
Unless you are going to the seaside, instead of the same old t-shirt, give precedence to shirts and polo shirts. Talking about shirt, it is recommendable to roll up the sleeves during the day, and to let them rolled down to 3/4 of the arms or completely in the evening. Let your imagination play with colors and printings freely, balancing your look with neutrally colored trousers or shorts. White, grey and navy blue are recommended. 72 SO VAIN magazine jun 2012
If you want wear some kind of trousers that would add a little color to your outfit, go with chinos and cotton jeans, right above the knee. For a more sophisticated look, avoid the "combat " model, with big side pockets.
S0 VAIN MAN
Now let’s talk about accessories. Personally I’m pretty traditionalist when it comes to footwear, especially during summer. I can’t wear and I can’t stand the sight of men and women wearing flipflops away from the seaside. I think it’s a slovenly behavior to be wearing them while promenading, shopping etc. and hot weather is no excuse! The fact is, there are so many alternatives, just as comfortable and fresh as flip-flops, even for men. If you are one of those who don’t feel the cold, a good compromise would be the classic boat shoes, in unconventional and pop colors. If you can’t do without open shoes, choose sandals that fit your feet.
As you have seen there’s no need to be dressed up impeccably or to wear slovenly and be half naked, to be elegant even during the hottest season.
Finally, even under the hot sunlight, there’s no better way to fight the heat that wearing a Panamao hat, and if you want a trendier and cooler alternative, a trilby would be a good choice.
