The Infinity Plus Milano Contour in Castle Rock Matt kitchen has the perfect mix of luxe design and family-friendly storage for Anna, Phil and their two daughters

‘When we saw this kitchen in the Wren showroom, it was love at first sight!’ 12 yourhomestyle.uk

Ten years later, though, they realised the layout wasn’t working for them anymore. Instead of the existing separate rooms, they wanted a social, open-plan space that incorporated a kitchen, dining area and lounge to relax in with their daughters, Libby, 13 and Polly, eight. After a few recommendations from friends, the couple decided to go to Wren. They visited the local Bolton showroom with an open mind, and immediately fell for one of the kitchens they saw on display when they walked in. ‘It was love at first sight,’ smiles Anna. So, they sat down with Wren designer, Tom, to talk through how to tailor the showroom kitchen to their space, style and needs.

INSTANT APPEAL As their Manchester home had been renovated just before they bought it in 2009, Anna and Phil decided to live with it as it was.

Anna and Phil knew this sleek, dramatic kitchen was for them as soon as they saw it, so their designer helped them to make it work for their family home

W hen choosing a new kitchen, finding the right balance between style and practicality to create a scheme that works for busy family life can be tricky. That’s where the experts at Wren come in – the knowledgeable designers work with you to create a kitchen that will transform the way you use your home. Need a layout that makes the most of the space, with lots of stylish storage solutions? Wren can help, as Anna and her husband Phil discovered. They wanted a sleek kitchen in which they could spend quality time with their daughters. Wren helped them create a space that does that, but also has the dark, dramatic look they envisaged. Here, as part of the #wrenovation series, which showcases real customer kitchen renovations, we explain how.

Advertisement feature September 2022 13 good job; it looks like the fridge is meant to be there.’ Another of Tom’s suggestions turned out to be one of the family’s favourite parts of the kitchen – rather than a solid island, he incorporated a breakfast bar into the design. ‘We love that element,’ says Anna.

A big island and breakfast bar give the family plenty of space for food prep and socialising, with an easy-to-clean concrete worktop

EASY LIVING

Thanks to the 3D render of their kitchen that Tom created, Anna and Phil could easily visualise how the final layout would look. ‘It gave us a great idea of the space and how everything would fit together,’ Anna says. The delivery and fitting was as seamless as the design process: ‘Phil did it himself as he’s quite handy and has helped other friends with kitchen fitting,’ Anna explains. ‘He didn’t experience any issues as delivery was on time and the instructions were very clear.’ Anna and Phil are happy that their finished kitchen not only looks the part but is easy to maintain – a must with two children. As a keen cook, Anna loves the induction hob because The couple wanted a minimalist feel, with units across one wall and a large island. They saw a few colour options at the showroom, but the charcoal-grey Castle Rock Matt colourway with copper profiles stood out to them. ‘The colour is gorgeous. It changes in different light, and it’s very dramatic and classy,’ Anna says. ‘I still look at it and think that we made a great selection.’

A DESIGNER’S EYE

The couple were glad of the designer’s expertise throughout the renovation. They weren’t sure where to place the hob, so Tom presented them with a few options and talked them through the pros and cons of each. They also wanted to keep their original fridgefreezer, but were worried about it looking out of place, so asked Tom how best to integrate it into their design. He went above and beyond their expectations, adding tall units on each side and one across the top to ‘frame’ the fridge. Anna loved the idea: ‘He did a really ‘it’s easy to clean, and looks so sleek and lovely on the worktop,’ she says. ‘I also love the feel of the island. The concrete worktop looks amazing and doesn’t scratch.’ They’re glad they followed their hearts and chose the design they first fell in love with at the showroom: ‘We love it, as it’s quite different and works great for our family – it also gets a lot of compliments when we have friends over!’

and needed lots of love and attention, plus a brand new kitchen and bathroom. Matt wasn’t convinced, but I felt sure that we could make it work. We instantly fell in love with the wide hallway. Period houses like this often have dark and narrow hallways but ours is lovely and light. Décor-wise, we wanted a really eclectic, timeless style. We’re not particularly into the contemporary look as we like to create something truly personal to us.

Inspiring homes

WHERE I LIVE My home is a three-bedroom Victorian semi in Stamford, Lincolnshire. We moved here in 2016.

‘Six years, two children and a pandemic later, we’ve finally got it the way we like’

A BIT ABOUT ME

MY STORY Matt and I both grew up in Stamford, but had moved away, come back, and got together. First, we bought a two-bed terrace, which we did up from scratch. But it was on a busy road and not ideal for our dog, Luna. We were also thinking about having children, so we knew we’d need more space, and we didn’t want to be worrying every time we opened the front door. When we started looking around, we loved what this house offered in terms of the quieter location, the number of bedrooms and the possibility of creating a kitchen-diner. But it was very dark and dingy

The whole house was dark and dingy, and the back of the property needed a serious rework. The bathroom was totally unsuitable with a brick wall in front and a tiny window at the side.

WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE

Six years, two children and a pandemic later, we’ve finally finished everything and got it the way that we like it. We can’t imagine ever moving again.

MY FAVOURITE PART I love the kitchen-diner. I really enjoy cooking and baking, so it was important for me to have a big space. I also adore the hallway now that I finally have my pink wall.

HOW I MADE IT MY OWN We created a big kitchen-diner by extending out into the garden while a roof lantern added light. We put a big new window in the bathroom and changed the sanitaryware. Then it was a case of bringing in vibrant colour on the walls and personalising the rooms with original artwork and accessories.

I’m Katie Dawson, 37, a homeware designer, katie-alice.co.uk. I live here with my partner, Matt, 37, co-owner of the business, and our daughters, Delilah, four, and Coco, 10 months, plus our dog, Luna.

A stunning Limerence wallpaper mural by House of Hackney makes a dramatic statement in the kitchen-diner

VINTAGEFLORALSp32

‘The original kitchen was very dark and chopped in half by a strange section that stuck out and made the kitchen area far too small. Plus, the units were old-fashioned and falling apart. So, we extended outwards into the garden and brought in more light with a lantern window in the new part of the roof. Once we had removed the units, we could start again. I love mixing old and new, and we’d saved a dresser from our old house, plus a reasonably new range cooker, our aqua Smeg fridge-freezer and trusty vintage table and chairs. We built the kitchen around the recycled pieces and splashed out on new units, worktop and flooring, putting a large island in the middle of the room. I absolutely love the quartz worktop by Caesarstone as it looks like marble but is really easy to clean and totally heat-resistant. It’s great for taking shots of my products for my Instagram, @katie_alice_official.’

I saw a green velvet one that I loved in DFS and that really decided the colour scheme, although we then spent ages choosing the right green for the walls. In the end we decided to go dark with Duck Green by Farrow & Ball. I spent lots of time selecting the personal pieces for the room and created a mini gallery. I’ve also got an old Parker Knoll chair from my grandparents that I’ve reupholstered and a rug from my brother’s company, Roxy Rugs. They all mean something.’

By pairing a dark green sofa, the Jules Patterdale in Forest Green by DFS, with walls in Duck Green by Farrow & Ball, Katie has created a luxurious feel, while a vintage Moroccan rug adds texture, along with a leather footstool from MADE.com

Style idea Match your wall colour to the sofa for cosy vibes

Choose a base colour to cover all the walls first, something that the stencilled section will show up against clearly.

Choose the colours you want to use.

Katie selected a series of blue sample paint pots to create her leaves, rather than buying a big pot that she didn’t need. It’s also an opportunity to bring in several colours at Rememberonce.to have a ladder handy to reach the tops of the walls.

The couple spent ages choosing the right wall colour but went with Cinder Rose by Farrow & Ball in the end. ‘We chose the deep green for the living room first, but we wanted something that went with it when the door was open. Pink and green are made for each other.’ After failing to find a decorator, Matt did most of the painting himself.

The former cloakroom has been transformed into a toilet space. Katie hand-painted the wall, creating a wallpaper effect. ‘With small children it’s handy to have a downstairs loo,’ says Katie, ‘but they don’t need to be dull’. The finishing touch was the artisan tiles that Katie has used as a splashback. ‘I spotted these gorgeous tile samples in Liberty. I only needed a few, so I splashed out.’

‘I admired this ballerina picture at a friend’s house. Years later, they unexpectedly gave it to me’ Katie spotted the distressed chest in her local vintage shop, Foxtail Lily. ‘I knew it was just what this corner needed,’ she says Katie used Farrow & Ball Arsenic on the walls, and she fitted a shelf in the alcove to display favourite books, jugs and candles

Make your own stencil with tracing paper. If you’re painting small details, like leaves on a big surface, go for a piece with several cut-out sections, all slightly different shapes so you can choose to vary the pattern if you want to.

‘The hall was the last space to be completed, which makes sense because when you’re decorating other rooms you’re traipsing in and out all the time, so it can get ruined before you’ve finished.’

Once the walls are dry, draw out your stencils on the wall in pencil so you have a good idea of how many designs there are and how close together they should be.

Katie’s love of mixing old and new can be seen with the vintage mirror above the contemporary shelf.

‘I wanted our bedroom to be calm and relaxing, so I avoided colour on the walls, and just went for a neutral off-white and matching painted floorboards.’ Katie couldn’t leave colour out altogether, and invested in a vibrant bedspread from Anthropologie, as well as painting the fireplace bright yellow. ‘I’ve slowly put up my favourite pictures over the bed and added in a few accessories so it’s a joy to walk in here every evening.’

The Delissa quilt from Anthropologie was Katie’s statement buy for her Wilson bed from Next. She’s picked out some of the colours in accessories, as well as the rug from Roxy Rugs

‘This used to be our bedroom before we had the kids and it’s at the back of the house. I wanted to make it a room that could grow with Delilah, and something she (and we) wouldn’t get bored with.’ Painting the walls in Farrow & Ball’s Peignoir was the starting point, while a Victorian-style metal bed ties in with the age of the house. ‘I wanted to do something different with one wall, and found some lovely Swedish wallpaper, Majvillan, with a range called Old Garden, which really appealed to me, and I found a rug to match. I wanted it to be a long-lasting room, but I was keen to add in fun elements for Delilah to enjoy now. I added a canopy over the bed, plus some cute cushions, including her favourite flower-shaped one from Dunelm.’

Add easy colour with a statement quilt

‘We’re big fans of Japanese design and we had a fantastic trip there a few years ago, so a lot of the artwork in our bedroom is from Japan. I’ve had the vintage Ercol chair for years and I teamed it with a bright yellow cushion from John Lewis & Partners’

Check your timings so you can manage your expectations. We had a long delay to the kitchen because we had to wait for the screed to dry before we could lay the floor. It took a few weeks longer than we had hoped and it nearly broke us at one point, to be honest. This meant that the kitchen couldn’t be fitted until the floor was laid. See yourhomestyle.uk for more great real homes

Accept help from friends and family! My dad, Stan, did all the wallpapering and assisted with DIY jobs while my mum, Pat, brought me all her pattern books for wallpaper and fabrics.

Katie painted the walls in Farrow & Ball’s Smoked Trout left over from the kitchen. ‘I like to have continuity with colours throughout the house,’ she says. After putting up contemporary shelving, Katie added some personal touches. ‘I made the weaving above Coco’s cot. I bought a cheap loom from Etsy and a pattern book and used some wool that I had already had plus some extra chunky pieces.’

Try to have a vision of how a room will look before you start. We love to mix old and new, but it’s a delicate process.

‘When we moved in, the bathroom had an awful layout. The problem was that, from the doorway, you looked at a brick wall as there was no window in the wall in front of you and a tiny one on another wall. After clearing everything out, we put in a new window. I’d always wanted some dramatic patterned floor tiles and we fell in love with this design from Mosaic del Sur in shades of bright blue and mustard, which are two of my favourite colours. Brass fittings and lights were the finishing touch.’

1 Create an area where the fronds can hang upside down to drip after they’ve been dyed. These drips will stain surfaces so it’s best if you can find a place outdoors. If you don’t have a garden or balcony, place a bucket under each frond to catch the drops.

2 Put on your rubber gloves then prepare your chosen dye according to the packet instructions. It’s best to do this in a bucket or a stainless-steel sink.

Make your fronds fabulous, like Katie, by giving them a new wash of colour.

4 Leave the fronds submerged for 30 minutes so that the dye has a chance to absorb into the pampas.

5 Take the fronds out of the dye bath and place them into an empty bucket. This will help you to transport them. Then hang each one to dry. This can take up to a week.

3 Dip the damp fronds into the dye bath. Rotate them to ensure the fluffy tips get completely covered.

6 To speed up the drying process you can use a hair dryer on a low to medium heat. It’s sensible to wait until the fronds have stopped dripping before you do this, as the spray will dye. To be on the safe side, direct the stream of air downwards onto a dust sheet.

7 Once dry, it’s time to fluff up your fronds. Start by gently teasing them apart with your fingers, then use the hairdryer to give them a final flourish to make them as splendid as possible!

Long-term renter, Denise Pop, has used all the tricks of the trade to create a stylish space that reflects her artistic style FOR A JAPANDI VIBE I blended nature and texture ABSTRACT ART p44

Inspiring homes TO MY HOME Welcome

I painted the kitchen tiles white and wrapped the wood-effect worktops with white contact paper. I had a hunch that there was original parquet flooring, so I ripped up the carpets and, thankfully, I was right, though I did need to sand and stain the wood. Most of our furniture is secondhand or DIY upcycles, though we did invest in our classic sofa, as I know it’s something that we’ll keep for years and we can take it with us if we ever move. I’d never say the house is completely ‘finished’ as I’m always looking for new ways to update it and make it feel unique, but so far I’m really pleased that we’ve created a happy family home.

WHAT I WANTED TO CHANGE Without spending too much money, I wanted to personalise the space. I couldn’t wait to take up the carpets and reveal the wooden floors. HOW I MADE IT MY OWN I concentrated on easy, renter-friendly updates, such as changing door knobs, laying down rugs and using peel-andstick tiles; I did invest in sanding the living room floors though.

MY STORY We’ve rented in the UK since moving here from Romania 10 years ago. We were initially living in a one-bedroom flat, but when the children came along, we needed a bigger place. When we viewed this bungalow, I thought the bathroom and kitchen were quite small, but I loved the bright and airy living room. The house was really clean, which isn’t always the case with rentals, and it was already painted in this lovely stone colour, so that was a bonus. Even though we rent, it’s really important for me to personalise a space so that it feels like our home. I spoke to the landlord about my DIY ideas, which luckily they agreed to.

‘Add interest to a neutral colour scheme with unique pieces of furniture, like these second-hand chairs that I found on eBay. Everyone loves them and they are my most-liked piece of furniture on Instagram. I made this coffee table by attaching plastic pipes to the bottom of a dismantled second-hand dining table, and then I covered it with two layers of wood filler to add a textured finish. The sofa is from MADE.com’

Always check for imperfections and if necessary, ask for more photos. Make sure that you have exact measurements, particularly if you want a piece of furniture to fit a certain spot in a room. If you are going to pick something up, take someone with you, or make sure that you share the full address and pick-up time and location with a friend or family member. HOW TO...

‘This cabinet came from Facebook Marketplace and I’m still deciding what to do with it. I try not to rush a project as I know it will happen in time’

For example, words that are regularly misspelled will be harder to find and so they will have fewer bids. Look for items near your home that are easy to pick up, and if you have transport or you can hire a van, keep an eye out for anything tagged as ‘pick up only’, as often these go for a song because a lot of people want items that can be delivered.

38 yourhomestyle.uk

Put alerts on your phone if you’re looking for something specific, and have a five-minute scroll at the start or end of each day to check out any new listings.

There are lots of brand new items, often unwanted gifts, selling at a fraction of the original cost, so take a look at anything tagged as brand-new-in-box (BNIB) or brand-new-with-tags (BNWT). Be clever with keywords to grab a real bargain.

Living room

‘Being an artist, I really love colour, but I’m not so keen on having too much in my home as I like a calm, cosy space. I was pleased that this house was already decorated in this lovely, muted colour as I would have chosen something like this myself, and it saved me a job. We splurged on the sofa as we wanted to invest in quality seating that would last, so we chose a classic style that will hopefully suit our future homes. I really wanted linen curtains but my budget wouldn’t stretch. Then I spotted a dust sheet that Augustin had brought home from work. At only £10 per large sheet, I knew it would give me the look I was after and the curtains I made from it actually look really expensive.'

Dining area

‘These IKEA chairs were bought years ago in a sale for £30 each. They are solid wood and such a classic design that I knew they wouldn’t go out of fashion, so we kept them in storage until we had a place big enough to make the most of them’

‘I would have liked a bigger kitchen as we love entertaining, but we are lucky to have this big space for dining. When we first moved in, we had very little furniture as our last place was much smaller, but I’m a real bargain hunter and I’ve filled our home with lots of second-hand pieces. This large wooden table was only £80 on Facebook Marketplace, though it took me a few months to find because I had an idea of what I wanted and didn’t want to compromise. I love the slightly pared-back Japandi look so I’ve incorporated its core elements of nature, symmetry and texture into my scheme. I would love to paint the doors, but luckily the wood complements the look, as do the bespoke pieces of art I’ve created in monochrome tones.’

‘I’m a real bargain hunter and I’ve filled our home with lots of second-hand pieces’

‘The kitchen has seen the most changes as the countertops were originally woodeffect laminate, the tiles were covered in a beige floral pattern, the knobs were silver and the floor was grey. As a long-term renter, I knew exactly what improvements I could make to reflect my taste, without spending a fortune. I find it’s always a good idea to make a moodboard for a landlord, showing how the changes will look, particularly for updates like painted tiles. They were happy for me to go ahead so I changed the door knobs, covered the worktops with white contact paper, and put peel-and-stick tiles on the floor; all quick and easy budget hacks that have completely transformed the look of the space.’

‘Lots of rentals don’t have much outside space, so this beautiful garden was one of the main reasons we wanted to rent this house. ‘The curtain [far right] was hung CommandusingHooks and a wooden dowel so that I didn’t damage the walls, which means no extra repairs when we eventually move out. The mirror is from IKEA, the rug is from Dunelm and the wall sconces are from H&M Home’

‘I needed decent storage and I wanted to hide the ugly radiator and wi-fi leads that were here, so I decided to design a unit, with room to hold all our shoes. I drew out my initial design on paper and after Augustin made the cabinet, I taped on the wooden shapes I’d made. I played around with the pattern before we committed to gluing them onto the front. I painted the unit in Valspar’s Cocoa Dust, and then styled the space with an oversized mirror, wall sconces and a stylish rug, all of which has transformed the dull space into a beautiful entrance.’

‘As a long-term renter, I knew what improvements I could make without spending a fortune’

‘The bedroom had been freshly painted when we moved in, but I wanted to accentuate the calm space, as this room is my escape from our busy lives. We bought the ottoman bed years ago and it’s great for storage. We made the headboard ourselves by stapling an IKEA throw over the old fabric. I’m not keen on the grey carpet, so to hide it I bought a cheap cream carpet remnant and had it edged; it covers the grey, looks expensive, and I can take it with me when I leave.’

Master bedroom

‘I bought the lamps from Wayfair years ago and they were originally glass. I wanted to change them but Augustin likes that they are touch lamps, so I painted them using baking soda mixed with paint, a popular Instagram hack that allows you to paint on glass’

Bathroom‘Augustin cleverly made the slide with a lip so that it just hooks over the side of the bunks, making it easy to move out of the room if necessary. The rug is from B&Q’ ‘I’ve used re-fillable pump containers from Amazon for bathroom products. It’s easy to top them up and helps add a touch of style to the room’

Always ask your landlord before doing any jobs that can’t be returned to the original state. In my opinion they often agree, because they also want their home to look good. If they say no, do some research, as there are so many temporary ideas available for renters nowadays that there is generally a solution for everything.

WHAT I LEARNED...

‘We’re lucky that the bathroom is classic white, as it’s easy to live with. I changed the knobs on the cabinet, and I also added renter-friendly hooks that peel off when you heat them with a hairdryer. There wasn’t originally space for a mirror, and it took time to come up with a solution because we weren’t allowed to put holes in the tiles. In the end, I decided to use the window ledge and glued a piece of wood to the back of the mirror, so it just sits on the ledge.’

‘When we first moved in to this house, we all slept together in the living room as we didn’t have any beds for the kids. So, Augustin decided to save some money and make the beds himself. We really wanted them to be fun, so I suggested a house bunk bed, and both of the children said they’d also love it to have a slide attached to the bed. It was such a fun project, though I had to do quite a bit of research to get a workable design. The slide is made from a piece of MDF that I painted with five layers of gloss varnish to make sure it worked properly. Everyone who comes round to the house has a go on it!’

Being on a budget is great for creativity. I’ve had to think outside the box to get the look I want, but being patient means I haven’t had to compromise.

You will need ł an old vase ł cotton wool ł nail varnish remover ł baking powder

1If your vase is very shiny, start off by sanding it. Be careful to avoid the dust and remember to wear a mask and a pair of goggles. Remove the dust from the surface using a damp cloth before you move on.

ł water-based paint in terracotta and off-white shades ł brushes ł plastic takeaway container ł sandpaper

2 Give your vase a really good clean with washing-up liquid and warm water. Once it’s dry, rub a cotton pad soaked in a little nail varnish over the whole surface. This will remove any grease or residue and prepare the vase for painting.

3 Pour a small amount of terracotta paint into the takeaway container, then add a teaspoon of baking powder. Mix it together and you’ll see it start to fluff up. Paint a little of this mixture onto the vase to check the effect. If you’d like it to be more textured, add more baking powder.

4 Give the vase a first coat of the terracotta paint, then wait for it to be touch dry before adding another layer if needed. Put the lid onto the plastic container between coats to prevent the paint drying out. Once your vase is completely dry, it’s time to create the effect.

5 Pour some white paint into another takeaway container and lightly dab a wide brush into it. You only want a tiny amount of paint on the bristles as this will enhance the texture of the terracotta layer. Apply the white paint in broad, sweeping motions and build up a look you love.

THE PERFECT FIT

OUR STORY

After graduating from university, we wanted to go back to our roots in South East London and get a place together. We had no deposit or furniture, so we moved in with Fleur’s parents, opened a joint account, and saved until we were in a position to look for a flat. This place was newly converted, and the kitchen and bathroom were clean and worked well, which any renter will tell you is top of the wishlist. Also, the neutral décor meant we could concentrate on putting our own personality on the place. Fleur’s yellow wingback chair set the tone for the transformation. Rather than paint the walls we chose colourful furniture and accessories and the first piece we bought together was a teal velvet sofa to take centre stage in the living room. We love mid-century furniture, so we invested in classic vintage pieces, but as storage is at a premium, every buy had to be multifunctional, even down to the dining table in the living room that doubles as a desk, but folds away to be almost unnoticeable when not in use. Lockdown gave us time to get creative, and we used our mutual love of yellow and pink to add some fun colour-blocking to the bedroom. Although we’re still discovering the flat’s full potential, we’re so happy that we’ve finally created a happy home that reflects our love of beautiful interiors.

OUR FAVOURITE PART For Leila, it’s got to be the striking colour they put together in the living room. Fleur loves the elegant dressing table in the bedroom as it’s a reminder of a fun lockdown project that the couple did together.

After spending a year saving, it was important for us to finally create a home that would reflect both of our personalities. Luckily, this flat was a newly converted blank canvas, so we didn’t have to fight against previous owners’ décor or taste before adding our own style.

A pot rack hung from a high ceiling is perfect for keeping pans out of the way, and store any cooking equipment you don’t use much on top of a kitchen cabinet to free up cupboard space. A small step stool will make access easy and can double as occasional extra seating.

Get smart with the space you have HOW TO...

Plump for furniture with legs; not only will this allow you to store things underneath, but it will also give the illusion of space. Use crates or boxes to store spare clothes on top of wardrobes and stylish baskets to house blankets and throws in un-used corners.

Go for wall-mounted lights to free up space on a bedside table; choose rise-and-fall lighting above the dining table to remove the need for table lamps, and go for Anglepoise-style lamps that can double as task or ambient lighting.

Use drawer dividers to organise underwear, socks or even make-up, and make the most of unused surfaces with simple but clever devices, such as an over-the-door storage rack.

‘We’d rather save and invest in a few quality pieces that add a unique touch to our home than rush and buy cheap.’

Fleur was thrilled when she found a beautiful teak coffee table. Although it wasn’t their cheapest buy, it’s solid teak, rather than the usual veneer, so if necessary it can be sanded back and re-oiled, making it a long-term investment. Plus, it’s got a handy shelf underneath where they keep books.

This gallery wall is important to Leila and Fleur as every image is a memory that showcases special times and good friends. Most of the frames are from Poundland, while the Strandmon chair is from IKEA‘Bold pops of colour are key to our look, but we also use plants to add shape and wood for texture, while keeping clutter to a minimum so we can showcase our favourite finds,’ says Leila.

The couple have used statement furniture, vibrant colours and clever hacks to make their rented flat feel like home. ‘We’ve created a cohesive space that reflects both our personalities,’ says Fleur

‘We splashed out on the George Clarke sofa, from Sofology, as an investment piece, but we are equally happy to accessorise with bargain cushions from Matalan and George Home,’ says Fleur

‘This book shelf was originally black but it didn’t suit the space so we spray-painted the metalwork white,’ says Fleur, who found the plant stand in a charity shop and painted it pink with leftovers. The rug is from MADE.com and the pink and gold plant pot is from Habitat

‘We initially brought in furniture and hung gallery displays to add easy colour that we could change at a whim’

‘I grew up in a tiny house, so my mum came up with clever storage ideas, which I’ve inherited,’ says Leila.

‘The green pan is from Aldi – we love to browse the middle isle there to grab a bargain. And it’s also where we’ve found a lot of our DIY tools,’ explains Fleur

‘The separate kitchen is what sold the flat to us,’ explains Fleur, ‘as most one-bedroom flats usually have a kitchen sidebar along a wall in the living room. The pale blue tiles and polished concrete-effect surfaces were another draw for us, plus the high ceilings and ample work surface make it the perfect space for cooking together. Storage is always a premium in small city flats, so we added extra shelving on the unused wall. As we love to inject a touch of luxe around the place, Leila sourced the gold-coloured Art Deco-style brackets and gold stemware rack, which freed up much-needed cupboard space for kitchenware that wasn’t so good looking. She also came up with clever ideas to organise the cupboards, such as shelf risers, drawer dividers and plate racks.’ Kitchen

The couple have laid the table, which they bought on Facebook Marketplace, with their favourite pieces from Poole Pottery. The rug is from La Redoute and the folding Terje chairs are from IKEA

Because the flat is small, it needs to work hard on an everyday level to achieve everything the couple need from each room. Although they don’t have a large dining area, by planning the space carefully, and choosing multitasking furniture, the couple have created a mixed use zone. ‘Our vintage dropleaf table can be easily tucked away, yet we’ve had eight people around it for dinner,’ says Leila, ‘and we regularly use it to work from home. We simply move the rug and coffee table into the bedroom, open up both leaves on the table and there’s a dedicated dining room or office space.’

‘We didn’t want a divan bed because the space underneath is a prime spot for storing clothes and bedding,’ says Leila. ‘We chose this IKEA Nesttun frame because it’s fairly neutral so it will suit any kind of décor and styling we choose in the future’ ‘We found the G Plan dressing table and chair in the street; they were in a pretty bad way, but the shapes were so lovely that we couldn’t walk by and leave them. ‘Although we adore the paint design on the wall,’ Leila explains, ‘we started it during lockdown but caught Covid, and then a chunk of plaster fell off. In the end, Fleur had to use a cake slice to fill it as all the shops were shut, so it was quite a stressful project!’

‘Organising plenty of storage in the bedroom was essential as all our clothes were initially in black bags,’ says Fleur, ‘so Leila calculated exactly how much rail and drawer space we needed and then designed the wardrobe using IKEA’s online 3D planner.’ The couple love giving preloved furniture a new lease of life and used £3 tester pots to upcycle the dressing table, chair and wall mirror.

WHAT I LEARNED...

‘The bathroom was renovated just before we moved in,’ explains Fleur, ‘so everything in the room was brand new, which was a real bonus for us. The first thing we usually look out for in a rental is a decent bathroom with good water pressure. But because it’s tiled from floor to ceiling, it’s meant that there’s not much we can do to add character. We couldn’t hang any pictures or prints because we can’t put nails into the tiles, but the décor is completely neutral, so we simply use towels, bath mats and accessories, in our signature pink and yellow, to add colour and personality to the small space. Artificial plants are also an easy way to add colour and texture and renter-friendly stick-on hooks are a great device that are easy to remove when we leave.’

Bathroom

The mirrored cabinet is perfect for storing the couple’s bath products, but also allows light to bounce around the windowless room, helping the space feel light and bright

It’s okay to let your home slowly evolve with you. When we first moved in to this property, the flat looked very different, but we were on a budget and our furniture reflected that. As we’ve grown into the space, however, we’ve been able to invest in more quality items that we hope will be forever pieces. We agree with the adage, ‘Less is more’. We accept that we live in a small space, so although we would say that we are on the spectrum of maximalism, we also have a strict rule that if we want to replace a piece of furniture, then the old one is sold first to help pay for the new piece and to make more room to accommodate it. I’d describe our home as a vintage tick list, with a mix of rustic, cottage, French and Victorian features. Our living room sways more towards an elegant vintage theme, with warming peach tones and French antique-inspired furniture. Our cabinet and mantle are full of vintage finds, each with a story and sentiment behind them. My style, as well as my love of finding treasures for our home, has definitely been passed down to me by my gran. It’s something I have done since I was young!

I wanted my living room space to be warm and inviting; a place for me to relax and rest. I love the hygge vibe and boho décor plays a big part in my home too. I love natural wood textures, like rattan and cane, and pastel shades. I’ve just painted the walls with Pink Ground by Farrow & Ball and it’s made this corner cosy in the evenings and fresh during the day!

@bayardhouse_ We’ve been renovating our Edwardian home since 2019. We’ve done a lot of the work ourselves so it’s been a steep learning curve but we’ve still really enjoyed it. Our bathroom isn’t huge but it’s full of lovely original features, such as this beautiful diamond window. In fact, I fell in love with the house as soon as I saw it! We added a scaffold board shelf to display some of my accessories and upcycled the vanity unit with Hornblower paint by Frenchic.

@rachs_home_n_life

Creating a calm and inviting space was the priority when renovating our family home, and the kitchen was no exception. Using different textures and timeless styles are always key design moves for me. You can’t really go wrong with a Shaker-style kitchen and a traditional stone floor! I think combining new pieces with old finds has really helped to make the kitchen feel as comfortable and relaxing as any other area in our home, and that’s really important to me.

OAchieve texture by adding patterns and prints that look like they’ve been pulled straight out of a school reference book. Think orderly lines of butterflies and bugs, detailed botanical illustrations and playful animals. Foliage is a key element to this look, so if you don’t have green fingers, include it in your wallpaper or fabric.

O Deep greens and blues evoke a calming atmosphere that’s ideal for concentrating on cosy autumn activities, whether that’s settling down with a copy of HomeStyle or enjoying your favourite Scandi drama. Don’t be afraid to delve into dark shades and offset the moody tones with warm highlights in ochre and mustard. The light from candles and warm white bulbs cast a comforting glow against dark walls and will help create snug vibes on winter evenings.

OA sweep of parquet-effect flooring will upgrade the scholastic vibe. For top marks, finish off with piles of vintage books.

O When we think of ‘cosy colours’, white isn’t usually in the running, but it’s time to reconsider this pale shade. With clever use of texture and light hues, you can take a plain white room from bare to beautiful.

O Choose a base of off-white shades that have warm undertones. When making your selections, compare each one to brilliant white to help you see the delicate hints of colour more clearly. The whites in our moodboard have a touch of red in them, so we’ve paired them with soft greens for a subtle sense of contrast. If you prefer creamier shades, try a tinge of pale blue instead.

O Soft textiles are key to establishing an inviting atmosphere, regardless of the colour you’re working with. Pile up velvets, textured linen and faux fur for rich depth, irresistible warmth and the ultimate cosy vibe.

anUnderhour! Speedy solutions that can be achieved in less than 60 minutes

Rearranging the knick knacks, photos and books on your shelves will makeover the feel of a room in a flash. Start by taking everything off the shelves and giving them a good dust, then give the shelf a wipe down. Pack away anything you haven’t noticed yourself looking at for a while. This will streamline the number of items on display so that they all have a chance to be enjoyed. You can circulate these items and bring out the pieces you’ve packed away when you need a refresh in a few months’ time.

Clear the decks

If ugly sockets and switches are spoiling the look of your kitchen, propping up a few large items, such as stylish breadboards will keep them hidden away. Layering up boards will create a textured effect that will look intentional, rather than a lone board that might feel out of place. Pair them with a utensil jar or a pretty bottle of olive oil to complete the transformation. If breadboards aren’t your thing, try herb plants in pots, they’ll cover a larger area as they grow and you’ll forget those eyesores were ever there!

4

No matter how hard you try to keep things neat, everyday items will always find their way out of cupboards and start cluttering up work surfaces. Save time by containing all those items you like to have close at hand on a stylish tray. They’ll be easy to access, and faster to tidy up, which means your worktops will stay clear for longer. It’s a great trick on your dressing table too, opt for easy-to-clean materials, such as glass, plastic or lacquered wood so that you can quickly wipe away spills or stray powder and keep things clean.

Add a sense of drama with a statement lampshade. These large features help to ground a room and pull furniture together. They’re the icing on the cake of your schemes and make the overall effect more ’complete’. Remember that pendant lampshades will appear smaller when they are hung in the room, so measure up to get a clear idea of the size of shade that would suit your room best, or choose something that feels slightly too large when it’s in your hands in the shop.

Pick up a preloved piece of furniture and transform it into something that really feels like yours. Be brave and paint it in a colour that will turn a piece into a focal point for the space. Try this dramatic peacock shade from Dunelm, or go for a softer effect with pale pink or lilac – it will still be a showstopper. Pop on new handles for a luxe feel – the heavier the better – and keep the old ones for a future project. You can also line the bottoms of each drawer with unused sections of wallpaper as it’s a great way to make the most of leftover ends of rolls or large-scale samples.

Turn a neglected wall into a flexible gallery space by spending the day putting up narrow picture ledge shelves. Hang them at around eye level so that you can easily change the display. Try it on the wall behind your headboard or sofa, or alongside a dining table. Walls with doors and windows can be a little tricky, but you’ll need less paper to cover a larger area. You can also have fun with pattern matching your blinds or curtains to the new walls. If you’ve got some extra time and leftover paper, think about ways to use it up, like popping it into picture frames, or using it to wrap storage boxes, or see Number 8 for more ideas on using up old paper.

Create a feature Adding texture to walls creates a modern look that always appears high-end. You’ll need to attach small strips of wood or MDF to a wall, then paint the slats and wall in the same stylish shade. If you’re using MDF the strips should be sealed before you attach them to the wall, while pine or wood may need to be treated with a knot solution to stop excess oils spoiling the final finish. If you’d like to create a continuous effect by placing lots of slats closely together, use the edge of a spare as a ruler to help you mark out the gaps between the slats. This will be faster and more accurate than trying to do it by eye. Attach the slats using a liquid nails-type glue and tap in a few veneer pins or brad nails for extra strength and a long-lasting look.

WELCOME HOME

Begin by opening all the boxes and mix up the planks you’ve bought. There can sometimes be subtle variations in colour between boxes and this will help to avoid an obvious change in your finished floor. It’s also a great opportunity to arrange your planks so that you don’t lay identical designs next to one another, which can spoil the effect. It’s tempting to start by laying your first line against the wall, but you can’t rely on walls to be straight. Begin your first line of planks a little way away from the wall, then work towards it for a neater look.

Sometimes the answer to a new look is right under your feet. Laminate plank flooring can be installed over a weekend, especially with a pair of helping hands. Whichever flooring you choose will come with its own set of instructions, but there are tips worth keeping in mind before you start.

Exterior eggshell in Hudson, £36 per 1L, Graham & Brown Rust-Oleum matt finish furniture paint in Graphite, £18.99 per 750ml; Rust-Oleum chalky floor paint in Graphite, £38.99 per 2.5L, The Range Capture Collection flooring in Painted Oak White, £37.99 per sq m, Quick-Step

Make a grand entrance by spending your weekend renovating your staircase. If you’re planning to use a specialist floor paint, like Rust-Oleum, you won’t need to sand everything down completely. Give the whole staircase a rub with fine grain sandpaper to give a nice ‘tooth’ for the paint to stick to and fill in any holes or dents. You can paint every other step so that you’ll still be able to get upstairs when nature calls, or when it’s time to go to bed. Leave it to dry overnight and tackle the alternate steps the next day. Wear fluffy socks to avoid scuffs and marks.

12

On the up

Revamping the front door improves kerb appeal and puts a smile on your face when you return after a hard day. Use an exterior eggshell, or specialist uPVC paint for secure adhesion, protection from the weather and long-lasting good looks. Begin at the edges of the door so that they have the longest time to dry, they’re likely to stick and spoil if the door is shut before the paint has had a chance to harden, even if it appears to be dry. Then move on to the moulding around any panels or glass, then to the panels themselves. When complete, work on the horizontal rails and finish with the vertical rails. Working in this order will help to avoid ‘tide lines’ in the paintwork. Take your time between coats and make sure each one is fully dry before you start the next. Complete the new look with a stylish knocker.

A LADDER TO SUCCESS

If you’re lucky enough to have a dedicated room for your home office, keep it looking serene by using a combination of open shelving and closed cupboards. If budget allows, fitted office cabinets will make the maximum use of your space. This will allow you to keep the most often-used items close to hand, while less attractive objects can be hidden. When planning an office layout, try and position your desk area in front of a window to make the most daylight.

Say goodbye to boring black office chairs and pimp your desk with one of these beauties

In a large open-plan room, it can help to create a dedicated area for your home office. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using wallpaper. Choose a design that either soothes or inspires you and use it just up to picture-rail height to allow the rest of the room’s décor to flow around it. Alternatively, you could use paint to create a similar effect. Keep the lines crisp with masking tape, and experiment by using painted triangles, rectangles or circles to zone your working corner.

Blend in If you only have space for a home office area in your living room, help it to blend seamlessly with the rest of the room by using furniture with the same aesthetic. Choose a desk and chair that use similar materials and colours as your living room scheme and look for designs that feature slimline or hairpin legs to encourage your eye to flow uninterrupted around the room.

Mix it up

When you’re sitting at your desk, there’s nothing more distracting than unwanted glare on your computer screen, especially in a south-facing room that gets direct sunlight for most of the day. As well as considering your office furniture, it’s really important to choose the right window treatment to allow you to work comfortably.

Manhattan home office with Manhattan bedroom in Dove with Lilah Satin Brass handles, from £2,000, The Home Collection, Sharps TOP TIP Use task lighting to help zone your office space

If you need to put your home office in your bedroom, try to not let it dominate the space. Fitted wardrobes and a desk area that incorporates matching cabinetry will help the office to blend seamlessly with the rest of the space. Add softening touches to office furniture, such as a plush velvet office chair, a cosy rug or dimmable lighting. You could also use a decorative folding screen to hide the office too.

Take time to position your chair correctly. Your feet should be flat on the ground and your knees bent, but with a slope from your hips to your knees. Relax when sitting into your chair, making sure you have your bottom against the seat back with your shoulder blades touching the backrest of the chair. Remove any obstacles from under your desk. Get up!

Try to mix up your position and consider a laptop stand that will allow you to work standing up. It’s fine to get creative – especially if you’re still working from home. 02 STACK SMART

Be strategic with your dishwasher and fill it up as much as possible to ensure you only use it when it is totally full. Utilise the space as efficiently as you can – pack cups, glasses and cooking utensils on the top shelf, leaving space below for plates to be neatly stacked in a row, along with bowls and casserole dishes. By stacking smartly, you’ll need to use the dishwasher less and thus reduce your energy bills.

OHMAXX smart plug, £24.99 for a pack of three, Amazon

Vampire devices, such as TVs, games consoles, computers and microwaves, left on standby cost households an average of £147 a year, even when they’re not being used. Switching them off at the wall to save money makes sense but that isn’t always practical if sockets are hidden behind desks, beneath TV units or covered up by white goods. Consider fitting smart plugs that allow you to simply turn your sockets on or off from your mobile phone.

One of the most simple yet effective things you can do to cut your electricity bill is to keep an eye on the energy label on your appliances. A newly revamped (2021) rating system indicates an A to G scale with the letter A as the highest class and G as the lowest. Pre-2021, this was a more confusing A+, A++ etc rating but this simplified version makes it easier for you to save energy by choosing a high-efficiency appliance.

88 yourhomestyle.uk

ENERGY SAVING TIPS

Although an A-class home appliance can be a financial investment initially, it will help you to lower your bills and bring huge savings in the long run.

TOP TIP

While we can’t control global economics, we can help to ease the pain of winter fuel bills a little by learning how to get smart and stop using unnecessary levels of electricity. Scan our 10 savvy solutions on how to save money by making a few small changes…

01 FIX THE LEAK

06 GO AU NATUREL

By taking part in an energy audit, you can find out exactly where you’re using the most power and how you can cut this down. It will help you get a better handle on your spending. Many energy companies offer audits to help you pinpoint exactly where you can save power and how you can do this.

NEXT MONTH: HOW TO CUT YOUR HE ATING US A GE

Using 85 per cent less energy than regular bulbs, by replacing your standard bulbs with LEDs you could shave money off your electricity bill. LEDs also last longer – used for six hours a day, they can run for almost 12 years – so you’ll not only save on your energy costs, but you won’t need to replace them so often.

It’s tempting to turn your lights on and close the curtains early in the evening, but by keeping them open until sunset you can maximise the natural heat and light from the sun and save up to around 60 per cent on your lighting, compared to constantly having lights on.

10 WASH WITH CARE

STAY IN MOTION

07 COLD AS ICE

When it comes to washing your clothes, longer cycles, such as a 3.5-hour ‘eco’ wash vs a ‘quick wash’, use less energy and water and take better care of your clothes. By lowering the temperature to 30ºC instead of 40ºC you can save up to 60 per cent of your energy consumption on washing. To reduce costs even further, use a machine with energy-saving credentials, such as the AEG models with ProSense technology. Each load is weighed to provide a tailored cycle.

04 LIGHT UP Modern LED lightbulbs are the most eco-friendly option you can buy.

Consider fitting easy-to-install motion sensors, so that your lights only come on when you enter a room and turn off when you leave. They’re ideal for hallways or kitchens, and if you have children who are too small to reach the light switch, or if you only want a landing light to turn on if they wake up overnight.

09

05 GET ORGANISED Every minute that your lights are on it costs you money. Consider using smart bulbs that can be scheduled to turn on and off at set times. Smart scheduling means that your lights are on only when you need them to be and not a moment longer, saving you money.

‘I found the dining chairs on eBay at £80 for the set and the John Lewis & Partners dining table was only £100 in the sale’

The custom vinyl floor tiles from Atrafloor (since closed), was Helen’s biggest splurge. ‘The flooring cost around £800 but it’s been down for five years, and you can wipe it clean, which is great with young kids,’ she says.

Picking prints that have a similar content or colourway will help to create continuity. ‘Quite a few of the prints are related to New York as we went there for our honeymoon and fifth wedding anniversary,’ says Helen. ‘We also love going to photobooths and framing the black and white strips. This area changes all the time when I get bored, so some of the frames probably have about three different prints inside them. The embroidered hoop is the latest addition.’

This compact sideboard also doubles up as a pull-out desk so Helen can work from home two days a week. ‘I’ve seen similar ones for £500, but this was only £30 on Facebook Marketplace,’ she says. Inexpensive plywood shelves treated with varnish link the space to the kitchen. ‘Alex tries to put football trophies here, but they just get moved,’ she laughs. For an extra easy pop of colour, Helen has finished this corner with a display of favourite books.

‘You don’t need to spend a lot of money to make a kitchen expensive’look

A white ceramic sink and tap blends into the worktop, which helps keep things pared-back in a small space. ‘We just wanted a single mixer tap rather than separate hot and cold taps,’ explains Helen. ‘It helps keep things as unfussy as possible.’ The flat white wall tiles are another wise choice for simplicity, while the black grout adds a cool, modern feel. Helen keeps colourful tableware on corner shelves – a clever way to make the most out of empty wall space.

KEEP IT COOL

As Helen and Alex wanted to keep the kitchen from feeling hemmed in, the couple decided against wall cupboards. ‘Later on, we added plywood shelves,’ says Helen. ‘Although they can gather dust, they work for us and I like the open feel, plus it’s nice to have stylish kitchen accessories out on display’

For two years the dining room walls and floorboards were white before we added some colour. Due to a deep access space under the house, a lot of sand and dust would come up through the floorboards, so we opted for vinyl flooring with a bold print. This led to the pink feature wall in the dining room. Eventually, we’d like to build a rear extension to create a bigger kitchen-diner, but we’ve made the most of the space for now. I love how bright and cheerful it feels. When you’re at home a lot, it’s just what you need.

‘The teal doors make the kitchen look more expensive than the £1,300 it actually cost,’ she says I was on maternity leave when we bought this place, so we had no money at first. After staying with my parents for eight weeks, we lived upstairs for a year until we were both working full-time and we could start updating the house. My mum brought us meals on wheels, and we had a kettle and microwave in our son’s bedroom. After knocking the wall down and installing a steel beam, the door from the hallway was blocked up along with a frosted glass internal window into the dining room. We spotted the teal kitchen in IKEA, which was perfect for our new L-shaped layout. There wasn’t room for all the appliances though, so our washing machine is under the stairs and the fridge-freezer is in the dining area.

With lots of colour in the dining room and on the kitchen units, Helen kept the walls and floors simple with flat white wall tiles and hexagon mosaic floor tiles.

MY EXPERIENCE

I’m lucky that my husband, Alex, is a qualified plasterer, his brother is a plumber and he’s friends with a builder and an electrician. This meant that there was a lot of job skill swaps going on, which saved us money. Alex and his stepdad also fitted the kitchen, did the tiling and removed the old back boiler.

MY PROBLEM LIVING ROOM

About

HOW I MADE IT WORK I played around with the layout to create separate zones: a cosy snug area, a relaxing living space and a sunny dining room. I decorated one wall with a vibrant mural and filled the rest of the room with lots of plants, a bright sofa and colourful accessories.

MY FAVOURITE PART All of my plants. They really thrive in this bright and sunny space. Before I’m Sarah Evans, 43, a yoga instructor and breast cancer charity CoppaFeel! advocate (coppafeel.org). Above the fireplace hangs a piece of artwork picked up from a CoppaFeel! charity art auction. Paint your fireplace a dark navy shade to create a striking backdrop for your prints. Sarah picked up the painted ceramic hand from a yoga retreat in Spain

MAKE PET-FRIENDLYIT

Busy homes with pets and young children need furnishings that are upholstered in hard-wearing materials, so they stand the test of time. For Sarah’s living room, she hunted down a sofa that had wipe-clean covers so they wouldn’t get ruined by Freda’s mucky paws. This sofa from Snug not only looks fantastic but it’s very durable, too. If your current sofa is looking tatty, consider getting covers made and go for a removable, machinewashable option to make your life a little bit easier.

TREASURESPERSONAL Give a piece of furniture character by styling it up with accessories that have a story. Sarah’s favourite pieces include ceramic jugs from her travels in Spain and Africa, an antique radio and a framed four-leaf clover, found on her grandad’s allotment. The vintage cabinet ties in with the storied feel. ‘My snug area is very narrow so I needed a slimline piece that would slot into place,’ explains Sarah. ‘I found this 1970s sideboard that’s been upcycled with hairpin legs on Etsy.’

HANG A MURAL

Create a quick and easy feature wall with a statement mural. Unlike a wallpaper, which is a repeated pattern, a mural is a made-to-measure print that fills your wall. Sarah chose the Botanique Jungle design from Graham & Brown as it includes all of the colours in her living room, helping to tie the scheme together. ‘The first thing visitors see when they walk in is the showstopping mural. It makes a great first impression,’ says Sarah. ‘The tropical print echoes all the plants in the room, which gives my home a jungle-inspired feel.’

Add personality to all-white walls with plants and bring natural texture and colour to a space. These macramé hanging planters, which Sarah made using a crafting kit, are a great way of filling empty-looking corners

When I moved into my house in March 2022, this living room was very plain and boring. It was lacking in colour and personality, and I didn’t know how to decorate the tricky Y-shaped layout. At the time, I was receiving treatment for breast cancer, so I couldn’t take on a big decorating project. Instead, I looked for ways that would create maximum impact but with minimum effort. The starting point for the décor was the mustard and emerald velvet sofas and then I found yellow velvet dining chairs in Next that matched perfectly. All the other accessories, like the artwork and rugs, are bits and pieces that I have collected over the years. I love to be surrounded by the things that remind me of my life; places I’ve been to and the people I’ve met. When I first moved in here, my friends and family all chipped in to help me. They unpacked boxes of accessories that had been stored in my parents’ garage for months. In one day, they hung up artwork, plants and built furniture, turning this bland room into a space that reflects my home style. Now my room is finished, this space makes me feel so relaxed. It’s the perfect place for me to rest and recover after treatment. Everything has a story to tell, and spending time in here brings back so many happy memories.

About me

By using a computer-generated design to visualise the space, Amy Davies Pereira got the bathroom that she always wanted

Where do I start! The room was old-fashioned, dull and, to be honest, almost unsafe with its dated pipework. The room just felt unloved and wasn’t a space that you could relax in after a busy day. The tiles were bland and boring, and the shower had seen better days.

Gone is the boring white and black bathroom with its dated mosaic tiles, and in its place is new sanitaryware, a vibrant cool colour scheme and a mix of textured and patterned tiles

MY PROBLEM BATHROOM

MY FAVOURITE PART I absolutely love the green wall tiles. I adore the fact that each one is a slightly different shade and the beautiful sheen they have when they catch the light at different times during the day. It’s so wonderful that I can have a restful bath or take a nice power shower in luxury. Before I’m Amy Davies Pereira, 48, and I’m an interiors blogger @littlehouseinlondon. My home is a three-bed Victorian mid-terrace in East London. I live with my husband, Alex, and children, Roman, 18, and Ava, 15, plus our cavapoo, Bea.

MY SANCTUARYDREAM

My room... ‘I’m over the moon with how amazing bathroomthehasturnedout–Iloveit!’

We stripped the whole room back and had everything re-plastered and replaced, including the original pipework. I got a CAD design from Natalie Nicholson Designs to help understand what was achievable in a relatively small space. Then it was a case of being brave and committing to the bold wall tiles and colour scheme.

‘As soon as I saw the pink vanity unit, I fell in love with it and knew that it would be my basis for the scheme,’ says Amy who painted the walls in a muted pink to tie in with the statement piece. ‘The large sink has a traditional yet modern feel and the cupboard underneath is great for keeping toiletries.’ For extra storage, Amy had cupboardscustom-madedesignedto go either side of the sink. ‘I painted the doors the same green colour as the skirting boards and finished off the look with shell handles that complement the other chrome details.’

‘Because the green wall tiles are quite striking, I didn’t want anything too overpowering for the floor. Even though these star tiles, from CTD Tiles, are quite busy, the subtle grey colour softens them, and they really complement the space.

‘I’m always excited for the end of the day when I can relax in my gorgeous bath’

Style advice

To tie the whole look together, I painted the skirting boards in the shade Pleat by Little Greene, which I think really lifts the floor, too. A leafy houseplant, bath mat and accessories in natural materials, like this wooden stool and woven basket, add texture and interest to the space.’

‘I really liked the idea of having shelving in the bath and shower area for all my lovely toiletries. While traditional, these lovely chrome corner shelves were the perfect size and really matched the style of the shower,’ says Amy. When drilling into tiles, cover any surfaces that could get damaged. Once you decide where on the tile you want to drill, cover with masking tape and mark the spot with a pen. Make sure you’re using the correct drill bit (this will depend on the type of tile) and be sure to use waterproof sealant around any holes and gaps.

‘I can spend hours in the tub now,’ says Amy. ‘This bargain bath rack is from Amazon and it’s got plenty of room for my bath salts and a cheeky glass of wine’

HAVE A START POINT

MY EXPERIENCE

When we moved into this place, we slowly worked our way through the rooms, decorating them one by one. The bathroom was really crying out for some love. I wanted this space to make a real impact, yet still be in keeping with the Victorian style of the house. Because the room is quite small, I asked a computer-aided designer (CAD) to help with the layout. A roll-top bath was top of my wishlist. Getting the CAD plan helped us see how the tub would look in the room and what space we’d have left. We asked our builder to work out what plumbing needed to be replaced or moved and having the visuals to hand made this so much easier. When we removed the original tiles, the plaster all fell off the wall and exposed the brickwork, so we needed to find a plasterer, which consequently delayed all the other tradespeople. Putting in a heated towel rail was a must-have for me, and the best place was above the toilet, where the piping could be replaced and hidden in the walls. One of my favourite features is the luxury shower from Burlington Bathrooms. It’s made such a difference to our day-to-day routine. Looking back, I think that with an old house like this it was over ambitious to imagine that the project would take a couple of weeks. In the end, it took about two months as I had a huge snag list to work through. Now that it’s all finished, I’m absolutely over the moon with how amazing the bathroom has turned out – I love it! I’m always so excited for the end of the day when I can relax in my gorgeous roll-top bath.

5 On the drop leaf of the desk, measure a rectangle 4cm smaller on each side than the size of the drop leaf. Lightly draw the outline of the rectangle in pencil centrally on the surface of the drop leaf. Using a craft knife, a metal ruler and a cutting mat, cut a piece of wallpaper to the same size as the rectangle and use spray adhesive to glue it firmly to the surface of the drop leaf. Gently glide your hands over the surface of the wallpaper to remove any air bubbles and ensure a smooth, flat finish.

3 Give the interior of the desk, including the internal drawer fronts, two coats of ochre furniture paint, allowing the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying the second.

1

Begin by carefully removing the handles of the desk using a screwdriver. Be sure to store all the fittings safely so you don’t lose any pieces, as you’ll need them later. Use a sanding block to give the surface a light key to help the paint adhere better. Once you’ve finished sanding, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Allow to dry.

6 Cut four lengths of washi tape slightly longer than each side of the wallpaper rectangle. Carefully stick them along each side of the wallpaper, slightly overlapping the edges. Run your finger along the tape to ensure it is firmly adhered to the desk. Use a craft knife to make a 45-degree cut in the overlap of washi tape at each corner. Gently peel away the excess tape to create a neat corner. Press each corner down firmly to ensure it is well adhered to the surface.

2 Give the exterior of the desk, including the external drawer fronts, two coats of green furniture paint, allowing the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying the second. Once the paint is dry, replace the handles on the desk.

A Claire Manton, Creative Director and Founder at Claire’s Crafthouse, comments… Woodworm is relatively easy to spot, but ascertaining if it’s active or historic is difficult. Look for telltale signs, such as clusters of small bore holes. If an infestation is active, you may well see what looks like fine powdery sawdust beneath the piece, or even dead or active beetles. It’s more difficult to spot this debris if a piece has recently been moved or cleaned. It’s worth looking inside pieces and removing drawers to inspect the carcass interior for evidence. Experts can spot previously treated woodworm, but should you inadvertently buy a piece that you later realise is affected it’s always best to treat it straight away for peace of mind. Keep it away from other wood until you have finished working on it. Sand off any varnish or other finishes on the furniture so that raw wood is exposed, ready for treatment. Leaving any finishes on could render these solutions ineffective. Finally, brush or spray an anti-woodworm solution onto the raw wood of your furniture, paying attention to internal areas of the carcass and drawers, as well as the external parts.

Q

Q I am trying to live greener and I often see furniture items I like on local freecycle sites and in second-hand shops. However, I am concerned about woodworm and other pests. How can I check before purchase – or treat afterwards – to ensure anything I bring into the home is clean, safe and not going to cause problems?

Converting an attic room into an additional bedroom or office area is a practical way to maximise on space. Because most attics have sloping ceilings we suggest fitted wardrobes with angled sides. The higher point of the wardrobe can be used for full-length storage; as the depth decreases you can fit shelves, cupboards and drawers. Fitted wardrobes offer a streamlined look and they are also an entirely practical storage option that can be customised to individual needs and design preferences. Full-height wardrobes facilitate double hanging, while alcove space can also be utilised with additional fitted furniture as well as made to measure pieces for optimal storage options.

Q We’d love some really good storage in our attic bedroom – what are the options with fitted wardrobes and are they really the best use of space?

LayRed flooring in York Stone, £47.99 per sq m, Moduleo Claire’s Crafthouse sells eco-friendly furniture paints, as well as offering bespoke furniture restyling

We want to replace our open-plan kitchen flooring. We have tiles at the moment – do we need to remove these if we want to lay LVT? Any advice on sub floor and underlay would be great too.

Elise fitted bedroom furniture in Charcoal, from £4,000, Trend Interiors

First, ensure that the height of your LVT is not going to be too high when placed over existing tiles, as this can mean you’re unable to open doors and cabinets. Moduleo has lots of options with the stick-down and free-floating systems, some of which may suit you. Our newest is the luxury option, Moduleo LayRed. This is our engineered vinyl flooring designed with integrated underlay, which has the capability to be laid over existing flooring and is perfect for uneven floors.

A Matthew Brook, National Sales Manager for Moduleo says… Luxury vinyl flooring can be laid over existing tiles, but not on every occasion as it really does depend on the existing flooring that is already down. There are underlay options for using with stick-down LVT and there are also click systems that will allow you to install over existing flooring. However there are a few things to consider...

Abigail Bentley, Cardiff A Phil Etherden, Managing Director at The Albion Bath Company, says… With a smaller space, the trick is to maximise the visible floor area, so use a free-standing bath on feet or a plinth. Don’t be tempted into cramming large items into a small room. The effect will be to lose all aesthetic value while making the room look cluttered.

Tubby Torre plinth bath, from £2,541, The Albion Bath Company

Futura 5 woodburning stove, from £1,295, Stovax If you have a DIY dilemma or home question, improvementemailusat homestyle@ourmedia.co.uk or write to Ask the Experts, HomeStyle, Our Media Ltd, Eagle House, Bristol, BS1 4ST.

Q I’d love a wood burning stove this winter but I don’t have a chimney. Is it still possible and if not, what are my options for a similar effect?

WENEEDYOURQUESTIONS!

Q My bathroom is quite small, is it possible to have a roll-top bath and what about the tap in terms of plumbing?

Megan Pedreira, Kent A Michael Coke, Biomass Products Development Manager at Stovax, has this advice… If you don’t have a chimney, you may be able to install a pre-fabricated one that works in the same way as a normal chimney would. There are options for you to have one that either runs internally or externally to your property, and allows you to enjoy a stove or fire in your home. Your retailer will be able to advise which type is best for your installation. This will allow you to have a woodburning stove, such as Stovax Futura 5, despite not having a chimney.

A gas stove may be an option as many models are available as balanced flue versions, which do not need a chimney, but rather a twin-wall pipe to vent directly through an outside wall. Air for combustion is drawn in through the outer pipe while the inner pipe removes the combustion gases to the exterior of the property.

When choosing the bath, it is important to consider whether you want a traditional or contemporary feel; bathtubs are available in many styles with roll-top or flat top, single or double ended, along with many possible feet or plinth choices. There is also the option to have a freestanding bath that is designed to fit flush against a wall or even to use as a shower bath. At Albion, we wanted to get the fun factor of a free-standing tub into a small bathroom so the Tubby roll-top was born. With its generous depth, you can get fully submerged but at only 1,200mm long, it can grace a small space that may otherwise be redundant. It can be used with taps that are either wall-mounted or on top of our sturdy standpipes. There is also a great range of over-bath shower systems for a luxury look that is still practical for busy family life.

Expert advice

If solid fuel or gas appliances are not an option, an electric product is suitable for homes without a chimney; simply plugging into a standard mains socket can offer a stunning flame effect, with or without the heat for year-round ambience.

As part of our mission to find ways to make the most of every meal, we asked Luisa Coates of thermometers brand, Thermapen, for advice on how to correctly cool and reheat leftovers so that we can all get involved in batch cooking safely. ‘Cooling leftovers should be done within three-to-four hours,’ says Luisa. ‘Remove food from hot dishes and put it into containers. Cover and let it cool down to room temperature (20°C) and store leftovers in your fridge for no more than two days. Reheated food should be warmed until it reaches and maintains 70°C or above for two minutes,’ Luisa advises. ‘The food should be piping hot throughout. Use a Thermapen thermometer to accurately check the internal temperature of your leftovers.’

COOK’S TIP

Tuesday PARSNIP, BRUSSELS SPROUT AND BACON POTATO CAKES

COOKING TIME 1 hour

ł 1 chicken or vegetable stock cube, made up to 600ml ł 300g rigatoni pasta ł 300g leftover cooked lamb, diced or shredded ł 100g Cheddar, grated ł 100g mozzarella, sliced 1METHOD

6. Toss the parsnips with salt, pepper and 1 tbsp of the oil. Spread over an oven tray and roast for about 10 minutes until they are beginning to caramelise. Remove, allow to cool then roughly chop.

ł

2 While the parsnips are roasting, boil the potatoes in salted water until soft, about 20 minutes. Drain well and mash while warm. Keep your mash as dry as possible so that the cakes hold together; if it seems wet, stir it over a low heat for a few minutes.

3 Cook the sprouts in salted boiling water for about 5 minutes. Drain and cut into quarters.

5 Keep the oil left in the pan to fry the cakes. Mix the veg with the bacon and season. Dust your hands with flour and mould into burger-sized patties. Add the remaining oil to the frying pan, place over a medium heat and fry the cakes in batches until golden brown. Keep the cakes warm in an oven heated to around 160°C/140°C/Gas Mark 3 while you finish making your batch, to prevent the cakes from going cold. T

For the chips

Preheat the oven to 220°C/200°C Fan/Gas Mark 7. Leaving the skin on, cut the potatoes into fries. Place onto a lined baking tray and drizzle with ½ tbsp oil; season with oregano, sea salt and black pepper. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until golden. Finely slice the half onion. Zest the lemon and quarter. Put the onion into a small bowl with the juice from half the lemon and a pinch of sea salt. Stir well, then set aside. Halve the tomatoes. Thinly slice the half cucumber. Remove the mint leaves from their stalks and finely chop (leave some leaves for garnish). Mix the chopped mint and yogurt together in another small bowl. Season with sea salt and black pepper. To make the wraps, place the flour into a mixing bowl and season with sea salt. Slowly add 200ml water, until you have a smooth batter. Heat a medium frying pan with 1 tsp oil on a medium heat. Pour in half the batter and swirl around. Cook for 3 minutes on each side, until turning golden brown. Set aside. Repeat with the remaining batter.

For the zest ł ½ red onion ł 1 lemon ł sea salt

Place a large frying pan over a high heat. In a small bowl, whisk the gram flour, ground turmeric and black salt with 6 tablespoons water until a smooth batter forms.

4 Carefully fold the rice paper in half. It will crack a little – but try to do it in one gentle but swift action, folding like a quesadilla. Toast gently for another 20–30 seconds, turning once.

For the filling ł 300g free-range pork strips

ł

ł

2 Lay one rice paper sheet onto the hot pan, and toast for 30 seconds. Turn down the heat to medium and smear the rice paper with a tablespoon of the gram flour batter, making sure it forms a thin layer that almost reaches the edges but doesn’t spill over. Sprinkle the top with the spring onion greens, then add small blobs of vegan cream cheese and scatter the vegan ham (if using) across the ‘pizza’.

September 2022 127 Street food Chocolate brioche doughnuts with bay caramel custard and nib sugar PREPARATION TIME 1 hour 10 minutes COOKING TIME 10 minutes SERVES 12 For the chocolate brioche ł 220g strong white bread flour ł 30g cocoa powder ł 30g caster sugar ł 7g fast-action dried yeast ł ¼ tsp fine sea salt ł 3 large eggs, lightly beaten ł 125g unsalted butter, softened a little, small pieces ł flavourless vegetable oil ł 1.5 litres vegetable oil, such as sunflower or rapeseed for deep-frying For the bay caramel ł 3 medium dried bay leaves ł 70g caster sugar ł 2 tbsp water ł 50ml double cream ł 35g unsalted butter, chopped ł generous pinch of sea salt For the custard ł 80ml whole milk ł 45ml double cream ł 2 egg yolks, lightly beaten ł 25g caster sugar ł 15g cornflour For the nib sugar ł 10g cacao nibs ł 65g caster sugar ł 1 heaped tsp ground cinnamon ł pinch of fine sea salt 1METHOD

Simmer until the mixture turns a deep amber colour. Remove from the heat and stir in the cream and then stir in the butter and salt. Set aside.

6 To make the bay caramel custard; place the bay leaves and a few spoonfuls of the sugar in a spice or coffee grinder and blitz to a powder. Mix with the rest of the sugar. Place the sugar and water in a small pan, stir to combine and set over a medium heat. Bring to a simmer, swirling the pan now and then (don’t stir) until the sugar has dissolved.

Transfer to the baking sheet and repeat leaving a 3cm space between each ball. Cover with oiled cling film and set aside for about 1 hour, or until increased in size by 50 per cent.

10 Remove with a slotted spoon to a wire rack. While they are warm, cut a slit in the side and pipe in a generous amount of the caramel custard, then roll in the nib sugar. Best served warm! The by Sue (Quadrille,Quinn YukiPhotography:£10)Sugiura

To make brioche, place flour, cocoa, sugar, yeast and salt in a stand mixer and stir to combine. Add the eggs. Using the dough hook attachment, mix on low speed for 5 minutes, stopping to scrape down the bowl, until all the flour is incorporated. Increase the speed to medium and mix for 10 minutes.

8 To make nib sugar, finely grind cacao nibs to a powder. Combine with the sugar, cinnamon and salt and place in a shallow bowl. 9 To fry, place enough oil in a large heavy pan to come 5cm up the sides and heat to 170–180°C.

Gently flatten on your work surface, bring the edges together into the middle. Turn the dough over so that the join is at the bottom. Cup your hand over the dough and, using firm pressure, roll on the work surface to make a smooth tight ball.

3 Tip the dough out onto a work surface and press out to form a rectangle about 1cm thick. Fold one-third of the dough over onto itself, then do the same with the other side. Repeat with the top and the bottom. Place the dough, seam-side down, in a large oiled bowl, cover with oiled cling film and set aside somewhere warm until doubled in size.

2 Reduce the speed to low and add the butter slowly. When the butter is all used up, increase the speed to medium and mix for a further 10 minutes, or until the dough is shiny and elastic.

4 Line a large baking sheet with baking paper. When the dough has risen, press your hand into it to release some air and break into 12 pieces.

7 For the custard, place the milk and cream in a small pan. Bring almost to the boil, then remove from the heat. In a bowl, stir egg yolks, sugar, cornflour and just enough of the hot milk mixture together to make a loose paste. Gradually stir in the rest of the milk, then transfer back into the pan. Cook over a gentle heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Don’t let it boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the caramel, then return the pan to a gentle heat, stirring, until thick. Don’t let the mixture get too hot or it will separate; use a balloon whisk if needed. Transfer to a disposable piping bag, fasten and leave to cool completely.

Have a wire rack lined with paper towels ready. Lower 2 or 3 doughnuts at a time into the hot oil. Fry for about 1 minute on each side until puffed up and golden. Adjust the temperature as needed to ensure the oil doesn’t get too hot or cool.

130 yourhomestyle.uk IN CONVERSATION WITH ScarlettElizabethPetrides

At around 6.30am, I wake up with my little girl, Meiri. I head to the office at 9am to check emails before catching up with the product team on how any new designs are developing and to review campaigns – right now, it’s Christmas. At 1pm, I stop for lunch and take our dog, Lamu, for a walk. The rest of the afternoon is spent replying to emails, moodboarding and painting. In the evening, once Meiri is in bed, my husband, Alex, and I will have dinner and catch up on a TV series. How did you get into homeware design? I completed an art foundation course at Central Saint Martins before going on to design homeware and prints for retailers, including Debenhams and John Lewis & Partners. In 2015, I founded Elizabeth Scarlett, translating my paintings onto fabrics. I learned about the sales side of things at each stage of the journey, refining my style along the way. What inspires you? Nature and wildlife – I’m always looking for simple beauty in the everyday. I also love to travel and I’m never without my sketchbook. When I’m relaxed and life is a little quieter, I find it’s the best time to see the magic! What would you save in a house fire?

How do you want your designs to make people feel? I want to bring joyfulness, colour and detail into our customers’ homes. Hopefully, people feel like they’ve discovered something that’s a bit of them!

What’s your proudest career moment? Seeing our products on This Morning with Holly Willoughby. I couldn’t believe that the business had come so far! What’s next? We’ve got some stunning pyjamas coming; I can’t wait to grab a pair for myself. Shop Elizabeth Scarlett at @elizabethscarlett.elizabethscarlett.com;
