Project 01: Fleeting Vessels a.) Delamination and Deduction My first task was to trace out 12 different shapes from a painting for further analysis. I chose “Still Life with Accordian,” by French artist Le Corbusier. I then recreated the painting using only the solid shapes that I traced out. The shapes have been laid out on grids showing their solid and voided variations.

b.) Strategy Diagram I separated the bright and dark-colored shapes into foreground, middle ground and background colors, and laid them out in an axonometric. The key takeway is that as the axonometric moves right, the bright/ warm colors become darker/colder. 1.) Gray Eye

c.) Character Development: 3D Forms From the grid of solids, I picked the best 10 shapes and ran them through various Rhino commands. The following new grids compare the 2D forms to their Revolved, Lofted, and Extruded variations. Most of the extruded shapes were Twisted or Bent in addition. [ CONTOUR ]

d.) Spatial Vessels Next, I made combinations from some of the 3D shapes. I have a light-colored, a shaded, and a dark-colored combination; this will be useful for determining the theme for each later on. Southwest View

I also started treating the combinations more as vessels by creating plans and sections for each. This gives a better understanding of what it would be like to exist in the space.

e.) Deduction Axonometrics I wrapped up Project 1 by revealing my main idea for the bathhouse going forward. The axonometrics state that the brighter the color of the vessel, the hotter its internal temperature. This supports the names given to each vessel.

Project 02: Fluid Vessels f.) Thick Skins I designed two different panels that will allow light to travel through each space in a unique way. Tile design 1 is a square fragmented into shards. This is a callback to the “broken bottles” theme from the original painting. Tile design 2 is a snowflake graphic that was meant to paint a “snowy” scene in the vessel. Plan

Tile design 3 was created later on due to uncertainties with tile design 2. This will permanently replace the second design, starting in Project 3. Tile design 3 focuses more on creating a “snowstorm” effect. Plan

g.) Spatial Vessels v2 Before applying the panels, I first wanted to revise/expand the vessels to make them more comfortable and spacious for future occupants. Shown below are new plans and sections for each.

i.) Edge and Character To conclude Project 2, I created perspective renderings of within each panelized vessel, layered with texture and water. Silhouettes have been added for scale and to enhance the first-person point of view.

Project 03: Sunken Vessels j.) Section Perspectives (Visualization 2) At this point, paneling and vessels have been revised once more, so these new section perspectives show how light travels through each space, and how occupants are able to move throughout them. Their assigned water programs are included.

k.) Anchor Site / Filtration I began site development by excavating from a 64ft x 64ft x 64ft box using the non-panelized vessels. Due to vessel placement, elements such as light displacement and paneling may change dramatically. In this case, the hotter the vessel, the deeper it is underground. Secondary vessels (locker room, ckeck-in room, etc.) have been added to improve the narrative. N

l.) Narrative + Circulation N

The Rewarding Waters The occupant will begin his journey at the bottom of the building, arriving via ferry, and make his way all the way up to ground level. After going through Check-in and the locker rooms, the occupant climbs a flight of stairs onto the Steam Room (the hot vessel). He’ll climb another flight of stairs onto the Cozy Holder (the warm vessel), and then another onto the Frozen Observatory (the cold vessel). One more flight of stairs takes him to the exit, where he is free to hike down, call a cab, etc. The idea behind this specific maneuver is to make the occupant feel as though he’s being “rewarded” for climbing up the many levels of the bathhouse. Each level provides new awards (namely, new water prohrams for the occupant to enjoy). The grand “award” lies at the top, in the Frozen Observatory; it’s the building’s best view of the Hudson River below. Site (Approximate) Location: Hudson River; Palisades, NJ
