French industrial designer Jean-Marie M a s sa u d i s most well known for his elegant furnit u re fo r to p luxury brands the likes of Poliform and B & B I t a l i a . However, he also keeps a port folio of su st a i n a b l e personal projects, such as a flying hotel a n d the recent concept car with Toyota. U: C a n yo u t e l l u s a b o u t the design intention behind the recent furniture collection for Po l i f o r m d i s p l aye d a t M i l a n Fu r n i t u r e Fa i r 2 01 3 ? JMM: With Poliform, we do ‘permanent, basic, furniture des ign’, s o it’s refi ned bu t ver y bas ic… Th e mai n i ssu e i s volume, comfort, and finding a balance between something very convenient, an erg onomic standard of sorts, and not too arrogant. So m etim e s you need some punctuation, like in music, where you need crescendo but yo u als o need s ome harmony. So there are some pieces whose des ign I pay les s attenti on to but h ave a nice refi nement i n terms of proportion and finish, and others that are more ‘protag onistic’… that have a twist or a mood in their overall harmony. For example, last year, I des igned the Wallace armchair for Poliform. It was an attempt to make a melted shape in a new way, keeping a very simple way of producing softness, but

breaking the physical way of produ cti on… So you have a leather envelope, you i nject foam i nsi de, and then you pu t i t on a sculpture, which is not rational. This year I did something similar, in breaking the harmony, wi th a small armchai r, the Ipanema. In li ne wi th i ts Brazi lli an i nflu ence, i t was more cu ltu ral, very comfortable, and even less formal in the way you use it. It was abou t sayi ng, “ We can also g o i n thi s [other] di recti on”. Even i f you bu y the very basi c sofa, the Bri stol, i t already gives you the twi st you need.

It’s about sma r t n e ss a n d se n sit iv ity. Ho p e fully thi s mut a t io n ca n o p e ra te in t he ma ss ma r ket . I th i n k t h a t d e s i g n i s ce n t ra l to l i n k i n g the ideas of a p ro j e c t , a c ro s s a l l t h e d i s c i p l i n e s f ro m economics, to rese a rc h , a n d to te c h n o l og y. B u t yo u n e e d to come u p wi th some sce n a r io s fo r t his te c hn o log y a n d soci al i ssu es, su ch a s how to live b ette r tog et he r a n d how to work better.

How d o yo u a p p r o a c h d e s i g n o f d i f f e r e n t s c a l e s, f o r ex a m p l e , s h ow r o o m ve r s u s f u r n i t u r e?

The vi si on i s si mi lar. It’s abou t a way of doi ng new things. It’s to question the progress all the time, to improve the qu ali ty all the ti me, and the experi ence of maki ng something better with less.

If you don’t t hin k o f t ra n sp o r t a t io n a s a st a te me n t o f power and wealth, b ut just b e in g fre e in t he c ity, t he n w ha t you need i s the best o b je c t to b r in g yo u fro m o n e p o in t to another i n di fferen t sit ua t io n s.

I n some scales, for example, a football stadium, of cou rse you have to work at the scale of the ci ty to u nderstand and propose some relevant scenari os: hu man, soci al, economi c, ecologi cal… bu t at the scale of a pi ece of fu rni tu re, the ru les don’t chang e so fast. Fu rni tu re i s not so easy to question.

Usually, whe n yo u l e ave t h e ca r fo r a we e k i n a c i ty, i t’s ju st a ni ghtmare , b e ca use it ’s like p utt in g a jewe l in t he streets and you are wo r r ie d a b o ut le av in g it t he re . Yo u d o n ’t consi der i ts servi ce a nymo re , yo u co n sid e r it s ma in te n a n ce . I wanted somethin g a f fo rd a b l e b u t s u p e r re l eva n t i n te r m s of servi ces. ME.WE use s a n e le c t r ica l e n g in e in t he w he e ls so the whole car i s lig hte r.

The way to thi nk abou t both i s the same for me. I’m always qu esti oni ng what i s the overall experi ence, the benefits (in terms of quality, competence, and comfort), the ways to u se i t, and the servi ce. I also thi nk abou t how to be relevant and more competent in terms of production and su stai nabi li ty, becau se su stai nabi li ty i s not ju st a trend bu t a way to ensu re we live i n thi s world. D o you c onsider ec onomics in a ddition to a esthetics in your work ? Innovation sometimes takes place in a pyramid, starting at the top in the luxury field and then g etting democrati sed… bu t I thi nk the mai n challeng e for the creative world i s how to make thi ngs better for every body, commenci ng from the base of the pyrami d. The state of today ’s world requires a mutation from quantitative to qualitative growth, because growth is central to all kinds of ecosystems… you cannot avoid growth… Sometimes when I listen to economists say, “ We have to redu ce growth”, I thi nk we sti ll need growth— not i n terms of qu anti ty of matter, bu t i n terms of qu ali ty of servi ce. Then the growth wi ll have no li mi ts becau se there is no long er an ecological limit or a resource limit.

It’s not a jee p, it ’s n ot a b e a c h ca r, it ’s n ot a c ity car, it’s not a statio n wa g o n , i t ’s n ot a ca b r i o l et . I t ’s a l l tog ether… It’s a new ca r in it s ex p e r ie n ce .

When a product or an object or a service is relevant, c o m p e t e n t , a n d a b o u t q u a l i t y, it translates to timelessness and then it becomes universal. I s g ood desi g n u n ive r sa l o r i t i s a lways d et e r m i n e d by cultural c on text? I think it dep e n d s o n w h a t yo u m e a n b y d e s i g n … Because of globalisa t i o n , we s h a re a u n ive rsa l way o f l iv i n g even wi th the past, a n d g o o d d e sig n is go o d d e sig n . W he n a produ ct or an obje c t o r a se r v ice is re leva n t , co mp ete n t , and abou t qu ali ty, it t ra n sla te s to t ime le ssn e ss a n d t he n it becomes u niversal.

S aw expresses concern fo r a f addis h appro ach to m ater iality th at sees many des igners prem aturely jum ping into new, o ften lavi sh and o stentatio us, m ater ials and fo rcing over-valu ed evanescent products on the market. VW +BS’s practice works in the oth er directio n, towards clas s ic and traditional materi als. This attitude is embodied in their Pewter and Silt co llectio ns. S aw ’s own Fato lamp has been a constant in the changing landscape of his home’s interior. Design icons like th e Fato lam p h ave lo ng evity, w h ich reduces the wastefu l consumption that fuels the design industry. VW+BS’s pro ductio n quantities are lim ited in par t o u t of a desi re to pro duce fo r peo ple th at can af fo rd and appreci ate the work rath er th an inundate th e m ar ket w ith over produ cti on. S aw muses about the fundamental notion of a design icon. There are periods when a famous person us es s o m eth ing th at is o ut o f f as h io n and s u ddenly others think it will last forever. “But it doesn’t,” he reflects. “Noth ing, noth ing lasts fo rever.”
