JMM: With Poliform, we do ‘permanent, basic, furniture des ign’, s o it’s refi ned bu t ver y bas ic… Th e mai n i ssu e i s volume, comfort, and finding a balance between something very convenient, an erg onomic standard of sorts, and not too arrogant. So m etim e s you need some punctuation, like in music, where you need crescendo but yo u als o need s ome harmony. So there are some pieces whose des ign I pay les s attenti on to but h ave a nice refi nement i n terms of proportion and finish, and others that are more ‘protag onistic’… that have a twist or a mood in their overall harmony. For example, last year, I des igned the Wallace armchair for Poliform. It was an attempt to make a melted shape in a new way, keeping a very simple way of producing softness, but
breaking the physical way of produ cti on… So you have a leather envelope, you i nject foam i nsi de, and then you pu t i t on a sculpture, which is not rational. This year I did something similar, in breaking the harmony, wi th a small armchai r, the Ipanema. In li ne wi th i ts Brazi lli an i nflu ence, i t was more cu ltu ral, very comfortable, and even less formal in the way you use it. It was abou t sayi ng, “ We can also g o i n thi s [other] di recti on”. Even i f you bu y the very basi c sofa, the Bri stol, i t already gives you the twi st you need.

I n some scales, for example, a football stadium, of cou rse you have to work at the scale of the ci ty to u nderstand and propose some relevant scenari os: hu man, soci al, economi c, ecologi cal… bu t at the scale of a pi ece of fu rni tu re, the ru les don’t chang e so fast. Fu rni tu re i s not so easy to question.

I’m always qu esti oni ng what i s the overall experi ence, the benefits (in terms of quality, competence, and comfort), the ways to u se i t, and the servi ce. I also thi nk abou t how to be relevant and more competent in terms of production and su stai nabi li ty, becau se su stai nabi li ty i s not ju st a trend bu t a way to ensu re we live i n thi s world. D o you c onsider ec onomics in a ddition to a esthetics in your work ? Innovation sometimes takes place in a pyramid, starting at the top in the luxury field and then g etting democrati sed… bu t I thi nk the mai n challeng e for the creative world i s how to make thi ngs better for every body, commenci ng from the base of the pyrami d. The state of today ’s world requires a mutation from quantitative to qualitative growth, because growth is central to all kinds of ecosystems… you cannot avoid growth… Sometimes when I listen to economists say, “ We have to redu ce growth”, I thi nk we sti ll need growth— not i n terms of qu anti ty of matter, bu t i n terms of qu ali ty of servi ce. Then the growth wi ll have no li mi ts becau se there is no long er an ecological limit or a resource limit.
It’s not a jee p, it ’s n ot a b e a c h ca r, it ’s n ot a c ity car, it’s not a statio n wa g o n , i t ’s n ot a ca b r i o l et . I t ’s a l l tog ether… It’s a new ca r in it s ex p e r ie n ce .
When a product or an object or a service is relevant, c o m p e t e n t , a n d a b o u t q u a l i t y, it translates to timelessness and then it becomes universal. VW +BS’s practice works in the oth er directio n, towards clas s ic and traditional materi als. This attitude is embodied in their Pewter and Silt co llectio ns. S aw ’s own Fato lamp has been a constant in the changing landscape of his home’s interior. Design icons like th e Fato lam p h ave lo ng evity, w h ich reduces the wastefu l consumption that fuels the design industry. VW+BS’s pro ductio n quantities are lim ited in par t o u t of a desi re to pro duce fo r peo ple th at can af fo rd and appreci ate the work rath er th an inundate th e m ar ket w ith over produ cti on. S aw muses about the fundamental notion of a design icon. There are periods when a famous person us es s o m eth ing th at is o ut o f f as h io n and s u ddenly others think it will last forever. “But it doesn’t,” he reflects. “Noth ing, noth ing lasts fo rever.”
