Husband-wife team John Baker and Juli Daoust have perfected the art of balance. Their Studio Junctiondesigned gallery-and-lifestyle shop serves its dual purpose as gracefully as their selection of minimalist Japanese and Scandinavian furniture and homeware weighs form and function. When award-winning Swedish architecture firm Claesson Koivisto Rune was invited to design a product to be handcrafted in Toronto for Mjölk, they went with a riff on the name (it’s Swedish for milk). The Ceremony set’s Canadian maple and solid brass tray is reversible – serve cookies or cake wood side up or use the brass top as a trivet – while the compact porcelain milk pitcher’s concave wooden lid doubles as a bowl for sugar cubes.

DUNHAM’S NAMESAKE

Born in Durham, England, Thomas Dunn was given the title to the then township in 1796. The unprecedented grant of Dunham – now the heart of the province’s wine industry – speaks to the respect that Dunn commanded in Lower Canada. A man of “sound wisdom, rectitude and benevolence,” he meant business from the start and wore many hats: entrepreneur, seigneur, judge, office-holder, politician and eventually colonial administrator. In the warm, intimate studio space behind the jewellery shop storefront, owner and instructor Sarah Wan offers a popular, weekly Wedding Band Workshop. After an initial consultation to select the ring designs and materials, Wan and co-instructor Melissa Dalton guide a maximum of three couples per session through measuring, cutting, forming, soldering, sanding and polishing shaped bars of the chosen metal – silver or white, rose or yellow gold – into gleaming, one-of-a-kind wedding bands. No

experience is necessary, but commitment, aptly enough, is. The labour is a lengthy one as you sand and buff out imperfections to Wan’s exacting standards. Afterward, take your bands home as is or, if you wish, leave them with Wan for engraving, rhodium plating or stone-setting.  Pour convoler en justes noces avec originalité, rendez-vous au Devil’s Workshop, sur Queen Street West, en bordure du parc Trinity Bellwoods. TRATTORIA NERVOSA The kale salad is the best in the city. If I’m there for dinner, though, I always order the same thing: the rigatoni pomodoro. It’s just a red sauce, but it’s so good and authentic. You’d think somebody’s Italian grandmother is in the kitchen making it.  Sa salade de chou frisé est tout simplement la meilleure en ville. Jazouli doesn’t have off-the-street customers, so she orders just what she needs, shopping local vendors in the warmer months and sometimes t urning to her own small garden to complete bouquets.  N’ayant pas pignon sur rue, Nadine ne commande que l’essentiel. À la belle saison, elle privilégie les fournisseurs locaux et complète ses bouquets avec les fleurs de son petit jardin.

Organic and unstructured are her calling cards; she doesn’t work with altered flowers. Instead, she suggests an all-natural selection of flowers to fit her clients’ vision.  Naturel et déstructuré sont ses maîtres mots : elle refuse de travailler avec des fleurs teintes. Elle trouve des variétés issues de la nature, en harmonie avec la vision de ses clients.

Jazouli has an affinity for ranunculi. “They are as beautiful when tightly closed as when the petals open up. It’s also a flower that dries very well.”  Nadine a un faible pour les renoncules, « aussi jolies fermées qu’écloses. En plus, c’est une fleur qui sèche très bien ».
