Gogo and Phasor to Beam Up New Antennas Stick anything on the outside of an aircraft and it creates drag. Airflow around the fuselage is disturbed, reducing an airplane’s performance. The fairings that now cover satellite antennas are as streamlined as possible, but work continues to make antennas and enclosures smaller. To innovate in this arena, Gogo has partnered with Phasor, a Washington, DC-based company that’s focused on improving satcom antenna design. Founded to solve the challenge of creating very low profile broadband antennas for high-speed trains, Phasor will work with Gogo to bring this technology to the aviation connectivity market. Phasor’s flat-panel, electronically steerable, phased-array antenna modules are less than one-inch thick, and modules can be combined to create a larger antenna. With an eye to drag reduction, the modules can be shaped to conform to any curved surface – like aircraft fuselages. This modular and scalable antenna technology is particularly suitable for smaller regional aircraft, enabling in-flight connectivity for passengers on short-distance flights.

Nesma Airlines Selects AirFi’s Wireless Entertainment Nesma Airlines is the first Middle Eastern airline to select AirFi’s wireless in-flight entertainment solution, with plans to launch on the Cairo-based carrier’s A320 aircraft by November this year. Once available, passengers flying on Nesma will be able view content in English (and eventually Arabic) on their devices via a free onboard Wi-Fi network created by AirFi boxes positioned throughout the cabin. Content will be provided with AirFi’s network of more than 50 providers, including its partner OnBoard International. “We are delighted to welcome Nesma to the AirFi family and to open up another new region here in the Middle East with our partner OnBoard International,” says AirFi chief executive officer, Job Heimerikx.

Released last week, SITAONAIR’s white paper, “Open Platforms: The Next Inflight Connectivity Revolution,” reveals an industry shift in use cases for in-flight connectivity. Passenger connectivity is still the key motivator for adopting connectivity, with 46 percent of airlines surveyed indicating that they view passenger experience as the main benefit of the connected aircraft, but interest in other applications is growing. Nineteen percent view connectivity services to support pilots and cabin crew as a principal driver, and 15 percent prioritize connectivity to support aircraft maintenance and operations monitoring.

Did you choose the airline industry or did it choose you? The airline industry chose me. I did not plan to be in the airline business at all; it never crossed my mind. It actually chose me: My friend asked me to do it! So, I’ve been doing it for 12 years. In your opinion, what do you think is the most overlooked aspect of the passenger experience? There’s a lot you can do on an airplane, but there’s not enough in terms of movement. Passengers are stuck in their seats for so long. I’m not sure we can change that too much, but I think certain airlines are trying to provide personal space so passengers can walk around D OLWWOH ELW PRUH HVSHFLDOO\ RQ ORQJ Ĺ‹LJKWV You’re taking Nok Air to China. What’s the plan? Going to China is a strategic move: Thailand is one of the top destinations for Chinese WUDYHOHUV :HĂľUH DOVR GRLQJ LW WR GLʼnHUHQWLDWH RXU DLUOLQH EXW LWĂľV GLĹŒFXOW ,Q &KLQD HDFK FLW\ LV OLNH a whole country in terms of population. How do we become a brand that they will select? It’s going to be a challenge, but we want to be number one, in terms of carriers bringing passengers to Thailand. How important is personalization of the passenger experience to Nok Air? Personalizing for our large passenger base is actually not that easy. We use segmentation to bring us as close to personalization as possible. When we interact with individuals, we use the

data we collect, we try to personalize as much as we can for each customer. Obviously, we can’t do everything 100 percent. :KDW LV WKH IXWXUH RI LQ Ĺ?LJKW entertainment? ,Q WKH IXWXUH SDVVHQJHUV ZLOO EULQJ WKHLU RZQ VWXʼn on the plane, because all the planes will have Wi-Fi on board. Passengers will bring the content that they actually choose to interact with, rather than just interact with what’s been given. Why is it important for Nok Air to be a part of the Value Alliance? The key part of joining the Value Alliance is that we can spread ourselves across the region very quickly. Therefore, the Value Alliance becomes a big network. Rather than having to buy 200 or 300 aircraft, we have immediate access to partner aircraft. A lot of airline CEOs are not active on social media, but you are. Why is it important to maintain a presence online? The market is really shifting toward social media. In the future, people will spend less time on TV and more time on social media, especially in Asia. It’s happening now. It’s the best way to communicate to customers. Every job has a cool factor.
