Mythopoeia Signs Fleet-Wide Power Deal Mythopoeia has announced that it will be equipping VivaAerobus’ entire fleet with its USB PowerStream solution. The deal covers up to 80 aircraft, including the airline’s existing fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. PowerStream features USB Type A and Type C outlets that are attached to the seat track, so the seat itself is not affected. This means every VivaAerobus passenger will have access to at least one USB outlet. “Today the market is seeing a growing range of airlines deploying seatback power to support their passenger’s PEDs, and this is yet another step establishing Mythopoeia as a major player in that market,” said Terry Bonar, CEO of Mythopoeia.

Mythopoeia’s PowerStream solution features USB Type A and Type C outlets.

“From a maintenance and installation perspective, our solution is very competitive.”

The installations, which will take two nights per aircraft, are scheduled to begin on December 7, according to Bonar. The company plans to complete two aircraft installations per week. “We limit downtime of the aircraft,” Bonar said. “From a maintenance and installation perspective, our solution is very competitive.” Mythopoeia expects to have equipped VivaAerobus’ existing fleet by early 2020. Installations will continue as the airline takes delivery of new aircraft. By 2025, the fleet will consist of 15 A320ceo, 24 A320neo and 41 A321neo aircraft.

A Jetlag Remedy, Now in VR Lighting affects our circadian rhythms, but can it also work inside a virtual reality headset? Jetlite and Inflight VR, two startups that met at Airbus BizLab, are putting the idea to trial. Raphael Baumann, chief commercial officer of Inflight VR, remembers thinking at the time, “It would be cool to have this lighting technology integrated into our virtual world.” The companies are showcasing a prototype to demonstrate different lighting scenarios inside a VR headset. Passengers can select their travel conditions – daytime or nighttime flight and direction of travel – and the lighting 10

in the virtual cabin will adjust accordingly to minimize jet lag: reddish if they’re winding down for the evening or bluish if they’re trying to stay alert. “Light is the most effective simulator of your inner clock. Stress, food, work and sports do have an influence but light is the most powerful time shifter,” said Dr.

Achim Leder, who has studied the topic for five years. His findings have attracted the attention of Lufthansa and Recaro, among others. While the VR application is still in testing, Leder believes, in theory, the solution should work as it doesn’t make a big difference which lighting source is used for jetlag reduction.

ECA Group, PXCom and Global One Media Make It Official

Argus Cyber Security is bringing its extensive experience in the automotive sector to bear on security issues facing in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) systems. “Many of the technologies that you can find in a car are similar to ones you can find in aircraft cabins,” said Rubi Arbel, the company’s VP Aviation. To defend against in-flight hacking attempts, the Tel Avivbased company has launched Argus IFEC Protection, a software solution that can be installed in hardware – such as servers, routers and screens – from any manufacturer. Recently, an in-flight Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP)

vulnerability was identified by a manufacturer, publicly published, and immediately patched to prevent any further intrusions. Although this might be perceived to be an isolated case, Arbel believes that new vulnerabilities will be exposed and the industry needs to be prepared. If an IFEC hack succeeds and passengers’ private information is compromised, “damage could be done to the airline’s brand equity and business continuance,” said Arbel. Noting the increased industry focus on security, he added, “Everybody is treating it seriously and making good first steps. We can help make it better.”

After having launched a lightweight wireless access point (WAP) and an “all-in-one” product that integrates a WAP and media server at APEX Asia in March, ECA Group has now inked a deal with industry partners that turn the hardware into a turnkey solution. PXCom brings the software and Global One Media the content, and together the partners say they deliver an in-flight entertainment solution that minimizes costs and eases installation. “An easy solution is a turnkey solution,” said Mohamad ElAssad, CEO, Global One Media, at the contract signing on Tuesday. “Together, we provide a box that has all the content and the software already, making it easier for airline customers – from beginning to end.”

We Couldn’t Have Done It Without You! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the 40th anniversary issue of APEX Experience. There were many aspects of the association’s history that we didn’t get to touch on and some submissions that didn’t make it to print. Here is some bonus content that was not included in the magazine – which you can pick up at registration if you don’t have one already! into which such programming needed to be translated, as well as providing some rudimentary encryption to protect copyright. One must remember that IFE systems were lagging way behind their counterparts on the ground. Airlines had to make do with enormous Super 8 cassettes which were known for seizing up. They also couldn’t be rewound and cabin crew had to insert a spare cassette and start the film right from the beginning, which frustrated both passengers and crew.” – Ruth Rosenbrock , former WAEA president

(South African Airways)

ANNIVERSARY

What was the landscape of the in-flight entertainment industry like in the early days?

“We were still delivering physical elements to airlines by sneaker mail. Few airlines offered the choices they deliver today. The rapid digital delivery advances that affected all sectors of the entertainment and media hit the in-flight entertainment community fast and hard. Passengers expected to be offered on board the same options available to them in their living rooms at home. The IFE industry scrambled to make that happen.” – Lee Casey, very special advisor, West Entertainment

What was the impetus behind the formation of the association?

“There was a need to combine programming availability of movies, shorts and music from distributors, which were scattered all over the world, into one marketplace, widening the amount of vendors and facilitating greater choice of programming. The association also started the standardization of cost structures and the formats

What is APEX’s greateat achievement?

“The great value of the association is education. There’s a true emphasis on explaining how things work – not only technically, but also from a business standpoint. In the EXPO educational sessions, we hear about products and services, which business models work and how to cost justify certain products. Just being able to share that information and have an open forum where you can get a broader picture is valuable.” – Doug Backelin, former APEX president (American Airlines) and APEX Technology Committee member

What were your first impressions of APEX EXPO?

“When I first joined WAEA, I was working for Airbus so I had come across a number of people from the hardware manufacturers, but I basically didn’t know anybody on the content side of the business, which was a significant proportion of the membership. My first impressions were that it was a little bit of a closed shop and everyone seemed to know everybody else, but that quickly dissipated. I made friends and broadened my network within the association and felt early on that this was the right place to be.” — Jon Norris , vice-president, Marketing, FlightPath3D

EXPO DAILY experience

15

How has APEX grown?

“The association was blessed with so many talented folks who volunteered on the board and committees, both men and women, from airlines as well as vendors. Those who volunteered earned the respect of their peers. There was always competition for a seat on the board – unlike some organizations that have to twist arms to get people to volunteer. To me that’s a sign of a healthy organization.”

— Neil James, consultant and former APEX board member

— Janice Daniello, formerly of Post Modern Group

What makes working in this industry so great?

Looking back over the years, what do you appreciate most about APEX?

“I have spent almost 20 years in the IFE industry: nowhere near as long as most of the people I have had the privilege over the years of meeting and forming great friendships with. Most, I’m sure, would share my view that this industry is unique and feels more like a family than an industry sometimes. Rarely do people depart the industry or, if they do, they are pulled back in or they change their hats from airline side to vendor side. There are so many opportunities to branch out skillsets, to live and travel all over the world, and to share experiences over decades. Many of you have become lifelong friends to whom I am so grateful.” – Sally Lythgo, marketing manager, Burrana

16

In your opinion, what has ensured APEX’s success over the years?

“APEX has gone from being an annual show and marketplace to being a global association. There were a lot of us back in the day when I was on the board that were pushing for more regional participation and events. And APEX can now put its flag in the ground and say it’s an international organization instead of just a West Coast California thing – even though the EXPOs seem to have found a home there given that that’s where a lot of the suppliers are.”

EXPO DAILY experience

“In celebration of APEX’s 40th anniversary, I reflect upon the doors this organization opens to airlines and vendors alike looking to make a difference in the passenger experience. The conference is a forum that brings together those who make this effort their vocational objective. It has always been like this and these relationships go beyond the office to tried and true trustful friendships that last a lifetime. Happy 40th APEX! Thank you!” – Diane E Boush , formerly of Inflight Productions

Gore Toughens Up The cable that links an in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) system’s electronics to its antenna must always be fully operational. “If that cable goes down, there is no redundancy,” said Jim Foreman, Global Product Specialist for Gore. When IFEC antennas for air-to-ground systems are mounted on the bottom of an aircraft, the cable is exposed to hazardous contaminants, such as fuel, deicing fluid, and lavatory and galley liquids, that can collect inside the fuselage at its lowest point. At the top of the fuselage, where satcom antennas are mounted, condensation can form when a cold-soaked plane descends for landing after a long-distance flight. Gore’s 7 Series coaxial cable has been developed to resist all of these obstacles. “Within the cable we put a vapor and liquid barrier to prevent the ingress of any liquids or gases,” explained Foreman. In other news, Gore will focus on IFEC in its soon-to-be-released White Paper, titled Take Off and Stay Connected – Seamless Internet Service Through Superior Cable Technology. EXPO DAILY experience
