Understand How It’s All Connected.

The world is big and complex. That’s why Longwood created Civitae, our distinct approach to education that connects people, ideas and actions. In addition, you’ll learn from experienced faculty in small classes— not cavernous lecture halls—as you acquire today’s most sought-after skills. You also won’t have to wait long to do the really cool stuff. That includes research, internships and opportunities to travel both near and far, exploring society’s most pressing matters. It all starts your first year. Just as important, you’ll learn to value different perspectives, build meaningful relationships and discover what it means to be a good citizen.

Looking for something different? You’ve come to the right place.

No matter your academic program, you’ll have the opportunity to take innovative courses that blend disciplines. Travel the country and the world, connecting with different topics and communities. And build skills that will set you apart. That’s the Longwood difference. Along the way, you’ll also become a strong writer, public speaker and critical thinker, making it hard for any employer or graduate school to overlook you. Civitae Core Curriculum Built on the timeless principles of citizen leaders, this unique set of classes is the foundation of your education at Longwood. It will teach you to work creatively and collaboratively as you examine the world in deeper, more complex ways. Cormier Honors College for Citizen Scholars This distinctive living-learning community offers ambitious students challenging courses, designated housing, additional scholarship opportunities and more. Call Me MISTER With a chapter at Longwood since 2007, the goal of this national program is to increase the number of males from diverse backgrounds pursuing a career in teaching.

While at Longwood, Bethany Adams ’20, a chemistry major, studied Chesapeake Bay ecosystems as part of a Brock Experience. That, along with her honors research thesis, caught the attention of Clemson University, where she’s now pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry.

Caryn Ross ’15 studied biology at Longwood, where she conducted research on the effects of urbanization on birds. She was also the founding president of the university’s National Wildlife Society chapter. Today, she’s a biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey.

WELCOME TO Longwood As Virginia’s third-oldest public institution of higher education, Longwood is home to beautiful Jeffersonian architecture, lush quads and inviting fountains. Adding to the Lancer experience are our vibrant campus community and time-honored traditions found only here. For most future students, one visit is all it takes to know this is the place for them. CHERISHED TRADITIONS Oktoberfest Students blow off steam halfway through the fall semester with the help of live music, storytelling and Color Wars, when Lancers get to throw paint at each other. The G.A.M.E. Short for the Greatest Athletics March Ever, this is when the Longwood community walks through Farmville, proudly showing off their Lancer spirit. Spring Weekend From Taylor Swift to Dierks Bentley, big names perform at Spring Weekend. Plus, you get to play volleyball in the mud. We call it Oozeball. The Big Event Lancers love giving back, especially on this day, when they volunteer to clean waterways, stock food pantries, paint buildings and more throughout Farmville. Secret Societies Longwood’s CHI and Princeps secret societies promote campus spirit, citizen leadership and service to others—all under the cloak of secrecy. Shhh… look for their telltale markings throughout campus.

CONNECT TO A COLLEGE TOWN that has it all From locally owned restaurants to festivals and outdoor fun, Farmville has everything you want in a great two-college town. You’re also just a short drive away from world-class career and cultural opportunities found in several other larger cities. The heart of Virginia has it all. Start exploring!

TWO-COLLEGE TOWN Farmville is the first town in the nation with two colleges—with Hampden-Sydney College (founded in 1775) also in the area—making for a youthful and vibrant place to live and learn.

THINGS TO DO A five-minute walk from campus, historic downtown Farmville is lined with quaint stores, coffee shops and all sorts of dining options. If they’re not on campus, this is where you’ll find most Lancers hanging out. Also downtown is the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts and new High Street Theatre. With exhibits, art house movies and live performances, there’s no shortage of culture in Farmville. If heights are your thing, then check out the nearby High Bridge Trail State Park, which lets you walk 125 feet above the Appomattox River. You can buzz through the trees at Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat. Just six miles from Farmville, it’s home to 20 zip-lines and 60 treetop obstacles. If you’re a history buff, it’s hard to beat the area’s historical homes and museums. Plus, the Civil War came to an end at nearby Appomattox Court House, now a national park.
