THE MARITIME ADVANTAGE

A GUIDE FOR PARENTS

SUPPORTING FAMILIES

At SUNY Maritime College, you’ll find a supportive community for both students and parents. Our active Parents Association offers a place to turn if you or your student need help in any way. With monthly meetings, annual events, a private Facebook group, timely emails and fundraising opportunities, you’ll feel deeply connected to your student’s college experience.

The support doesn’t end when your student graduates. The Maritime College Alumni Association, founded in 1903, provides alumni with a vehicle for expanding their personal and professional networks, as well as financial and career support for current students.

“I couldn’t be any more impressed with the opportunities provided to my two Maritime College students. My daughter got a job offer as a sophomore and is now going to travel to Asia for a study abroad program. My son is already planning his cadet shipping experience. They wouldn’t have had these possibilities anywhere else.”

“ Watching our son incrementally develop leadership skills and boldly take on new and challenging tasks both inside and outside the classroom has been wonderful. We feel entirely comfortable with him being part of this community, which incentivizes such strong personal values, camaraderie, and growth.”

A FUTURE-FOCUSED EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW’S LEADERS

SUNY Maritime prepares students to become leaders on land, sea, and even in space through immersive learning and research opportunities. You’ll watch your student transform under the guidance of our highly experienced faculty, who are as invested in their success as you are. Our academic majors and minors combine critical theories with hands-on practice to prepare students to face whatever comes their way with confidence and experience.

U.S. COAST GUARD LICENSE

All of our majors include coursework and training that will prepare students to earn a U.S. Coast Guard Deck or Engine License. Upon earning their license, your student will be qualified for positions on any commercial vessel.

SUMMER SEA TERM

The Sea Term is an integral part of the SUNY Maritime College experience for students pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard License. You’ll gain hands-on professional training aboard our first-of-its-kind floating lab, the Empire State VII. While most students do all their training on the Empire State VII, students also have the option to complete the second Sea Term aboard a commercial vessel in our Cadet Shipping program.
