YOUR EXPERIENCE, YOUR CHOICE
30% Non-Regimental Students
The Regiment of Cadets is one of SUNY Maritime’s oldest traditions, but participation is not required for all students. The non-regimental path, often referred to as traditional or civilian, is a typical student experience. No matter which path you choose, you’ll have access to the same classes, clubs, and athletics that make for a well-rounded and memorable college experience.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
SAMPLE DAILY SCHEDULES
While the lifestyles and professional opportunities are different between the two experiences, our regimental and civilian students take classes together, participate in the same clubs and on-campus activities, and play on athletic teams together. We are truly one united student body.

SUMMER AT SEA
The Sea Term is an integral part of the SUNY Maritime College experience for students pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard License. You’ll gain hands-on professional training aboard our first-of-its-kind floating lab, the Empire State VII. While most students do all their training on the Empire State VII, students also have the option to complete the second Sea Term aboard a commercial vessel in our Cadet Shipping program.
JOIN OUR LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
The Regiment of Cadets offers a disciplined lifestyle, preparing students to earn a U.S. Coast Guard License and work on commercial vessels. The regiment is not affiliated with the U.S. military, and there is no service requirement.
The Regiment instills discipline, camaraderie, and confidence in each and every cadet, from Indoctrination through graduation. You’ll learn not just how to survive and thrive onboard a ship, you’ll also gain an uncommonly strong physical, mental, and ethical foundation for a successful future in any field.
REQUIRED MEMBERSHIP
The Regiment of Cadets is required to earn a U.S. Coast Guard Deck or Engine License, as well as for the following degree programs:
• A.A.S., Maritime Technology
• B.E., Marine Engineering
• B.S., Marine Operations
• B.S., Marine Transportation
You’ll also participate in three Summer Sea Terms aboard our state-of-the-art training ship.
OPTIONAL MEMBERSHIP
You can still participate in the Regiment, even if you do not intend to work onboard a commercial vessel. You’ll abide by all of the Regiment’s rules and regulations, including wearing a uniform and participating in Regimental activities. Instead of Summer Sea term, you will participate in required internship(s).
