RECOMMENDED READING Problem Solving Through Recreational Mathematics Brief Description:
Kam Chun Kei Anson (2015/16 F.3B 07)
Inspired by the ideology that Mathematics can be mesmerizing, Bonnie and Orin have recorded numerous famous Mathematical questions and printed them in this book. They believe that through answering questions, readers’ abilities to synthesize data can be improved, and that the process of problem – solving may inspire readers with new insights about Mathematics. At the same time, they strongly believe that process is more important than getting the answers, hence throughout the book they keep on reminding readers “try to think first. Don’t look at the answer,” so as to encourage readers to train their independent thinking. Comments: Mathematics has long been regarded as a boring and mystifying subject among students for its complicated formulae and incomprehensible algebra. Very often, people have this misunderstanding that Mathematics is not directly related to our daily lives. But that is not the case. Instead, after reading this book, I realize Mathematics exists in different parts of our lives. Taxation, combinations, probability… these are just some of the areas in which Mathematics influences our lives. Mathematics is connected with every one of us. In terms of the text, despite the fact that the appearance of the book is not very appealing, its content is very rich with numerous innovative questions. Moreover, detailed explanations of questions are provided on the last page of every chapter to help readers understand the theories and methods behind from. Furthermore, although the paragraphs of text can sometimes be very annoying, the wise use of illustrations and pictures manages to neutralize the negative impact of long paragraphs, and give life to the text – filled book. In terms of belief, I am very impressed by their passion and affection towards Mathematics. It is always a tough job to inspire people , yet Bonnie and Orin have decided to write this book to unveil the beauty of Mathematics to everyone around the world. It is not just the creative questions inside that show their sincere belief; the thoughtful organization of the questions from logical deduction to complicated enlightening book. It must have been time – consuming, but I was touched by their sincere passion for Mathematics. Problem Solving Through Recreational Mathematics is definitely worth reading for its innovative questions and inspiring message, and I would definitely recommend this book to my classmates and my peers. RECOMMENDED READING Martin Gardner Entertaining Mathematical Puzzles
Li Juncheng Sherman (2015/16 1G)
Brief Description: This book includes many different interesting questions. Some are funny, some are interesting, some are difficult. One of the most memorable questions is about a boy called Al who wants to have a rise in his daily pocket money. His dad refuses and so he tells his dad to give him one penny on the first day, then two pennies on the second day. Each day, the dad needs to give Al twice as many as pennies as the day before. His dad, thinking it is very good, agrees immediately. But interestingly the dad needs to give him $10,737,418.23 pennies in one month, so I found out the dad had been tricked!
This table shows the amount of pennies the dad needs to pay in a week. Comments: I think this book is very interesting and educational because there are a lot of different questions about math. It also taught me how to think differently and from different perspectives. For example, if three cats catch three rats in three minutes, how many cats will catch 100 rats in 100 minutes? People always think if it took three minutes for three cats to catch three rats, then one cat catches one rat in a minute. But this answer is wrong! I was very surprised at first too. But I found out that there is not enough information to solve this puzzle. So this experience taught me to think in different ways. Secondly, it taught me not to be careless. Once, I saw a question: Mrs Puffem who likes to smoke decides to quit smoking after she smokes the rest of her 27 cigarettes. But she has a habit to only smoke 2/3 of a cigarette. Later she finds out that she can stick the remaining 1/3 of three used cigarettes and form a new one. So how many cigarettes can she smoke before she quit smoking? I first saw the question and thought it was very easy: She can first smoke 27 cigarettes and then stick the three 1/3

cigarettes together, so dividing 27 by 3 that is equal to 9. So the answer is 36. But the actual answer is 40 because I forgot that the rest of the nine cigarettes can form three new ones the last 3 cigarettes can form 1 new, so it should be 27+9+3+1=40 cigarettes. In conclusion, I’ve learnt a lot from this book and think it’s very educational and interesting. I would also like to recommend this book to other students too.
