& of the World By: Denise Burns

I sat down at my computer with an overwhelming feeling to just write. There are many things on my mind, things like love, anger, fear and thoughts of why all this is running through my head. I have an old friend who is fighting a battle that man says he cannot win. I have three sons Satan is continually trying to take down and an ex-husband whom I adore but constantly fight’s to keep his head above water. These may all be the reasons I feel such a range of emotions. 8

Let me tell you this; in all I feel I know without a doubt God has my life in His hands, just the same as He has my sons, my ex-husband and my old friend. Life isn’t about how we see it. Life isn’t about how we feel. See, vision changes and feelings flee. I have to know what exactly gets me through the day, gives peace to my ciaos and soothes my rugged emotions. I in no way want to be that “preachy” person. I want to be the one others look at and say “wow, how does she continue to have faith with all the challenges she faces” I want to be the light and the salt of the earth because that is exactly what we are called to be. We can sit back and feel sorry for ourselves; we can desire to no longer play this game of life. We have choices; we have the ability to call for peace and to be soothed. I realize this is not always our first choice because it isn’t always mine, sometimes I want

to be stuck in my feelings, her own faith. What does being an entrepreneur mean to you?

reason is because she exemplifies what hard work and determination can get you.

Entrepreneur means someone that operates a business by taking risks, including financial, spiritual and even mental to become successful.

What is your greatest professional accomplishment to date?

What or who has been your greatest influence in business and why? My greatest influence is Suzanne Shank. She is the first African American women to operate a trillon dollar company on wall street. The

Greatest Accomplishment is to win the 2015 She- Ro Award. This award is only given to individuals who have made an impact in the female community. To be recognized for all of my efforts is huge! 13

What has been the most effective marketing tactic for your business?

The most effective marketing tactic for me is engaging with the followers. Reaching out personally to my followers and seeing how I can connect with them and see what they have going on. Taking interest in what they are doing and who they are. Not only will my followers feel appreciated and not just a number but it allows me to expose my brand and get support where it’s needed. I take networking very seriously. Great networking is one of the best marketing strategies you can use.

Do you have any new promotions that you would like to tell SW readers about?

What is the best business advice you received that you would like to pass on to SW readers? The best business advice that I have received is do what you love to do. If you’re not passionate about it, don’t waste your time. In order to be successful, you have to love what you do. Period!

WE (PWIB) are supporting the Next Level Up Day Party for Women In Business. They can go here for more info: nluatlanta.eventbrite.com

What do you do for fun or relaxation? Spend time with my family, exercise and attempt to take great naps. I also love to travel.

“Don’t Stop working towards your dreams. Always believe in yourself and your vision. It’s not going to be easy but as long as you do what you love and follow those dreams of yours. You will be successful!” 14

On Purpose Women’s Network (OPWN) is a mentoring and networking organization for Women 18 + who feel the leading and calling for Christian ministry. Pastor, Teacher, Evangelist are common ministry areas but there is ministry in writing, performing arts and the marketplace such as corporate or entrepreneurial endeavors. We realize for many of us, our business is our ministry!!! At OPWN, we define ministry as any act of service that is motivated by the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ multiplied on the earth and the goodness of God on display through our ministry. OPWN was founded out of a sincere desire to see women move forward in fulfilling their God-given destiny. We come from diverse cultures, denominations and experiences but we commonly share a desire to please Jesus!

Through membership, you can get involved in 3 ways: 1. Become an On Purpose Mentor to a less experienced female in ministry 2. Become an On Purpose Mentee and work with your Mentor to achieve your ministry goals 3. Become an On Purpose Group Leader in your community and help women discover and fulfill their God-given purpose

“For the Ministry You’ve Envisioned”

In Search of HER By Orlandina Balan

my divorce; A new relationship cannot be built upon the ashes of an old one. I thought this statement only applied to romantic relationships. I found, however, that those wise words applied to just about any relationship. Even the relationship we have with ourselves. A new relationship cannot be built upon the ashes of an old one.

My friend Marlene invited me to go hiking with her one cool and sunny Sunday morning. We talked about just about everything and had a great time. During one of our conversations Marlene shared that she felt like she had lost herself. She said "I'm not quite sure when it happened but I lost HER and I want to go back and find HER." I listened as she spoke. The last few words really resonated within me. "...I want to go back and find HER." I suddenly remembered some sound advice that good friend had shared with me after

Marlene had undergone many personal upheavals in recent years. The sudden death of her brother was especially hard for her to bear. He was more than a sibling. He had been her mentor, her motivator. They were inseparable. She came to the realization that in dealing with loss of her brother she had lost the adventurous, fearless, risk taker she once was. How had she gotten lost along the way? What did she stand to gain in getting HER back? We began to delve a deeper. Marlene felt that her former self was better equipped to handle the new journey she was on. I could completely relate to what she said. There had been times when I felt as if the 17

younger version of myself was more regimented and more disciplined. She was more adept at balancing my professional and personal life. The caveat is that my former self was inexperienced in the ways of the world, she was naive and uncertain of herself.

Truthfully I don't think we ever lose "HER". Our former selves simply undergo a transformation. Albert Einstein stated ‘…energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be transferred from one form to another’. Our experiences help us to become better versions of our former selves. Today, Marlene and the turbulence I came to the has passed and "I'm not quite realization that our Marlene is in a loving sure when it former selves didn’t relationship with a happened but I take into account wonderful man. They lost HER…." the lessons we had are expecting their learned, the first child in the experiences we've spring. She's made had and the wisdom many positive changes we've acquired in her life and is along the way. I shared my coming into her own. thoughts with my friend, "Although your former As we transition through life self may have been fierce and our main essence will remain the adventurous, she was more naive. same but with each passing The present you is wiser and season we will work out the kinks steadfast in her desires. ever improving the current The present you is the result of version of ourselves.
