Be A Better Mentor Denise Burns
Throughout my lifetime I have known many mentors. People who took time to invest in me even though I never felt worthy of their efforts. I took every bit of knowledge I could gain from them. My mentors never seemed to be who you may consider a typical mentor. I had family, children, Pastors, professors, and supervisors who gave me as much as they possible could. I find the most interesting mentors to be the people who have nothing material to give. The people who have no idea what they give because they give it so freely. They have had a life full of trials, tribulations, heartache and still have a strong desire to continue to fight their way through the next storm. The people I consider mentors have given me more of their heart, soul, time, and prayers all without expecting a single thing in return. The most important mentor in my life right now has no idea I consider him a mentor. He is fierce, strong, intelligent, loving, and kind. His wisdom is well beyond his years. He is the wolf, lamb, and child. Like
the wolf, he is protective and will fight to the death if need be. The evidence of his battles lay in the scars not only on his body, but on his soul. He is the kind of person who takes a loss and figures out how to make that loss a win. He has fought for his life on every level. God continues to bless him over and over. He has been blessed with the ability to be as gentle as the lamb and to love like the innocent child who has never experienced life’s hardships. When we find people in our lives, we often forget they are there for a purpose. We forget we all have seasons we pass through. We are all the wolf, lamb, and child. A true mentor is not someone who is trying to mentor you. They don’t look at you and think to themselves “now that’s someone I can mentor”. They instead are focused on being a bettering themselves and others. They are the people some dismiss because of their past.

"Empowerment" as a woman, is waking up everyday and facing the daily challenges with integrity. To know that, you gave it your best and if not make the next day better. Then to love yourself by recognizing your "self worth" and spoiling yourself. 10

Tell us about yourself
How was OPWN started?
The most important thing to know about me is that I am a Christian. I talk a lot about Purpose, but I don’t think anyone can fully understand their purpose without a true, intimate relationship with God, through His Son Jesus Christ. I want people to see the goodness of God on display in and through my life so they will desire a relationship with Him. That is living On Purpose. My greatest goal in life is to make Jesus famous!
Second, only to my relationship with Jesus, is my relationship with my husband of 19 years (Martin). We have a 12 year old daughter (Charis). I enjoy shopping for household knick-knacks and hanging out with my family and friends. I love to read, so a perfect afternoon for me would be sitting in my favorite chair with a good book and a warm blanket. I am in the process of finishing my first book, ‘Is My BUT too big? The excuses we have for not living on purpose’. It is kind of a memoir of all the stories I told myself for not doing what I really wanted to do. When people read it, I want them to put aside every excuse and begin to live their life… On Purpose. My favorite word is Purpose! 13
In 2015, we launched OPWN as a way to elevate women who felt a calling for ministry. My goal was simply to create a space for women to be mentored. Since that time, we have expanded our vision to include those with a desire not only for ministry, but leadership in business and entrepreneurial endeavors. We implemented this change because for a believer, any vocation is Ministry. To us, ministry is defined as any act of service that is motivated by the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ multiplied on the earth and the goodness of God on display. OPWN was founded out of a sincere desire to see women move forward in fulfilling their God given destiny. Our vision at OPWN is to be the most recognizable Christian Mentoring, Training and, Coaching organization; revolutionizing the way women are advanced. We offer unique programs for both Mentors and Mentees to develop, grow, and gain exposure as they help others develop, grow, and gain exposure.
What was your motivation to create OPWN?
Who do you service & what services do you provide?
In my life I have been blessed to be surround by people, both men and women, who believed in me and invested in me. Without a doubt, the things I have accomplished are a direct result of people who have mentored me.
OPWN is above all a framework for Mentoring. There are 2 types of women attracted to us:
The first is someone who knows their purpose, but for whatever reason, has never fully been able to see it come to fruition. Our hope is that our system, trained mentors, and resources will help make it a reality.
Almost 3 years ago, I notice there was a gap for women to have significant platforms. I couldn’t see a clear path for advancement, The other woman is someone who especially for Christian women. is struggling with the “WHY” or During this same time, I had a “WHAT” of their life. “Why was I dream. In my dream, the Lord created?” “What is my purpose?”. showed me a way to offer a “place” At OPWN, we don’t call anyof training and education so that body to anything. Our STRENGTH women are able to get from where is pulling out what has already been they are to where they wanted to placed inside by God. Through our be. System, the On Purpose Assessment OPWN was birthed to help and the wisdom and guidance of our women walk in their God-given trained mentors, we help them gain destiny. If you can imagine, clarity. We utilize various methods OPWN is the friend that will walk to determine the answers to the with you and hold your hand until questions. Final Thoughts… Our ministry is called On Purpose Women’s Network for 2 reasons. First, we realize the importance of being intentional in pursuing our God-given purpose. Intentional means On Purpose. Secondly, we understand everything about who we are such as: the color of our skin, the talents we possess, and the desires of our heart have all been given to us by God. He did it On Purpose. When you accept this, you live as one who has full confidence in the fact you have everything you need to Be and Do. If you have a dream in your heart that has not yet been realized, join us at
On Purpose Women’s Network!!!
