Our story

Working together

he Coloplast story T begins back in 1954 Elise Sørensen is a nurse, her sister Thora has just had an ostomy operation and is afraid to go out in public, fearing that her stoma might leak. Listening to her sister’s problems, Elise can seize the idea of the world’s first adhesive ostomy bag. Based on Elise’s idea, Aage Louis-Hansens create the ostomy bag. A bag that does not leak, giving Thora – and thousands of people like her – the chance to return to their normal life. Today, our business includes ostomy care, urology and continence care and wound and skin care. But our way of doing business still follows Elise and Aage’s example:

we listen, we learn and we respond

The changing NHS The demand for healthcare provision continues to grow therefore the NHS needs to make significant savings through greater efficiency whilst improving quality and patient outcomes. The proportion of the population aged 65 and over is projected to increase by 42% from 2010 to 20301. The increases in life expectancy, projected population growth and the prevalence of chronic diseases places an increased demand on health care resources. As a result NHS organisations must work to government initiatives such as QIPP that are designed to reduce costs while ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient focussed care.
