Taking on holistic wellbeing & achieving a cleansed energy field

"

Tamara (T): We find aromatherapy fascinating. The science behind it and how it works, such as how different scents can influence our moods and emotions, makes it integral to our daily lives. Louise (L): We both discovered holistic wellbeing around the same time. We would share tips and ideas and this developed into making products with essential oils. As we became more aware of the toxins in products used at home and the negative effects, it was really important for us to use natural alternatives that don’t just smell good but also have many health benefits too.

use of chemicals and harmful substances. We also ensure that all our packaging is reusable and recyclable. L: Wellbeing is all about feeling healthy and happy. We believe that in order to feel great, you must take a conscious and mindful approach to the way you live. L: In order to achieve a cleansed aura it’s important to remember that everything within and around us is made up of energy (positive/high and negative/low). Our auras are energy fields with different layers that transmit, attract and repel different vibrational frequencies. Once cleansed, you feel more grounded, refreshed and relaxed.

DYSON PREDICTS HAIR HEALTH TO BE A TREND

News

LONDON SALON KEASH JOINS FORCES WITH APPLE

According to Dyson's global styling ambassador Jen Atkin, lockdown has provided respite for the nation's hair. Staying at home has meant less need for heat styling, which is a habit that's expected to continue as normality resumes. She says: "We're anticipating a trend for people wanting to achieve their desired style with less heat. That’s where the Intelligent Heat Control technology within Dyson styling tools will help."

London salon Keash has secured the collab of the century, partnering with Apple for the launch of its new Powerbeats Pro earphones colours. The vibrant braids collection reflects the tech accessory line's latest hues. Keash’s CEO Taiba Akhuetie says: "When I saw the colours of the headphones I instantly wanted to do something bold and bright. So we've created hairstyles that match the energy of Powerbeats Pro instead of shying away from it.”

As the UK slowly emerges from lockdown, many of us are missing our trusty hairstylists who we’d ordinarily be reaching out to now for our holiday protective styles. But worry not: Spring Twists are one of our favourite new summerready looks - and they can be achieved at home! Beautiful, stylish and practical, these new twisted extensions look authentically natural and provide endless styling options. Here's why we can’t get enough of this red-hot summer hair trend...

enjoy o t e l b a e b 'll " You of s k ee w t h g i e six to -day o t y a d m o r f respite hairstyling" 1. They evoke the spirit of summer holidays Protective styles remind us of summer - and Spring Twists are no exception. Curly and coily in appearance, these extensions offer a laid-back bohemian vibe and are therefore the perfect option for when you're on your summer travels. While the jury is still out on whether we'll get the opportunity to jet away this year, we suggest you still continue the tradition of summer protective styling. Whatever happens, your natural hair will remain undisturbed by the sun and any damage inflicted by daily styling. 2. Twists are low maintenance Did we mention that Spring Twists are super effortless? Yes, admittedly the install might take three to four hours, but the upside of spending those hours sitting in one spot means that you’ll be able to enjoy six to eight weeks of respite from day-to-day hairstyling. And that’s not to say that protective styles like twists require no maintenance, it’s just that the upkeep generally pales in comparison. While we’re talking daily hair routines, do remember to keep your scalp nourished by using a light oil. 3. They aid hair growth and length retention The daily rigours of hairstyling as well as environmental factors can weaken your hair strands, resulting in breakage and damage. Protective styling has long been heralded as a styling method that can aid hair growth and Spring Twists are no different. Whether you opt for a crochet instalment or braiding, having your hair safely tucked away will give it a break from day-to-day styling, which will help strengthen your strands -

resulting in healthy growth and length retention. 4. They are stunningly versatile Spring Twists are one of the most versatile protective hairstyles around. They come in an assortment of lengths and shades (we’re particular fans of ombré twists) while allowing you to create popular everyday styles like ponytails, vintage rolls and half up/half down dos - see our stunning cover girl for inspo. 5. Twists are easy to DIY If you have felt the urge to try a DIY protective style while in lockdown, Spring Twists are probably your best bet. The extensions are pretwisted and come in springy curl-like formation (hence the name), which mimics the coily, elastic nature of natural hair. You simply blend your natural hair with the extensions, braid together for around one inch and then twist together to the end. Check out YouTube for some fun, easy tutorials. 6. Spring Twists offer style longevity by lasting for more than three weeks Due to the natural looking texture and the slightly undone appearance of Spring Twists, they actually look more authentic and ‘lived in’ the longer they are worn. Unlike some protective styles, the pristine and perfect aesthetic is not a requirement here so you can leave them in for a longer period. However, be extra careful not to neglect your scalp or cleansing regime as you will risk getting grime and heavy product build-up. Doing this will only set you back from achieving your dream hair length goals. SPELL

Flower Power From botanicals borrowed from fragrances to the world’s rarest stems, skincare has a new-found fascination with florals. Here’s everything you need to know about this budding beauty trend

Schwarzkopf

Florals for spring might not be exactly ground-breaking, but when it comes to skincare the appetite for botanicals is on the up. According to recent research, global sales of floral extracts to beauty companies has increased by 4.5 per cent year on year. Market research company the NPD Group also reports that sales of lavender-based cosmetics were up by a colossal 552 per cent in 2019. Meanwhile, online retailer Cult Beauty saw searches for jasmine increase by 174 per cent. And it's for good reason: from new extraction techniques to rare flowers picked solely for their impressive molecular make-up, the latest crop of floral formulations have all the hallmarks of resultsdriven skincare. Here are our top picks to add to your beauty arsenal...

REMARKABLE ROSE

Does your skin have a tendency to flare up? If so, reach for rose-infused products. AMLY’s new Nocturnal Nectar Facial Essence, £60, features rock rose, which is brimming with antiseptic and antimicrobial properties that improve acne and help bring unruly skin back into balance. Often found in masks where it can be super concentrated and not diluted with other ingredients, Peter Thomas Roth’s Rose Stem Cell Bio-Repair Gel Mask, £45, contains five rose stem cells and four rose extracts in a cooling gel.

LOVELY LAVENDER

JOYFUL JASMINE

Lavender doesn’t just calm your nerves, it works on distressed skin to combat inflammation. Studies show it can also help induce synthesis of both type I and type III collagen, which is a key component to maintaining skin health. Great for the body too, Faith in Nature's Lavender and Geranium Body Wash, £5.79, is a good starting point while Disciple London's Essential Oils Lavender, £10, can be added to daily moisturisers and night-time serums to see how your skin responds.

Known for balancing the skin, jasmine can be found in Susanne Kaufmann’s new Eye Rescue Stick, £80, to wipe out dark circles. The ingredient also works well paired with more traditional actives, such as in Pixi's Retinol Jasmine Cleanser, £18, where it is combined with retinol to further enhance its brightening benefits.

HIBISCUS HYPE

CALMING CAMELLIA FLOWER

Nothing beats hibiscus when it comes to inducing a radiant glow. Instantly brightening the skin, it has its own signature acids that gently exfoliate and help to shrink appearance of pores. What's more, it packs a serious punch of hydration - meaning it won’t leave skin feeling tight and flaky. Try Elemis’ Peptide Overnight Radiance Peel, £40, and Gallinee’s Face Vinegar, £23, to infuse skin with its powerful antioxidant benefits.

FEMMUE has based its entire portfolio on camellia, the oriental relative of rose. The brand has spent six years researching how this floral extract can counteract the effects of environmental pollution: “We discovered it’s effective in suppressing free oxygen radicals and is a powerful anti-stress ingredient, helping to protect skin from aggressors,” says founder, Kelly S. Chung. Try its Dream Glow Mask Plump, £48. SPELL

t ee M Remi

You’ve worked at a number of high profile brands – how did you get your start? I first started working as a PR assistant at natural skincare brand Fresh straight out of university. I then moved to Dubai and worked for Moët Hennessy in more of a marketingbased role. This was followed by a transition to PR at Chanel and then Dior. Because I'd previously been in marketing I worried that my new employers might think I wasn’t quite right for the job, but I showed that the skills were transferable. I moved back into PR because I like making connections with people. What’s your number one tip for anyone who wants a job in beauty PR? I think it’s important to be persistent and to make sure that your knowledge and enthusiasm come across in your interview and on the job. Is it important to be a fan of a brand in order to make yourself more employable? From my perspective, I would only work for brands that I am genuinely interested in, which is why I work in beauty. If you’re not interested in something, it can be difficult to hide that in an interview. I remember being grilled about my skincare routine in one interview; the interviewer made it sound like it was an innocent question, but it was really a test! What is a common misconception about people who work in PR? The main misconception about people in PR is that we’re bitchy! Some people think that we’ll be really nice to people’s faces and say everything that they want to hear, then we’ll be

Where do you find your inspiration for PR campaigns? Everywhere! I do like to think that I’m naturally creative, although I’m not an artist or a musician. There’s a lot of opportunity to be creative at Huda Beauty. They really welcome those with new ideas. The sky is the limit. Tell us something we don’t know about Huda Beauty! Something that very few people know is that the Huda sisters personally interview everyone who works for the company, regardless of whether they’re a cleaner or a manager. They’re really busy, but they put in the time to do this because they want to make sure that the vibe is right with that person. We also have a self-care day once a month, where you can go and get a massage or do whatever you like to take care of yourself. My ideal self-care day involves sitting on the couch eating Fruit Loops and watching YouTube videos! Also, for our most recent campaign shoot for the launch of the new skincare range Wishful, Huda rounded up its staff to be models. See Remi's picture, left. What is it like living as a black woman in Dubai? I used to live in Boston and an area of North Carolina where traditionally there has been a lot of racial discrimination, so I have lived around that for years. But although racism of course exists in Dubai, I feel that class has more of an influence on people's behaviour towards others.

1. Decide where your passion lies 2. Build your skill set by taking relevant classes 3. Take on an internship related to the field 4. Network 5. Keep social media profiles such as LinkedIn up to date

Do you have to tailor your wardrobe to be more conservative? Not me, personally. I like to wear bright colours, bold prints, baggy clothes and even a mini skirt or dress for the right occasion. What’s your perception of the wage gap in the PR industry? Honestly, I haven’t given the wage gap much thought because the PR industry is a very female-led field. There are a lot of women in important positions receiving a good and fair income. Saying that, I feel empowered to work for a company that is run by women who are all about uplifting other women to succeed.

DO BLACK PEOPLE REALLY SUPPORT EACH OTHER?

‘Undervaluing an d being dubious of o ne anoth er has to st op oth erwise we will ne ve r th rive ’

Entrepreneur Zenovia Grant shares her thoughts on the #PullUpOrShutup movement and attitudes towards black-owned businesses As an offshoot to Black Lives Matter, other social media movements have been sparked such as the hashtag #PullUpOrShutUP. This is where large beauty corporations are called upon to publicly share their middle and upper management employment race statistics, highlighting the number of black people employed in the company. It may or may not come as a surprise to learn the black community has been a huge financial profit pool for these companies. Mintel reports that Black women spent a sizeable $1.7bn on beauty products in the US in 2017 – that’s 8.5 per cent of the market. And yet, where it is OK to take our money, a lot of these

top beauty brands fail to employ people of colour.

otherwise we will never thrive or be a real contender in the world of business.

While I’m in support of the campaign and companies showing transparency, I believe the debate goes on. Rather than point the finger, perhaps we should start by looking within. As a black woman who had her own business, I’ve seen first-hand how the black community is more likely to spend money with other businesses than reinvest in their own.

I’m not denying that there aren’t poorly structured businesses out there charging ‘top dollar’ for mediocre services. But should that be put down to race? With companies like H&M sparking outrage for placing a little black boy in a monkey top hoodie, I know black people who continue to spend their money in such establishments. So why not apply the same line of thinking or generous attitude to black-owned businesses?

Running an agency for children with disabilities, I went above and beyond to charge low prices, run extra workshops and provide a first class service. Rather than allowing the work to speak for itself, I was always in a position of having to explain my pricing. On one occasion, I was even asked for a freebie. This infectious mentality of undervaluing and being dubious of one another has to stop SPELL

Finally, with many of our non-black counterparts educating themselves on black history and culture through the vestiges of Non-Optical Allyship – a simple guide on being a supporter of BLM without offending others – perhaps now is the perfect time for us all to reflect.

Black-owned businesses are not a new concept. For years they’ve been chipping away in the background waiting for recognition while other brands hogged the limelight. But with the recent shift in mainstream consciousness thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, black British brands are having a big moment. At Spell, we believe supporting homegrown brands shouldn’t be a fleeting trend and we will continue to offer our platform to established and emerging entrepreneurs to showcase their brilliance. With this in mind, we’ve complied a list of brands that pay particular attention to packaging aesthetics, quality ingredients and a luxury feel that can be hard to find on the high street. Put these on your hair and skincare radar now...

SOAPSMITH

Soapsmith founder Samantha Jameson has made no secret of obsessively refining her craft to produce a body range bursting with organic ingredients and natural fragrances. The result is a luxe collection of bath soaks, body lotions and handmade soaps that are fit for any bathroom display. Plus, in homage to her London roots, Jameson has named each scent after a vibrant city area such as Hackney and Camden.

FREYA +BAILEY

After experiencing stress acne, Freya + Bailey founder Abbie Oguntade partnered with her beauty team to create a genuine solution for stressed-out skin. Its prettily packaged skincare line-up ditches the stringent smells and clinical aesthetic often associated with acne-related products and targets prominent concerns affecting black skin like dullness, dehydration and hyperpigmentation.

79 LUX

Add a premium touch to your skincare routine with award-winning beauty range 79 Lux. Founded by nutritionist Karen CummingsPalmer who just so happens to visit the same salon as Spell Editor Jemima Cousins – Hector’s Global Hair with Zeal - it's the perfect antidote for dry complexions. The line uses a cherry-picked menu of organic, plant-based ingredients as well as gold to get the melanin poppin’. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

TALOU

It's often easy to find black-owned hair and skin related brands, but what about aromatherapy? Filling the gap is Talou, a beautifully crafted holistic line that is centred on modern living. The range includes a standout selection of handmade candles, mood-lifting pulse point oils and cleansing smudge sticks. ROXANNE CAMPBELL

After qualifying as a nail technician in 2006, Roxanne Campbell burst onto the beauty scene working at various Fashion Weeks. It wasn’t too long before the nail supremo decided to launch her 100 per cent crueltyfree Nail Lacquer. Available in an assortment of colours complementing the undertones of black skin, you can tap into Roxanne’s expertise by signing up to her monthly online masterclass, which commences next month.

T.W.O.K LONDON

London-based cosmetics company T.W.O.K – The Woman of Kolor is finally getting the props it deserves. Founded in 2016 by pharmacist Toyin Fajemirokun Onyolu, the quest was to create a brand that was not only inclusive but looked the part too. Its zingy packaging rivals new school brands like Glossier and Tarte Cosmetics. And with the expansion into lashes and skincare, this is a brand to watch.

JIM + HENRY

Celebrating curly hair in all its crowning glory, Jim + Henry is the UK’s first leave-in conditioner made up of just eight ingredients. The attention to detail and high-spec ingredients means you can cut down on homemade concoctions and work with what’s in the tub. But don't just take our word for it: head over to the brand's website for curlinspiring picture testimonials and easy-tofollow how-tos.

DIZZIAK

Led by its mission statement ‘All hair is different – Dizziak is different’, what jumps out first about this ground-breaking haircare range is its edgy, standout packaging. It sets the bar high by making a much welcomed departure from the old-fashioned appearance of most afro products. Gaining shelf space in Selfridges and a TFL billboard campaign, we can’t wait to see what else this buzzy brand has in store.
